This thesis uses quantitative as well as qualitative methods to examine the impact of school philosophical statements on school development planning. Three case study schools from an Asian city were selected. A questionnaire and face to face interviews were used as data gathering tools. The data from the questionnaires informed the questions created for the interviews and the outcomes of these two data sources were analysed qualitatively. As a result of the findings from qualitative analysis a further quantitative analysis was made of the questionnaire data. A total of 188 responses to questionnaires were examined and 22 interviews took place. The main aim of this research is to empirically examine the assumptions that underpin the Council of International Schools and New England Association of Schools and College’s accreditation standards for school philosophical statements and development planning. At the heart of these assumptions is the belief that school development planning is most effective when it is closely linked to a clearly written, collaboratively created set of philosophical statements which articulate the school’s values and beliefs. To date this assumption has not been substantiated by research. A secondary aim is to examine the systems and structures in schools that assist in linking the school’s philosophy to its planning processes. The data resulted in a set of interesting findings. Firstly, insights were gained into techniques used to reaffirm and embed school philosophy into the school’s culture. Secondly, the data suggested that the assumptions made by the accrediting agencies hold true under certain circumstances but that a school’s underlying ideology may be more powerful in driving institutional planning. As a result of the findings, suggestions to further develop accreditation standards are made and ideas for further research are proposed.

Den här studien undersöker förhållandena för att inkludera bloggar i svenska folkbibliotekens kataloger. Varför förvärvas bloggar som blivit böcker, men inte bloggarna själva? Studien söker förståelse för och diskuterar de hinder och möjligheter som påverkar en inkludering av bloggar i katalogerna. Den teoretiska basen består av ett postmodernt perspektiv på biblioteken, och en jämförelse mellan olika sätt att se på folkbibliotekens uppdrag. Studien använder en blandad metod och kombinerar djupare intervjuer för att få insikt i folkbiblioteken, med en enkätstudie riktad till svenska folkbibliotekarier. Frågorna handlade om attityder gentemot bibliotekens uppdrag, bloggen som medieformat, och hur en inkludering av bloggar i bibliotekskatalogen skulle påverka biblioteket idag och i framtiden. Studien fann att bloggens materialitet medför hinder som behöver överbryggas för att en inkludering ska vara möjlig, och uppdragen folkbibliotekarierna håller viktiga gynnar en inkludering av bloggar.

The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County is interested in determining the approach that it may take if it decides to pursue conservation and limited development as a strategy to preserve land. In using conservation and limited development, the Conservancy may put into practice its core values by employing this intensely-collaborative conservation tool and informing itself about development, conservation, collaboration and financing, in order to meet multiple community needs.
Information about the limited development process was collected from books, news articles and personal communications with professionals to determine its components. Each chapter of this report analyzes one component, putting authors’ strategies into conversation, critiquing these and then offering conservancies several different approaches to accomplish each component. This report concludes that the most important decision that a conservancy must make when pursuing conservation and limited development, is determining the level of involvement appropriate for its conservation mission, resources, expertise, and role in realizing project goals. The final portion of the report provides two case studies that draw upon telephone interviews with professionals, and analyze the contrasting levels of involvement that each project’s conservancy assumed. Since this report was requested by the Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County, it addresses some concerns and realities particular to the county; however, most recommendations are generally applicable to other land conservancies.

Der anhaltende Misserfolg des politikgetriebenen Reformstakkatos verstärkt seit einer Dekade die Tendenz zu einem Reformmodus, der Universitäten höhere Autonomie zuspricht und auf deren Selbstorganisation gegen die teilweise dramatisch diskutierte Entfremdung von der Gesellschaft setzt. Mit Experimentierklauseln oder gar Hochschulfreiheitsgesetzen wird die Möglichkeit zur Selbstreferenz geschaffen – die Universität ist fortan für sich selbst verantwortlich. Diese Möglichkeit ist gleichwohl nur eine der notwendigen Bedingungen für erfolgreiche Selbstreferenz. Die Fähigkeit dazu liefert die „Entfesselung“ nicht. Dazu muss sich die Universität eingebettet in die sie umfassenden Zusammenhänge begreifen und mögliche Wechselwirkungen zwischen Organisation und Umwelt berücksichtigen können. Diesen voraussetzungsvollen Fall, dass eine Organisation die Auswirkungen ihrer Operationen auf ihre Umwelt sowie daraus entstehende Rückwirkungen auf sich selbst reflektiert, kann mit LUHMANN (1984, S.617) rationale Selbstreflexion genannt werden. Die Arbeit widmet sich dem Managementinstrument der Leitbildentwicklung und untersucht, wie es zur rationalen Selbstreflexion der Universität beitragen kann. Mit der Perspektive der Theorie sozialer Systeme werden drei Bedingungen herausgearbeitet, die im Prozess der Leitbildentwicklung zu berücksichtigen sind, um das orientierende und koordinierende Nutzenpotential dieses Managementinstruments zu entfaltenDue to the persisting failure of ever continuing reforms driven by politics a new mode of reform has been established during the last decade: Universities are granted higher autonomie with respect to decisionmaking aiming at strengthening their capability of self-organisation. With flexible clauses in new higher education laws the possibility for self-reference has been created - Universities are responsible for themselves. This possibility is nevertheless just one of the required conditions for sucessful self-reference. The second required condition, the ability for self-reference, is not fulfilled automatically by just "loosening the chains". In order to develop this ability Universities have to recognize themselves as embedded in a tight network of relationships and they have to be able to incorporate reciprocal effects between themselves and its environment into their decisionmaking. This case of an organisation being able to reflect on its impact on its environment as well as on the backlashes created by that, can be termed "rational reflexivity" with LUHMANN (1984, p.617). This paper adresses the management instrument of creating mission statements and analyses, how this instrument can contribute to the rational reflexivity of Universities. Using the theory of social systems three conditions are suggested that should be accounted for when aiming to unreveal the potential of the orienting and coordinating management instrument mission statements

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the length and readability of a mission statement contribute to stakeholder behavior regarding the mission statement. The majority of studies in the mission statement literature have not attempted to find an empirical link between mission statement design and employee behavior. This study employed a 2 (length: long v. short) x 2 (readability: low v high) post-test only factorial design to test the relationship between message design and beliefs about the mission statement. Students at a large southeastern university (n=212) were shown the one of four treatments and asked to report their reactions on a brief questionnaire. Results indicated a significant link between readability and beliefs about the functionality of the mission statement. Using the theory of planned behavior, the effects of readability on beliefs about the mission statement were shown to be linked to behavioral intention. The results of this study partially support the relationship between message characteristics of mission statements and the behavioral intention of employees, as well as supporting the TPB model.

Many new institutions struggle with issues of identity and purpose, which can create instability and lack of growth. Mission statements are often used to clearly identify the characteristics that make an organization unique. This study was informed by theories of organizational management, art integration constructivism, and Bronfenbrenner's cultural ecology. The literature indicates that there is a strong connection between a clear and concise mission statement and the organization's behaviors. This study examined a small Southeast Michigan charter school devoted to integrating arts and academic curricula to determine how the stated mission was understood and implemented by its stakeholders. An applied, mixed methodology design was used to investigate the connection between the stated mission and the actions of the school's stakeholders. A 4-point, Likert type, quantitative survey was administered to 40 teachers, administrators, and board members and descriptive statistics were used to analyze the summative data. The analysis examined coded themes and found inconsistencies in the knowledge base of the school's stakeholders, primarily related to a lack of shared understandings of organizational statements and arts integration. The study recommendations include a guide for a staff introduction to ongoing pragmatic action research as a method to investigate and implement possible resolutions to the stated problem. The action research would help the school meet its stated goals of providing a coherent, arts-integrated learning experience for the school's students. The study and recommendations will lead to positive social change in that a coherent, arts-integrated education has been shown to provide an educationally and socially beneficial learning environment for the individuals involved in the program.

In this case study, the author explores the nonprofit mission statement as a genre, its place within a genre ecology, and its communication through various genres. Theorizing the mission statement as a controlling and stabilizing force in a genre ecology, the author notes the potential of the mission statement to enact the genre function, "the authority a genre has even in the absence of its author. Noting the limitations of current genre ecology modeling (GEM), the author maps the genres, documents, and activities of a small community foundation using a revised form of GEM that more purposefully includes speech genres to map relationships; in this case study, the speech genres revealed how the mission statement is mediated through genres and activities. Further, observations and interviews revealed ideological conflicts of the organization's key stakeholders that resulted in clashes between key stakeholder values and the language of the nonprofit's mission (and other genres). Additionally, ideological consensus resulted in the addition of new organizational activities and genres, even though these activities are not in line with the language of the mission statement as written. Eventually, these activities become social facts, "ideas that the key stakeholders believe are in line with the mission when they are, in fact, in conflict with it. If these social facts are not re-aligned with the mission statement, new activities and genres are created and mediated by speech genres, potentially moving the organization further away from its purpose and goals. The author ultimately suggests a cycle of genre and activity production that will realign the social facts and the mission statement and encourage organizational leaders to return to the mission statement and change the language to reflect the organization's new reality.Ph. Mission statement is important to companies, especially as a strategic communication tool with stakeholders. Innovation is also important to companies and has its implications on performance. This study examines the relationship between financial performance and explicitly communicating innovation in mission statement. The study uses a quantitative approach with logistic regression to test empirical hypotheses related to revenues, profits, change in assets and market value, and their relationship with explicitly communicating innovation in mission statements. The conclusion is that among all the financial performance indicators considered, only market value represents a strong and significant result, indicating a positive relationship with explicitly communicating innovation.

The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of a university's faculty as to how the strategies, staffing policies, and systems procedures were aligned with the mission statement. Differences in perceptions were examined by college affiliation, rank, primary teaching assignment and gender. Data were analyzed to determine if there were correlations between faculty members' perceptions of alignment of the university's mission statement with administration's actions, policies, and procedures and their level of organizational commitment, job satisfaction, and overall satisfaction with their job and the organization The population for this study was comprised initially of 1363 teaching faculty members of the University of Central with more than one year of service and reduced to 1285 who were determined to meet the criteria for inclusion. The 67-item survey instrument used in this study was developed and copyrighted by Dr. Robert C. Ford (Ford et al, 2006), and was administered during January and February 2006 A total of 297 usable responses (23.1%) were returned. An analysis of all responses indicated that there was a wide disparity in perceptions and that respondents did not believe that there was a strong alignment of mission with administrative practices, policies, and procedures. This confirmed an earlier finding as to the importance of perception (Dickson, Ford, & Upchurch, 2006, Ford et al., 2006). Significant differences in faculty perceptions by college affiliation, university rank, and primary teaching assignment were identified. Significant differences based on gender were minimal. The correlations of items representing level of organizational commitment were highly correlated. Items representing job satisfaction and overall satisfaction with their job and the organization were moderately intercorrelated, and the interrelationship was not strong.Ed.D.

The following research project seeks to answer the question: “To what extent can differences among juvenile detention centers be explained on the basis of concepts of restorative and retributive justice?” To investigate, mission statements were collected from a national sample of Juvenile Detention Centers. A semantic network analysis was performed to answer the above research question. The computer program CATPAC was used to create 2-d images of the semantic analysis. From these images eight themes emerged through clusters: institutional identity, public safety, life skill values, family and child tie, and community and family tie, support from staff, support from environment, and support from environment and staff. These themes were reflective of retributive or restorative orientation. Results indicate that male public institutions are reflective of retributive justice while female public, male private, and female private institutions are more reflective of restorative justice. These findings suggest biases and treatment patterns within the juvenile justice system.

This report will design a mission and spacecraft to redirect the first Near-Earth Object (NEO) to a stable orbit in the Earth-Moon system. The mission profile includes a soon-as-possible launch, spiral-out escape from the Earth-Moon system, rendezvous, ion beam redirection method, and decommissioning phases, each with accompanying orbital dynamics code written in Matlab. The spacecraft design will include power and mass budgets for each of the subsystems including power, thermal, communications, GNC, fuel, and thrusters. The orbital dynamics code is detailed in the final section of the report.

This thesis is an ethnographic exploration of the mission place, and the imagined spaces within it that are occupied by women. Based on 21 months of fieldwork in a former mission station located in north-west Uganda, this analysis draws upon geographies of space, development, resistance and of gender and sexuality. Elements of feminist and radical theologies, which frame mission discourse for women are woven into my reflections on women's imagined spaces. A central tenet of the research has been the methodological strategy employed to explore the mission place. By living and working as a foreign lay missionary volunteer, I was integrated in the cross-cultural context of church and aid, while focusing my ethnographic attention on women's lives there. I address issues of ethical concern embodied in this research. This thesis therefore argues for a more nuanced appreciation of the contradictions and choices that characterize women's lives in mission places. Such an appreciation is grounded in the issue of 'accountability' that accompanies the donation of external aid to the mission place. Particular roles have been created for women (and men) within the mission place, which assume certain behaviours and characteristics, and which are often connected to the implementation of development initiatives in that place. Since the construction of these missionary spaces has misinterpreted the sexual role that these women continue to express, their negotiation of compromised and liminal gender roles with sexual dimensions often impinges upon the responsibilities that attend to their imagined missionary space. This results in compromised management of the development initiatives in which they are involved.

This study seeks to answer a fundamental question facing missiologists and historians of Mormonism: given their sustained preoccupation with converting others to Mormonism and their thriving tradition of missionary work, how do Mormons conceive of their mission? By focusing on the theoretical frame in which Mormon missionaries imagined the non-Mormon world, prepared for missionary engagement, and derived their expectations for their mission work, this study aims to illuminate the development of Mormon missionary activities and explain the processes by which Mormons fashioned for themselves a missional character. Beginning with Joseph Smith and the emergence of his missional thought and ending with the institutional shifts of the Mormon Church toward mission programs, this thesis attempts to map the general arc of Mormon mission theory as it developed within the context of early American religious history.

This thesis describes the design and implementation of compact high voltage drive electronics for a multi-actuator microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) based deformable mirror (DM) for the 6U CubeSat Deformable Mirror Demonstration Mission (DeMi) with the objective of increasing the NASA Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of the MEMS DM toward its use for direct exoplanet imaging on a future large aperture space telescope mission. This thesis outlines the key requirements for DM performance, successfully develops a commercial-component based DM drive electronics board for a 140-actuator MEMS DM that is scalable to higher actuator count DMs, discusses the attributes of alternative designs in the initial trade study that were not further pursued, and summarizes the plan toward fully integrating and testing the MEMS DM drive electronics into the optical payload.

This dissertation examines the religious, social, political and economic impact of Lubwa Mission of the Livingstonia Mission of the (United Free) Church of Scotland, The Livingstonia Mission stressed the education of Africans in practical skills and in particular qualities which were consonant with the Calvinistic ethic. The provision of education was a major method of evangelization. Lubwa Mission used a different model of evangelization from the rival Roman-Catholic White Fathers' Mission. For Livingstonia salvation was through individual faith in Christ; for the White Fathers the Sacraments, especially baptism, led to salvation. Lubwa Mission used literacy and intellectual agreement with the contents of the catechism as criteria for admission to church membership. New members were incorporated into the structure of the Mission as teachers, evangelists, catechists, or paid employees of the Mission. The converts were initially mainly young men, exhibiting a westernized style of life (use of language, food habits, clothing, house building, hygiene, child-rearing, relationship with their spouses). The period following the First World War saw the rapid expansion of the Mission, stimulated by an increased rivalry with the White Fathers Mission in the area of education. It led to rifts between families and clans and within families. The basic unity of the village, based on the kinship structure, was broken. Existing rifts were strengthened. It was a small elite of teachers and evangelists which tried to implement the demands of the Gospel in their daily lives and that of their families. In the 1940s Lubwa missionaries came under criticism by young mission teachers, who established a Chinsali Branch of the Northern Rhodesia African National Congress at Lubwa. Lubwa 'graduates' opposed plans to amalgamate or federate the Rhodesias. They used the structures of the Chuxch to politicize the district. In 1955 Lubwa was confronted with a break-away movement, the Lumpa Church, led by Alice Lenshina. Lubwa tried to meet this challenge by trying to transform the heavily institutionalized church, with paid offices, into a movement based on voluntary work. The establishment of a strong women's organization, the KBBK, helped to achieve this goal by the late 1960s. By 1967 Lubwa Church had been fully Africanised. It had also relinquished its role in health care and education.

Thomas Jefferson envisioned a symbiotic relationship between democracy and public education because he considered educated citizens to be the critical ingredient of a successful democracy. Nevertheless, political and educational reforms over the past two centuries have not always been kind to the relationship that Jefferson envisioned. This study examines frequency that postsecondary education institutions declare a democratic social purpose in their mission statements. The DSP definition, data instrumentation, and theoretical lens for this study were situated from the Jeffersonian perspective.
Although the primary concern for this study was publicly funded/subsidized postsecondary education, recent enrollment growth in private education and privatization initiatives, such as voucher programs, justifies comparison with private nonprofit and private for-profit institutions to reveal how the different types of institutional control influence DSP. The comparison also provides a sense of the non-economic consequences of reduced public education subsidy and intentional or unintentional privatization. A number of Carnegie classification variables were also examined to better understand what factors influence DSP expression.
This study utilized a national random sample of undergraduate institutions, from associates colleges to research universities. The sample size was 336 and there were no cases of missing data. Interrater reliability was calculated as .873 Kappa on the dichotomous dependent variable (DSP presence or absence).
The first research objective was to determine if public, private nonprofit, and private for-profit institutional mission statements differ in the frequency of DSP expression. Public institutions exhibited 36.5% DSP, private nonprofit institutions exhibited 69.1% DSP, and private for-profit institutions exhibited 11.9% DSP. Chi-square test determined that there was significant difference between each of 2x2 comparisons (p < .003). The second research objective utilized logistic regression analysis to gauge the influence of several variables on DSP frequency. Institutional control, focus, enrollment, and mission statement length were found to be significant at the p = .05 level.
There are differences between public and private institutions and also between two-year and four-year institutions in the frequency of DSP expression. These differences have serious social and political implications that will likely go unnoticed as the bulk of society focuses on private and economic concerns.

This thesis explores the development of missionary infrastructure in the Canadian north between approximately 1850 and 1915 and its impact on the evangelization of northern indigenous people by missionary organizations. Focussing on two groups of missionaries - the Catholic Oblates of Mary Immaculate and the Anglican Church Missionary Society - this thesis demonstrates how missionaries used buildings to develop a programme for evangelization based on the convert and civilize model prevalent in nineteenth-century global missions. It argues that the intent was to convert indigenous people to Christianity and to enact significant changes on their traditional way of life, including their economy and social structure. Within this programme, architectural spaces, specifically the mission station, were used as a frontier location where indigenous people and missionaries interacted, providing a location for missionary teaching, a didactic place to demonstrate how Christians lived, and a method of transforming what was viewed as a non-Christian wilderness into a Christian 'garden' through construction of buildings and control of the natural world. While these ideas were applied to diverse locations throughout the global mission field in the early modern period of missionary activity, the Canadian north presents a unique area of study for this topic because of the relative lack of pre-existing non-indigenous development in the region, the difficulties in building resulting from its environment, and the romantic approach that missionaries took to it as the frontier of European and Christian activity - in biblical terms, the 'uttermost ends of the earth'. Within this context, the use of architecture as part of a missionary programme of conversion and civilization became extremely important as a tool for the transformation of the land and its people to a Christian ideal rooted in European precedent. This proved problematic because of the inherent difficulties in evangelization in this geographic region. As a result, this thesis demonstrates how missionaries applied architecture within the mission station as a tool for evangelization in this region, taking into consideration both the way in which they perceived the territory and the realities they faced on the ground. It reveals how these missionaries created a unique set of architectures that responded to how missionaries understood building function within the missionary environment, as well as what was actually achievable in the northern mission field.

The objective of this project is the development of a mission analysis tool for the nanosatellite company GomSpace Sweden. Although there are many existing software, they can be quite complicated and time consuming to use. The goal of this work is to build a simple app to be used at the earliest stages of space missions in order to obtain key figures of merit quickly and easily. By comparing results, assessing the feasibility of customer needs, analysing how various parameters affect each other, it enables immediate deeper understanding of the implications of the main design decisions that are taken at the very beginning of a mission. The tool shall aid the system engineering process of determining orbit manoeuvre capability specifically for CubeSat electric propulsion systems taking into account the most relevant factors for perturbation in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), i.e. atmospheric drag and Earth’s oblateness effects. The manoeuvres investigated are: orbit raising from an insert orbit to an operating orbit, orbit maintenance, deorbiting within the space debris mitigation guidelines and collision avoidance within the 12 to 24 hours that the system has to react. The manoeuvres cost is assessed in terms of Delta v requirements, propellant mass and transfer times. The tool was developed with MATLAB and packaged as a standalone Linux application.Målet med detta examensarbete var att utveckla ett verktyg för missionsanalys för nanosatellitföretaget GomSpace Sweden. Det finns många andra mjukvaror för att nå samma mål men de är ofta komplicerade och tidskrävande. Det specifika målet var således att skapa en enkel applikation som kan användas i de tidiga stegen av utformning av rymduppdrag för att snabbt och enkelt få fram viktiga parametrar. Genom att jämföra resultat, uppskatta genomförbarheten av kundbehov och analysera hur olika parametrar påverkar varandra kan omedelbar förståelse erhållas rörande påverkan av designbeslut som tas i början av rymduppdragen. Verktyget ska stödja systemingenjörsprocessen genom att uppskatta banförflyttningskapacitet för elektriska framdrivningssystem för CubeSats och ta i beaktande de mest relevanta faktorerna gällande störningar i låg jordbana (LEO), i.e. atmosfäriskt motstånd och effekterna av Jordens form. De undersökta manövrarna är: banhöjning från injektionsbana till operationell bana, banunderhåll, bansänkning som följer riktlinjerna för rymdskrot och kollisionsundvikande inom de 12 till 24 timmar som systemet har på sig att reagera. Objective: The study investigated the relationship between mission and development in the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) in Ghana and applied sustainable approaches making impactful contributions reflective of mission and global development concepts. Necessitated by majority of Charismatic churches inability to prosecute sustainable, impactful national mission and development activities that improves people’s lives; except few Churches in four decades after their emergence since 1979, the study asked: What factors facilitated the emergence of Charismatic churches? What mission approach accounted for sustainable, impactful national mission? What accounted for sustainable development activities relative to SDGs, and participants’ human and socio-economic well-being?
Population: The International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) was purposefully sampled from Charismatic churches in Ghana for the national character and scope of her mission and human development activities. The Clergy, members and non-members of (ICGC) associated with above mentioned programmes were sampled purposefully for interrogation.
Method: The qualitative ‘case study’ research design was employed for in-depth information. Both primary and secondary data were employed. Primary data on “opinions and views” were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews of key respondents, focused group discussants and participatory observation. Inductive data analysis was employed to analyze the data.
Findings: Analysis of responses show the existence of relationship between mission and development in the Charismatic church in Ghana and applied sustainable approaches, reflecting mission and development concepts, making impactful national mission and human development contributions. It also established correlation between the mission and socio-economic challenges of the 1970s and 1980s in sub-Saharan Africa and the emergence of Charismatic churches in Ghana.
Conclusion: Based on findings, I conclude that “God centered” and “members centered” approaches help ensure sustainable mission with national spread reflective of mission Dei, mission ecclesiae and Henry Venn’s indigenous Church concept. And that human development initiative combined with elimination of anti-sustainable issues, occasion sustainable development, reflective of SDGs Agenda 2030.
Application: Findings will enable smaller and stagnant churches adopt above approaches to facilitate sustainable mission and development activities for growth and improvement of followers’ holistic human development and well-being.Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2020.

Autonomous systems are becoming increasingly commonplace, with applications either existing or suggested in many different industries. As levels of autonomy increase, the need for these systems to interpret with environments in which they operating and make decisions about their own future actions following internal failures or external threats. In the past, reliability analysis methods have been suggested as having the potential to provide information that could be used in a real-time decision support tool for autonomous systems in changing environments. Real-time support is particularly important in systems such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), where any delay in making a decision following a failure occurrence or the emergence of a threat could be catastrophic. Reliability Analysis can be used to calculate the failure probability of a mission such as that performed by a UAV by modelling the mission as a sequence of tasks known as a phased mission. Binary Decision Diagram models have shown great potential for analysing phased mission systems since they can produce accurate mission and phase failure probabilities in reasonably short time frames. Although research to date has shown that Binary Decision Diagrams appear to have the most promise for performing the real-time analysis that would be required as an input to a decision making tool for phased mission systems, the analysis as it stands still falls some way short of being near-instant, as it must be for decisions to be made quickly when required. In common with many systems, phased mission systems can contain components that fail in multiple failure modes. It is therefore important that multiple failure modes are modelled while developing the Binary Decision Diagram tools and techniques considered in this research. The research presented in this thesis aims to address the deficiencies seen in previous methods by investigating the Binary Decision Diagram techniques and suggesting how the techniques can be developed for use within a decision support tool where fast, accurate decision making is required. The novelty of the research is as follows: 1. Different Binary Decision Diagram models for phased mission systems are reviewed and three new Binary Decision Diagram models are proposed to improve the efficiency and accuracy of analysis for phased mission systems containing multiple failure mode components. 2. Since the size of a Binary Decision Diagram has a significant effect on the time required to quantify it and the Binary Decision Diagram size is influenced by variable ordering, nine different variable ordering schemes are investigated for phased mission systems. Eight of them are extended from fault tree analysis of single phase systems containing single failure mode components and one is newly-developed specially for use within a decision support tool. 3. Due to the potential time limitation for decision making, approximation methods are investigated to evaluate the failure probabilities in phased mission systems while trading off between accuracy and analysis efficiency. Three new approximation models are developed and their analysis efficiency advantage over the exact analysis is demonstrated testing on a large number of sample phased mission systems. A performance indicator is developed in order to facilitate the choice of approximation method taking into account accuracy and efficiency requirements. The benefits of the developed methods are demonstrated through the consideration of a case study.

The thesis investigates the phenomenon of items affecting comparability and its development in 30 Swedish companies during the period 2005-2010. It further tries to answer the question of how these items affect different groups of financial statements users. Previous research indicates that managers have incentives to take a “big bath” during crises. To answer the questions both a quantitative research by examining 180 annual reports and a qualitative containing three interviews has been conducted. The result reveals an increase of reported items affecting comparability costs during 2008 and 2009. Managers engage in “big bath” accounting as well as accounting for cutting down on the extra capacity that emerges during recessions. The impact this has on the users of financial statements varies, where some find it to be an important issue, others see it as a minor problem. The small sample used made the study fragile for extreme values. In order to make more conclusive conclusions a larger sample would be necessary.

A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Education in fulfillment of the requirements of the Degree of Doctor Of Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instructional Studies at the University of Zululand, 2018The Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) was adopted based on the principles of the Revised National Curriculum Statement (RNCS) to improve the quality of education in both rural and urban areas since the change-over from apartheid education in 1994. The new curriculum was also introduced in order to shift from content to outcomes-based education which experienced marked implementation challenges. The main aim of this study was to investigate challenges facing educators in schools in the rural areas in the implementation of CAPS and develop a support programme for them to promote the quality of teaching and learning in these rural schools. This quantitative study used simple random sampling using a self-administered questionnaire to collect data from five hundred rural based educators. The instrument was shaped and enriched by consulting a wide range of literature on the subject to ensure its validity. Quantitative data was analysed using Statistical Package for Social Science 18 (SPSS 18) and Chi- square statistics. Results established challenges that educators are facing through lack of support programmes in the process of implementing CAPS in rural schools. It was also revealed that the majority of rural educators are not effective in implementing CAPS as they are not given support programmes. The findings of this study should assist in developing a support programme for rural based educators towards implementing the Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement in a manner that it would promote quality teaching and learning. The study concludes that rural educators need to be supported for the implementation of Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement. The study recommends the implementation of the support programme to rural educators for the effective implementation of CAPS. Further research into the development of support programme in South African rural educators should be undertaken.

The International Space Station provides a high-quality of microgravity and extended exposure time which makes it a platform of choice for microgravity research. In order to increase accessibility of onboard experimentation, Space Applications Services will soon launch the ICE Cubes facility as part of its ICE Cubes Service. The facility is foreseen to host standardized plug-and-play payload cubes to reduce overall cost and procedure time required to install payloads on the station. To remotely support the facility it is decided to develop a utility cube named Cube-Zero that will be launched and installed with the facility on the station. This thesis work included the complete design, development and documentation of the cube. The thesis started by conducting a preliminary needs and market study from which two specific purposes were defined for the cube. In addition to its original function of support-utility, the cube is tasked to be a technical commercial demonstrator for the service. This led to the conceptual design of the cube as a multidisciplinary framework able to host two user-defined experiment modules. The preliminary concept was further refined in this paper and with support of prototypes, simulations and analyses led to a final functional design for the Cube-Zero. The work is concluded with the manufacturing of an engineering model of the cube. The model is fully operational, can support the test of the facility before launch and can demonstrate to users its versatility and ease of use in operating any kind of experiment module. Eventually, the information gathered in this thesis report will support future users into developing their own Cube-Zero payload module and guide Space Applications Services into manufacturing, testing and operating the Cube-Zero protoflight model.ICE Cubes

The development, testing, and results of a software suite for automated development of spacecraft requirements is discussed. This software suite will enable mission scientists and engineers to rapidly develop spacecraft requirements from a previously-developed set of mission requirements. The software, written in MATLAB, is controlled by a Master Controller script, whose purpose is to accept inputs from the user and call subfunctions responsible for designing the various spacecraft subsystem requirements. The software was tested through the use of a series of arbitrarily-generated mission requirements, with the test results being examined for potential feasibility and reasonableness. Case studies are examined which show the efficacy of the software suite to accurately generate spacecraft requirements. The first case study examines a set of software-developed spacecraft requirements intended to meet the mission requirements of the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The second case study examines a set of infeasible mission requirements to the planet Uranus, in an effort to demonstrate that the software will generate realistic, but infeasible, spacecraft requirements when the mission requirements are themselves infeasible. Both case studies generate reasonable spacecraft requirements as expected, with the direct comparison between the Mars spacecraft resulting in very similar preliminary spacecraft designs. This software suite will enable spacecraft scientists and engineers to quickly assess the feasibility of mission concepts and proposal designs through rapid development of spacecraft requirements.
