Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of mission statement contents and its function in guiding employee's behaviour from the organisational culture (OC) perspective. Design/methodology/approach – The research is based on a mixed method approach. The quantitative content analysis of mission statements was performed on a sample of 222 Slovenian companies. Mission statement's keywords were analysed with exploratory factor analysis. Advanced network analytic approaches such as PathFinder algorithm were utilised to obtain better understanding of interrelatedness of underlying mission components. Three interviews with the top managers were performed as well. Findings – The mission statement content analysis identified five associated organisations’ orientations: concern for stakeholders, orientation towards stability, orientation towards cooperation and innovation, and development and growth. The interviews confirm missions’ role in communicating the espoused or declared OC, although different approaches to achieve employees’ commitment to the organisation's mission can be identified in regard to the size of the organisation. Originality/value – The cultural approach to the analysis of mission statements confirms that the mission statements incorporate basic contents of OC. The methodology applied gives new possibilities in the research of OC perspective of strategic statements.

Abstract:
Purpose Mission statements are a key element of any organization. Ideally, the mission statement should be written at the initial stages of an organization’s life to be a useful tool to guide future organization’s decisions and strategy. However, at the early stages of an organization’s life, the organization might still be under development with the objective and stakeholders not yet well-defined, and therefore, stating the mission so early on, might neglect some important elements. In this paper, the authors explore the difference in mission statement quality between missions that have been created at the birth stage of an organization versus missions that are just explicitly formulated once the organization is already well-established and an underlying implicit mission already exists. The authors use as an empirical setting university research parks. Design/methodology/approach The authors evaluate mission statement quality using content analysis. The authors then test the differences on mission statement quality between two groups of research parks, those that have followed a creation strategy versus those that have followed a formulation strategy, using mean of differences test. Findings The authors find that a formulation strategy produces more complete mission statements than the creation strategy. Research parks that have followed a formulation strategy include in their mission statements more references to relevant stakeholders, such as investors, than parks following a creation strategy with respect to their mission statement. Research limitations/implications The research setting is Spanish Science Parks. This research setting is appropriate to answer the research question, as two Park creation strategies, planned and unplanned, allow the researchers to clearly differentiate between two mission conception strategies. However, the sample size is rather small. Practical implications Research has shown that a well-defined mission helps organizations focus and strategy formulation. The authors’ research offers some guidance on how to achieve a high-quality mission statement which will, in turn, help organizations have a better definition of their purpose. Originality/value Research until now has assumed that the mission statement should be formulated at the initial stages of the organization’s life. The authors’ research shows that defining the mission statement later in the process creates higher-quality mission statements that better reflect the organizations purpose and relevant stakeholders.

Abstract:
AbstractA mission statement is a widely used strategic tool that emphasises an organisation’s uniqueness and identity. It was in the early 1980s that academics, managers, and consultants recognised the need for explicitly formulating a mission statement in organisations. Since then, mission statements have remained as a popular strategic tool in organisations. This article conducts a systematic literature review to synthesise research on mission statements. The analysis of the 53 articles selected includes a bibliometric and content analysis. According to their perspective, the works selected were grouped into four thematic areas: (1) mission statement development, (2) mission statement components, (3) mission impact on employees, and (4) mission impact on performance. The overreaching conclusion is that mission statements are widely used in practice but poorly researched in theory. Most articles adopt a managerial phenomenon-based strand, lacking a deep theoretical foundation. The article ends with suggestions for further research in terms of theory, practice, and methodology.

Abstract:
Background: Many studies report the positive effects of outcome-based education in improving medical education quality. An important aspect of outcome-based education is the statement of learning outcomes, which is closely associated with medical schools’ mission, vision, and educational goals. Medical schools’ mission statement not only sets the standards to determine educational goals and outcomes but also provides an indicator to monitor and evaluate medical education quality.Purpose: This study identified a methodology to provide optimal mission statements at medical schools through the framework of suggested decision-making method. Methods: This study analyzed the focus of the mission development suggested by World Federation for Medical Education and Liaison Committee on Medical Education medical education standards and searched for appropriate decision-making methods based on these standards. In addition to validate the suggested framework of mission statement, case analysis of medical schools was conducted. Results: Consequently, a mission development method that applies the mission statement based on stakeholders’ priority (MSSP) was derived. The MSSP involves (1) content analysis, (2) candidate extraction, (3) priority evaluation, and (4) priority validation. The keywords of the mission system derived during this process were categorized and listed in ranks to be suggested as the mission, vision, and core values. The proposed MSSP was applied in two South Korean medical schools and, thereby, the mission, vision, and core values were determined for each medical school. Conclusion: The two schools’ case analysis verified MSSP’s effectiveness as a decision-making methodology to gather and converge diverse opinions from stakeholders for the mission statement at the medical schools.

AbstractEven though mission statements are standard tools in organizations, their effectiveness is subject to substantial skepticism. This review integrates hitherto published research based on a broad range of objective and subjective effectiveness criteria above and beyond financial performance in for-profit as well as not-for-profit organizations. We conclude that the distal outcome effectiveness of mission statements depends on the following antecedents and intermediate outcomes: (1) the rationale underlying their development; (2) the process of their development and implementation; (3) their content and form; and (4) individual attitudes toward the mission statement. We thereby clarify preconditions of mission statement effectiveness in organizations, and reveal shortcomings in current research.

Using a planning process for the Stuttgart Neckar Valley as a case study, this paper analyzes the urban inertial forces that counteract the transformation of energy infrastructure areas in the context of the energy transition. In order to overcome these forces, a scenario-based mission statement was developed in which spatial scenarios were derived from energy scenarios and finally summarized in a concept plan for the Neckar Valley. The mission statement was developed following an analytical-deliberative and transdisciplinary approach. The approach to mission statement development presented here can respond flexibly to changing framework conditions and thus serve as a model for other cities with large-scale energy infrastructures in transition.

Abstract:
Abstract Mission statements have become a popular strategic tool, which increases employee motivation. In SMEs and start-ups, the necessity of mission statements is being questioned as their content can also be communicated by personal leadership. However, especially the participatory development of a mission statement can increase its acceptance and work motivation. Therefore, we pursue an explorative action research approach and developed a mission statement in a workshop with employees of a Berlin-based e-commerce startup. One week before and after the workshop, the employees’ motivation was assessed concerning engagement, satisfaction, commitment and intention to quit. Our results suggest that the participatory development of a mission statement leads to a significant positive effect on work motivation, especially for employees with a low level of motivation.

Miller, Margaret. "An investigation into the impact of mission statements on school development planning." Thesis, Durham University, 2013. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/6944/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis uses quantitative as well as qualitative methods to examine the impact of school philosophical statements on school development planning. Three case study schools from an Asian city were selected. A questionnaire and face to face interviews were used as data gathering tools. The data from the questionnaires informed the questions created for the interviews and the outcomes of these two data sources were analysed qualitatively. As a result of the findings from qualitative analysis a further quantitative analysis was made of the questionnaire data. A total of 188 responses to questionnaires were examined and 22 interviews took place. The main aim of this research is to empirically examine the assumptions that underpin the Council of International Schools and New England Association of Schools and College’s accreditation standards for school philosophical statements and development planning. At the heart of these assumptions is the belief that school development planning is most effective when it is closely linked to a clearly written, collaboratively created set of philosophical statements which articulate the school’s values and beliefs. To date this assumption has not been substantiated by research. A secondary aim is to examine the systems and structures in schools that assist in linking the school’s philosophy to its planning processes. The data resulted in a set of interesting findings. Firstly, insights were gained into techniques used to reaffirm and embed school philosophy into the school’s culture. Secondly, the data suggested that the assumptions made by the accrediting agencies hold true under certain circumstances but that a school’s underlying ideology may be more powerful in driving institutional planning. As a result of the findings, suggestions to further develop accreditation standards are made and ideas for further research are proposed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County is interested in determining the approach that it may take if it decides to pursue conservation and limited development as a strategy to preserve land. In using conservation and limited development, the Conservancy may put into practice its core values by employing this intensely-collaborative conservation tool and informing itself about development, conservation, collaboration and financing, in order to meet multiple community needs. Information about the limited development process was collected from books, news articles and personal communications with professionals to determine its components. Each chapter of this report analyzes one component, putting authors’ strategies into conversation, critiquing these and then offering conservancies several different approaches to accomplish each component. This report concludes that the most important decision that a conservancy must make when pursuing conservation and limited development, is determining the level of involvement appropriate for its conservation mission, resources, expertise, and role in realizing project goals. The final portion of the report provides two case studies that draw upon telephone interviews with professionals, and analyze the contrasting levels of involvement that each project’s conservancy assumed. Since this report was requested by the Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County, it addresses some concerns and realities particular to the county; however, most recommendations are generally applicable to other land conservancies.

Abstract:
Due to the persisting failure of ever continuing reforms driven by politics a new mode of reform has been established during the last decade: Universities are granted higher autonomie with respect to decisionmaking aiming at strengthening their capability of self-organisation. With flexible clauses in new higher education laws the possibility for self-reference has been created - Universities are responsible for themselves. This possibility is nevertheless just one of the required conditions for sucessful self-reference. The second required condition, the ability for self-reference, is not fulfilled automatically by just "loosening the chains". In order to develop this ability Universities have to recognize themselves as embedded in a tight network of relationships and they have to be able to incorporate reciprocal effects between themselves and its environment into their decisionmaking. This case of an organisation being able to reflect on its impact on its environment as well as on the backlashes created by that, can be termed "rational reflexivity" with LUHMANN (1984, p.617). This paper adresses the management instrument of creating mission statements and analyses, how this instrument can contribute to the rational reflexivity of Universities. Using the theory of social systems three conditions are suggested that should be accounted for when aiming to unreveal the potential of the orienting and coordinating management instrument mission statements

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine whether the length and readability of a mission statement contribute to stakeholder behavior regarding the mission statement. The majority of studies in the mission statement literature have not attempted to find an empirical link between mission statement design and employee behavior. This study employed a 2 (length: long v. short) x 2 (readability: low v high) post-test only factorial design to test the relationship between message design and beliefs about the mission statement. Students at a large southeastern university (n=212) were shown the one of four treatments and asked to report their reactions on a brief questionnaire. Results indicated a significant link between readability and beliefs about the functionality of the mission statement. Using the theory of planned behavior, the effects of readability on beliefs about the mission statement were shown to be linked to behavioral intention. The results of this study partially support the relationship between message characteristics of mission statements and the behavioral intention of employees, as well as supporting the TPB model.

Abstract:
It has been long known that quality assurance (QA) is a system to develop quality standards in Thailand. However, it is not easy to implement the concept throughout a whole organization, for example, to include in a university, faculty members, program specifications, management team, and so on. This paper is to explain a case of strategic management of quality assurance using education for sustainable development (ESD) in the university with social enterprise concept. An example of the university with the mission statement of “to serve society” can drawn more attention using ESD concept to faculty in stead of QA regulation concept. The conceptual framework of the implementation was shown how QA can be developed in curriculum embedding with an ESD concept.

Abstract:
The product concept phase of the product innovation process is a creative and interdisciplinary activity that transforms a market opportunity and technological innovation into successful products. It is a set of activity based processes in a product-oriented enterprise, and is essential to the economics success of such organization. Well-designed processes reduce development time, create better products, generate profit, and increase market share. In contrast, poorly-designed processes can harm both product lines and the companies that manufacture them. Determining important methods in the product concept phase and determining their relationship with organizational capability are crucial to the sustainable success in product development. Studying their relationship would give us insights into the product development dynamics. This paper will focus on the development of an engineering management model for the product conceptual phase of the product Innovation process. The (PCP) begins with the scope of the project having been formalized by either a request for proposal from an external entity or an internally generated mission statement. This document will specify a particular market opportunity and lay out the broad constraints of the project. Basically it will specify which direction to go, and will generally specify a precise destination or a particular way to get there. During the product concept phase, customer needs are identified, multiple product concepts are generated based on these needs, and a single product concept is selected for further development after a thorough evaluation has been accomplished. A well thought-out product concept will consist of a description of the form, function, and features of the product as well as a set of specifications, an analysis of competitive products, and an economic justification for the project. The aim of this paper to determine the most effective methods, tools and techniques to design a theoretical product concept phase (PCP) model, which consists of four activity elements or modules. The model highlights the iterative series of activities that may take anywhere from a few seconds in the minds of individuals to many months or years for defining a breakthrough concept. The product concept phase (PCP) model will be created during the problem definition activity very early in the product development process. The PCP module will be organized in a way that requires participation by virtually all the major product development functions within the organization such as marketing, technology, product design and manufacturing. It also involves interactions with stakeholders such as customers, suppliers that are outside of the organization. The interface of the PCP module to other product innovation process phases will be achieved through the design of an IT - Platform; that includes all the needs and requirements for and form other phases.
