Full textThe selection of parameters and of the level of detail in the model reflects a compromise between realism and simplicity. At the development stage, the selection of project specifications concerns the mining method and capacity installation. Decisions on cut-off grade and/or cut-off value, capacity utilization, the sequence of mining, stockpiling and expansion are made during the mine life. Decision making takes place within a framework provided by an abstraction of the operating environment of a mine, and must comply with a set of rules. These rules ensure that only feasible decisions are made. Within this constraint, the model offers a high degree of flexibility in setting the values of the decision variables.
The Mine Manager combines elements of geology, mining, management and gaming. Conditional simulation is used to generate grades of copper, zinc and gold in a massive sulphide deposit. Mining operations in both underground and open-pit mines are modelled, and hypothetical capital and operating cost functions are developed for the mine and mill. A pricing model generates new price series for each run of the game.
The Mine Manager is operated interactively on a microcomputer through the use of modular software. The user interface and a sample run of the game are described, and the information displays created by the game are presented.

Full textTanzania has exceptional wildlife, environment and natural resources. The traditional way of conserving nature and wildlife has been through parks and reserves. In the 1980’s community based conservation emerged as a resource management paradigm. Its premise was that giving local people a stake in wildlife would increase their incentive to conserve it. This would make wildlife an important engine of local economic development. The core elements in community based conservation projects concern development, conservation and sustainable land use. Its ambition both to improve conditions for the local communities and conserve wildlife seems like a win-win situation, but has this really been working that well when applied in the field? This study aims to review the Community Based Wildlife Management in Tanzania, exemplified by a case study in the Wildlife Management Area in Burunge, located in a migration corridor between two national parks. There has been much controversy surrounding community-based management projects. While gains for the local communities have not always been clear, gains for wildlife seem more evident. Both species numbers and individuals have increased, but at the same time there has also been increasing conflicts between locals and wildlife. This is a sign that the WMAs are only halfway to towards reaching their goal of improving conditions for both communities and wildlife. CBC stills seems like the way forwards, maybe in a modified form which allows more government control, but where local people’s rights are still respected.

All firms in any mature product development industry are being pressured into performing 'better, faster, and cheaper' by both customers and competitors. In short, firms are being tasked with doing more, with less, faster. This leads to product development organizations being unrealistically tasked to deliver on these programs that often lead to projects falling behind schedule, over budget, and with inadequate quality. While striving to do the right actions to survive, the management of these firms may be leading their firms to disaster through over commitment, and short-term management actions to address the quality, budget, and schedule shortfalls. An understanding of the system dynamics associated with the program management of new product development (NPD) programs is essential to reversing this trend. Several corporations are instituting system dynamics in their management and executive training curricula to affect correct policies, procedures, and behaviors that lead to success. However, because the correct policies, procedures, and behaviors as revealed by system dynamics analysis are counter-intuitive and opposite those policies currently employed in program management, a method is needed to drive the learning of system dynamics so that it becomes ingrained in the program management thought processes. A management flight simulator (MFS) of the program management of a new product development project based on system dynamics provides the hands on experience that managers can learn the consequences of non systems-thinking policies on project performance and how system dynamics based policies can lead to greater success. This thesis provides an overview of the system dynamics of project management in new product development and insight into the
(cont.) correct policies, procedures, and behaviors that lead to success. Research on the role of MFSs in driving the learning of system dynamics principles is explored. A single-phase system dynamics model for a new product development program and a MFS is developed to teach the fundamental lessons of system dynamics applied to product development project management and is to be incorporated in the BP Project Academy. Insight from my own experiences in product development is incorporated in this MFS as well as in recommendations for further development.

Full textPsychological ownership has come to light as an important state with strong implications on employee attitudes and behaviors. However, relatively little attention has been paid towards the process by which employees come to develop feelings of psychological ownership towards their work, particularly regarding the role played by individual traits in this process. Ownership theorists claim that personality and disposition should matter (Mayhew, Ashkanasy, Bramble, & Gardner, 2007; Pierce & Jussila, 2011), yet these claims remain largely untested. The purpose of the current investigation is to address these gaps by exploring how employee disposition and job design contribute to the development of job-based psychological ownership. Employing a cross-sectional approach, data were collected using an online survey where participants were asked to complete measures of trait positive affectivity (PA), job characteristics, work experiences, and job-based psychological ownership. Because the study focused on job-related phenomenon, participants were required to work full-time in a location other than their home to be considered for this study. The final 426 participants (60.4% male, 39.6% female) had an average tenure of 5.04 years (SD = 5.03) and represented a wide range of industries and job levels (23.7% entry-level, 31.0% individual contributor, 17.8% supervisory, 10.8% mid-level manager, 2.8% senior manager, 13.8% technical or professional). Hypotheses were tested using bootstrapped regression analyses and structural equation modeling. Results indicated that job autonomy has a positive effect on job-based psychological ownership (B = 0.501, CI 0.415 to 0.594) through three mediated paths: investment of ideas, effort, and self into one’s work (B = 0.252, CI 0.178 to 0.349), experienced control and influence over one’s work (B = 0.214, CI 0.137 to 0.293), and intimate knowledge and understanding of one’s job (B = 0.036, CI 0.003 to 0.082). Employee PA significantly moderated the mediated path from autonomy to ownership through experienced control (Index of ModMed = 0.017, CI 0.000 to 0.045), such that control mattered more for high-PA employees. Exploratory analyses suggest that PA may play a dual role – as a moderator of autonomy’s effects on control (B = 0.052, CI 0.009 to 0.100), and as an indirect effect on ownership itself. For example, high-PA employees reported greater investment of self in their work, which in turn predicted job-based psychological ownership (B = 0.255, CI 0.177 to 0.361). Ultimately, job autonomy stood out as having a particularly strong and consistent positive effect on job-based psychological ownership. Results suggest that all employees, from the most enthusiastic to the most apathetic can experience this positive psychological state. That is, as long as they are afforded a high level of autonomy in deciding how to plan and carry out their work.

In the Information Technology Era today, software has been one of the most significant elements to help organizations achieve increased productivity and commercial success. For developers to create effective software, an appropriate development process must be applied. Generally, the process of developing software can be considered as having six phases: requirements engineering, design, implementation, testing, maintenance, and project management. Over the past thirty years, different kinds of life cycle models have been developed by applying these phases to provide developers with the most appropriate procedures for projects of various types. In addition, a set of development fundamentals should be considered during the process to optimize time, effort and cost in developing each project. This thesis studies the software development process and its effects on the development schedule of a Pavement Management and Inspection System (PMIS) project as a case study. From the case study, it can be concluded that choosing the appropriate life cycle model and applying the pertinent fundamentals, with the essential components of the development speed, can lead the project to be a success. Problems encountered during the development process are also valuable information to study as it may prevent them from occurring in the future.

A platform based approach for product development allows companies to eliminate redundancies, efficiently utilize its resources and provide products for a wider market. The basic idea is to develop and share key components and to introduce new technologies in as many products as possible. The automobile industry has for long used the concept of product platforms and has successfully achieved savings in development costs and seen a growth in sales and market share. By creating a common software platform, this concept can be applied to software development for embedded systems where software modules and applications can be shared across products within a product family. This provides better code reuse and increases standardizations across products. This thesis will examine how the concept of platforms can be applied to software development from the viewpoint of the telecommunications industry. By using the power of a common software platform, telecommunication equipment makers can accelerate product delivery and introduce new technologies to a wider range of customers. With the right strategy, they can also make their products into platforms that serve as a foundation on which other companies can develop products and offer their services.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The past decade saw increasing prominence put on teams in the workplace and concurrently a proliferation in the use of adventure-based programmes to develop teams. The study provides a description of an adventure-based team development intervention into the executive team of the Health and Racquet Club's Gauteng region. The team consisted of fourteen executives that all took part in a three-day team development programme. As a qualitative study it refers to the nature of the intervention as characterised by the participants through their experience thereof and as a descriptive study it learns about the who, what, when, where, and how of the adventure-based team development intervention. The study is done from a phenomenologicalconstructionist perspective and therefore focuses on the meaning attached to the experience by the participants while it recognises the involvement of the researcher. The study is accomplished by describing: • the principles underscoring the intervention and illustrating how the intervention is based on recent literature applying the principles to adventure-based team development; • intervention (and research) context by recounting the activities that were used; and • meaning attached to the intervention with regards to the impact thereof on individuals and team development. In Chapter One an overview of the study, the scope thereof and a formulation of the research problem are given. Chapter Two presents an overview of the team within its context and explains the process of contracting, the team's needs and the fit between the intervention and the strategic aims of the organisation. "The following Chapter provides the principles that were applied in the design and construction of the intervention and gives the theoretical underpinnings of the programme as stemming from recent literature. In Chapter Four a description of the course design as well as the activities that were used is given. This is followed by a description of the impact of the intervention on the individual members and on the team respectively. An overview of the phenomenological method of analysis of Georgi is given and it is used to analyse partlcipant's presentation of the most memorable moments they experienced during the course. The study is concluded by presenting the research outcomes, suggestions on future research and final comments.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Gedurende die afgelope dekade is aansienlik meer prominensie aan spanne in die werkplek toegeken. Daarmee saam is daar ook 'n toename in die gebruik van avontuur-gebaseerde ontwikkelingsprogramme vir spanne. Hierdie studie verskaf 'n beskrywing van 'n avontuur-gebaseerde spanontwikkelingsintervensie waaraan die uitvoerende span van die Health and Racquet Club se Gautengstreek onderwerp is. Die span het bestaan uit veertien bestuurders wat almal aan 'n drie-dag spanontwikkelingsprogram deelgeneem het. Die studie is kwalitatief van aard in die wyse waarop die aard van die intervensie deur die deelnemers gekenmerk word deur hul belewenis daarvan. As 'n beskrywende studie beskryf dit die wie, wat, waar en hoe van die avontuur-gebaseerde spanontwikkelingsintervensie. Die studie word vanaf 'n fenomenologies-konstruksionistiese perspektief aangepak. Dit behels dat daar op die betekenis wat aan die ervaring deur die deelnemers geheg word, gefokus word. Die betrokkenheid van die navorser word terselfdertyd erken. Die studie is voltooi deur 'n beskrywing aan te bied van: - die beginsels wat die intervensie onderlê en hoe die intervensie gebaseer is op 'n toepassing van resente onwikkelings in navorsing rakende avontuur-gebaseerde spanontwikkeling; - die intervensie- (en navorsings-) konteks deur die aktiwiteite wat gebruik is te skets; - die betekenis wat aan die intervensie geheg is met betrekking tot die impak daarvan op individue en spanontwikkeling onderskeidelik. In Hoofstuk Een word 'n oorsig van die studie, die omvang daarvan en 'n formulering van die navorsingsprobleem verskaf. Hoofstuk Twee bied 'n oorsig van die span binne sy konteks aan en verduidelik die proses van kontraktering, die span se behoeftes en die belyning van die intervensie met die strategiese doelwitte van die organisasie. Die volgende Hoofstuk bied die beginsels wat toegepas is in die ontwerp en daarstelling van die intervensie en gee die teoretiese onderbou van die program soos dit put uit resente literatuur. In Hoofstuk Vier word 'n beskrywing van die kursusontwerp asook die aktiwiteite wat gebruik is verskaf. Dit word gevolg deur 'n beskrywing van die impak van die intervensie op individuele deelnemers en die span onderskeidelik. 'n Oorsig van die fenomenologiese metode van Georgi word verskaf en dit word aangewend om 'n analise van die deelnemers se weergawe van die mees betekenisvolle oomblikke wat hulle gedurende die program ervaar het, te doen. Die studie word afgesluit met die navorsingsresultate, aanbevelings oor toekomstige navorsing en finale opmerkings.

There are numerous methodologies that organizations employ during concept development cycles. These range from agile, waterfall, point-based designs etc. One of the emerging such methodologies is called Set-Based Design (SBD). There has been flurry of research conducted into SBD process. Most of the documentations about SBD highlight its general principles and characteristics. In this thesis, I have taken a more focused approach by targeting planning and concept development phases in particular. Rules to select or deselect concepts have been extensively discussed in this research followed by providing an effective structure to implement SBD in concept development process. The form and function distinction during the concept development cycle has been clearly examined and documented. The research has been conducted independent of any organization or product type and therefore is applicable to any product development scenario and can be easily adopted by any organization.

Full textThe purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand the process of learning and organization development and change (ODC) in a community-based enterprise in Myanmar as impacted by a certificate program in organizational development. Decades of military rule, civil war, and limited access to high-quality health and education services led to the creation of over 200,000 community-based organizations and enterprises in Myanmar. One initiative to support development and change in these organizations was the Payap University-International Rescue Committee Certificate Program in Organizational Development that was offered to members of over 100 organizations in Southeast Myanmar and along the Thai-Myanmar border from 2014-2017.
One exemplary organization that had four members participate in the certificate program was selected for this study, and data were collected over a four-week period through interviews, observations, documents, and a focus group. The primary research question framing this study addressed how the process of learning and ODC occurred in this organization as impacted by the certificate program.
The following three categories emerged from the data analysis: learning from the certificate program, the process of learning and change, and evidence for change. These findings led to an understanding of the essence of the process of learning and change, first through the diffusion of learning in the organization as a driver of development and change, and then through an open-systems change model including its inputs, changes processes, and outputs. In addition to the certificate program as an input to development and change processes, this study showed the importance of political and economic changes, culture, and organization characteristics as antecedents to change. This research highlighted the centrality of social learning through role modeling in the diffusion of learning and demonstrated the importance of buy-in from the organization’s members as well as their perceived alignment of the change efforts with the needs or the organization.

Full textAnticancer drug resistance is a major issue in the management of cancer disease. Efflux transporters contribute to the multidrug resistance by altering the intracellular disposition of cytotoxic drugs. In the past, the inhibition of P-gp efflux transporter essentially failed because of the lack of adequate methods to identify their mechanisms of action. Recently, new inhibitors of BCRP, one of the latest efflux transporter that have been discovered, have been developed that allow re-testing the multidrug resistance inhibition through efflux inhibition. Nevertheless, to avoid the same issues of development as for P-gp inhibitors, new methods have to be used. This PhD work aims to demonstrate the benefits of mechanistic models to support the development of efflux transporter inhibitors and more generally of oncology compounds through two axes: - The development of mechanistic models of the interaction between cytotoxic and efflux transporter inhibitors - The development of quantitative tumour growth inhibition models to early evaluate oncology compounds and optimize patients’ response The results obtained with this approach allow the identification of key mechanisms of efflux transporter inhibitors and demonstrate the power of modelling and simulation to support oncology drug development

The development of increasingly complex, innovative systems under greater constraints has been the trend over the past several decades. In order to be successful, organizations must develop products that meet customer needs more effectively than the competitors' alternatives. The development of these concepts is based on a broad set of stakeholder objectives, from which alternative designs are developed and compared. When properly performed, this process helps those involved understand the benefits and drawbacks of each option. This is crucial as firms need to effectively and quickly explore many concepts, and easily determine those most likely to succeed. It is generally accepted that a methodical design approach leads to the reduction in design flaws and cost over a product's life cycle. Several techniques have been developed to facilitate these efforts. However, the traditional tools and work products are isolated, and require diligent manual inspection. It is expected that the effectiveness of the high-level product design and development will improve dramatically through the adoption of computer based modeling and simulation. This emerging capability can mitigate the challenges and risks imposed by complex systems by enforcing rigor and precision. Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) is a methodology for designing systems using interconnected computer models. The recent proliferation of MBSE is evidence of its ability to improve the design fidelity and enhance communication among development teams. Existing descriptions of leveraging MBSE for deriving requirements and system design are prevalent. However, very few descriptions of model-based concept development have been presented. This may be due to the lack of MBSE methodologies for performing concept development. Teams that attempt a model-based approach without well defined, structured strategy are often unsuccessful. However, when MBSE is combined with a clear methodology, designs can be more efficiently generated and evaluated. While it may not be feasible to provide a "standard" methodology for concept development, a framework is envisioned that incorporates a variety of methods and techniques. This thesis proposes such a framework and presents an example based on a simulated concept development effort.
