Abstract:
The phenomenon of the Kosach-Dragomanov family is considered in this article as a national archetype of the Ukrainian mentality, the influence of this family on the formation of such an aristocratic personality as Lesіa Ukrainka during difficult times of socio-political life. Special attention has been paid to the creative and human relationships between Lesia and her uncle Mykhailo Drahomanov whose influence on her was undeniable and extremely beneficial. Her pedigree in particular has been traced. Heredity of generations, the appearance of ingenious personalities is always the subject of special attention. The decisive moment in defining these processes is the appearance of new people, more precisely people of new formation, people of progressive thinking, who are the driving force and foundation of historical change. New generations should not be indifferent to their great predecessors. Lesіa Ukrainka as a creative nature could not be indifferent to the talents and skills of talented people, the circle of her friends, acquaintances and supporters was extremely wide as well as the measurement of her interests. The subject of this article is to highlight the important role of the family and the environment in general in forming a young person as a personality. The challenges of the modern times, in particular, in the field of humanistic educational tendencies, require an appeal to moral authorities in the history of the development of the Ukrainian nation. Keywords: apriori fantasies; bourgeois liberal; positivist scientist; state terrorism; amateurism; ethnography; “Europeanism”; national consciousness; political leader; socio-political thought.

Abstract:
Introduction. Lemna minor L. (duckweed) refers to the duckweed subfamily (Lemnaceae S. F. Gray) and widely distributed in ponds of Russia. Literature data confirm the possibility of harvesting significant volumes of this raw material in natural habitat and grown in aquaculture. The process of biosynthetic accumulation in duckweed fronds provides a variety of compounds with a wide spectrum of biological activity. Therefore, the use of raw materials Lemna minor L. is promising for the development of drugs and parapharmaceutical products. Thus, it is an urgent task to quantify active components of duckweed and standardize (determination of criteria for identification, quality and safety) plant material.Aim. Establish macro- and microscopic characteristics of raw materials and develop methods for the quantitative determination of the main groups of biologically active substances (BAS) for standardization of raw duckweed.Materials and methods. Samples of duckweed was collected in natural habitats of Western Siberia. Macro- and microscopic assay, HPLC, UV-spectrometry were used in research process. Results and discussion. Were established the criteria for identification of duckweed fronds by studying external (macroscopic) and microscopic features of raw material Lemna minor L. Was developed and validated the procedure of the quantitative determination of phenolcarboxylic acids in raw material Lemna minor L.Conclusion. The study of external (macroscopic) and microscopic features provided the criteria for identification of the raw material Lemna minor L. The technique for the quantitative analysis of polysaccharides using gravimetry does not need validation, because is a direct method of substance measurement. Was validated quantification method of phenolcarboxylic acids (in terms of chlorogenic acid) by criteria of linearity, repeatability, in-laboratory precision and accuracy. Was established quality criteria for identification and quantitative assay, which can be used in the draft for normative documents for medicinal plant raw material of Lemna minor L. «Duckweed fronds».

Abstract:
Abstract Our objective was to evaluate the inclusion of a novel plant-based protein (Lemna; MC Select; Parabel®; Vero Beach, FL) in dog diets at 0, 5, and 10% and cat diets at 0, 10 and 15% for palatability, stool quality, and nutrient digestibility. We hypothesized that Lemna would be a viable protein source in both cat and dog diets by showing no detriments to nutrition outcomes. All feeding tests were conducted at an independent research facility (Susquehanna, PA). A standard 2 bowl palatability test over a 2-day period was done with adult dogs and cats (n = 30 each) to determine intake ratios (IR) between test diets (Lemna -containing diets) and control (0% Lemna) diet. Total tract nutrient digestibility was conducted with 18 adult dogs and 21 adult cats (n=6–7 per diet) with 5 days of diet acclimation followed by 5 days of total fecal collection. Stool quality was evaluated on a 1–5 scale where 1= non-formed/diarrhea and 5= hard, formed. Palatability data was analyzed via Wilcoxon Signed Rank, and digestibility and stool quality data were analyzed by ANOVA with a Tukey’s post-hoc means separation (SAS version 9.4). Intake ratios in cats between 10% Lemna and control were significantly (P < 0.05) in favor of control, while no difference was observed between 15% Lemna and control. For dogs, 5% and 10% Lemna had significantly (P < 0.05) lower IR demonstrating a preference to control. Both cats and dogs fed Lemna diets had acceptable stool quality (3.42 avg for cat and 3.34 avg for dog). No detriments in nutrient digestibility were observed in dogs fed 5% and 10% Lemna; however, cats fed 10% and 15% Lemna had significantly (P < 0.05) lower dry matter, protein, and energy digestibility versus control. In conclusion, these data suggest more development is needed for Lemna inclusion in companion animal diets. Thursday, July 23, 2020

So, Lydia, Erin Miller, and John Eastwood. "Exploring Mothers’ Experience of a Linguistic Feedback Technology for Children at Risk of Poor Language Development: Qualitative Pilot Study." JMIR Pediatrics and Parenting 4, no. 3 (August 31, 2021): e27049. http://dx.doi.org/10.2196/27049.

Full text
Abstract:
Background The early language environment is important for language development and a child’s life-course trajectory. Risk factors associated with poor language development outcomes in children include maternal anxiety and depression, low educational attainment, substance misuse, and low socioeconomic status. Language Environment Analysis (LENA) is a wearable technology designed to promote caregivers’ engagement in supporting their children’s language development. LENA provides quantitative linguistic feedback, which has been shown to improve caregiver language output, thus enhancing a child’s language environment. There is limited research on the uptake of this technology by families with developmentally at-risk children. Objective This qualitative study aims to explore the conditions under which mothers with children at risk of poor developmental outcomes are willing to adopt the use of LENA to monitor and improve caregiver language output. Methods Using a qualitative interpretive design, semistructured, in-depth interviews were conducted with 8 mothers. Participants were recruited purposively to select the maximal variation of socioeconomic and ethnodemographic backgrounds. The transcribed interview data were analyzed thematically and interpretatively. Themes were mapped abductively to an extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology, which included contextual factors for LENA acceptance. Results Factors that influenced the intention to use LENA included both technology-specific acceptance factors and contextual factors. Technology acceptance themes included reassurance, feeling overwhelmed, and trust. These themes were mapped to performance expectancy, effort expectancy, and social influence. Contextual themes included emergent success and the intrusion of past difficulties. These were mapped to parenting self-efficacy and perceived risk. The theme of building on success described behavioral intention. Mothers were more likely to adopt LENA when the technology was viewed as acceptable, and this was influenced by parenting self-efficacy and perceived risk. Conclusions LENA is a technology that is acceptable to mothers with children who are at risk of poor language development outcomes. Further studies are needed to establish LENA’s effectiveness as an adjunct to strategies to enrich a child’s early language environment.

Abstract:
Objective and aim: Adults use child-directed-speech in their interaction with infants,w hich has been confirmed to have positive effects on their language learning. This study was a part of the Words make a difference project at Karolinska Institutet (KI). Within this project, a new intervention model has been developed for caregivers of children with a hearing impairment, called the Prevention Education Program forParents (PEPP). The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether caregiver’s use of child-directed speech differed between a structured play situation and in home environment. The aim was also to evaluate the PEPP model's methods of analysis; video and LENA-recording, concerning measurement of child-directed speech in a structured play situation. Data from the present study were also collected as reference data for the Words make a difference. Methods: The study involved four families with typically hearing infants aged 0-7months and their caregivers. Data collection was undertaken using PEPP's evaluation methods in a short, structured play situation and a full day recording in a home environment. Results and conlusion: In some cases, the care-givers’ use of child-directed speech differed between the structured play situation and the full-day recording in the home environment. The two data collection methods (audio recording and video recording) during the structured play situation were in good agreement regarding the use of child directed speech. The conclusion is that the PEPP model is a functional method for examining the spoken language environment of infants.

Abstract:
Common duckweeds – Lemna – are free-floating aquatic macrophytes belonging to Lemnaceae family. They occur universally, in tropical and temperate zones and are enabled to grow in stagnant, slow-flowing, nutrient-enriched waters. They have an ability to grow over a wide range of temperatures (6 – 33 0C) and pH (optimum 5.5 – 7.5). Lemna species also manifest a characteristic macrophyte community in association with plants functioning as a dominant primary producer. Asexual mode of reproduction is exclusive and therefore, all resources are directed towards vegetative growth. Structure wise they show leaflets (frond) and root-like diffuse form. This simple morphological and physiological form offers special scientific and engineering properties – reflected in easy handling and manipulation under laboratory conditions. As a result they are regarded as a model plant system for a number of chemical and biogeochemical studies. Climate change affects plant growth and physiology. For example, increasing atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) and ozone (O3) or increase in ultraviolet (UV) radiation (due to the thinning of the ozone layer) can have pronounced effects on the growth and development of plants. In many instances the decrease in growth rate can create disturbances in photosynthetic processes. In the recent past there has been a surge in the interest in looking for alternative remediation technologies to meet formidable demands of polluting materials and situations. One such approach is phytoremediation – the use of plants and associated microbes for environmental cleanup. Cardinal points in favour of such an approach are – cost-effectiveness, natural energy-driven and minimal capital and running costs. Potency of Lemna spp. as a phytoremediation agent as well as its limitations haven dealt with in details in literature. Moreover, Lemna spp. are accepted and highly standardized as test organisms in aquatic ecotoxicology. The authors have shown earlier that Lemna spp. can play a vital role in combating pollution burden in a glaring local situation of river pollution. However, the recent trend in research indicates that Lemna spp (duckweeds at large) can play a critical and sensitive role in being an indicator of overt and subtle climate change. The following is an attempt to take a review of such recent trends.

Abstract:
Community land use decisions benefit from spatially explicit community preferences; yet, the methods for incorporating the preferences for intangible values are challenging to represent spatially. The purpose of this chapter is to provide an introduction to the Total Value Assessment Tool for Farmland (TVAL-Farm), a tool that incorporates scenic quality and cultural heritage elements to create an enhanced Land Evaluation and Site Assessment (LESA) model. The chapter describes the development of TVAL-Farm and its implications for farmland preservation in Western North Carolina. The enhancement of the LESA model created by TVAL-Farm provides insight and a framework on how to collect and incorporate qualitative public values within the quantitative environment of a Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Inclusion of these public values is essential for holistically valuing land parcels and understanding community land use preferences. Increased use of modern technologies in the data collection process will promote a cost-effective method of community participation and engagement.

Abstract:
Lena Hill’s “The Politics of Fatherhood in Three Days Before the Shooting . . .” examines Ellison’s use of fathers and sons to explore the role of African Americans in U.S. history. Hill focuses on the use of visual art in Three Days to present a sophisticated response by African Americans to their ambivalent place in America’s political development. She shows how the novel’s protagonist, the Rev. A. Z. Hickman, appreciates and reflects upon visual art, thereby embodying what Ellison believes African Americans contributed to the land of their birth: an astute, self-reliant judgment of the nation’s practices in light of its professions. In contrast with sociologically-reductive accounts of black victimhood, Hill reads Ellison as interpreting American history as involving significant African American agency and influence that belies their status as second-class citizens.

Abstract:
By way of conclusion and further development of the notion of a cinema of crisis, I will extend briefly this study’s theoretical framework to the work of Harmony Korine, Kelly Reichardt and the ‘Mumblecore’ movement – or, more specifically, the work of Lena Dunham. However, in order to outline these further facets of a cinema of crisis, it is necessary at this juncture to summarise what its salient features are. I argued at the beginning of this book that the dominant and established approach to American independent cinema in critical and scholarly studies is to categorise it in terms of economic, production and distribution strategies.1 While this is important and useful, this focus on the meaning and context of the very term ‘independent’ has resulted in a paucity of material on the aesthetics and poetics of this kind of cinema and its specific effect or affects. By focusing on the themes of crisis, liminality, transition, mutation and transformation, I have tried to emphasise the ways in which American independent cinema appropriates and transfigures the tropes of European ‘Art’ cinema (as set forth in Gilles Deleuze’s Cinema 2) for its own particular purposes in order to challenge entrenched modes of thought.

On the example of two lakes in the south west of the Tver area, the analysis of hydrological, hydrochemical, hydrobiological characteristics has been carrid out and their production potential estimated. For further fishery use, we recommend to arrange an industrial (cage) farm at the lake Krugloe, and to establish a recreational farm with a cage system at the lake Volkota for commercial cultivation of the Lena sturgeon and sterlet.

Download (2417Kb) | Vorschau Abstract Biofilm-like properties can form on sea surfaces, but an understanding of the underlying processes leading to the development of these biofilms is not available. We used approaches to study the development of biofilm-like properties at the sea surface, i.e. the number, abundance and diversity of bacterial communities and phytoplankton, the accumulation of gel-like particles and dissolved tracers. During the expedition POS537 we used newly developed and free drifting mesocosms and performed incubation experiments. With these approaches we aim to investigate the role of light and UV radiation as well as the microbes themselves, which lead to the formation of biofilms. With unique microbial interactions and photochemical reactions, sea surface biofilms could be biochemical reactors with significant implications for ocean and climate research, e.g. with respect to the marine carbon cycle, diversity of organisms and oceanatmosphere interactions.
