Abstract:
It is hypothesized that there is a relationship between an individual’s underlying worldview and how supportive that individual is of resource development. There are five goals in this research: 1. to define worldview and explain its relevance to resource development conflict 2. to demonstrate that understanding history (of mining and of philosophy) is vital to defining and understanding the worldviews that are active in resource development 3. to propose an interrogatory methodology for defining a person’s operational worldview with respect to resource development conflict 4. to propose a me

The goal of this dissertation was to develop a relatively comprehensive and culturally de-centered measure of worldview assumptions, basic beliefs that humans have about the world and reality. A pool of 179 items was compiled from a selective review of the literature and submitted to Exploratory Factor Analysis in a US sample. The emergent 6-factor structure was submitted to increasingly stringent tests of invariance in samples from Lebanon, Singapore, and India and met the standards for factorial invariance. Human society faces many environmental and social threats as a result of systemic unsustainable behaviour and values. The root cause of these problems is our collective lack of awareness and inability to understand the connection between our actions and their consequences.
