Abstract:
Over the past decade '"Sustainable Development" (SD) has emerged as the latest development catchphrase. A wide range of nongovernmental as well as governmental organizations have embraced it as the new paradigm of development. A review of the literature that has sprung up around the concept of SD indicates, however, a lack of consistency in its interpretation. More important, while the all-encompassing nature of the concept gives it political strength, its current formulation by the mainstream of SD thinking contains significant weaknesses. These include an incomplete perception of the problems of poverty and environmental degradation, and confusion about the role of economic growth and about the concept of sustainability. The purpose of this study was to identify common elements in a political economy of the environment, relating environmental change to the dynamics of ideology and policy, and at different levels of political complexity. The intention was to provide a structural analysis of the environment in which the development process illuminates environmental change at both a philosophical and material level. The problem in achieving SD was related to the overriding structures of the international economic system, which have arisen out of the exploitation of environmental resources, and which frequently operate as constraints on the achievement of long-term sustainable practices. Insufficient accounting of ecological aspects of economic growth and development has resulted from intellectual traditions, where solutions are formulated, point in different directions. Conclusions are drawn that SD involves trade-offs between biological, economic and social systems and is found in the interactive zone between these systems. There are a number of international factors that may be necessary, but insufficient, conditions for SD on a national level, including peace, debt reduction, and more propitious terms of trade. There was seen dilemmas relating to SD, including the role of growth as the unquestioned objective of economic policy.

Abstract:
The huge number of cctv cameras and security applications places increasing requirements on automatic visual tracking and behaviour classification systems. The best working example of such a tracker is the human visual system (hvs) which can flawlessly detect, track and understand almost any object or event. The research described in this thesis uses lessons learnt from studies of the hvs to develop a novel approach for computerbased visual tracking. In this approach, initial detection of moving objects is achieved using a new motion distillation paradigm which employs spatio-temporal wavelet decomposition of video. The method is shown to be more robust than traditional background modelling techniques while being computationally less expensive. As with the hvs, the approach uses a dual-channel tracking architecture to perform tracking. The motion channel, generated through motion distillation, handles object detection and initialises tracking. The form channel is used to resolve tracking ambiguities and occlusions. Qualitative and quantitative tracking results illustrate the advantages of this approach. This thesis also describes a new approach to the task of ob- 4 ject (e.G. Human) behaviour analysis - a subject which is of great importance, yet which is still an under-researched aspect of visual tracking. In the work described here, objects are categorised into vehicles, pedestrians, runners, groups and unknown pedestrian behaviour.

Rising gas prices. Shifting population demographics. Residential inequity. A highly mobile, over-stimulated populace that is always on the go. Contemporary society is replete with forces pushing simultaneously away from the established suburban condition and towards density and development around transit. However the American allergy to city living, with its congestion, stigma and inefficiencies born through history, still perpetuates. This thesis posits that there is both a need and an inherent potential for the emergence of a new development typology: a suburban super-core, grafted onto existing multi-modal infrastructure intersections. Typically these sites have lain fallow following the invasion of the rail lines and multi-lane highways that fragmented the space and rendered the parcels too unattractive for development. The project of this thesis is to define what sort of space/place might start to locate itself in these zones. The first stage of the process determines the maximum floor area ratio (FAR) that could be inserted in the interest of achieving an extremely high density project.
(cont.) This is studied through a systematic analysis of case studies. The second step involves the defining the identity of these places, their organizing element: transfer. These two preparatory phases give rise to a series of rules shaping the development of these places and, in turn, to a series of parti diagrams that can be laid one over another and assembled into a development that is 'simply dense'. This methodology is then tested on the site of Secaucus Junction, New Jersey, where the confluence of infrastuctures makes an ideal site for the project of the thesis.

Levin, Todd. "Understanding the centralized-decentralized electrification paradigm." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/52165.

Abstract:
Two methodologies are presented for analyzing the choice between centralized and decentralized energy infrastructures from a least-cost perspective. The first of these develops a novel minimum spanning tree network algorithm to approximate the shortest-length network that connects a given fraction of total system population. This algorithm is used to identify high priority locations for decentralized electrification in 150 countries. The second methodology utilizes a mixed-integer programming framework to determine the least-cost combination of centralized and decentralized electricity infrastructure that is capable of serving demand throughout a given system. This methodology is demonstrated through a case study of Rwanda. The centralized-decentralized electrification paradigm is also approached from an energy security perspective, incorporating stochastic events and probabilistic parameters into a simulation model that is used to compare different development paths. The impact of explicitly modeling stochastic events as opposed to utilizing a conventional formulation is also considered Finally, a subsidy-free lighting cost curve is developed and a model is presented to compare the costs and benefits of three different financial mechanisms that can be employed to make capital intensive energy systems more accessible to rural populations. The optimal contract is determined on the basis of utility-maximization for a range of costs to the providing agency and a comprehensive single and multi-factor sensitivity analysis is performed.

This research examines practices that achieve an urban fabric unique to its cultural heritage by promoting innovation in local building industries while embracing notions of urban livability. Prevailing urban livability theorists argue that built form is a physical manifestation of the expression of culture and agree that cultural heritage is important to a community's sustainability and identity. The central hypothesis is that "Quality" in the built environment in Bhutan is accomplished only by employing traditional building practices. "Quality", as defined here, is achieved when two factors are satisfied: 1) the construction is equal to or above established standards and, 2) the construction practice possesses the distinct characteristics of the culture. This hypothesis is tested through five case studies of current buildings in urban centers and through various discussions with design professionals, construction practitioners, government officials and others in Thimphu, Bhutan. The Royal Government of Bhutan is at the forefront of cultural heritage initiatives and has been celebrated for its progressive Gross National Happiness (GNH) development vision, a document that articulates the criteria for defining the distinct characteristics of the Bhutanese culture. However, the government has been challenged to implement this vision while facing the rapid development of its nascent urban centers. As part of the conclusion, the thesis proposes the establishment of a research institute, The Housing Research Institute of Bhutan, for the study of responsible building practices in support of GNH. The mission would be to inform design, development and construction processes formulated from the collection and dissemination of information, promotion of knowledge exchange, and support of research on materials, regulation, management and design through building demonstration projects. The institute will act as a conduit for the convergence of information and priorities between industry, contractors, government agencies and the public.

After years of formalized international development efforts, the world continues to face significant problems. Humanity's greatest challenges - poverty, hunger, disease, and environmental degradation - remain prevalent and in some cases have even worsened. One reason the world's social problems are so resistant is an ideological failure to conceptualize a more inclusive economic order, one that values economic progress along with social justice. In light of this failure, innovative business models have emerged that create transformational change by integrating social value and economic profit, often referred to as social entrepreneurship. By questioning the structural and ideological boundaries that limit the relationship between the public, private, and nonprofit sectors, this thesis argues for social entrepreneurship as a viable means to overcome the predominant belief that economic and social progress are mutually exclusive goals.

Abstract:
This research investigates the role that the individualist/collectivist dimension plays in the selection of the preferred method of building trust. Sixty five middle managers from a primary metal producer were analysed using two surveys. The individuals were classified as either individualists or collectivists and then asked to rate several statements regarding a preferred means of trust. The various means of developing trust were calculative, predictive, intentionality, capability and transference. The data collected should that only with calculative trust development did a clear preference exist between collectivists and individualists. The four remaining trust development processes were equally likely to be used by either group. The data also showed that neither race, nor language nor ethnic group could be used as a predictor of assignment to either cultural dimension. The selection of the sample population and the subsequent influence of organisation specific phenomenon were found to be highly influential on the selection of trust building process. Copyright

Abstract:
Proper metazoan development requires that genes are expressed in a spatiotemporally controlled manner, with tightly regulated levels. Altering the expression of genes that govern development leads mostly to aberrations. However, alterations can also be beneficial, leading to the formation of new phenotypes, which contributes to the astounding diversity of animal forms. In the past the expression of developmental genes has been studied mostly in fixed tissues, which is unable to visualize these highly dynamic processes. We combine genomic fosmid transgenes, expressing genes of interest close to endogenous conditions, with Selective Plane Illumination Microscopy (SPIM) to image the expression of genes live with high temporal resolution and at single cell level in the entire embryo. In an effort to expand the toolkit for studying Drosophila development we have characterized the global expression patterns of various developmentally important genes in the whole embryo. To process the large datasets generated by SPIM, we have developed an automated workflow for processing on a High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster. In a parallel project, we wanted to understand how spatiotemporally regulated gene expression patterns and levels lead to different morphologies across Drosophila species. To this end we have compared by SPIM the expression of transcription factors (TFs) encoded by Drosophila melanogaster fosmids to their orthologous Drosophila pseudoobscura counterparts by expressing both fosmids in D. melanogaster. Here, we present an analysis of divergence of expression of orthologous genes compared A) directly by expressing the fosmids, tagged with different fluorophore, in the same D. melanogaster embryo or B) indirectly by expressing the fosmids, tagged with the same fluorophore, in separate D. melanogaster embryos. Our workflow provides powerful methodology for the study of gene expression patterns and levels during development, such knowledge is a basis for understanding both their evolutionary relevance and developmental function.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the use of media and journalistic practice for development. The study concentrates on Africa and argues that development strategies are dependent on a clear understanding of the contexts and constraints of a situation. It is argued that Africa's history and present political and socio-economic situations have contributed to the instability and poverty facing many of its nation states. It is also argued that continued dependency by African nations on richer Western nations is a problem originating from colonial imperialism and the failed dominant paradigm, recently reinvented as globalisation and global economic rationalisation. The work presents a view of communication for development which can only be achieved with an understanding of the relations between media, culture, dependency and the making of meaning.Solutions to Africa's problems may require Africans themselves undertaking development in a concept of their own 'voice' and self-representation. With this view, a model for how journalists, using media, should actively engage in development is suggested. Two case studies are presented : a study of communication dysfunction at Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya and a study of the concept of Edutainment by South Africa's Soul City's organisation. Further, selections of media programs are presented as part of the dissertation's proposed body of work.

Abstract:
For the majority of the computers existence, we humans have interacted with them in a similar way, usually with a strict one-to-one relationship between user and machine. This is reflected by the design of most computers, operating systems and user applications on the market today, which are typically intended to only be operated by a single user. When computers are used for teamwork and cooperation, this design philosophy can be restricting and problematic. This paper investigates the development of shared software intended for multiple users and the impact of the single user bias in this context. A prototype software system was developed in order to evaluate different development methods for shared applications and discover potential challenges and limitations with this kind of software. It was found that the development of applications for multiple users can be severely limited by the target operating system and hardware platform. The authors conclude that new platforms are required to develop shared software more efficiently. These platforms should be tailored to provide robust support for multiple concurrent users. This work was carried out together with SAAB Air Traffic Management in Växjö, Sweden and is a bachelor's thesis in computer engineering at Linnaeus University.

Since the appropriate technology movement of the 1970s, technology and engineering from developed countries have played a role in international development. In recent years, universities have created graduate-level programs that look to engage students to solve challenges faced by resource-constrained communities globally by leveraging technology and innovation. These projects must balance the need for graduate students to produce scholarly research and the objective of creating impactful interventions for the world's poor and marginalized population. Furthermore, these projects must be conducted responsibly, remotely, and in fulfillment of project sponsors. This thesis explores two projects to better understand such engineering for development initiatives. The first project is a technology evaluation project that aimed to design and employ methodologies to determine which products in the "developing world" worked best. Specifically, the project's first evaluation on solar lanterns used in Uganda is described. The second project is a technology development project that sought to develop a scalable electricity grid technology platform to provide universal electricity access in India. The two projects are documented as case studies and conceptualized as design processes, specifically product development processes. Through the lens of the structured product development process, selected aspects of the cases are further explained and secondary literature serves as a basis for suggesting alternative design decisions and actions. Although the successes and failures of the two cases are not assessed in this work, the analysis suggests that technology-focused graduate-level projects in international development may explore alternative approaches that more carefully consider (1) early-stage planning, (2) contextualization of the technology focus, (3) project timescales, and (4) the intent of community engagement. Further work is needed to document and analyze the processes of other projects in this space and to understand how they vary. The product development process may be a useful tool in understanding how these projects might systematically achieve both scholarly and international development impact through the use of design and engineering.

The 787 program is the latest airplane development program in Boeing Commercial Airplanes. In this program, many new business processes, including a new supply chain structure will be implemented. Based on my six-month internship in Boeing, this thesis will address two critical supply chain issues that the 787 program currently faces and offer recommendations. The two issues are as follows: * Boeing currently plays a very active role in managing the ordering and scheduling protocols for drop-shipped components. Drop-shipped components are parts that are ordered by Boeing but to be delivered to another supplier or subcontractors for installation and assembly. Current processes will not be adequate to handle the large amount of drop-shipped components in the 787 program. It is recommended that Boeing sets up a supplier portal to manage the interactions with and between partners. * Current non-compliance management processes for drop-shipped components are not efficient enough for the 787 program. To solve this problem, it is recommended that Boeing devotes dedicated resources to work with individual structural partners on their sites to facilitate managing the non-conformance processes.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the sustainability of professional development--teacher utilization of the Science-in-CTE pedagogical model and science-enhanced CTE lessons--one year following the Science-in-CTE Pilot Study. This study included 27 teachers (15 experimental CTE and 12 science) who participated in the Pilot Study in 2009-2010. This study was a partial replication of the Math-in-CTE Follow-up Study and data were collected using a mixed methods approach. Quantitative data were obtained from online questionnaires and qualitative data were collected from personal and telephone interviews. Data found that a majority of the CTE and science teachers voluntarily incorporated portions of the seven-element pedagogical model and 15 science-enhanced lessons into their curricula one year later. Findings suggest that collaborative professional development is an effective method of integrating science content into CTE curricula to enhance student CTE course achievement without reducing the intent of the CTE program.

Abstract:
After almost 10 years from “The Free Lunch Is Over” article, where the need to parallelize programs started to be a real and mainstream issue, a lot of stuffs did happened: • Processor manufacturers are reaching the physical limits with most of their approaches to boosting CPU performance, and are instead turning to hyperthreading and multicore architectures; • Applications are increasingly need to support concurrency; • Programming languages and systems are increasingly forced to deal well with concurrency. This thesis is an attempt to propose an overview of a paradigm that aims to properly abstract the problem of propagating data changes: Reactive Programming (RP). This paradigm proposes an asynchronous non-blocking approach to concurrency and computations, abstracting from the low-level concurrency mechanisms.

Full text
Abstract:
A personal social learning experience in itself, the thesis articulates the territory/function dialectic as an alternative, social learning paradigm of regional development planning. The current crisis affecting this activity is firstly diagnosed, the underlying problem is then traced to the prevailing orthodoxy, and, in its place, a new paradigm is offered. The story behind the thesis is told via a characterisation of the overall study process as a transition from objective empiricism to empirical subjectivism. The story features highlights of the main case study experiences as well as those insights gained during the actual creation, that is, in the writing, of the ultimate thesis. After identifying the desirable qualities in a contending paradigm, and elaborating the basic elements of the territory/function dialectic, particular attention is given to the significance of territory. This is complemented by a discussion of the fundamental change in the thinking of John Friedmann, who must be credited with originating the subject dialectic. A literature review is presented featuring a consideration of competing paradigms. A detailed contrast of the centre-periphery and territory/function conceptualisations is also presented before concluding with some critical revelations and key insights. The territory/function dialectic is seen to possess the attributes of both a substantive and methodological paradigm. The special paradigm status is bolstered by a consideration of geography's role in relation to the key concept of territory. The paradigm as a whole is seen to underpin an alternative epistemology combining critical science and social learning. The lessons from a social learning experience are elaborated in a revisitation of the original objectives-cum-working hypotheses. These lessons feature: the pursuit of more real theory; the social value of underdevelopment theory; the explicit role of the state as manifest in official practice; and the significance of learning through collective action. The territory/function dialectic is seen to provide the necessary link between theory and practice in an all encompassing manner. The thesis concludes with a review of certain basic, dialectical, dualities. There is also specific consideration of planning and social learning, entailing further distinctions between not only theory and practice, but also between scientific practice and social practice.

Abstract:
Today, the credibility of the international development community is increasingly being called into question. At the root of the problem are the extremely unequal nature of recent growth, the end of the Cold War, economic recession in the North, and the lacklustre record of foreign aid in reaching those left behind. By the 1990s, the notion of Sustainable Human Development (SHD) or what is sometimes called People-Centred Development (PCD) was being hailed as a possible framework for building a newly-invigorated system of international development cooperation based on genuine North-South partnership, holistic, equitable, participatory, empowering and sustainable development. This thesis explores the implementability and transformational potential of the SHD/PCD paradigm by analyzing how a multilateral development agency (UNDP) and an international NGO (Action Aid) put it into practice both globally and in Uganda. Its main argument is that despite both agencies' contributions to service-delivery and training, and their genuine efforts to reorient their work towards SHD/PCD approaches, in the final analysis neither UNDP or Action Aid realize the more transformative goals of the SHD/PCD agenda or seriously challenge the status quo. This is partly due to the excessively abstract, unfinished, ideologically confused and contradictory nature of the SHD/PCD paradigm itself, (i.e., the Baroque Science Phenomenon). However UNDP and Action Aid, both of which adopted SHD/PCD to enhance their profiles, must assume much of the responsibility blame for subordinating core SHD/PCD goals to their own organizational interests (i.e., the River Pollution Phenomenon) . The thesis also demonstrates how both agencies undermine their effectiveness by making a series of fallacious assumptions about both poor communities' and their own catalytic potential in an effort to reconcile the gap between their agencies' SHD/PCD aspirations and the real-life constraints facing their goals.

Yangden, Tshering. "Gender, Culture and Development:In the Paradigm of Gross National Happiness in Bhutan." Thesis, University of Canterbury. School of Social and Political Sciences, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/4026.

Full text
Abstract:
This study of women in Bhutan is based on the country’s unique development concept known as Gross National Happiness (GNH). Whereas in most countries, a western approach to development concentrates on increasing Gross Domestic Product to improve a country’s economy, Bhutan follows a different approach based on improving the general well-being of the people. The thesis argues that Bhutan has relegated Gross Domestic Product to the background where it can be used as a means to enhance “happiness” but not as an overall goal of development and that the impacts of this on women require separate study. There are four elements that form the core of the Gross National Happiness concept: good governance, environmental conservation, cultural preservation and socio-economic development. This thesis has focused on only two elements of the GNH concept, questioning the nature of cultural preservation and socio-economic development. This is because cultural preservation is one of the areas that affects women particularly. In the path of development, many socio-economic policies inadvertently discriminate against women although their intentions are gender neutral. Thus, the overall purpose of this thesis is to explore women’s position, especially in the education sector and the impact of tradition and culture on Bhutanese women. The relationship between women in Bhutan and the government policy of preserving culture is analysed in order to determine if there is conflict between preserving culture and sustaining happiness against the backdrop of the fast pace of economic development. The methodological approach for this thesis is both qualitative and quantitative. Because of the limited written material on Bhutan, it was important to talk to members of the public to explore general perceptions, feelings and opinions relating to government policies and the impact of development activities and culture on their lives and also to bring in unofficial perspectives. Participants consisted of twenty households in the village and twenty-two participants from the urban area to address urban/rural differences. Literacy is less in rural areas as is access to information and exposure to western influences. Official documents, newspapers, on-line discussion forums, school curricula and films were also drawn on to explore the role of culture and the impact of development policies on the Bhutanese people. The thesis concludes that cultural preservation, particularly when followed uncritically, remains a major obstacle to women’s empowerment towards achieving their development goals.

Quakenbush, Benita J. "Pretherapy Videotape Presentation for Eating Disorder Clients: Development and Evaluation." DigitalCommons@USU, 1998. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/6135.

Full text
Abstract:
Eating disorder clients show low motivation, poor follow-through, and inordinate premature dropout rates in treatment. Earlier studies support the use of pretherapy training to help clients understand the tasks and challenges of therapy. However, a pretherapy intervention, such as showing prospective clients a video that outlines recovery issues and themes, had not yet been developed specifically for the prevalent, recalcitrant problem of eating disorders. Thus, of particular interest to clinicians who treat eating disorders may be the development of a theoretically sound, pretherapy videotape that outlines recovery issues. One of the purposes of this study was to review prior investigations of the effects of pretherapy films/videos on therapy outcomes. However, the central focus of this dissertation was to develop a pretherapy video for use with eating disorder clients, and using quantitative methods, assess the quality and likely therapeutic utility of the pretherapy video. The video was developed to be theoretically consistent with Bandura's modeling paradigm, social learning theory. Eating disorder clients, a comparison group of college women, and professional clinicians who are experienced at treating women with eating disorders were asked to view and evaluate the video (developed to orient prospective clients to recovery issues during treatment for eating disorders). All three groups reportedly found the recovering women portrayed in the video credible, believable, and persuasive. All groups of observers indicated that the video presented an understandable and hopeful message possessing emotional impact, and they avowed that the video created expectations for improvement. Also, the viewers believed the pretherapy video would likely increase knowledge of eating disorder recovery, and that future eating disorder clients viewing the video would likely learn new information that would facilitate their recovery. Additionally, the three groups indicated the video seemed to be of general relevance and therapeutic utility to women with eating disorders.

"The Functional Paradigm in Embedded Real-Time Systems : A study in the problems and opportunities the functional programming paradigm entails to embedded real-time systems." Thesis, Mälardalens högskola, Akademin för innovation, design och teknik, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:mdh:diva-26145.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the possibility of the functional programming paradigm in the domain of hard embedded real-time systems. The implementation consists of re-implementing an already developed system that is written with the imperative and object oriented paradigms. The functional implementation of the system in question is compared with the original implementation and a study of code complexity, timing properties, CPU utilization and memory usage is performed. The implementation of this thesis consists of re-developing three of the periodic tasks of the original system and the whole development process is facilitated with the TDD development cycle. The programming language used in this thesis is C but with a functional approach to the problem. We conclusions of this thesis is that the functional implementation will give a more stable, reliable and readable system but some code volume, memory usage and CPU utilization overhead is present. The main benefit of using the functional paradigm in this type of system is the ability of using the TDD development cycle. The main con of this type of implementation is that it relies heavily on garbage collection due to the enforcement of data immutability. We find in conclusion that one can only use the functional paradigm if one has an over dimensioned system when it comes to hardware, mainly when it comes to memory size and CPU power. When developing small systems with scarce resources one should choose another paradigm.

Full text
Abstract:
The sense of smell plays an important role in regulating the behavior of Asian elephants but until now, no behavioral test to systematically assess the olfactory capabilities of this species existed. Using a voluntary, food-rewarded two-alternative operant conditioning procedure, three female Asian elephants were successfully taught to discriminate between rewarded and unrewarded odors and also succeeded in intramodal stimulus transfer tasks in which either the rewarded odor, or the unrewarded odor, or both odors were exchanged simultaneously for new odors. The animals readily mastered the initial task within only 120 stimulus contacts, demonstrating rapid olfactory learning and performing at least as good as rodents and dogs and even better than other species, including nonhuman primates, tested in similar studies before. When presented with pairs of structurally related odorants, the discrimination performance of the elephants decreased with increasing structural similarity of the odorants, but the animals still significantly discriminated between aliphatic acetic esters even when they only differed by one carbon chain length. The elephants also demonstrated an excellent long-term odor memory and successfully remembered the reward value of previously learned odor stimuli after two, four, eight and even 16 weeks of recess in testing. The paradigm developed and applied in the present study proved to be useful to assess the olfactory capabilities in Asian elephants.

Mortimer, Christine Joan. "Beyond the transformational leadership paradigm : a Foucaultian analysis of UK leadership literature development." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2012. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/21129/.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary aim of this research is to re-interpret the development of business leadership within a political, economic and socio-historic framework in order to explore a contemporary problem that has arisen with leadership. The problem, identified in Chapter Two is, 'that leadership training, development and education may not be delivering the leadership skills required for the 21st Century'. The primary research objectives were to: • Develop a reflexive Foucaultian analysis of leadership development as a 'body of knowledge' in order to illustrate alternative leadership constructs. • Operationalize the research strategy on a contemporary business leadership issue identified in a social, political and economic context. • Open up a marginalised but inclusive space outside the dominant leadership discourse that would enable researchers, educationalists and practitioners to consider alternative thoughts on leadership, to spark new thought and conversations. The primary premise is to create a marginal space outside the dominant leadership discourse in order to reveal how political, economic and socio-historical influences affect the development of leadership theory and literature. The thesis explores how these influences in turn conceal threads of leadership thought which, when revealed, contribute to an alternative understanding of business leadership in the present day. This research, based on a Foucaultian research strategy informed by reflexive interpretation, initially creates a History of the Present composed of a macro and micro perspective of leadership literature. The macro perspective constructs current leadership literature to demonstrate how the socio-historical influences have developed transformational leadership theory into a paradigm. The micro view is developed from a sample of UK leadership research between 2007 and 2009. The articles are used to deconstruct the concept of leadership within this bounded frame. The resultant 'statements' of leadership from these two views are traced from the present through to their first emergence in the early 1900s. This process reveals a concealed leadership history that is based on the transformational possibilities of the present and engages with reciprocal relationship building. The conclusion draws attention to an alternative research strategy in which to examine the concept of business leadership. The contributions made by this study to the wider business leadership literature are, • To develop and operationalize, through a problem presented in the present a research strategy based on reflexivity and Foucaultian historical analysis, • To open a marginal space in which to view leadership theory development from an alternative perspective • To generate new conversations and spark new thoughts concerning leadership practice in the 21st Century.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis studies the symbolic regimes of Southern and Northern development cooperation partners. Symbolic regime is understood as the jointly articulated discourse of the Southern and Northern development partners. South-North cooperation is a suitable topic for study due to its peculiarity. The power structure typically seen in development cooperation is inverted, with the Southern country being the primary architect of cooperation between the two countries, unlike in traditional development cooperation. The study is placed in the context of wider research on convergence between Southern and Northern countries. Symbolic regimes are studied by inductively generating theoretical categories using a grounded theory method on documents from China’s Belt and Road Initiative and comparing those categories with established North-South and South-South symbolic regimes, which are framed using gift theory. The results suggest that China and its Northern partners’ symbolic regime is similar to the symbolic regime from South-South cooperation, without the emotional claims of solidarity or empathy. Jointly articulated discourse was found primarily to detail intended consequences and facilitating conditions, while individually articulated material showed that there are realities which are obscured by the symbolic regimes.

Abstract:
This research explores leadership development in the Church of God Mission International (CGMi), Nigeria, from its beginnings in 1968 to date, and the leadership challenges of the future of the Church. The thesis examines the charisms of leadership in Benson Idahosa’s life as the founder of the movement, and subsequent developments – its expansion and emergence as a major Pentecostal denomination. A biographical narrative of Benson Idahosa’s ministry along with a historiographical account of CGMi, up to the present time of transition from a charismatic missional movement to a more settled institutional denomination. This narrative raises the primary research question: Can the charism of the founder be continued in CGMi as a more settled Church? The thesis is an interdisciplinary study that brings together Church leadership, missiology and Pentecostal studies with the sociology of routinization in order to explore the importance, aspirations and reality of leadership in a mission movement turned settled Church. This analysis reveals a leadership tension situated in the struggle between charismatic and institutional emphases. The sociology of routinization is used to interpret the current state of CGMi as a Church in transition, reflected in the changing nature of leadership. It is argued that a more settled institutional approach to leadership is currently steering CGMi, which may divert the Church from its original charismatic and missional emphasis. The thesis offers a challenge to the sociological inevitability of routinization, by exploring a theological approach to leadership renewal guided by the charism of the founder. The concept of leadership renewal provides a framework for discernment by distinguishing between the essential and non-essential elements of the founder’s charism. This also requires discernment about the transmission or non-transmission of those elements in order to meet the contemporary demands of the Church, while preserving the original essence of the movement. It is argued that a theology of leadership renewal is needed in order to provide a corrective measure to the pressures of institutionalisation, through a charismatic emphasis on leadership development. The aim of the thesis, therefore, is to propose a theology of leadership renewal, fit for the future of the Church, in which the charismatic and institutional dimensions work cooperatively, and without collapsing the tension that exists between them.

Abstract:
Yes
Whilst thinking on economic policy for development has undergone many shifts with the perceived weak results of earlier adjustment reforms a new donor consensus has emerged based around the central themes of economic growth, good governance and social development. This paper examines the logic behind this new Aid paradigm and discusses the empirical evidence to support it. A nuanced story is revealed with country circumstances playing a critical role and particular interventions varying in impact across countries. For example, growth does not always lead to gains for the poor that match the national average; public expenditure needs to be targeted to achieve social development but effective targeting is difficult; governance reform may be critical but there is no simple governance blueprint and the corruption-growth association need not always be negative.

Abstract:
A higher share of renewable energy in power generation is one of most ambitious goals for sustainable development under the increasing pressure of climate change. On the deregulated electricity market in Sweden, the consumers are able to choose their electricity from a specific supplier and a specific energy source, which gives them the opportunity to execute their consumer power to have positive impacts on increasing energy efficiency and renewable electricity generation by stopping buying electricity produced from fossil fuels. A new paradigm is thus proposed in this paper which provides a new perspective on purchase of the product electricity. The new paradigm makes electricity a specified product for a specific customer, the electricity audited is never mixed with that not audited, because all electricity which is audited can be traced. The aim of this study is to provide a greater understanding of the new paradigm on the deregulated electricity market. By conducting a willingness to pay survey and several deep interviews, it analyzed the main factors hindering the customers’understanding of the new market dynamics in terms of active choice in ‘green’ electricity and stopping buying fossil electricity. The results and discussions show that the new paradigm could facilitate shedding light on some important implications for strategic decision making in power companies, for policy-makers as well as customers.

Abstract:
Development aid has long been a major policy tool of the discourse and policy practiceof bilateral and multilateral donors alike. Originally used for servicing the reconstructionof post-war economies and the wider geo-political aspirations of the period, moderndevelopment aid was quickly transformed to an ever-growing industry which hasexpanded to the most remote locations of the globe. Large countries and internationalorganisations swiftly set up a variety of specialised agencies, institutes and researchcentres in order to promote their aid programmes and projects to the poor countries ofthe South. The persistent failure of the development industry to achieve substantialresults in the poorest regions of the world has meant that discourse and priority areashave been redirected multiple times according to the trends of every period. However, itis not clear how far development practice actually alters in correspondence with changesin aid discourse. This dissertation provides an empirical study of the relationshipbetween the two in the context of the move to bottom-up 'partnership' discourse andJapan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) development practise in Ghana. During the last ten years Ghana has geared its development policies towards achievingthe Millennium Development Goals and entering the group of countries classified ashaving (lower) middle-income status. Major donor agencies like JICA have gathered inthe country to provide their 'expertise' and to 'assist' Ghana in reaching the targets ofthe Millennium Declaration. Drawing from two JICA case studies of TechnicalCooperation for Capacity Development in Ghana in health and education this thesissheds light on the differences between JICA's aid rhetoric and practice. This studyargues that despite JICA's aid discourse for a 'demand-driven', 'relevant' and'participatory' aid understanding, its implementation practice contradicts the substantivenormative meanings of these terms and is instead reticent of the past orthodox and 'topdown'aid practices of big donor countries and organisations.

This study analyses two paradigms of regional integration, the European Union, as the most advanced model and the Mercosul. The purposes of this study is to analyze the possibility of promoting of development in the member-states within the regional integration and the regional integration too, breaking the paradigms, showing the possibility of becoming true the integration through different models as the Mercosul, and not only through the supranational European model. The purpose of this essay is to demonstrate which would be the necessary development to the States, as for the regional integration, independently of the model adopted and developed taking into account the dynamics in the economy and human development of each country. During this study, firstly, it will be analysed the fundamental elements to the fruition thereof, as the State. Then, we took into consideration the notion of sovereignty, as in the different standards and levels of integration and then the origin thereof based on the development achieved by the States. Using the European Union, as the supranational model of integration and Mercosul as the intergovernmental model, compare the development of the Statemembers, to demonstrate the existence or not of an ideal model of integration

Brennan, Michelle Claire Elizabeth. "Sustainable construction in the 21st century : an educational perspective to shifting the paradigm." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2015. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/4532/.

Full text
Abstract:
Sustainability is a ubiquitous topic debated across the globe. The potential of the construction industry to alleviate the effects of environmental damage whilst contributing to the social and economic dimension of sustainability are great. Despite many efforts by both Government and Higher Education Institutions, the adoption of sustainable construction practices is well below where it needs to be. Much work needs to be done in reprogramming the minds of those in an economically facing industry to ensure a sustainable future. This research looks at the efficacy of an educational intervention for such change and the use of psychological variables in assisting the process. This thesis contributes to original knowledge through the development of a validated measurement tool designed to measure attitudes towards sustainable development in a construction context. The tool was used to investigate associations between attitudes and psychological constructs. The research makes a further contribution through the development of an educational intervention which supports the use of alternative pedagogies for sustainability education. The research was conducted in four phases, with phases one and three making the contribution to knowledge. A concurrent mixed methodology approach was adopted utilising an embedded design. Quantitative data was collected in phase one with this phase running concurrently alongside the other phases throughout the project. Qualitative data was collected in phases two and four with phase three adopting a mixed model approach. The conclusions drawn from phase one were that there are associations between emotional self-efficacy and positive attitudes towards sustainability but not with optimism. Phase two highlighted that changes in attitudes towards sustainability would need to be driven through, legislation, education and leadership. This resulted in the development of an intervention with students at LJMU based on principles of student-centred learning. Analysis of the student feedback indicated that the intervention had a positive impact on students with perceptions changing as to how important sustainability is and how important the construction industry is for this to be achieved. The intervention tool developed within this research has the potential to be adapted for use with a wide variety of audiences, in particular those in positions of high level decision making. A top-down and a bottom-up approach is recommended if we are to achieve the aspiration of a sustainable future.

Parker, Paul Francis. "Development of the Research Paradigm Inventory to Measure Views About Research Practices and Beliefs." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/37384.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument to measure the views of educational researchers across the dimensions that comprise research paradigms. The development of the instrument, entitled the Research Paradigm Inventory (RPI), was conducted in the hope of providing a mechanism for future research that will enable the examination of prospective links between the ontological, epistemological and methodological orientations of researchers and graduate students who will serve as future inquirers in the field of education. During its development and validation, various aspects of the RPI were examined in accordance with the validity framework outlined by Samuel Messick (1989). According to Messick (1989), the validity of measure interpretation and corresponding action can be examined in terms of content, substantive, structural, generalizability, external and consequential forms of evidence. During this study, the content aspect of validity was addressed through the creation of instrument specifications and the development of items that were mapped to those specifications. In addition, the content aspect of validity was addressed by selecting items that were reviewed by experts, pilot tested, field tested and exhibited high technical quality. The substantive aspect of validity was addressed through an analysis of item rating scale functioning, person fit, item difficulty hierarchies and relationships among instrument scale measures. The structural aspect of validity was addressed through a confirmation of the instrumentâ s dimensionality. The generalizability aspect of validity was addressed through an analysis of person reliability, the precision of item/person parameter estimates and item calibration invariance. The development activities and analyses described above resulted in the creation of six subscales measuring: (1) Realism in Research, (2) Research Objectivism, (3) Quantitative Methodology, (4) Relativism in Research, (5) Research Interpretivism and (6) Qualitative Methodology. Given the evidence collected, these scales appear to provide reasonably reliable and defensible estimates of individualsâ attitudes toward various research practices and beliefs, and should be appropriate for future research studies exploring educational research paradigms.
