Abstract:
The energy cascade process in turbulent flows is studied. Kolmogorov inertial range theories are critically reviewed and the multifractal characterization is discussed. Multiplicative cascade models are compared to the energy dissipation field (EDF) measured in the atmosphere. Landau's objection to the 1941 Kolmogorov theory is extended to the predictions of statistical fluid mechanics. The hypothesis $ rm Delta v( lambda L) { buildrel{d} over=} lambda sp{1/3} Delta v(L)$ is rejected with a statistical test. The moments $ rm langle( log varepsilon(L)) sp{p} rangle,$ where $ varepsilon$(L) denotes the EDF averaged over a volume of size L, are shown to be gaussian. For the EDF: Convergence tests showed that the exponents $ tau$(q) were not reliable for q $<$ 0; the correlations obey $ rm langle( mu sb{x}( delta)) sp{p}( mu sb{x+ delta}( delta)) sp{q} rangle propto delta sp{ gamma(p,q)}$ but $ gamma$ does not always equal the value obtained with a multinomial measure; a privileged scale ration r $ approx$ 1/2 is suggested by the prefactor oscillations of the correlation function. The implications of these results for the modelling of the EDF are discussed.

Leung, Kin Hang Paul. "Tourism development in less developed countries." Thesis, Bournemouth University, 2004. http://eprints.bournemouth.ac.uk/285/.

Full text
Abstract:
The United Nations Research Institute of Social Development (UNIRSD) published a monograph after their workshop in Geneva 1994 on the development of Cambodia. Among the various issues the workshop revealed the pressing need for research regarding the post-conflict economic strategy, the socio-psychological effects of the war, appropriate forms of foreign aid and delivery mechanisms, and the roles and responsibilities of different types of local, national and international institutions involved in processes of rehabilitation and reconstruction. In response to this fundamental quest for knowledge, this study is designed to investigate the development of tourism in the war-tom Cambodian economy in the mist of poverty and social problems. International intervention and assistance, the role of government and the Third Sector!, and community participation are key embedded units for the study. The thesis also intended to examine the appropriateness of the approaches employed by the government and international aid in promoting tourism. Although this thesis focused on Cambodia, findings and discussions are highly relevant to other less developed countries (LDCs), especially those having a background of war and/or civil turmoil. The thesis also addresses questions related to tourism as a development agent for economic growth, social rehabilitation and political development. For example: • How can tourism serve to reactivate processes of economic growth and social development without seriously affecting the allocation of resources and current structure of the economy? • How can tourism development be activated given the contextual limitations? • Why should government intervene in the development process and how does one ensure the results will be accomplished with minimal disturbance to the social system? • What kind of new social problem(s) and/or distortions in the economy, if any, have been induced by tourism and/or the liberalization of the economy? The delimitation of the study to tourism is for practical reasons. On the one hand, it is impossible to investigate the situation in Cambodia and make meaningful recommendations without refining the scope of study. Tourism, on the other hand, is the world's largest single industry and one on which many countries have pinned their hopes. It is renowned for its ability to generate income, to attract foreign investment, to create employment and as some including the World Tourism Organization and the Pope John Paul II even argue for its capability to promote peace2. This thesis developed a tourism system model by theoretical induction making use of Cambodia as the subject of study. The ultimate vision of the study is to enhance the body of knowledge and thus to capitalize tourism as a development agent for the rehabilitation of a war-tom economy and social institutions to fight both poverty and marginalization. The findings of the study revealed the most current situation in Cambodia by applying the model of the tourism system and the model for tourism development proposed. The proposition that free-market capitalism might not work for less developed countries was tested and proved to be valid. This thesis revealed the barriers and potential of tourism as a development agent for LDC by using Cambodia as the subject for investigation. Specific recommendations were given. Although it might seem controversial given the difficulties as illustrated in the analysis, Cambodia has very limited option for development. The thesis also argued that many obstacles in the development are administrative. Once the problems were addressed, a significant increase in demand can be expected. This study attempts to provide answers to developmental questions. However, more questions and gaps in knowledge emerged in the process of the study. This study, as originally designed, is not an end in itself but a stepping-stone to further studies. To conclude, allow me to cite the words of Joan Healy, Overseas Service Bureau Australia, "to understand the meaning of this time we do well to see it through the experiences and aspirations of ordinary Cambodians. Then our questions change. We ask about ways they see to ease suffering and contribute to peace. We face the fact that we do not know so many answers.

Jennings, Anthony. "Economic problems of least developed countries." Thesis, University of Leicester, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/35499.

Full text
Abstract:
The United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries (UNCLDC) held in Paris in 1981, consolidated the category of least developed countries as a major issue at the international level. The creation of the category, and the theory and practice of least development are examined, and the results of the UNCLDC are assessed. Malawi is taken as a case study, to examine its response to the Substantial New Programme of Action, agreed to at the UNCLDC, and to analyse the extent to which the international community has fulfilled its commitment to substantially improve the volume and quality of assistance. The effects and causes of the recurrent cost problem in least developed countries arc analysed, at the micro and macro levels, and proposals made to ease this constraint. Attention is given to the scope of food aid to support recurrent costs, and a set of guidelines are proposed. At the UNCLDC it was suggested that very large projects (transformational investments) should be undertaken in least developed countries. The methodology for estimating the benefits of such projects is discussed, and a case study presented of the use of project appraisal and the multiplier in Malawi. A significant increase in aid was agreed as a key international support measure at the UNCLDC. As yet there is no systematic aid evaluation process. The results of an experiment arc presented, using a qualitatively based system of evaluation, which is then assessed across sets of data with quantitative summations, to measure aid effectiveness.

Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD<br>Organic noncyclic compounds were used in the development of immunosensor for rapid fish species detection. Flourene derivatives show unique chemical and physical properties because they contain a rigid planar biphenyl unit, and the facile substitution at C9 position of the flourene can improve the solubility and processability of materials containing flourene without significantly increasing of steric interactions in the compounds backbone. 9-(4- methoxyphenyl)-9H-xanthen-9-ol is bulky, rigid and has an hydroxyl moiety that may act as a hydrogen – bond donor, as well as a pyranyl oxygen which is a potential hydrogen –bond acceptor. We have successfully synthesised 9,9’-(ethyne1,2-diyl)bis(flouren-9-ol) by reflux method and 9-(4-methoxyphenyl)-9H-xanthen-9-ol through stirring at room temperature. The products were characterised using spectroscopic methods and were found to be both UV/Vis active (λmax = 400 nm flourene derivative and λmax = 337 nm xanthene derivative ) and fluorescent (440nm and 467nm flourene derivative and 344 and 380 xanthene derivative). These compounds were drop coated onto commercial glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to produce thin films. Scan rate dependent cyclic voltammetry (CV) confirmed the electrodynamics of the thin films to be consistent with monolayer diffusion (De = 1.37x10-21 cm2/s flourene derivative and De = 9.79x10-21 cm2/s xanthene derivative). Surface concentration was estimated to be 1.55x10-13 mol cm-2 flourene derivative and 2.00x10-13 mol cm-2. These compounds were used for the inclusion of parvalbumin antibodies immobilised onto clathrate platform by incubation and were evaluated as immunosensors for fish species identification. The antibody/antigen binding event was evaluated using UV/Vis spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The immunosensor response to parvalbumin in real samples of snoek (an indigenous fish species), tuna, fish paste, eyeshadow, lipstick, omega 3&6 and Scott's emulsion was evaluated. The sensitivity as calculated from EIS for each immunosensor was found to be 5.36x104 flourene derivative immunosensor and 4,11x104 xanthene derivative immunosensor and the detection limit of 1.50 pg/ml flourene derivative immunosensor and 2.42 pg/ml xanthene derivative immunosensor. The antibody/antigen binding was monitored as decrease in charge transfer resistance and increase in capacitance by EIS. The interfacial kinetics of the immunosensors were modelled as equivalent electrical circuit based on EIS data. The UV/Vis spectroscopy was used to confirm the binding of the antibody/antigen in solution by monitoring the intensity of the absorption peak.

Liu, Li. "Hierarchical structures in fully developed turbulence." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/289027.

Full text
Abstract:
Analysis of the probability density functions (PDFs) of the velocity increment dv&ell; and of their deformation is used to reveal the statistical structure of the intermittent energy cascade dynamics of turbulence. By analyzing a series of turbulent data sets including that of an experiment of fully developed low temperature helium turbulent gas flow (Belin, Tabeling, & Willaime, Physica D 93, 52, 1996), of a three-dimensional isotropic Navier-Stokes simulation with a resolution of 2563 (Cao, Chen, & She, Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 3711, 1996) and of a GOY shell model simulation (Leveque & She, Phys. Rev. E 55, 1997) of a very big sample size (up to 5 billions), the validity of the Hierarchical Structure model (She & Leveque, Phys. Rev. Lett. 72, 366, 1994) for the inertial-range is firmly demonstrated. Furthermore, it is shown that parameters in the Hierarchical Structure model can be reliably measured and used to characterize the cascade process. The physical interpretations of the parameters then allow to describe differential changes in different turbulent systems so as to address non-universal features of turbulent systems. It is proposed that the above study provides a framework for the study of non-homogeneous turbulence. A convergence study of moments and scaling exponents is also carried out with detailed analysis of effects of finite statistical sample size. A quantity Pmin is introduced to characterize the resolution of a PDF, and hence the sample size. The fact that any reported scaling exponent depends on the PDF resolution suggests that the validation (or rejection) of a model of turbulence needs to carry out a resolution dependence analysis on its scaling prediction.

Abstract:
The fast growing revolution of digital printers has made customized printed textiles easy to come by asanyone can order them online. As a result the use of prints in fashion is more common than ever andthe difficulty to distinguish individuality rises. This degree work has therefore glanced through history to search for new possibilities in the oldtechniques. The discovery is the unexplored potential of light sensitive dyes. A technique borrowedfrom analogue photography and that dates back to the 19th century, yet there is very little trace of itbeing used in the field of fashion. The directness of this technique opens for possibilities to createprints directly onto voluminous and irregular forms without the dye interfering with the materialsqualities. Hence this work is investigating the relation between print and form and by printing directlyonto garments it aims to challenage the hierarchical structure between the two.Can printing directly onto garments create a closer relation between print and form design? Are therepotential expressions in analogue techniques that can’t be achieved digitally? And does it make senseto be analogue in a digital world if it equals individuality? That is what this degree work aims to answeras it takes advantage of the technique’s unique qualities and presents new aesthetic expressions infashion design.

Baker, Robert. "A Comparison of Illusory Halo Levels Between Conventionally-Developed and Factor Analytically-Developed Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scales." TopSCHOLAR®, 1985. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1886.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to compare halo levels between a set of behaviorally anchored rating scales (BARS) developed by conventional methodology with a set of BARS developed by factor analytic means. The conventionally-developed BARS were developed at the University of California-Berkeley by Department of Psychology faculty members in conjunction with undergraduate psychology students. The factor analytically-derived BARS were developed during the course of the research reported here. In Phase 1 of the present study, undergraduate psychology students rated their instructors on a 1-7 Likert scale using the individual anchors which comprised the conventional BARS. A factor analysis of these ratings was used to form a modified set of BARS. In Phase 2, a new group of undergraduate psychology students was asked to rate their instructors using either the conventional (Harari-Zedeck) BARS or the newly developed modified BARS in order to test for differences in the halo levels for each form of BARS. Halo was measured by the strength of the dimension intercorrelations in each set of scales. It was hypothesized that the factor analytic approach would yield a set of scales with reduced levels of illusory halo. Results indicated, however, that the conventionally-developed and factor analytically-developed BARS were not significantly different in their halo levels. A post hoc reliability check revealed that the conventionally-developed BARS had significantly less interrater reliability than the factor analytically-derived BARS, which may partially account for the lack of difference in the scales’ halo levels.

Orie, Kenneth Kanu. "Managing the less developed countries' debt problem." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/27354.

Full text
Abstract:
The underlying problem in debt management has been the allocation of the global adjustment burden between the creditors and the debtors and to make them less sensitive to the colossal economic sacrifice attendant to the adjustment. The Brady Plan seems to strike a balance between the opposing interests of the parties involved. But the question of whether such a balance can be sustained in the long run is still open. All the debt management strategies evaluated in this work seem inadequate in so far as they could not abate the recurrence of the problem. But they nevertheless, appear to be the best that can be offered in the face of the reality of the world economic situation. The susceptibility of the Less Developed Countries (LDCs) to foreign indebtedness is rooted in the poor structure and relatively undiversified nature of their economies. Thus the economic growth of these countries seems a panacea to the debt problem. To this end, the LDCs have to ensure that their economies undergo vigorous economic reforms congruent with the present and prospective realities of the world economy, aimed at lifting supply constraints, attracting foreign investments and encouraging debt-equity swaps which seems to be making a considerable inroad to effective debt management in that it saves debtor countries steep foreign exchange commitment needed for international trade and debt servicing. The economic interdependence of nations makes the success of this strategy contingent upon a 3% minimum GDP growth rate in the industrialized countries to generate not only good market for LDCs’ tradeables but also to forestall exogenous factors that promote the recurrence of the problem. Clearly, this matter is not within the province of international law. The problem is basically economic and must be practically handled and resolved in the same context. In the context of the debt problem and management, international law cannot make possible what is economically impossible. Debtors are therefore advised to save themselves the problem of international indebtedness by matching expenditures with available resources at all times while the creditor countries themselves tamper their economic policies to check the exogenous factors which promote the recurrence of the problem.<br>Law, Peter A. Full text
Abstract:
Earlier studies examining house pricing have mainly focused on the secondary market and have often overlooked the primary market and newly produced housing units. This paper studies the pricing strategies in the primary housing market, as that segment differs from the secondary market. By using data from one newly produced housing project, we are able to exclude a number of project-specific factors, as they are nearly identical for all observations. This allows us to focus on factors that are directly observable and require very little assessment or evaluation in our estimations of list prices, selling prices and selling times. The empirical results exhibit a close relationship between list- and selling prices, but a few factors differ significantly between the two. Such differences could indicate a misinterpretation of the market by the seller. The time-on-market model shows that a number of factors affect selling times as well. The results indicate a relationship between "mispriced" factors and their impact on the selling times, where "over-priced" factors seem to prolong the time-on-market and "under-priced" factors seem to shorten the time-on-market. By dividing the units into different price ranges, it becomes clear that high-priced housing is more difficult to price and take longer to sell. This relationship is strengthened by a degree-of-overpricing variable, which exhibits a positive sign in the time-on-market model. The effect is the strongest in low-priced units and not significant for higher-priced units. Other factors that affect pricing strategies require a broader discussion. Analogies from similar consumer good markets indicate that pricing strategies are dependent on the types of customers in the target groups as well as the stage in the project life-cycle.

Tobin, Paul. "Explaining climate policy variation in developed states." Thesis, University of York, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/7953/.

Full text
Abstract:
The climate policies of developed states vary from small greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets to the formulation of highly ambitious, legally-binding objectives. As such, the research question of this thesis is ‘What explains variation amongst developed states’ climate policies?’ This thesis seeks to explain variation in climate policy ambition in the twenty-three developed states of the UNFCCC Annex II between 2006 and 2010. This investigation employs a nested design approach. It commences with a critical evaluation of the existing literature on environmental and climate policy to identify potential independent variables. Fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis then tests four hypotheses, in order to find the patterns that influence climate policy in the twenty-three states and select case studies. Austria, Finland, Germany and Sweden are selected as case studies, as their climate policies are not explained by the medium-n analysis. The four states also share very similar scores for each of the conditions being tested, but differ regarding the outcome. From here, semi-structured elite interviews with forty policy-makers and analyses of primary sources are employed as part of a small-n analysis on the four case studies. The concept of ‘path dependence’ is employed to facilitate an understanding of the long-term processes involved in climate policy development. Three main arguments are made in this thesis. Firstly, the combination of left-wing government and membership of the European Union is sufficient to result in ambitious climate policy, while non-membership of the European Union is sufficient to result in ‘not ambitious’ climate policy. Secondly, states which developed renewable electricity policies according to the principles of Ecological Modernisation formulated pioneering climate policy. Thirdly, states that produced nuclear power, but also sought to phase out the energy source, formulated more ambitious climate policy than states that did not produce any nuclear power, or sought to expand the energy source. This thesis furthers the understanding of climate policy variation, adds to the burgeoning field of set theoretic methods, and provides more nuanced explanations of how Ecological Modernisation and nuclear energy can influence climate change policy.

Full text
Abstract:
Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is a polymer commonly used in various applications, particularly in hip joint replacements. Despite its good performance, it is susceptible to oxidation degradation, which can be mitigated with the addition of vitamin E, and to excessive wear against metal countersurfaces, which can potentially be improved with the addition of nanoparticles. In this work, sixteen newly developed UHMWPE nanocomposites with different nanofillers (multi-walled carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide and nanodiamonds), blended with and without vitamin E, and both irradiation crosslinked and non-crosslinked were studied. Thermomechanical characterisation (dynamic mechanical analysis and thermogravimetric analysis) and tribological pin-on-disc testing showed that both nanofillers and the addition of vitamin E ensured improved the performance of the nanocomposites compared to the virgin UHMWPE. Vitamin E improved the oxidative and thermal stability of UHMWPE, decreased the wear and increased the coefficient of friction. The nanoparticle reinforcements contributed to improved thermal stability to some degree and decreased the wear. Crosslinking was also shown to result in improved thermomechanical performance, although it appears that the addition of vitamin E inhibits the crosslinking process.

Abstract:
In the first part of this thesis, a general one dimensional theory of strategically determined phenotypes is developed and applied to biological signalling games. Abstract modular modelling techniques are utilised to solve hitherto analytically intractable problems including error-prone signalling, and how to incorporate genetic features into optimization models. Links are drawn between previous biological models, such as the War of Attrition and Strategic Handicap mod- els. Mistakes in previous biological models are recognised and, where possible, rectified. A number of novel insights into biological phenomena arising from the models are presented, including analyses of: when free signals are possible; honest signalling of future paternal investment; dimorphic signals; the effects of the mechanisms of female discrimination in sexual selection on male signalling strategies; and the effects of relatedness on the magnitude and stability of equi- librium signalling strategies. It is argued that Zahavi's proposed demarcation between signal selection and natural selection is unjustifiable from a theoretical perspective. The second part of the thesis concerns the epistatic handicap process of sex- ual selection. Unlike the conditional and revealing handicap mechanisms, the epistatic or 'Zahavian' handicap mechanism of sexual selection has hitherto found scant support in the theoretical literature, as it appeared to function only under the most extreme conditions. A continuous game theory model, a quantitative genetics model, and a three locus major gene model are presented which show that the epistatic handicap mechanism can function, independent of the Fisher process of sexual selection, under reasonable assumptions. More- over, the game theory model illuminates the connection between the strategic and epistatic handicap mechanisms. The quantitative genetics and major gene models, together with a fourth model, are also used to show that a general argu- ment concerning indirect genetic correlations, which has appeared in a number of papers on sexual selection, is specious. Finally, a general theorem on games that satisfy the single-crossing condition (also known as the sorting, Spence-Mirrless, or constant sign condition) which underlies many of the results presented in the first part of the thesis is proven in appendix C. Applying a limit result to this general theorem provides a new proof of, and extensions to, Nash's existence result for equilibria to strategic- form games without having to resort to Kakutani's fixed point theorem.

Ring, Jonas, and Maria Berglund. "Effect of Developed Story on Mobile Gamers' Motivation." Thesis, Umeå universitet, Institutionen för psykologi, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-149354.

Abstract:
Only a decade ago, research was limited regarding enjoyment and player motivation in digital games. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a developed story in a mobilepuzzle game. The main research question was if a developed story can affect the motivation to play a mobile puzzle game, and the secondary question was if a developed story can affect players’ overall impression of a mobile puzzle game. The sample size was eight participants (five men, two women, one non-disclosed), who enjoys playing mobile games, and were between 20-28 years old. A semi-controlled field study was performed with a between-group design consisting of experimental group and control group. Participants played freely a mobile puzzle game with a pre-existing or a developed story for a week, then returned for an evaluation interview. Their total playtime was measured with on-screen time trackers and their motivation and overall impression with subjective ratings on a five-level scale, as well as their reasonings to the ratings. The results showed no main difference between the two conditions. However, exploratory analysis found that participants who were interested in a story had lower motivation to continue playing compared to those not interested in a story, possibly due to their player type. This study makes way for future research regarding story and video games, mobile games in particular. In the long run this research could contribute to make mobile games more immersive and enjoying to play for the public.<br>För bara ett årtionde sen var forskning begränsad kring nöje och spelares motivation i digitala spel.

Abstract:
As early as forty years ago, developed countries became concerned with the concept of sustainable development and then quite successfully turned it into applied policy issues. The conceptualization of sustainable development implies integration of three pillars: (i) economic development; (ii) social development; and (iii) environmental protection. Progress across all three provinces in a consolidated manner is considered as a critical step towards the achievement of sustainable development. Yaldiz, Hanedar Elmas. "Essays on Loan Markets in Less-Developed Economies." Doctoral thesis, University of Trento, 2013. http://eprints-phd.biblio.unitn.it/985/1/Thesis_.pdf.

Abstract:
Financial constraints are one of the most important obstacles for businesses particularly in less–developed and developing economies. Collateral requirements are frequently addressed as one the most important obstacles to starting and running a business especially for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), in these countries. This thesis consists of four empirical papers each corresponding to a chapter on loan markets in less-developed economies. After the introduction chapter, the second chapter investigates both the presence of collateral and the collateral to loan ratios on loans extended to SMEs are examined. The informal credit mostly serves credit-constrained borrowers (mostly SMEs, poor households, informal businesses, borrowers in rural areas that are located far from formal creditors, and people who are not able to meet collateral requirements of formal creditors) in the formal financial markets. The third chapter aims to understand why and to what extend SMEs use informal credit from various sources, moneylenders and family/friends and suppliers/customers as forms of informal credit. The fourth chapter examines the financial constraints faced by female entrepreneurs. The primary data source in these second, third and fourth chapters is the Business Environment and Enterprise Performance Surveys which are mainly based on Eastern European and Central Asian countries. These surveys are joint projects of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the World Bank. Chapter five of this thesis takes a different strand and focuses on the effect of banks’ market power on banks’ risk. The empirical analysis is based on data from Turkish banks and helps to shed light on the relation between market power and financial stability. Finally chapter six highlights the main conclusions and addresses potential future research directions.

Gustafson, Kelly C. "Freshwater Resource Supply Modeling for Developed and Undeveloped Watersheds." FIU Digital Commons, 2014. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/1589.

Full text
Abstract:
Globally, the current state of freshwater resource management is insufficient and impeding the chance at a sustainable future. Human interference within the natural hydrologic cycle is becoming dangerously irreversible and the need to redefine resource managerial approaches is imminent. This research involves the development of a coupled natural-human freshwater resource supply model using a System Dynamics approach. The model was applied to two case studies, Somalia, Africa and the Phoenix Active Management Area in Arizona, USA. It is suggested that System Dynamic modeling would be an invaluable tool for achieving sustainable freshwater resource management in individual watersheds. Through a series of thought experiments, a thorough understanding of the systems’ dynamic behaviors is obtainable for freshwater resource managers and policy-makers to examine various courses of action for alleviating freshwater supply concerns. This thesis reviews the model, its development and an analysis of several thought experiments applied to the case studies.
