Rising gas prices. Shifting population demographics. Residential inequity. A highly mobile, over-stimulated populace that is always on the go. Contemporary society is replete with forces pushing simultaneously away from the established suburban condition and towards density and development around transit. However the American allergy to city living, with its congestion, stigma and inefficiencies born through history, still perpetuates. This thesis posits that there is both a need and an inherent potential for the emergence of a new development typology: a suburban super-core, grafted onto existing multi-modal infrastructure intersections. Typically these sites have lain fallow following the invasion of the rail lines and multi-lane highways that fragmented the space and rendered the parcels too unattractive for development. The project of this thesis is to define what sort of space/place might start to locate itself in these zones. The first stage of the process determines the maximum floor area ratio (FAR) that could be inserted in the interest of achieving an extremely high density project.
(cont.) This is studied through a systematic analysis of case studies. The second step involves the defining the identity of these places, their organizing element: transfer. These two preparatory phases give rise to a series of rules shaping the development of these places and, in turn, to a series of parti diagrams that can be laid one over another and assembled into a development that is 'simply dense'. This methodology is then tested on the site of Secaucus Junction, New Jersey, where the confluence of infrastuctures makes an ideal site for the project of the thesis.

This research examines practices that achieve an urban fabric unique to its cultural heritage by promoting innovation in local building industries while embracing notions of urban livability. Prevailing urban livability theorists argue that built form is a physical manifestation of the expression of culture and agree that cultural heritage is important to a community's sustainability and identity. The central hypothesis is that "Quality" in the built environment in Bhutan is accomplished only by employing traditional building practices. "Quality", as defined here, is achieved when two factors are satisfied: 1) the construction is equal to or above established standards and, 2) the construction practice possesses the distinct characteristics of the culture. This hypothesis is tested through five case studies of current buildings in urban centers and through various discussions with design professionals, construction practitioners, government officials and others in Thimphu, Bhutan. The Royal Government of Bhutan is at the forefront of cultural heritage initiatives and has been celebrated for its progressive Gross National Happiness (GNH) development vision, a document that articulates the criteria for defining the distinct characteristics of the Bhutanese culture. However, the government has been challenged to implement this vision while facing the rapid development of its nascent urban centers. As part of the conclusion, the thesis proposes the establishment of a research institute, The Housing Research Institute of Bhutan, for the study of responsible building practices in support of GNH. The mission would be to inform design, development and construction processes formulated from the collection and dissemination of information, promotion of knowledge exchange, and support of research on materials, regulation, management and design through building demonstration projects. The institute will act as a conduit for the convergence of information and priorities between industry, contractors, government agencies and the public.

Full textAfter years of formalized international development efforts, the world continues to face significant problems. Humanity's greatest challenges - poverty, hunger, disease, and environmental degradation - remain prevalent and in some cases have even worsened. One reason the world's social problems are so resistant is an ideological failure to conceptualize a more inclusive economic order, one that values economic progress along with social justice. In light of this failure, innovative business models have emerged that create transformational change by integrating social value and economic profit, often referred to as social entrepreneurship. By questioning the structural and ideological boundaries that limit the relationship between the public, private, and nonprofit sectors, this thesis argues for social entrepreneurship as a viable means to overcome the predominant belief that economic and social progress are mutually exclusive goals.

Since the appropriate technology movement of the 1970s, technology and engineering from developed countries have played a role in international development. In recent years, universities have created graduate-level programs that look to engage students to solve challenges faced by resource-constrained communities globally by leveraging technology and innovation. These projects must balance the need for graduate students to produce scholarly research and the objective of creating impactful interventions for the world's poor and marginalized population. Furthermore, these projects must be conducted responsibly, remotely, and in fulfillment of project sponsors. This thesis explores two projects to better understand such engineering for development initiatives. The first project is a technology evaluation project that aimed to design and employ methodologies to determine which products in the "developing world" worked best. Specifically, the project's first evaluation on solar lanterns used in Uganda is described. The second project is a technology development project that sought to develop a scalable electricity grid technology platform to provide universal electricity access in India. The two projects are documented as case studies and conceptualized as design processes, specifically product development processes. Through the lens of the structured product development process, selected aspects of the cases are further explained and secondary literature serves as a basis for suggesting alternative design decisions and actions. Although the successes and failures of the two cases are not assessed in this work, the analysis suggests that technology-focused graduate-level projects in international development may explore alternative approaches that more carefully consider (1) early-stage planning, (2) contextualization of the technology focus, (3) project timescales, and (4) the intent of community engagement. Further work is needed to document and analyze the processes of other projects in this space and to understand how they vary. The product development process may be a useful tool in understanding how these projects might systematically achieve both scholarly and international development impact through the use of design and engineering.

The 787 program is the latest airplane development program in Boeing Commercial Airplanes. In this program, many new business processes, including a new supply chain structure will be implemented. Based on my six-month internship in Boeing, this thesis will address two critical supply chain issues that the 787 program currently faces and offer recommendations. The two issues are as follows: * Boeing currently plays a very active role in managing the ordering and scheduling protocols for drop-shipped components. Drop-shipped components are parts that are ordered by Boeing but to be delivered to another supplier or subcontractors for installation and assembly. Current processes will not be adequate to handle the large amount of drop-shipped components in the 787 program. It is recommended that Boeing sets up a supplier portal to manage the interactions with and between partners. * Current non-compliance management processes for drop-shipped components are not efficient enough for the 787 program. To solve this problem, it is recommended that Boeing devotes dedicated resources to work with individual structural partners on their sites to facilitate managing the non-conformance processes.

Full textWhilst thinking on economic policy for development has undergone many shifts with the perceived weak results of earlier adjustment reforms a new donor consensus has emerged based around the central themes of economic growth, good governance and social development. This paper examines the logic behind this new Aid paradigm and discusses the empirical evidence to support it. A nuanced story is revealed with country circumstances playing a critical role and particular interventions varying in impact across countries. For example, growth does not always lead to gains for the poor that match the national average; public expenditure needs to be targeted to achieve social development but effective targeting is difficult; governance reform may be critical but there is no simple governance blueprint and the corruption-growth association need not always be negative.

Full textThe paper discusses the concept of qualification, training aspects in context of lifelong learning. Aim of the final paper: to reveal the music teachers' attitudes towards professional development. To achieve the aim the following tasks were set: to provide definition of teacher’s qualification, to overview the training process, to list the music teacher’s professional competencies to carry out a study on music teachers' attitudes to the training process, and to summarizes the data. The object of investigation: the music teachers’ training. The study was conducted in twelve schools of Siauliai City. Questionnaire survey method was intended to find music teachers' attitudes towards professional development. The analysis of the scientific literature led to the following conclusions: qualification is the teacher’s knowledge and skill assessment degree. In Lithuania qualification training is conducted by non-formal education programs and informally. The training goal is to encourage music teachers to expand their competencies. In Lithuania the following training forms are distinguished: lecture, educational outing, conference, course, seminar, internship. Teacher professional competence inventory (2007) distinguishes between general cultural, professional, general, special competence. Music teacher's key competences are the ability to organize and develop musical language.

Full textThis study analyses two paradigms of regional integration, the European Union, as the most advanced model and the Mercosul. The purposes of this study is to analyze the possibility of promoting of development in the member-states within the regional integration and the regional integration too, breaking the paradigms, showing the possibility of becoming true the integration through different models as the Mercosul, and not only through the supranational European model. The purpose of this essay is to demonstrate which would be the necessary development to the States, as for the regional integration, independently of the model adopted and developed taking into account the dynamics in the economy and human development of each country. During this study, firstly, it will be analysed the fundamental elements to the fruition thereof, as the State. Then, we took into consideration the notion of sovereignty, as in the different standards and levels of integration and then the origin thereof based on the development achieved by the States. Using the European Union, as the supranational model of integration and Mercosul as the intergovernmental model, compare the development of the Statemembers, to demonstrate the existence or not of an ideal model of integration
