SPINELLI, SEBASTIANO MAURO. "The use of optical coherence for instrumentation devoted to CMB experiments." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10281/7884.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis discusses the application of the concept of optical coherence to novel instrumentation dedicated to the study of CMB. The complex degree of mutual coherence is used to describe the performances of QUBIC (Q and U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology, http://www.qubic.org). An adding, single baseline, interferometer prototype, working in the WR10 waveguide band, has been tested to investigate the basic properties of mm-wavelength bolometric interferometry in a mm-wave laboratory. Moreover the performances of the optical combiner of the final instrument are investigated. The correct estimator (complex degree of mutual coherence) is defined and a simulation machine in ZEMAX to test systems is implemented and tested on a suitable system. Last part of the thesis focuses on the optical design of a Martin Pupplet Fourier transform spectrometer (where the complex degree of self coherence is measured) for the SAGACE ASI mission. A double coupled spectrometer is proposed, in order to increase its sensitivity compared to existing similar instruments, where half of the power is rejected.

Scott, Priscilla. "'With heart and voice ever devoted to the cause' : women in the Gaelic Movement, 1886-1914." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/9913.

Full text
Abstract:
The Gaelic movement was the general term used in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to refer to a range of diverse but interconnected activity in support of the Gaelic language and culture in Scotland, embracing educational, literary, musical and scholarly aspects. Accounts of the Gaelic cultural landscape at this time tend to focus on the leading male figures; the presence and participation of women has been largely overlooked and a number of women who were prominent and significant participants in the Gaelic movement have slipped into the shadows or disappeared completely. This study aims to reconfigure this view to foreground the contribution of women and to understand the complex dynamics of the Gaelic movement from the perspectives of the women involved. While the study importantly highlights certain individual women, the biographical focus is used as a means to uncover lesser-known women and the female friendships and networks in which they moved, as well as to explore their relationship and interaction with prominent male figures and other interconnected social groupings within the Gaelic movement and wider Pan-Celtic and Celtic Revival circles. The study examines and discusses the participation, contribution and influence of a number of women across a spectrum of Gaelic cultural activities, taking into account socio-historical, literary and cultural aspects and using gender as an analytical lens through which to examine the different challenges and tensions that individual women negotiated in a period of social and cultural change. The study shows that a number of women were actively involved with the Gaelic movement in the period between the passing of The Crofting Act and the start of the Great War; that they were innovative, ambitious and wide-ranging in their participation; and that they saw the accessibility of the Gaelic cultural sphere as an opportunity to progress both their individual aspirations as women as well as their support for the Gaelic language and culture.

Wu, Lin. "Contribution to spatial bias mitigation in interferometric radiometers devoted to Earth observation : application to the SMOS mission." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/144655.

Full text
Abstract:
This work has been undertaken within the frame of the FPI scholarship BES-2009-028505 of 30/07/2009, by the "Secretario de Estado de Investigación del Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación", related to the project TEC2008-06764-C02-01 (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya) titled "Advanced concepts on active and passive microwave remote sensing: technology and applications". In a more general scope, this thesis is related to the Remote Sensing Laboratory (Signal Theory & Communication Department, UPC) on-going activities, within the SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) mission by the European Space Agency (ESA). These activities have been organized to provide original advances in the following four main topics: 1) SMOS system performance assessment. SMOS commissioning phase finalized in May 2010 providing preliminary performance results. Therefore, as a first step in this work, radiometric sensitivity and spatial bias (systematic spatial errors) have been reviewed and assessed. To achieve this, new techniques have been developed to better compare SMOS images to ground truth targets. SMOS ocean views have been selected as the best option since provide smooth brightness temperature distributions for which accurate models are available. 2) Spatial bias mitigation techniques. Spatial bias was a major issue in SMOS first images since it was larger than expected. In order to identify the dominant sources of spatial bias, each potential source of error, at calibration level, has been simulatedand compared tomeasured SMOS error patterns. 3) Spatial bias in the EAF-FoV. Whereas SMOS performance in the alias free FoV was well within mission requirements, this issue was especially important for the four polarimetric temperatures in the extended regions. This issuehas been addressed in two ways. First a new approach has been developed to systematically analyze spatial bias by splitting SMOS EAF-FoV into different regions of interest. Also, the pixels have been arranged per angle of incidence. Secondly, the impact in each region of calibration errors and different image reconstruction has been addressed. 4) Spatial bias in full-pol measurement. The main objective of this work has been achieved by developing, implementing and validating a SMOS full-pol G-matrix image reconstruction procedure that resulted into significantly improved polarimetric images. This tool allowed a comprehensive assessment of the two error contributions that have been identified as the main sources of residual spatial bias: the so-called floor error and antenna pattern uncertainty. Finally, as a validation of the quality of SMOS Level 1 fully polarimetric data that has been achieved, the last chapter of this work has been devoted to provide operational Faraday rotation retrievals in a per snap-shot basis.

Abstract:
The variability of soil moisture and ocean salinity controls the continuous exchange of water between the oceans, the atmosphere and the land. Therefore, the accurate and periodic measurements of these geophysical variables are paramount to improve the climate change prediction and extreme-event forecasting. However, until very recently, global measurements of these parameters with a suitable spatial and temporal resolution have not been available. Real aperture radiometers have been frequently used for Earth observation applications. Nevertheless, for space-borne sensors at a low Earth orbit, the requirements on spatial resolution and coverage, at the operating frequencies (L-band), would require an unfeasibly large antenna. Conversely, synthetic aperture radiometry achieves high resolution using an array of small antennas, becoming a sound alternative to real aperture radiometry at low microwave frequencies. The ESA's SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) mission, successfully launched on November 2009, is the first mission ever attempted to frequently and globally measure soil moisture over the continents and sea surface salinity over the oceans. The single payload of the mission, the MIRAS (Microwave Imaging Radiometer by Aperture Synthesis) instrument, is the first spaceborne L-band two dimensional synthetic aperture radiometer. This completely new type of instrument implies a technological challenge, for which the development of a detailed error model denition, dedicated calibration and image reconstruction algorithms have been needed. The calibration of MIRAS tackles all activities devoted to retrieve the SMOS scientic products from raw data measurements with the accuracy required by the scientic community. Characterization activities of the MIRAS instrument, mainly performed prior to the beginning of the in-orbit operation, have been required to develop and test the calibration activities. Within the framework of the SMOS mission, this Ph.D. Thesis is focused on the characterization of the interferometric radiometers devoted to Earth observation. The main contributions of this Thesis, which are directly related to the MIRAS payload performance assessment, are: (i) the denition of tests for the characterization campaigns, data processing methods and success criteria and (ii) the development of calibration algorithms and tools to fine-tune the instrument in order to fully achieve the system requirements and therefore the scientific requierements of the mission. Most of the work has been done in the framework of the MIRAS/SMOS Pre-Commissioning Phase activities and it has been completed in the framework of the Commissioning Phase preparatory work. Calibration tools and techniques developed for the MIRAS ground characterization have been adapted to fulfill in-orbit instrument characterization during the first months of the Commissioning Phase and contributed to the development and consolidation of the SMOS operational level-1 processing.

Abstract:
Résumé indisponible
This PhD work is dedicated to investigate potentialities of phthalocyanines materials to realize a Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) sensor for Benzene, Toluene and Xylenes (BTX) detection in air. The goal is to develop a sensor-microsystem capable of measuring BTX concentrations quantitatively below the environmental guidelines with sufficient accuracy. To achieve these objectives, our strategies mainly focused on experimental works encompassing sensors realization, sensing material characterizations, development of gas-testing facility and sensor testing for different target gases. One of the main aims is to identify most appropriate phthalocyanine material for sensor development. After comparative sensing studies, tert-butyl-copper phthalocyanine based QCM device is found as most sensitive and detail metrological characteristics are further investigated. Results show repeatable, reversible and high magnitude of response, low response and recovery times, sub-ppm range detection limit, high resolutions and combined selectivity of BTX gases among common atmospheric pollutants. Special focus is given to understand the gas/material interactions which are achieved by (a) XRD and SEM characterizations of sensing layers, (b) formalization of a two-step adsorption model and (c) assessing extent of diffusion of target gas in sensing layer. At last, possible ageing of sensor and suitable storage conditions to prevent such effect are investigated

Jacqmin, Hermance. "Coherent combining of few-cycle pulses for the next generation of Terawatt-class laser sources devoted to attosecond physics." Thesis, Université Paris-Saclay (ComUE), 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016SACLX064/document.

Abstract:
The framework of this thesis is the design and development of a TW-class, high-repetition rate, CEP-stabilized, few-cycle laser system devoted to attosecond physics. Few-cycle pulses includes only a few oscillations of the carrier wave (duration about 5 fs for 800nm central wavelength) and are not directly available at the output of typical femtosecond sources. One of the most popular techniques used for producing such pulses with high spatial quality is nonlinear spectral broadening in a gas-filled hollow-core fiber followed by temporal compression with chirped mirrors. However, as the input pulse energy approaches the milliJoule level, both the transmission and stability of hollow fiber compressors rapidly drop with the onset of self-focusing and ionization. A way of overcoming this limitation is to divide the input pulse into several lower energy replicas that can be subsequently recombined after independent spectral broadening in the fiber. In this thesis, the passive coherent combining of millijoule energy laser pulses down to few-cycle duration in a gas-filled hollow fiber is demonstrated for the first time. High combining efficiency is achieved by using carefully oriented calcite plates for temporal pulse division and recombination. Carrier-envelope phase (CEP)- stable, 6-fs, 800-nm pulses with more than 0.6 mJ energy were routinely generated in the case of twofold division and recombination. A detailed theoretical and experimental analysis of this temporal multiplexing technique is proposed to explain the conditions required for producing few-cycle pulses with high fidelity. In particular, an interferometric method for measuring the relative spectral phase between two replicas is demonstrated. This gives a measure of the phase mismatch in the combining plate, as well as that induced by eventual cross-phase modulation or ionization during propagation in the fiber. The effects degrading the combining process, as polarization change or nonlinear interactions between pulse replicas are analyzed in details. A method is proposed to overcome these limitations, even in the critical case of fourfold pulse division and combination

Improvisation in dance, body awareness practices and free course poetic writing, which gathered the images emerged, were parts of the process. In the short film, the theme of the soul's journey in search of a return to the Divine Presence, true source of Living Water, works together with the assumption of the creative body, like domus 4 of the Heart of God in time. In the theoretical incursions, the theme of the cross and redemption - of the human look, of the produced images, of the imagination - precedes and illuminates the realization. The web of Instants Fertile of Meaning, poetic, divine, in image and sound, revealed to the pious eyes of soul-and-heart, formed the core of the research.
Mestrado
Mestre em Multimeios

Abstract:
The cult of Lord of the Miracles takes place every October in Lima with an extraordinary attendance and it renovates on the practice of thousands of devotes around the world. Within a larger study of the history of this symbol from XVII century, I will follow him from his colonial institutionalization (1771) to his republican trajectory in order to explore how his mayor meanings were made up: a mestizanational identity and an afrodescendent tradition. Methodologically, I will use the approach of historic anthropology, with ethnographic and archive sources and with an anthropological-historical point of view. In this way, I will demonstrate how the cult definition as “black practice that has won white people” can summarize the itinerary of that symbol on two levels: in terms of his tricentenary historical process and in terms of representations about that process.

The treatment includes changes in eating habits and increment of physical activity. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of obesity and physical activity in pregnant women suffered from gestational diabetes mellitus. In epidemiological case-control study, were evaluated 23 pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDMG) and 23 normoglycemic pregnant women (CG), and 17.4% were black (GDMG 21.7% and 13% CG), 13% smokers (GDMG 13% and 13% CG) and 39.1% nulliparous (GDMG 26.1% and 52.2% CG). The average age of the sample was 30.3 ± 5.4 years (GDMG 31.3 ± 4.7 and CG 29.2 ± 5.9 years) and body mass index was 30.6 ± 7.5 kg/m2 (GDMG 34.29 ± 7.70 and CG 27.02 ± 5.27 kg/m2). The women were selected from public maternities and public clinics in the city of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina. The level of physical activity in sport / exercise, transportation / mobility, housework, occupational, leisure and care for others, referring to the 20 first weeks of pregnancy, was quantified through the application of physical activity questionnaire for pregnant women (PAQPW) coming from the Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire (PPAQ). The fields related to housework (OR = 1.06, 95% CI: 1.02 to 1.11, p = 0.01) and the time devoted to watching television (OR = 1.07, 95% CI: 1 0.02 to 1, 14, p = 0.01), albeit with a significant statistical difference, in practice was deemed irrelevant by the negligible difference, as those related to physical activity, sport / exercise, occupational activities, caring for others, leisure, transportation and movement did not present significant association with risk of GDM. Only BMI above 30 kg/m2 increased substantially the risk of pregnant women to acquire GDM (OR = 6.86, 95% CI: 2.69 to 25.17, p = 0.01). The women in both groups had low physical activity level of sport / exercise (GDMG 21.7% and 30.4% active GC), and the level of inactivity in both groups was also high.

Tucker, Luke Rohan. "Devotio Moderna: Confrontations with Scholastic, University Culture." Thesis, University of Sydney, 2021. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/24539.

Full text
Abstract:
The founding stories of the Devotio Moderna began with a book burning and explicit rejections of scholastic, university culture. Most scholars have either pitted the movement’s dimensions of pastoral care and teaching against each other as exclusive alternatives or have declined to treat the New Devout’s status as a culture of learning. However, if we are to take this mythos as essential to the movement, we must proceed from the outset that confrontations with scholastic, university culture lay at the heart of the Devotio Moderna. This thesis suggests that either above approach is inadequate and misreads the movement. Using Charles Taylor’s framework of the Social Imaginary, this thesis argues that the Devotio Moderna developed based on an Augustinian Imaginary, a sense deriving from Augustine and his medieval interlocutors. By the time of the Observant Century, this Augustinian Imaginary now stood in competition with the universitas, a competing Social Imaginary that the New Devout could not reconcile with their Augustinian Imaginary and therefore rejected. By articulating the Devotio Moderna’s daily habits of reading, writing, and prayer, this thesis argues that this conflict between the Devotio Moderna and scholastic, university culture loomed large in the movement’s imagination. By relocating the key issues in analysis of the Devotio Moderna, we see the difficulty of the historian writing within the institution that the New Devout opposed, but which ultimately supplanted the movement. This thesis is therefore significant as a repositioning of analysis of the Devotio Moderna as a movement in relation fundamentally to scholastic, university culture, and in being an articulation of the difficulty for the universitas’ distant descendant, the modern discipline of history, to understand a historical movement animated by an imaginary opposed to that which vivified, and continues to vivify, university culture.

Abstract:
In The Theology of Râmânuja, John Braisted Carman carefully examines the south Asian philosopher Râmânuja’s concepts of the Supreme Person, and the relational dynamics between the Supreme Person and the devotee. Carman sees in Râmânuja’s discussion of the master (úesî)/servant (úesa) relationship the most important understandings concerning the hierarchy between the Supreme Person and the devotee. Carmen argues that in this devotional relationship there is a point at which the distinction between the master and the servant is dissolved, and mutual dependence is revealed. This paper focuses on the point where the roles in the relationship between the divine and the devotee are reversed. In this reversal the master takes on the role of the servant and the servant the master. It is argued here that this role reversal is the action that illuminates the ultimate dissolution of the hierarchy that Râmânuja recognizes and results in spiritual empowerment for the devotee.

Rice, Charis. "Government communication in the devolved, power-sharing context of Northern Ireland." Thesis, Ulster University, 2014. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.625476.

Full text
Abstract:
This research analyses government communication within Northern Ireland. The central focus of the research is the roles and relationships of government communicators and journalists in the power-sharing post-conflict context of Northern Ireland, and how they can be located within broader debates about government communication in democratic societies. Research on government communication in complex institutional systems from a public relations perspective is limited, as is research on this topic in Northern Ireland. In-depth elite interviews were carried out with two kinds of government communicators, civil servant Government Information Officers (GIOs) and politically appointed Ministerial Special Advisers (SpAds), as well as political journalists working in Northern Ireland. This method enabled a comprehensive analysis of the government communication process. As with other political contexts, power and trust dynamics between these individuals are important in explicating how information is disseminated from government, and how it is managed between government and the media. The principal findings of this research are that the post-conflict environment, the consociational structure of government, and the antagonistic political culture in Northern Ireland, all impact on the flow of information from these professional groups into the public sphere. As a result, Northern Ireland's public sphere is characterised not just by the usual contest between government communicators and journalists over political stories, but also by competition across and within departments. Government-media interactions are also shaped by the legacy of conflict. These issues impact detrimentally on GIOs' abilities to communicate a cohesive and transparent government message to the public. This thesis contributes to our knowledge of government communication in contemporary societies by demonstrating the importance of relationships between communication elites in this process. It also illuminates the particular issues which a consociational system and post-conflict context produce for government communication, thereby addressing the wider democratic implications of government communication for a post-conflict society.

Abstract:
The research to be presented focuses on the experience of devotion to Nossa Senhora Aparecida. Thus, since 2010, I do fieldwork in Aparecida do Norte, a city in São Paulo, with devotees from many places in the country, watching how they make relation with Santa Aparecida, making promises, pilgrimages. So, I divided my research into two parts, which are, however, interrelated. In the first part: an ethnography of a pilgrimage on foot (100km) from São José dos Campos until Aparecida which I followed. The second part deals with the movement of objects and words of devotion that have agency and transform worlds and heal people. In \"Essay on the promise\", I have Walter Benjamin, Victor Turner, Marcel Mauss like the guiding classical authors. I try to understand the promise far beyond a direct way of the formula: give, receive and give back.\" It means that I do reflections which make me think that between these transformers verbs and actions, there are winks, details, mosaics and many trinkets and numerous offal of things, so it was need to look for cracks, interstices, twilight points. So, I return my gaze to the promise while circulation, movement, passing and waiting. The promise or grace do not consist in an end in itself, what most absorbed me in the field were swirls, paths and movements and all circulations of devotees, objects, words of faith and sacrifice. The movement is the engine of promise, which only is established the extent that there are intimate relationships between Nossa Senhora Aparecida and his devotees. Thus, my work is about the experience of devotion, sensitive experience, with many photographs, music, storytellers, friends and the road, because the road crossing and the route is longer but more accurate for those who walk with faith. And it was on the road I started to envision what \"terrible good-spirits protect me\", \"I do not know almost nothing. But I suspect a lot\". But, be warned, this is an ethnography, and I \"believe and do not believe. Has thing and thing...\" (João Guimarães Rosa, \"Grande Sertão: Veredas\", Rio de Janeiro: Nova Fronteira, 2001).

Novinskey, Christina. "Determining policy priorities in a devolved health system : an analytical framework." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2015. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/3513/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation develops an analytical framework for studying the effects of health system devolution on the health policymaking process and policy choices made by subnational governments. It addresses two research questions: (1) How does devolution change the structure and agency of the health policymaking process? (2) What is the resulting impact on health policy priorities? A critical literature review covers decentralization, devolution, and interest-based approaches for analysing the policymaking process, structure and agency. An analytical framework for uppermiddle and high-income countries is constructed by integrating (i) a modified version of Bossert’s decision-space approach for decentralized health systems; (ii) BlomHansen’s combined policy network and rational-choice institutionalist approach, which analyses the intergovernmental relations within the national health policymaking environment; and (iii) an original conceptualisation and analysis of informal intergovernmental policymaking at the subnational government level. Empirical evaluation uses information on Spain’s 2001 health system devolution reform, focusing on the regional cases of Extremadura and Madrid. Primary data from stakeholder interviews and secondary data are analysed primarily using qualitative, case study and content analysis methods. The decision space granted to regional governments in Spain is examined before and after the reform, developing a decision-space map for Extremadura and Madrid and showing the shifts in the range of choice allowed for each health system function over time. Next, the compositions of the national and subnational health policy networks are determined for before and after devolution, and the policy priorities for each are estimated ex ante. Finally, the dissertation analyses the ex post priorities and results of health policy decisions made by Spain, Extremadura and Madrid in the period after devolution. Overall results show that the analytical framework is only partially successful in anticipating health policy priorities. Suggestions for improving the framework are proposed, and policy implications and lessons are drawn from the case studies.

_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The present work makes an analysis of the forms of representation of religious figures in Brazilian literature. It has as its corpus three well known naturalists works — The Mulatto (1881), by Aluísio Azevedo; The Man (1887), also written by Azevedo, and Morbus: pathologic novel (1898), by Faria Neves Sobrinho — the main intention of these works was to examine the configuration of elements of these symbolic characters, in the physical, psychological and collective aspects. As a theoretical resource we based this work on the thoughts of the philosopher Michel Foucault, particularly in his conception of the body, together with the contributions of Erwin Goffman, Pierre Bourdieu, Max Weber, Auguste Comte, Pierre Laffite, and medical texts produced in the course of the nineteenth century. We observe that the process of stigmatization of these characters, within the positivist and rationalist logic, strengthened the opposition of theology and metaphysics as systems of thought, besides expressing the historical circumstances of nineteenth-century in Brazil, a period marked by a great resistance to the monarchy as well as to the Catholic Church. Thus, priests, devotees and devout figures are represented as anachronistic, having a sick or unproper corporeality, clear expressions of the retrogression of the social order that they represent. At last, we conclude that the naturalistic literature of the country, while appropriating the scientific character in which the literary school was qualified, gave a rational tone to its speech, particularly manifested in the setting of religious characters, thereby demonstrating its militant and reformer commitment.

Abstract:
Abstract: This is a qualitative studie about how devotees to the Guru Mata Amritananda Mayi relate to her and how that changes through time. The material has been collected through five interviews and through participant observation in ”Ammas” ashram Amritapuri in Kerala, south of India. The result showed that the devotees relate to Amma as a mother in some aspects and as a ”teacher” in other aspects, but they all have gained hundred percent trust for her. They all related to her different in the beginning as a devotee than after some years with her which shows that Amma could work as a transitionalobject for the devotees. The question about whether the devotees progress and cultivate”selfactivity” after this process could be answered with both yes and no. The devotees whom was interviewed seemed to have cultivated a lot more ”selfactivity” than the devotees that was observed during the time in the ashram and whom hadn't been following Amma as long time as the interviewees.

Card, Christopher J. "Examination of the Effect of Child Abuse Case Characteristics on the Time a Caseworker Devotes to a Case." Scholar Commons, 2010. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/3567.

Full text
Abstract:
This study used an explanatory research model that determined the effect on caseworker time and therefore workload caused by specific characteristics of cases assigned after the child abuse investigation is complete. The purpose of this study was to explain the relationship between child protection case characteristics and the time an assigned caseworker devotes to a case. With this knowledge an informed methodology to assess the current workload of a caseworker could be used to assure that the caseworker is able to successfully complete the tasks required for each child assigned. Further, the knowledge of the amount of time spent on a case with specific characteristics allows supervisors to assess and properly assign cases. Utilizing focus groups and a secondary data analysis of the Florida State Automated Child Welfare Service Information System (SACWSIS) the case characteristics of race/ethnicity, living arrangement, placement, removal and prior removal were found to significantly affect caseworker time spent on a case. Additionally, the case characteristics of gender, age, type of maltreatment, and disability were not found to affect caseworker time spent on a case.

Bataille (1987) has established a similarity between the act erotic and the sacrificial. The loving act, according to him, not least disintegrates the being that sacrificer to slay his victim. The field of eroticism becomes the field of violence and violation. The female part, as victim, is dissolved and the male part takes the place of the sacrificer. Since Hilda Hilst’s poetic scrutinizes the Sacred (COELHO, 1993), the relationship between eroticism and sacrifice is a privileged way of reading for this poetry. Abstract:
Known as a criminal, man of no mercy, a blood kille , monster and even as the own encarnation of the devil, Virgulino Ferreira da Silva, marked the History of the northeast region of Brazil and even the brasilian one, with his long twenty runaway years and crimes through the northeast sertão region of Brazil. This work shows what few people know and just a few researchers dedicated themselves to unveil: The Cangaceiro Lampião, whom altogether with the other members of his group, developed the other side of the existence as a being the issue of his religiosity. As most of the northeast people who practise the so called popular catholicism, Lampião, kept his relationship with angels and saintmen, he prayed every day and had his beliefs in ocult forces and in dreams. He never tried to get away with the rules on which he was upbrought since he was a kid, which were imposed by his mother and grandmother, who were the responsilble ones for his religious education. He was devoted for some saintmen, in special Hail Mary of Conception (Nossa Senhora da Conceição). He had the habit of saying last minute catholic masses along with his partners, who are known as cangaceiro, and who lived under his laws. That worked as a respect sign and served to diminish the possible sufferings of the soul that could float over them. Then, the question of religiosity inside the cangaço turns into a fundamental thing to enrich the thematic in which, now and then, the interested ones would have to face with new works. However, they do not mention exclusively the question of the religious life of the group or as known the gang. many works about the cangaço have been published, and especially about Lampião, being one more this essay was written with the purpose of contributing with the expanding of the view about the cangaço phenomenon, in special using the elements of the Religious Sciences to understand a little more about the religious life of Lampíão and also of his partners, the cangaceiros who lived under his orbit and command.
