Nagle, Liam. "Development of a Computer Based Energy Management System." Thesis, Cranfield University, 1998. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/4662.

Full text
Abstract:
A prototype computer based expert system has been developed to aid energy managers by speeding the energy auditing process and rapidly identifying potential low cost and fast pay-back energy saving investments for a wide range of businesses. It consists of a generally applicable energy management system based on sound, tried theory and practical experience gained from a number of energy management surveys. These surveys were used to identify key data requirements for the identification of common areas of wastage. The system uses sparse data analysis and the building energy signature model. It produces an entire energy audit and list of economic recommendations for a site based upon minimal input data. This is accomplished by reference to a number of internal databases containing the technical information required, as well as the entire set of algorithms and mathematical routines required for the analyses. The prototype was tested with a synthetic data set derived from the site surveys and with real data from a large tertiary college and it was found to give credible results in line with those produced by extensive and in-depth manual data-gathering and analysis.

Abstract:
A model of the sequence of decisions required for mine development and production has been formulated and is operated as a computer-based game. The Mine Manager is an operations research game in which the user assumes the role of mine management in the exploitation of a mineral deposit. Potential applications of the game lie in experimentation, policy formulation and education in mine economics. The Mine Manager is described using the terminology of games.
The selection of parameters and of the level of detail in the model reflects a compromise between realism and simplicity. At the development stage, the selection of project specifications concerns the mining method and capacity installation. Decisions on cut-off grade and/or cut-off value, capacity utilization, the sequence of mining, stockpiling and expansion are made during the mine life. Decision making takes place within a framework provided by an abstraction of the operating environment of a mine, and must comply with a set of rules. These rules ensure that only feasible decisions are made. Within this constraint, the model offers a high degree of flexibility in setting the values of the decision variables.
The Mine Manager combines elements of geology, mining, management and gaming. Conditional simulation is used to generate grades of copper, zinc and gold in a massive sulphide deposit. Mining operations in both underground and open-pit mines are modelled, and hypothetical capital and operating cost functions are developed for the mine and mill. A pricing model generates new price series for each run of the game.
The Mine Manager is operated interactively on a microcomputer through the use of modular software. The user interface and a sample run of the game are described, and the information displays created by the game are presented.

Abstract:

Tanzania has exceptional wildlife, environment and natural resources. The traditional way of conserving nature and wildlife has been through parks and reserves. In the 1980’s community based conservation emerged as a resource management paradigm. Its premise was that giving local people a stake in wildlife would increase their incentive to conserve it. This would make wildlife an important engine of local economic development. The core elements in community based conservation projects concern development, conservation and sustainable land use. Its ambition both to improve conditions for the local communities and conserve wildlife seems like a win-win situation, but has this really been working that well when applied in the field? This study aims to review the Community Based Wildlife Management in Tanzania, exemplified by a case study in the Wildlife Management Area in Burunge, located in a migration corridor between two national parks. There has been much controversy surrounding community-based management projects. While gains for the local communities have not always been clear, gains for wildlife seem more evident. Both species numbers and individuals have increased, but at the same time there has also been increasing conflicts between locals and wildlife. This is a sign that the WMAs are only halfway to towards reaching their goal of improving conditions for both communities and wildlife. CBC stills seems like the way forwards, maybe in a modified form which allows more government control, but where local people’s rights are still respected.

Brijkumar, Amritha. "School management teams' management of the school-based continuous professional development of teachers." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/40393.

Full text
Abstract:
This study focuses on how school management teams manage the school-based continuous professional development of the teachers at their schools. The assumption is that continuous professional development - if school-based - may be more practical in implementing changes because the teachers will be working in a familiar context when managing their own development and in meeting the specific needs of their school. At present the professional development of teachers consists mainly of external workshops and courses. Teachers then return to the school context that has not changed to accommodate what has been learnt at these workshops or courses. The lack of feedback or follow-up has done little to encourage teachers to implement any changes in their teaching practice. The study also explores the practice of school management teams in creating collaborative school cultures for the implementation of schoolbased continuous professional development. The rationale for this study is based on the urgent need for continuous professional development to be part of the schools’ development of teachers. The National Policy Framework for Teacher Education and Development provides the frame of reference. There is, however, a gap in the policy on how continuous professional development should be implemented to create a collaborative school culture and the role that the school management team plays in doing this. The aim of the study was to determine how school management teams managed continuous professional development at their schools; to identify the challenges they faced in managing school-based continuous professional development; and to explore the strategies that contributed to successful school-based continuous professional development. The research methodology employed in this study is a Triangulation Mixed Methods Design. Qualitative and quantitative data was collected simultaneously and analysed separately to understand the research problem. The sample consisted of principals, deputy principals and heads of department of primary schools who were interviewed. Questionnaires were administered to Level 1 teachers at these schools. The interviews were analysed by identifying emerging patterns, themes and categories. The questionnaires were analysed by presenting descriptive statistics about the schools and then inferential statistics were determined that correlated and tested the hypotheses. The results were reported in the form of summaries from the interviews and graphs from the questionnaires.

MacInnis, Daniel V. 1964. "Development of a system dynamics based management flight simulator for new product development." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/34732.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, System Design & Management Program, 2004.

All firms in any mature product development industry are being pressured into performing 'better, faster, and cheaper' by both customers and competitors. In short, firms are being tasked with doing more, with less, faster. This leads to product development organizations being unrealistically tasked to deliver on these programs that often lead to projects falling behind schedule, over budget, and with inadequate quality. While striving to do the right actions to survive, the management of these firms may be leading their firms to disaster through over commitment, and short-term management actions to address the quality, budget, and schedule shortfalls. An understanding of the system dynamics associated with the program management of new product development (NPD) programs is essential to reversing this trend. Several corporations are instituting system dynamics in their management and executive training curricula to affect correct policies, procedures, and behaviors that lead to success. However, because the correct policies, procedures, and behaviors as revealed by system dynamics analysis are counter-intuitive and opposite those policies currently employed in program management, a method is needed to drive the learning of system dynamics so that it becomes ingrained in the program management thought processes. A management flight simulator (MFS) of the program management of a new product development project based on system dynamics provides the hands on experience that managers can learn the consequences of non systems-thinking policies on project performance and how system dynamics based policies can lead to greater success. This thesis provides an overview of the system dynamics of project management in new product development and insight into the
(cont.) correct policies, procedures, and behaviors that lead to success. Research on the role of MFSs in driving the learning of system dynamics principles is explored. A single-phase system dynamics model for a new product development program and a MFS is developed to teach the fundamental lessons of system dynamics applied to product development project management and is to be incorporated in the BP Project Academy. Insight from my own experiences in product development is incorporated in this MFS as well as in recommendations for further development.

Bullock, Robert. "The Development of Job-Based Psychological Ownership." Thesis, Seattle Pacific University, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10002516.

Full text
Abstract:

Psychological ownership has come to light as an important state with strong implications on employee attitudes and behaviors. However, relatively little attention has been paid towards the process by which employees come to develop feelings of psychological ownership towards their work, particularly regarding the role played by individual traits in this process. Ownership theorists claim that personality and disposition should matter (Mayhew, Ashkanasy, Bramble, & Gardner, 2007; Pierce & Jussila, 2011), yet these claims remain largely untested. The purpose of the current investigation is to address these gaps by exploring how employee disposition and job design contribute to the development of job-based psychological ownership. Employing a cross-sectional approach, data were collected using an online survey where participants were asked to complete measures of trait positive affectivity (PA), job characteristics, work experiences, and job-based psychological ownership. Because the study focused on job-related phenomenon, participants were required to work full-time in a location other than their home to be considered for this study. The final 426 participants (60.4% male, 39.6% female) had an average tenure of 5.04 years (SD = 5.03) and represented a wide range of industries and job levels (23.7% entry-level, 31.0% individual contributor, 17.8% supervisory, 10.8% mid-level manager, 2.8% senior manager, 13.8% technical or professional). Hypotheses were tested using bootstrapped regression analyses and structural equation modeling. Results indicated that job autonomy has a positive effect on job-based psychological ownership (B = 0.501, CI 0.415 to 0.594) through three mediated paths: investment of ideas, effort, and self into one’s work (B = 0.252, CI 0.178 to 0.349), experienced control and influence over one’s work (B = 0.214, CI 0.137 to 0.293), and intimate knowledge and understanding of one’s job (B = 0.036, CI 0.003 to 0.082). Employee PA significantly moderated the mediated path from autonomy to ownership through experienced control (Index of ModMed = 0.017, CI 0.000 to 0.045), such that control mattered more for high-PA employees. Exploratory analyses suggest that PA may play a dual role – as a moderator of autonomy’s effects on control (B = 0.052, CI 0.009 to 0.100), and as an indirect effect on ownership itself. For example, high-PA employees reported greater investment of self in their work, which in turn predicted job-based psychological ownership (B = 0.255, CI 0.177 to 0.361). Ultimately, job autonomy stood out as having a particularly strong and consistent positive effect on job-based psychological ownership. Results suggest that all employees, from the most enthusiastic to the most apathetic can experience this positive psychological state. That is, as long as they are afforded a high level of autonomy in deciding how to plan and carry out their work.

Carr, James B. "The effective implementation of technology-based SME management development programmes." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/24165.

Full text
Abstract:
Management learning technology is viewed as one possible solution to overcoming the training barriers faced by managers and other employees in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The aim of this thesis is to investigate whether higher education institutions can provide effective management development opportunities for SMEs using learning technology. Its objectives are: to explore the potential for the transfer of such materials to SMEs; to examine the specific pedagogic approaches that might be most effective in higher education and the SME sector; and to identify factors which can maximise the effective use of management learning technology across a range of contexts. The empirical work described has two main aspects: the first is a case study of learning technology implementation among undergraduate business studies students at the University of Edinburgh; the second is a case study of a technology-based management development programme for SMEs at the University of East London. From these studies barriers to SME learning are identified, both traditional and arising from the introduction of new learning technologies. The traditional barriers identified reflect the SME learning environment in which, for example, time, staff resources and finance are in limited supply. Barriers identified that arise from the introduction of new learning technologies include problems with speed of networks, inappropriate content and socialising distance learning. It emerges that there is potential for transfer of new learning technologies from higher education to SMEs. However this is a difficult undertaking, particularly where there is a lack of general SME training skills. The pedagogic approaches required in the higher education and SME sectors exhibit similarities and differences. The main similarity is that learning technology must be fully integrated into the context of learning delivery if its effectiveness is to be maximised. The main difference is that among SMEs there is often a need for one-to-one guidance, at least initially, owing to their diversity in terms of business type and learners’ educational backgrounds. In both sectors implementation will be most effective when attention is paid to the context of learning development (designing the teaching materials and activities) and the context of learning delivery (the delivery system and its associated support mechanisms).

Abstract:
The paper evaluates nature-based solutions for a retrofitting proposal for the combined regeneration, climate adaptation, and green space management of the industrial area Gåsebäck in Helsingborg, Sweden. The objective of this study was to evaluate options for how Gåsebäck could be sustainably regenerated and developed, while providing additional security against future negative effects of climate change, through the implementation of nature-based solutions. The methods used were unstructured interviews, literature study, thematic data analysis, and scoping review. Some urban societal challenges the area is facing were identified as Urban regeneration, Climate adaptation, and Green space management. The suggested NBSs to address these challenges are phytoremediation, mycoremediation, street trees and bushes, green walls, green roofs, flower beds, permeable surfaces, roadside greenery, rain gardens, de-culvertation and pocket parks. Examples of how the identified nature-based solutions can be retrofitted to block Italien are installing green walls on the old fire station for noise and pollution abatement, biodiversity increase, climate regulation, and enhancement of green elements; green roofs on various buildings for e.g. water management, increased biodiversity and green elements; street trees and bushes along the streets Södergatan and Malmöleden/Gåsebäcksvägen for noise and pollution abatement, water management, biodiversity increase, and enhancement of green elements; site specific installation or pocket park with phyto- or mycoremediation; flower beds and roadside traffic to increase attractiveness; and rain gardens and permeable surfaces for water management.

Abstract:
This research is conducted to formulate a framework for project risk management by evaluating the current understanding and practices. It examines the risk management processes provided by the various standards, frameworks and guidelines available globally. The research argues that the existence of varying risk management standards, frameworks and guidelines is not an assurance that organisations will adopt their principles and processes. Furthermore, these documents do not provide sufficient information concerning the understanding of the concept of risk and uncertainty and their management. To accomplish this goal, it became necessary for the research to reach an understanding about the concepts and fundamental issues of risk and uncertainty management. This research also sought to know how organisations in different industries manage risks and uncertainties for their projects. This research was confined to the study of the understanding and practices of PRM by established or influential organisations in aerospace and aviation, oil, gas and petrochemical, power, telecommunication as well as construction industries with matching criteria. Semi-structured interviews were conducted using an ‘aide-memoire’ with managers involved in the management of project risks to document the current practices of risk management. Thematic analyses were used to compress and summarise the large amount of data into internally consistent understandings of risk and uncertainty. Based on the results, the research proposes a structure that explains the current understanding of the concepts of risk and uncertainty as well as an outline process framework for conducting risk management for industry use. Practically, risk and uncertainty are found to be interrelated whereby and they happen as an outcome of each other’s occurrence. The proposed framework consists of six major steps which incorporated the purposes and activities within, providing a better understanding of how risk can be managed. This research contributes theoretically, methodologically and practically to project risk management body of knowledge.

Abstract:
The researcher was appointed into the position of General Manager within the Clothing and General Merchandise Supply Chain in a large retail organisation as part of a transformation strategy to turn around a business unit which had historically been delivering substandard performance and had led to significant impacts on organisational performance. Despite the organisation having a number of mechanisms in place to assist line managers to manage the life cycle of an employee during their employment, the performance measures as well as selection of a talent pipeline were measured against the framework of an underperforming environment. Competence was therefore benchmarked on overrated performance against underrated goals which led to ineffective performance and no validity in talent identification. Critical Realism was chosen as an ontological philosophy. Data was generated through four research cycles and processed through grounded theory meta-synthesis methodology. Four core variables emerged from the research: Identification of inherent DNA required for talent succession development, Quality of leadership, Effectiveness of a performance plan and Leading with heart. The driving variable within the balancing loop identified in the causal mechanism was Quality of leadership which is the initial point of influence in the system, and sets off a chain of cause and effect interactions between all the other variables, resulting in either a positive or negative stabilization within this system. This research suggests interventions and mechanisms to improve performance while simultaneously developing a future fit workforce who have the ability to focus on a number of moving parts at the same time. Efficiency is created through their competence in ensuring outstanding operational performance, the engagement and effective management of staff as well as the ability to handle constant change, complexity and uncertainty. The theory built, as well as the proposed interventions and mechanisms were tested and modified within the environment and delivered significant business results. The results achieved as a result of the implementation of the theory, are therefore concrete evidence of relevance, validity and utility. Contributions to practice, theory and research are discussed in this closing chapter of this dissertation.

“To develop a process-based management system at a textile company” is the title of this thesis. The thesis is a compulsory part of the master programme: Quality and environmental management at Högskolan i Borås, the master programme is worth 60 ECTS credits. It has been carried out as an interdisciplinary project between students of the School of Engineering as well as the Textile School in Borås.Almedahls is a textile company located in Kinna, Sweden. They are in a need of process-based management system for their four different strategic business areas and three companies. The purpose of the thesis is not only to develop a process-based management system for Almedahl-Kinna, which is one of the three companies, but also to create the new management system in order for it to work for all three parts of the company in the future. The theory used in this project focuses on the definition of business process mapping as well as its application in use. The theory also includes process-based management systems, business process management and measurements. The theory and interviews with the employees at Almedahl-Kinna can be considered as the foundation of the result of this thesis. Result of the thesis is a shared process-based management system for Almedahl-Kinna developed in a business process map.The result also consists of sub-processes linked to the core process of the BPM. The sub-process is based on the inputs and outputs found in the core process.A common vision between Almedahls and the study group was essential to achieve an acceptable result in the end, hence the project was driven by an initial BPM provided by Almedahls and in fact it became one of the main aims of this project: how to change the management’s point of view towards thinking in processes?Based on the nature of process-based management systems, the idea to choose this system was correctly selected for Almedahls to gather all four strategy business areas and three companies together.

In the Information Technology Era today, software has been one of the most significant elements to help organizations achieve increased productivity and commercial success. For developers to create effective software, an appropriate development process must be applied. Generally, the process of developing software can be considered as having six phases: requirements engineering, design, implementation, testing, maintenance, and project management. Over the past thirty years, different kinds of life cycle models have been developed by applying these phases to provide developers with the most appropriate procedures for projects of various types. In addition, a set of development fundamentals should be considered during the process to optimize time, effort and cost in developing each project. This thesis studies the software development process and its effects on the development schedule of a Pavement Management and Inspection System (PMIS) project as a case study. From the case study, it can be concluded that choosing the appropriate life cycle model and applying the pertinent fundamentals, with the essential components of the development speed, can lead the project to be a success. Problems encountered during the development process are also valuable information to study as it may prevent them from occurring in the future.

Abstract:
There exists an increasing evidence of benefits with involving suppliers in a new product development activity in the mass production companies. Challenges such as, reduction of a product life cycle, technological uncertainties, and increased cost of R&D activity have made it necessary to extend a new product development activity, beyond the firm’s boundary. However, in a project based industries this trend is not predominant and importance of innovation and suppliers, applies to this industry also. Hence, Objective of the thesis is to establish a framework for involving suppliers for a project based industry. The qualitative research makes use of extensive literature within the field, product development, innovation and project based industry and supplier involvement in product development. Several interviews were carried out for collection the empirical data at the case company, which is a project based organization. Required framework, a result of the thesis is achieved through an extensive empirical analysis. The results show that a value of innovation is different between the project based industries and the mass production industries and it is perceived differently. However, innovation is equally important for a project based industry and it has a potential to include innovation within its processes. On this regard, several challenges and innovation promoting elements have been identified. Project management techniques and disruption in the knowledge transfer are some of the impediments for innovation within project based industries. The thesis provides the suggested framework to overcome these challenges and increase innovation in a project based industry and involves suppliers in its innovative and development activities.

A platform based approach for product development allows companies to eliminate redundancies, efficiently utilize its resources and provide products for a wider market. The basic idea is to develop and share key components and to introduce new technologies in as many products as possible. The automobile industry has for long used the concept of product platforms and has successfully achieved savings in development costs and seen a growth in sales and market share. By creating a common software platform, this concept can be applied to software development for embedded systems where software modules and applications can be shared across products within a product family. This provides better code reuse and increases standardizations across products. This thesis will examine how the concept of platforms can be applied to software development from the viewpoint of the telecommunications industry. By using the power of a common software platform, telecommunication equipment makers can accelerate product delivery and introduce new technologies to a wider range of customers. With the right strategy, they can also make their products into platforms that serve as a foundation on which other companies can develop products and offer their services.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The past decade saw increasing prominence put on teams in the workplace and concurrently a proliferation in the use of adventure-based programmes to develop teams. The study provides a description of an adventure-based team development intervention into the executive team of the Health and Racquet Club's Gauteng region. The team consisted of fourteen executives that all took part in a three-day team development programme. As a qualitative study it refers to the nature of the intervention as characterised by the participants through their experience thereof and as a descriptive study it learns about the who, what, when, where, and how of the adventure-based team development intervention. The study is done from a phenomenologicalconstructionist perspective and therefore focuses on the meaning attached to the experience by the participants while it recognises the involvement of the researcher. The study is accomplished by describing: • the principles underscoring the intervention and illustrating how the intervention is based on recent literature applying the principles to adventure-based team development; • intervention (and research) context by recounting the activities that were used; and • meaning attached to the intervention with regards to the impact thereof on individuals and team development. In Chapter One an overview of the study, the scope thereof and a formulation of the research problem are given. Chapter Two presents an overview of the team within its context and explains the process of contracting, the team's needs and the fit between the intervention and the strategic aims of the organisation. "The following Chapter provides the principles that were applied in the design and construction of the intervention and gives the theoretical underpinnings of the programme as stemming from recent literature. In Chapter Four a description of the course design as well as the activities that were used is given. This is followed by a description of the impact of the intervention on the individual members and on the team respectively. An overview of the phenomenological method of analysis of Georgi is given and it is used to analyse partlcipant's presentation of the most memorable moments they experienced during the course. The study is concluded by presenting the research outcomes, suggestions on future research and final comments.

There are numerous methodologies that organizations employ during concept development cycles. These range from agile, waterfall, point-based designs etc. One of the emerging such methodologies is called Set-Based Design (SBD). There has been flurry of research conducted into SBD process. Most of the documentations about SBD highlight its general principles and characteristics. In this thesis, I have taken a more focused approach by targeting planning and concept development phases in particular. Rules to select or deselect concepts have been extensively discussed in this research followed by providing an effective structure to implement SBD in concept development process. The form and function distinction during the concept development cycle has been clearly examined and documented. The research has been conducted independent of any organization or product type and therefore is applicable to any product development scenario and can be easily adopted by any organization.

Abstract:
This study investigated management development as a task of school managers by focusing on: • the need for a new education management development approach in South African schools; • the nature and scope of management development; • the international and national perspectives on the education management development practice; • current education management development activities in Gauteng schools; and • an education management development model for Gauteng schools. The literature study exposed the need for a new education management development approach in South African schools, the nature, scope and major aspects of management development. Furthermore, management development approaches, techniques and methods as well as guidelines for a new holistic approach are described. The investigation into the education management development practice for school managers exposed advanced levels in this regard in the UK and USA. Malaysia, Zimbabwe and Namibia are engaged in customising effective programmes for school managers. South Africa is focusing on a holistic approach, with a significant step taken being, the establishment of the National Institute for Education Management Development. The empirical study consisted of a structured questionnaire distributed to a sample population of I 08 school principals, 80 deputy principals and 210 heads of departments to investigate their management development needs, experiences and activities. Main findings revealed a lack of training for school management, uncoordinated education management development programmes, with existing ones being reactions to crisis situations, and ill-defined management roles for school managers. School principals seem solely responsible for school management, thus exposing a need for a school-based management development approach. The management development model developed for Gauteng schools focuses on whole-school development, recognises the participatory management vision of the new education system, includes stakeholder involvement in education management development and provides school managers with a model that employs the ODE Quality Assurance Framework. The major recommendations flowing from this study include customising education management linguistics for South Africa, defining job descriptions for school managers, preparing and inducing school managers, setting education management qualifications for education management posts and institutionalising the National Institute for Education Management Development.

Abstract:
With increasing urbanization and population growth, humankind faces multiple environmental challenges. Stresses on limited resources, especially water resources, are now greater than ever before. Watershed monitoring and management are important components of programs to abate water resource stresses. The increasing water quantity and quality monitoring has produced a need for better data management techniques to manage the vast amount of watershed monitoring data being observed. These data must be stored, error checked, manipulated, retrieved and shared with the watershed management community. The web-based data visualization and analysis technology has played a critical role in all aspects of watershed management. Especially in recent years, computer-assisted data analysis has matured enormously. This maturing technology makes web-based visualization and analysis technology change its role to become an integrated system which combines applications of databases, and internet technology. The main objective of this study is to develop a prototype system which has ability of data visualization and analysis. Microsoft SQL Server is used to build a comprehensive database, which includes all datasets collected by OWML. A Web-Based Data Visualization and Analysis System which provides an integrated interface for permitted users to explore, analyze and download data has been developed.

Crocco, Oliver S. "Learning, Development, and Change in a Community-Based Enterprise in Myanmar." Thesis, The George Washington University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10785241.

Abstract:

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand the process of learning and organization development and change (ODC) in a community-based enterprise in Myanmar as impacted by a certificate program in organizational development. Decades of military rule, civil war, and limited access to high-quality health and education services led to the creation of over 200,000 community-based organizations and enterprises in Myanmar. One initiative to support development and change in these organizations was the Payap University-International Rescue Committee Certificate Program in Organizational Development that was offered to members of over 100 organizations in Southeast Myanmar and along the Thai-Myanmar border from 2014-2017.

One exemplary organization that had four members participate in the certificate program was selected for this study, and data were collected over a four-week period through interviews, observations, documents, and a focus group. The primary research question framing this study addressed how the process of learning and ODC occurred in this organization as impacted by the certificate program.

The following three categories emerged from the data analysis: learning from the certificate program, the process of learning and change, and evidence for change. These findings led to an understanding of the essence of the process of learning and change, first through the diffusion of learning in the organization as a driver of development and change, and then through an open-systems change model including its inputs, changes processes, and outputs. In addition to the certificate program as an input to development and change processes, this study showed the importance of political and economic changes, culture, and organization characteristics as antecedents to change. This research highlighted the centrality of social learning through role modeling in the diffusion of learning and demonstrated the importance of buy-in from the organization’s members as well as their perceived alignment of the change efforts with the needs or the organization.

Abstract:
Owing to the steep dose fall-off curves of high precision and accuracy radiation therapy (RT) modalities such as stereotactic body RT (SBRT), treatment plans with extraordinarily small margins to organs at risk (OARs), such as the spinal cord, has been made possible. With this development, patient movements during treatment, i.e. intrafraction motion (IFM), must be monitored more closely. This master thesis was aimed at developing an A-mode ultrasound prototype to detect the motions of the cervical spine as part of an IFM management (IFMM) system. Current IFMM systems have several drawbacks, including invasiveness and indirect measurements. The existing prototype was tested in order to identify areas of improvement. The prototype developed was equipped with a preconditioning circuit that retains the frequency information of the signal. Furthermore, software was developed based on wavelet filtering and enveloping using the Hilbert transform. Multiple logic algorithms were added in order to handle lost signals, competing echoes, echoes from soft tissues etc. The newly-developed prototype was found to have higher accuracy and precision than the pre-existing prototype. It was also more robust when measuring distance to the spine. A difficulty in segmenting the echo for bone arises for low quality signals. Therefore a compromise exists between setup time, including probe adjustment, and signal quality. Future work includes the manufacturing of a new neck rest to enable robust probe adjustment and fixation.

Poursamar, Seyed Ali. "Investigation into the development of a gelatin-based biocomposite for wound-management." Thesis, University of Northampton, 2015. http://nectar.northampton.ac.uk/8878/.

Full text
Abstract:
The application of wound dressings is the most common method of wound management. In the past two decades, a novel type of wound dressing has been introduced that functions according to tissue engineering principles and provides an implantable platform for wound regeneration. The focus of this thesis was to develop such a wound dressing with multi-layer architecture that would be capable of absorbing wound exudates, be flexible with adequate contact with the wound bed, and have desirable porosity to allow cell migration. This thesis concludes with the development of a wound dressing which is comprised of three separate layers bonded together. The first layer, which would be directly in contact with the wound bed, was a gelatin scaffold of uniform porosity produced through an optimised gas foaming method. In this part of the research, in addition to optimising the gas foaming process parameters, a comprehensive comparison between applying four different crosslinking agents (glutaraldehyde, hexamethylene diisocyante, poly ether epoxide, and genipin) was carried out. The scaffolds, although showing a uniform porosity, had the tensile strength (240 kPa) lower than the reported value for natural skin (850 kPa). To strengthen the porous scaffold, a middle layer was applied and bonded to it. The middle layer with a thickness of 120m was adhered to the gelatin scaffold, functioning as a mechanical support and exudate absorbent. This layer comprised of a chitosan-gelatin composite which exhibited a tensile strength of 26 MPa. The chitosangelatin membrane bonded to the gelatin scaffold had a combined tensile strength of 644 kPa, approaching natural skin tensile properties. The wound dressing assembly was completed by applying a plasticised gelatin membrane as the third and final layer above the chitosan-gelatin composite. This membrane with a thickness of 130m, was plasticised using glycerol. It was designed with the primary function of covering the wound against debris, bacteria, and excessive manipulation, but also safeguarding the chitosan-gelatin membrane from disintegration once the wound exudate had been absorbed. The presented multi-layer design architecture provides a combination of a conventional wound dressing occlusive functionality with a modern tissue engineering approach in one product. Application of gas foaming resulted in a pore system that had an optimised porosity in comparison with commercially available wound dressings, by providing a more spherical pore system with pore size distribution closer to desirable values for skin tissue engineering (125m). It is anticipated that the design of the biomaterial would result in accelerated wound healing and reducing long term care in a cost-effective manner.

Full text
Abstract:
Anticancer drug resistance is a major issue in the management of cancer disease. Efflux transporters contribute to the multidrug resistance by altering the intracellular disposition of cytotoxic drugs. In the past, the inhibition of P-gp efflux transporter essentially failed because of the lack of adequate methods to identify their mechanisms of action. Recently, new inhibitors of BCRP, one of the latest efflux transporter that have been discovered, have been developed that allow re-testing the multidrug resistance inhibition through efflux inhibition. Nevertheless, to avoid the same issues of development as for P-gp inhibitors, new methods have to be used. This PhD work aims to demonstrate the benefits of mechanistic models to support the development of efflux transporter inhibitors and more generally of oncology compounds through two axes: - The development of mechanistic models of the interaction between cytotoxic and efflux transporter inhibitors - The development of quantitative tumour growth inhibition models to early evaluate oncology compounds and optimize patients’ response The results obtained with this approach allow the identification of key mechanisms of efflux transporter inhibitors and demonstrate the power of modelling and simulation to support oncology drug development

Abstract:
The goal of this research was to explore the use of machine learning to assist in the development of knowledge-based systems (KBS) in dairy farming. A framework was first developed which described the various types of management and control activities in dairy farming and the types of information flows among these activities. This framework provided a basis for the creation of computerized information systems and helped to identify the analysis of group-average lactation curves as a promising area of application. A case-acquisition and decision-support system was developed to assist a domain specialist in generating example cases for machine learning. The specialist classified data from 33 herds enrolled with the Quebec dairy herd analysis service, resulting in 1428 lactations and 7684 tests of individual cows, classified as outlier or non-outlier, and 99 interpretations of group-average lactation curves. To enable the performance analysis of classifiers, generated with machine learning from these small data sets, a method was established involving cross-validation runs, relative operating characteristic curves, and analysis of variance. In experiments to filter lactations and tests, classification performance was significantly affected by preprocessing of examples, creation of additional attributes, choice of machine-learning algorithm, and algorithm configuration. For the filtering of individual tests, naive-Bayes classification showed significantly better performance than decision-tree induction. However, the specialist considered the decision trees as more transparent than the knowledge generated with naive Bayes. The creation of a series of three classifiers with increased sensitivity at the expense of reduced specificity per classification task, allows users of a final KBS to choose the desired tendency of classifying new cases as abnormal. For the main interpretation tasks, satisfactory performance was achieved. For the filtering tasks, performance was fai

The development of increasingly complex, innovative systems under greater constraints has been the trend over the past several decades. In order to be successful, organizations must develop products that meet customer needs more effectively than the competitors' alternatives. The development of these concepts is based on a broad set of stakeholder objectives, from which alternative designs are developed and compared. When properly performed, this process helps those involved understand the benefits and drawbacks of each option. This is crucial as firms need to effectively and quickly explore many concepts, and easily determine those most likely to succeed. It is generally accepted that a methodical design approach leads to the reduction in design flaws and cost over a product's life cycle. Several techniques have been developed to facilitate these efforts. However, the traditional tools and work products are isolated, and require diligent manual inspection. It is expected that the effectiveness of the high-level product design and development will improve dramatically through the adoption of computer based modeling and simulation. This emerging capability can mitigate the challenges and risks imposed by complex systems by enforcing rigor and precision. Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) is a methodology for designing systems using interconnected computer models. The recent proliferation of MBSE is evidence of its ability to improve the design fidelity and enhance communication among development teams. Existing descriptions of leveraging MBSE for deriving requirements and system design are prevalent. However, very few descriptions of model-based concept development have been presented. This may be due to the lack of MBSE methodologies for performing concept development. Teams that attempt a model-based approach without well defined, structured strategy are often unsuccessful. However, when MBSE is combined with a clear methodology, designs can be more efficiently generated and evaluated. While it may not be feasible to provide a "standard" methodology for concept development, a framework is envisioned that incorporates a variety of methods and techniques. This thesis proposes such a framework and presents an example based on a simulated concept development effort.
