Wang, Mei. "Cultivating the 'generic solution' : the emergence of a Chinese product data management (PDM) software package." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/2023.

Full text
Abstract:
This is a study of the design and development of an Organisational Software Package (OSP). It particularly focuses on the ambitions and supplier strategy of building a ‘generic software solution’ (i.e., a software system that in principle can be used by everyone). The study is located in the distinctive context provided by China, with its particular history and in a period of rapid economic reform. The starting point of this research is the apparent empirical and theoretical gap in the social study of Organisational Software Packages, in which the construction of standard solutions and the supply side of the technology's story have been largely overlooked. Moving beyond conventional information system design perspectives, this thesis draws upon concepts developed within the Social Shaping of Technology (SST) perspective, adopting an interdisciplinary approach to analyse the creation and evolution of OSPs, which enables us to address both the dynamism and continuity of these developments. In order to avoid the shortcomings of snapshot studies, we applied the concepts of ‘social learning’ and in particular the ‘biography’ of software package to examine the evolution of the OSP supply as the supplier developed its product and market strategy over a number of product cycles. Lastly, we applied Rip’s (Rip and Kemp 1998) technological transitional model to explore the influence of both the broad socio-economic context and institutional arrangements on the OSPs' development, as well as the contribution of these and related changes to changing the setting of technology. Methodologically, an extremely detailed longitudinal and contextual analysis has been undertaken through a qualitative historical case study of the evolution of a Chinese software package from 1998- 2005 in the context of China, triangulating different methods: interviewing, document analysis and participant observation. The empirical findings of this study firstly show that achieving the ‘generic’ is not an impossible goal but is rather an evolutionary process which is filled with struggles and tensions. OSP suppliers are forced to maintain a strategic balance between a range of contextual factors with technical, financial and social dimensions. Secondly, and perhaps the key contribution of this study, is the complex multi-locus and multi-layered account it offers of the OSP innovation process, according to which the supplier learns about the representation of users and use in both ‘local’ and ‘community design’ spaces with different approaches and foci through interaction with user organisations and other social players. The findings show that OSP suppliers are required to readjust their relationships with user organisations and establish cycles that move between seeking to achieve the economic imperative through standardisation and seeking to accommodate local user requirements. Thirdly, while this empirical study confirms some observations that have been made about packaged OSP production in western countries, it also reveals some specifically Chinese characters. These particular features of the development process which were identified in the Chinese PDM development were framed (using the terminology of Rip’s transitional model) by the unstable landscape and socio-technical regimes. Finally, this case study also throws light on the applicability of SST in developing countries and on the policy and practice of China’s future technology development.

Du, Jia-Zheng. "Methods and software development for sectional and topological optimization of frame structures." Reims, 2004. http://theses.univ-reims.fr/exl-doc/GED00000024.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
To satisfy the requirement on computation and optimization of frame structures in the engineering field, some sectional and topological optimization methods of frame structures are studied and a relevant software based on the present study is developed using the MSC/Patran&Nastran software as platform. Combining the optimality criteria method and the mathematical programming method, several methods are adopted to deal with the constraints with different properties. The original sectional optimization model is transformed into a dual problem according to the dual theory in order to reduce the number of the design variables so speed up the resolution. The methods of Approximate Scaling Step and Deletion of Negative Constraints also largely improve the efficiency. Based on the ICM (Independent Continuous Mapping) method, a topological optimization model with continuous topological variables (between 0 and 1 instead of 0 or 1) is built. In order to quickly and accurately obtain the optimum topological structures, three criteria are introduced and a self-adaptive algorithm is proposed. To deal with the elements with their null topological variable, the weak material method is proposed and compared with the tiny section method. The topological optimization for multi-loading cases is studied with three conditions: the local stress constraints, the global displacement constraints and their combination. According to the above methods, the MSC/Patran&Nastran software is secondly developed. The examples clearly show the notable improvement of the efficiency and accuracy

Robotic soccer is a game like a real soccer but here the game is played by robots. The rules are the same, only there are few exceptions (foul, penalty kick, stalemate situation). Game is running without the human intervention. Just a human referee is supervising the game. Two teams are attending the game. Each of them has a control computer. The control computer is the brain of the game. It has a camera, it is making decisions for the next step of robots and sending them configuration data. The thesis deals with testing of communication interface and designs the new communication protocol for the next generation of the robots. The testing is provided by pocket pc Palm TX. It will send data over the Bluetooth interface to the control pc and will configure particular constants, like constants of PID regulator and an address of a robot. This will be provided by the IrDA interface.

Abstract:
The work of this thesis was focused on the development of high-performance algorithms for a new generation of molecular descriptors, with many advantages with respect to its predecessors, suitable for diverse applications in the field of drug design, as well as its implementation in commercial grade scientific software (Pentacle). As a first step, we developed a new algorithm (AMANDA) for discretizing molecular interaction fields which allows extracting from them the most interesting regions in an efficient way. This algorithm was incorporated into a new generation of alignmentindependent molecular descriptors, named GRIND-2. The computing speed and efficiency of the new algorithm allow the application of these descriptors in virtual screening. In addition, we developed a new alignment-independent encoding algorithm (CLACC) producing quantitative structure-activity relationship models which have better predictive ability and are easier to interpret than those obtained with other methods.

Salvador

Abstract:
The business drivers within managed care are mandating that physicians have point-of-care access to medical reference data, patient specific data, formularies, treatment protocols, and billing/coding information. One emerging technology that has the potential to provide this access with little economic investment is the mobile Personal Digital Assistant. The authors address a variety of wireless technologies and security concerns regarding real-time access to patient data. The family practice staff at the Naval Hospital Lemoore explored and contrasted the capabilities of commercially available PDAs, wireless interfaces, and medical software applications to ascertain their value within the Military Health System. A production-ready interface between the Composite Health Care System and the Nutrition Management Information Server demonstrates the potential for eliminating the difficulties associated with documenting patient encounters and capturing charges. Survey tools generate a requirements standard for deployment of this technology within the Military Health System on an enterprise-wide scale with a hybrid approach to packaging based on functionality. The authors recommend the Military Health System embrace this technology as a means to realize its vision of best value health services.
US Navy (USN) author
