Radioactivity and radioactive radiation are two scientific phenomena which man has always approached with great caution, if not fear. Radioactive radiation cannot be sensed by any of the human senses and experience has proved just how hazardous it can be to the human body. This caution is therefore by no means unfounded and through the years a set of standards has been derived as to what can be regarded as a safe dose to the human body. At the National Accelerator Centre radioisotopes are being produced by a chemical recovery process from targets which have been irradiated by a high energy proton beam. Targets are prepared by compressing salts, containing the elements to become radioisotopes, into tablets. The high energy protons collide with particles in the targets which give off radioactive radiation. The targets in their turn become radioactive and the isotopes that are produced from these targets are radioactive. The level of radioactive radiation is extremely hazardous and it is therefore impossible for any human being to come into close contact with any of the targets or isotopes. It is for these reasons that an electrical rail transport system was installed at the National Accelerator Centre to transport highly radioactive sources. The transport system links the two irradiation vaults to the two rows of hot cells, where the chemical recovery takes place, and to a well shielded storage area for storage of isotopes and radioactive waste. A transport system, performing tasks of this nature, must be, above all, extremely reliable. Secondly, commands entered by an operator to control the system, must be simple and straight forward. This thesis describes the control of the transport system at the National Accelerator Centre, including alI of its features, advantages and disadvantages.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Users are not supposed to modify an operating system kernel, but it is often necessary to add a device driver for a new peripheral device. Device driver development is a difficult and time-consuming process that must be performed by an expert. Drivers are difficult to debug and a malfunctioning driver could cause the operating system to crash. Ways are therefore needed to make the development of device drivers safer and easier. A number of different device driver development methods are examined in this thesis. An existing micro-kernel that supports in-kernel device drivers as well as extensible device drivers has been modified to support user-level and loadable drivers. These extensions ensured that all the development methods were implemented in the same environment and a comparison could thus be made on a fair basis. A comparison of the different methods with respect to the efficiency of the resulting device driver, as well as the ease of the development process, is presented.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Gebruikers is nie veronderstelom aan 'n bedryfstelsel te verander nie, maar tog is dit gereeld nodig om 'n toesteldrywer vir 'n nuwe randapparaat by te voeg. Die ontwikkeling van 'n toesteldrywer is 'n tydrowende en moeilike proses en moet deur 'n kundige aangepak word. Toesteldrywers is moeilik om te ontfout en kan deur verkeerde werking die hele stelsel tot stilstand bring. Daar is dus tegnieke nodig om die ontwikkeling van toestelhanteerders makliker en veiliger te maak. 'n Aantal verskillende ontwikkelingsmetodes vir toesteldrywers word in hierdie tesis ondersoek. 'n Bestaande mikro-kern wat in-kern, sowel as uitbreibare toesteldrywers ondersteun, is aangepas om gebruikersvlak en laaibare toestelhanteerders te ondersteun. Hierdie uitbreiding het verseker dat al die ontwikkelingsmetodes in dieselfde omgewing geïmplementeer is. Dit was dus moontlik om die metodes op 'n regverdige grondslag te vergelyk. Die vergelyking is gedoen ten opsigte van die effektiwiteit van die resulterende toesteldrywer sowel as die moeilikheidsgraad van die ontwikkelingsproses.

This thesis describes the process of writing a software application geared toward developing computer graphics in the Windows environment. The code is written using Visual C++ and the Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC). As an illustration of this process we will walk through the development of a software application. This application will allow a user to create and edit an image composed of simple line graphics and geometric shapes. The user can select drawing colors, select drawing styles, and do area filling. This application also illustrates the use of menus and dialog boxes.

Software metrics have been developed and studied for several years. The idea behind these metrics is to measure software quality and complexity, and based on their results to improve software development. This project implements a tool that parses computer programs written in the Java language and evaluates several software metrics from them.

This tool, called the Super Counter, calculates both object-oriented and non-object-oriented specific metrics. The input for the tool can be one or more Java programs belonging to the same or different packages.

The Super Counter output consists of some general information about the program (number of comments, number of keywords, etc.) as well as more complex metrics: Halstead, McCabe, Chidamber and Kemerer.

This thesis describes the development of a coupled finite element — boundary element program for a microcomputer. The steps outlined in the thesis include the adaptation of a mainframe—based boundary element code for use on a microcomputer, the Verification of this program with sample problems, the development of an algorithm for coupling the Finite Element Method to the Boundary Element Method, the implementation of the coupling algorithm with finite element and boundary element codes, including the development of a Constant Strain Triangular finite element, and the Verification of the coupled program with sample problems. Conclusions are drawn from the results presented, and suggestions are made for future research in this area.

Abstract:

This work extends the area of research termed software metrics by applying measures of system structure and measures of system code to three realistic software products. Previous research in this area has typically been limited to the application of code metrics such as: lines of code, McCabe's Cyclomatic number, and Halstead's software science variables. However, this research also investigates the relationship of four structure metrics: Henry's Information Flow measure, Woodfield's Syntactic Interconnection Model, Yau and Collofello's Stability measure and McClure's Invocation complexity, to various observed measures of complexity such as, ERRORS, CHANGES and CODING TIME. These metrics are referred to as structure measures since they measure control flow and data flow interfaces between system components. Spearman correlations between the metrics revealed that the code metrics were similar measures of system complexity, while the structure metrics were typically measuring different dimensions of software. Furthermore, correlating the metrics to observed measures of complexity indicated that the Information Flow metric and the Invocation Measure typically performed as well as the three code metrics when project factors and subsystem factors were taken into consideration. However, it was generally true that no single metric was able to satisfactorily identify the variations in the data for a single observed measure of complexity. Trends between many of the metrics and the observed data were identified when individual components were grouped together. Code metrics typically formed groups of increasing complexity which corresponded to increases in the mean values of the observed data. The strength of the Information Flow metric and the Invocation measure is their ability to form a group containing highly complex components which was found to be populated by outliers in the observed data.

Abstract:

There are two main purposes to this thesis study. First, we will deploy the principles of software development that we have learned through the Software Engineering track here at NPS and test its validity through the development of a real world system. This system will be a completely self sustaining prototype of a web design containing both the front end and back end requirements. Second, we will conduct a study of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) through the design and usability testing of a new interactive uniform regulations manual. All military services currently possess their own individual uniform regulations specific to each service. This system, although it will be specific to the United States Marine Corps, can be used as a model for any other service as well as any international military desiring a similar solution to the inherent problems associated with current manuals. The new system will address all aspects currently outlined in the regulations. This regulation will be used by all US civilians and military service members to whom the current manual is now relevant. Although we fully intend to deliver a finished product to the Marine Corps for their official use, the true value to us as students is in the process of developing and testing this new system. The knowledge learned here will benefit us in any future system design or development projects.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Formal methods aim to apply the rigour of mathematical logic to the problem ofguaranteeing that the behaviour of (critical) software conforms to predetermined requirements. The application of formal methods during program construction centers around a formal specification of the required behaviour of the program. A development attempt is successful if the resulting program can be formally proven to conform to its specification. For any substantial program, this entails a great deal of effort. Thus, some research efforts have been directed at providing mechanical support for the application of formal methods to software development. E.W. Dijkstra's calculus of weakest precondition predicate transformers [39,38] represents one of the first attempts to use program correctness requirements to guide program development in a formal manner.

Ensuring that predetermined quality standards are met is an issue which software development companies, and the software development industry at large, is having issues in attaining. The software testing process is an important process within the larger software development process, and is done to ensure that software functionality meets user requirements and software defects are detected and fixed prior to users receiving the developed software. Software testing processes have progressed to the point where there are formal processes, dedicated software testing resources and defect management software in use at software development organisations. The research determined implications that the case study software development organisation could face when deviating from software testing processes, with a focus on function performed by the software tester role. The analytical dimensions of duality of structure framework, based on Structuration Theory, was used as a lens to understand and interpret the socio-technical processes associated with software development processes at the case study organisation. Results include the identification of software testing processes, resources and tools, together with the formal software development processes and methodologies being used. Critical e-commerce website functionality and software development resource costs were identified. Tangible and intangible costs which arise due to software defects were also identified. Recommendations include the prioritisation of critical functionality for test execution for the organisation’s e-commerce website platform. The necessary risk management should also be undertaken in scenarios with time constraints on software testing, which balances risk with quality, features, budget and schedule. Numerous process improvements were recommended for the organisation, to assist in preventing deviations from prescribed testing processes. A guideline was developed as a research contribution to illustrate the relationships of the specific research areas and the impact on software project delivery.

Many software organisations using iterative software development approach use practices that relate to quality management. However, the quality management process has been inadequate. Despite many research studies conducted on quality management in iterative software product development none have adequately addressed the challenges and mitigation techniques to have an adequate process that leads to a quality software product. The objective of this study was to determine factors that affect the quality management process in iterative software development. The research followed a qualitative approach, a case of software organisation SasTech in Cape Town, South Africa. 22 interviews were conducted on three roles actively involved in the software product development process. These are product management, quality assurance and software developers. Themes were drawn from results and were tabulated. The duality of technology theory was used as a theoretical lens to data analysis. Several factors were identified to influence the software quality management process. These include planning, documentation, process ownership, technologies, testing, timelines and management support. Abstract:

Web applications have become a large segment of the software development domain but their rapid rise in popularity has far exceeded the support in software engineering. There are many tools and techniques for web application development, but the developer must still learn and use many complex protocols and languages. Products still closely bind data operations, business logic, and the user interface, limiting integration and interoperability. This thesis introduces an innovative new presentation service to help web application developers create better applications faster, and help them build high quality web user interfaces. This service acts as a broker between web browsers and applications, adding value with programming-language independent object-oriented technology. The second innovation is a generic graphics applet (GGA) component for the web browser user interface. This light component provides interactive graphics support for the creation of business charts, maps, diagrams, and other graphical displays in web applications. The combination of a presentation service program (BUS) and the GGA is explored in a series of experiments to evaluate their ability to improve web applications. The experiments provide evidence that the BUS and GGA technology enhances web application designs.

Abstract:

This qualitative study addresses the development process for a text manuscript and storyboard layout used for a multimedia product for undergraduate students and workplace training programs in ethics for hospitality/tourism management. Literature indicates that ethics courses are being offered as part of business curricula and training programs. Literature also shows that hospitality management and training programs are focusing on applications of business ethics in an industry-specific setting. Computer based learning (CBL) and other forms of multimedia are methodologies that educators and trainers in hospitality management are beginning to implement, according to the literature. The dissertation uses needs analysis to collect information from various user groups to determine the feasibility of developing a text script and storyboard for a multimedia production. The needs analysis and literature provide insight concerning the development of content and format for the product. Formative and summative reviews by established colleagues provides further guidance in the development of a final product designed for use by trainers and educators. The process for development and the final product could be useful to subsequent education researchers and designers.

Abstract:

Software development cost estimating models were analyzed using an application of the hedonic pricing approach. Several recently proposed software cost estimating tools were surveyed for the purpose of revealing their roots in the hedonic pricing approach. The analysis includes discussion of the hedonic pricing approach, the logic of several software cost models, and analysis of the models' hedonic pricing traits.

Hedonic prices are the implicit prices of attributes of I differentiated products as revealed in the market through attribute levels associated with market-clearing prices. Several aspects of the software costing models fit within the hedonic pricing approach. Many of the models base cost estimates on the varying quantities of software product attributes (e.g., complexity of program, schedule requirements, etc.). Similarities and differences of traits among cost models were noted.

Abstract:

Creative software design, where there is no theory, no pre-computer precedent, no set of requirements or even necessarily an objective, challenges all existing software development methods. There can be no assumption that end-users know what they want. Each and every situation is unique, unpredictable and due to feedback is continually changing. Fixed solutions developed by non-domain experts are all but impossible in more unconventional systems, and increasingly there may not be domain experts at all. Allowing individuals or groups of non-professionals to program is one approach (End-User Development). However, programming requires a degree of formality, design and specification that cannot co-exist with the most informal pre-theoretical applications which need to be developed by exploratory experimentation to help with problem-solving and sense-making. Instead of programming a finished application from the beginning, there is a need to develop personal, provisional and subjective models and evolve these into public, objective and assured applications. Developing these models \on-line" through interactive experimentation is essential and it is the objective of Empirical Modelling (EM) research to enable the modelling of sense-making artefacts called construals. Whilst existing EM tools are able to support construals there is a need to see how a smooth transition from construals to applications can be made. Such a migration is not one-way as the resulting applications need to remain plastic. The aim of this thesis is to explore and develop ways of enhancing EM principles and tools to better support such migrations from construals to programs. By first identifying key characteristics of construals and associated principles and techniques, along with a critique of the existing EM tool, a new kind of environment for plastic software development is proposed. A major contribution of this thesis is the development of such a prototype environment which is illustrated using a collection of artefacts developed within it. From the prototype, called Cadence, an informal and a formal idealised account was elicited to provide a framework for this kind of development activity. The ideas explored in the thesis have the potential to impact upon the operating systems community and the everyday computer user in radical ways if taken forward. The thesis demonstrates that applications can be developed from construals without a translation step, keeping the resulting applications plastic.

Abstract:

One of the main objectives of software development in scientific computing is efficiency. Being focused on highly specialized application domain, important software quality metrics, e.g., usability, extensibility ,etc may not be amongst the list of primary objectives. In this research, we have studied the design structures and iterative releases of scientific research software using Design Structure Matrix(DSM). We implemented a DSM partitioning algorithm using sparse matrix data structure Compressed Row Storage(CRS), and its timing was better than those obtained from the most widely used C++ library boost. Secondly, we computed several architectural complexity metrics, compared releases and total release costs of a number of open source scientific research software. One of the important finding is the absence of circular dependencies in studied software which attributes to the strong emphasis on computational performance of the code. Iterative release analysis indicates that there might be a correspondence between “clustering co-efficient” and “release rework cost” of the software.
