This article discusses the development of an affordable software and hardware complex for monitoring and diagnostics of rotary machines with fluid–film bearings. The software part of the complex was developed on the basis of a four–layer fully–connected artificial neural network. The network was trained and tested according to the results of experiments in a test rig. The contact resistance sensors measurement results were used as input for training. The basis of the hardware of the complex was the Nucleo–144 board with a trained network. Testing of the developed complex showed a diagnostic ac

Abstract:
This chapter explores the pacifism of the early Christian church and how the conversion of Constantine in the fourth century led to the development of the just war doctrine. At the conclusion of World War II, the advent of the nuclear arms race rendered some aspects of the just war doctrine obsolete. Pope John XXIII addressed these concerns in his encyclical Pacem in Terris, released in 1963. Numerous Catholic peace groups thought that the Vatican did not take a strong enough stance on war, militarism, and nuclear weapons. The Catholic Worker movement called for a return to pacifism and introduced the techniques of nonviolent noncooperation with civil defense drills in the 1950s. The chapter covers other Catholic peace movements and organizations, including Pax Christi, the Catholic Left that opposed the Vietnam War through draft card burnings and draft board raids, and the Plowshares movement, whose members damaged nuclear weapons to obstruct the nuclear arms race. Eventually, the US Catholic Bishops released the pastoral letter The Challenge of Peace, which condemned nuclear weapons and called for disarmament.

Abstract:
To protect safety-critical systems from common-cause failures that can lead to potentially dangerous outcomes, special methods are applied, including multi-version technologies operating at different levels of diversity. A model representing different diversity types during the development of safety-critical systems is suggested. The model addresses diversity types that are the most expedient in providing required safety. The diversity of complex electronic components (FPGA, etc.), printed circuit boards, manufacturers, specification languages, design, and program languages, etc. are considered. The challenges addressed are related to factors of scale and dependencies among diversity types, since not all combinations of used diversity are feasible. Taking these dependencies into consideration, the model simplifies the choice of diversity options. This chapter presents a cost effective approach to selection of the most diverse NPP Reactor Trip System (RTS) under uncertainty. The selection of a pair of primary and secondary RTS is named a diversity strategy. All possible strategies are evaluated on an ordinal scale with linguistic values provided by experts. These values express the expert’s degree of confidence that evaluated variants of secondary RTS are different from primary. All diversity strategies are evaluated on a set of linguistic diversity criteria, which are included into a corresponding diversity attribute. The generic fuzzy diversity score is an aggregation of the linguistic values provided by the experts to obtain a collective assessment of the secondary RTS’s similarity (difference) with a primary one. This rational diversity strategy is found during the exploitation stage, taking into consideration the fuzzy diversity score and cost.

Abstract:
“Chemistry has a position in the center of the sciences, bordering onto physics, which provides its theoretical foundation, on one side, and onto biology on the other, living organisms being the most complex of all chemical systems” (Malmström et al.). Thus begins a recent essay on the development of modern chemistry. Philosophers have long wrestled with how best to describe the exact relationship between chemistry and physics. Is it an example of a classic reduction? But before we ask whether chemistry could in principle be derived from physics, there is a prior question: How well integrated is the science of chemistry itself? This chapter argues that although there is a coherent explanatory core within chemical theory, contingency plays a larger role than is usually recognized. Furthermore, these phenomena at the boundaries of traditional chemistry education are where some of the most important current research is occurring. I will first adopt a quasi-historical approach in this essay, including anecdotes from my own educational trajectory. I then briefly discuss how our current understanding of the explanatory structure of chemistry should be reflected in education today. The professor of quantum chemistry at the University of Illinois in the 1950s told us a story from his PhD defense. His director, Linus Pauling, walked into the room and said something to this effect: “Well, Karplus, you’ve done a bunch of calculations on the hydrogen molecule ion (H2 +). Very nice. But you claim to be a chemist. So please write the Periodic Table on the board for us.” Who knows exactly what point Pauling was actually trying to make, but it reminds us of this basic point. The periodic table with its horizontal and vertical trends is still the basis of the classification of enormous amounts of information about the formulae and properties of chemical compounds. Mendeleev would not have understood talk of strontium-90, but he would have realized immediately that this product of nuclear testing would enter the body in a manner similar to calcium.
