AbstractAn estimated 12 million girls aged 15–19 years, and 777,000 girls younger than 15 give birth globally each year. Contexts of war and displacement increase the likelihood of early marriage and childbearing. Given the developmentally sensitive periods of early childhood and adolescence, adolescent motherhood in conflict-affected contexts may put a family at risk intergenerationally. We propose that the specifics of normative neuroendocrine development during adolescence, including increased sensitivity to stress, pose additional risks to adolescent girls and their young children in the f

Adolescence is a period of development characterized by risk-taking, sensation-seeking, emotionally-influenced and independence-seeking behaviours. There is a move away from family and towards the social influences of peer groups. Emotionally-driven behaviours may override adolescents’ higher cognitive functioning during this time. Especially vulnerable are youth who have been the victim of high-impact trauma or chronic abuse and neglect. However, outcomes related to general social functioning and, more specifically, intimate relationship functioning are also important to study as they may contribute to perpetuation of violence. AbstractDuring the COVID-19 crisis, the governmental restrictions seriously affected the daily lives of adolescents (aged 12–25). They could not attend school, had to limit face-to-face contact with peers, and had to stay at home with their parents. This chapter combines insights from theoretical models on adolescent development with some of the first empirical findings of the impact of COVID-19 on adolescents. We will discuss how lockdown and social distancing measures affect mental health and well-being in a formative and vulnerable period in life. Specifically, the authors focus on delayed attainment of developmental tasks toward adulthood, the importance of friendships, and how parents can promote developmental growth and resilience in a “new common.” Advice is included on how future society can and should be shaped around the developmental needs, risks, and opportunities that characterize adolescence.

Abstract:
This chapter presents developmental and attachment theory approaches to understanding the impacts of political violence on children and families. It argues that each developmental period provides unique resources and vulnerabilities. The chapter focuses particularly on infancy and adolescence. Both are periods in human life when the most intensive socioemotional, neurocognitive, and psychophysiological reorganizations take place. The chapter suggests an attachment theory approach as a way of increasing the understanding of fetal and infant well-being, dyadic interaction, and parenting in conditions of war and political violence. Research based on attachment theory also guides our understanding of adolescents’ socioemotional, cognitive, and behavioral responses to political violence and trauma. The chapter discusses the developmental and attachment theoretical implications for interventions with victims of violence and trauma-affected infants, adolescents, and their families.

Child development is segmented into five periods and the bridge between early childhood and adolescence is named as “middle childhood.” One of the milestones of this period is schooling. Middle childhood children start learning about the world; their roles, responsibilities and how to participate in this world by communicating with others besides the family members. These abilities are gained mostly at school with peer relations. In this chapter, the developmental areas of middle childhood children will be discussed with examples from recent studies.

Abstract:
The chapter gives an overview of the development of youth in two periods: middle childhood (6–11 years of age) and adolescence (12–18 years of age). During these two stages, major changes occur within the youth’s physical, social, and cognitive dimensions, with each stage having its own primary developmental task. For middle childhood, the main task is to acquire new physical, social, and cognitive skills. On the other hand, adolescents are tasked with sexuality and identity exploration. Within each stage, developmental aspects are discussed and understood in combination with Piaget’s theory of cognitive development and psychodynamic theories such as Freud’s psychosexual stages of development and Erickson’s psychosocial stages. It is important for social workers to learn about brain research, to understand brain functions and what the child experiences biologically and how they might affect the child’s development and mental health problems. Recommendations are given for the best intervention orientation in working with youth: relationship-oriented, empowerment-oriented, and collaboration-oriented practices.

Abstract:
Marijuana use has been linked to a wide variety of negative consequences, especially for those who initiate use in early adolescence and become daily or regular users as a teenager. If these negative consequences are to be avoided, prevention efforts must focus upstream on childhood and adolescent developmental periods before marijuana use is initiated or has become frequent. Upstream prevention targets factors that predict initiation and escalation of marijuana use, which are often called risk and protective factors. This chapter provides a review of current knowledge about risk and protective factors, with an emphasis on psychosocial variables specific to marijuana, differentiating predictors of marijuana use from predictors of other legal and illegal drugs when possible. The chapter also provides suggestions for future research in light of the rapidly changing legal and community conditions related to access, availability, and norms of marijuana use.

Abstract:
This chapter describes adolescence as a highly dynamic developmental period where health risks and outcomes are shaped by biological development and social influences. Previously neglected, the world’s 1.8 billion adolescents constitute a quarter of the population and are supported by the new Global Strategy on Women’s Children’s and Adolescents’ Health. Investing in building adolescent capabilities and assets yields a ‘triple dividend’ by improving the health of adolescents, reducing the burden of disease in adults, and improving the health and development of the next generation. Adolescent health profiles differ greatly between and within countries, reflecting different social, educational, economic, cultural, and technological opportunities and risks; the focus of required investments must therefore match different needs. Investments extend from actions directed towards conspicuous health problems (e.g. HIV, asthma, anxiety) to emergent health risks (e.g. tobacco smoking), to broader social determinants (e.g. quality schooling, avoidance of child marriage).

Abstract:
Adolescence is a critical period of development which can be affected by the initiation and escalation of marijuana use. Examining risk factors of marijuana misuse among adolescents is a public health priority. Previous research examining depression and anxiety as risk factors for marijuana use among young adults is mixed. Some studies found a positive relationship between mental health symptoms and marijuana use, while other studies have found gender-specific relationships or no relationship at all. Despite this research, little is known regarding mental health symptoms and marijuana use amon

Abstract:
Adolescent marijuana use is a significant public health concern given that many individuals first begin using during this developmental period and an earlier age of onset is prospectively associated with numerous marijuana misuse outcomes. The outbreak of COVID-19 has resulted in stay-at-home orders and social distancing guidelines across the United States. For many adolescents, these orders resulted in a number of changes that could alter one’s marijuana use including changes to marijuana availability, parental supervision, amount of free time, and stress levels. Distal radius and carpal fractures in children and adolescent account for approximately 25% of all pediatric fractures [1]. For the age distribution, 5 to 14 years olds group comprised largest proportion (26%) of all hand and forearm fractures than other age groups. Radius and/or ulna fractures took up the largest proportion of fractures (32.9%) in age group 5 to 14 years old. A population-based study revealed that the incidence rate of forearm fractures in boys and girls aged 5 to 14 years increased dramatically. In particular, the age group 10 to 14 has the highest increase in the period fro

Fetal intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) results in increased placental resistance to blood flow, fetal hypertension and increased pulsatility [1]. These hemodynamic changes have been shown to lead to vascular remodeling in adolescents and adults [2, 3] but have received little study of its effect during this critical period of vascular formation. Epidemiological studies link IUGR to cardiovascular disease in adulthood [4], but the reason for this is not clearly understood. Here, we examine a large elastic artery for developmental alterations under hypertensive conditions. We hypothesize t
