Abstract:
Application of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) methodologies can be beneficial to industries involved in the design and development of products. Improper design decisions are responsible for higher manufacturing cost for a product. Thus it is important to include DFMA by combining principles of both DFM and DFA principle early in the design process. This paper presents a case study of manufacture and assembly costs estimation during the design phase of washing machine and which is to be manufactured in company located in India, and intends to make this economically feasible. Solidworks and Solidview software tool were used to generate CAD models which were further analysed using DFMA software tool. The result obtained was accepted by industry and match with the market value of washing machine.

Abstract:
DL-alpha-Difluoromethylarginine (DFMA) is an enzyme-activated irreversible inhibitor of arginine decarboxylase (ADC) in vitro. DFMA has also been shown to inhibit ADC activities in a variety of plants and bacteria in vivo. However, we questioned the specificity of this inhibitor for ADC in tobacco ovary tissues, since ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity was strongly inhibited as well. We now show that [3,4-3H]DFMA is metabolized to DL-alpha-difluoromethyl[3,4-3H]ornithine [(3,4-3H]DFMO), the analogous mechanism-based inhibitor of ODC, by tobacco tissues in vivo. Both tobacco and mammalian (mouse, bovine) arginases (EC 3.5.3.1) hydrolyse DFMA to DFMO in vitro, suggesting a role for this enzyme in mediating the indirect inhibition of ODC by DFMA in tobacco. These results suggest that DFMA may have other effects, in addition to the inhibition of ADC, in tissues containing high arginase activities. The recent development of potent agmatine-based ADC inhibitors should permit selective inhibition of ADC, rather than ODC, in such tissues, since agmatine is not a substrate for arginase.

Abstract:
Polyamine, putrescine, spermidine, and spermine contents were determined during endodormancy in the buds of low-chilling-requiring `Anna' apples (Malus domestics Borkh.). Putrescine, spermidine, and spermine contents increased greatly in buds when their chilling requirement was satisfied. Polyamine biosynthetic inhibitors α -difluoromethylarginine (DFMA) or α -difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) reduced bud break and bud growth in concert with decreased polyamine titers. DFMO or DFMA did not inhibit bud break when it was applied to buds after they received the full chilling requirement. DFMO was more inhibitory than DFMA. The polyamine requirement was much higher for bud growth and bud development than during differentiation and bud break.

Abstract:
Three polyamine biosynthesis inhibitors, α-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO), α-difluoromethylarginine (DFMA), and α-methylornithine (MeOrn), alone and in combination with CaCl2, were tested for their ability to reduce in vitro growth and soft rot development in apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) fruit caused by Botrytis cinerea Pers.:Fr. and Penicillium expansum Link. All three inhibitors reduced the in vitro growth of the pathogens. Calcium had no effect on fungal growth in vitro. Pressure infiltration of millimolar concentrations of DFMO or DFMA or 25 g·L-1 CaCl2 solutions into apples reduced subsequent soft rot development by B. cinerea and P. expansum >40%. A combination treatment of Ca and DFMO or DFMA reduced decay >67%. Treatment of apples with MeOrn was less effective at inhibiting decay development. None of the inhibitors affected polyamine levels in apple cortical tissues. Some injury to the fruit surface was observed with Ca treatments. Fruit treated with Ca and any of the inhibitors were less firm than those treated with Ca alone. Specific polyamine biosynthesis inhibitors in combination with Ca may prove useful in reducing postharvest decay in apples.

Pengembangan produk harus memikirkan detail baik pemilihan material, proses produksi, proses perkitan, sampai pada bagaimana perawatan produk setelah diterima konsumen. Semua menjai satu proses panjang menuju keberlanjutan hidup produk. The fluoroacrylate copolymer latexes (Poly (BA-MMA-DFMA) latex) with a fluorinated shell were successfully synthesized by semi-continuous seeded emulsion polymerization. The chemical structure of the latex was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and 1H-NMR analysis. Glass transition temperatures (Tg) of Poly (BA-MMA-DFMA) latex were confirmed by DSC analysis. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed the microstructure of Poly (BA-MMA-DFMA) latex. The water absorption ratio and the water contact angle (WCA) of films were studied. Results showed the Poly (BA-MMA-DFMA) latex had two distinct Tg and exhibited core-shell structure. Moreover, Poly (BA-MMA-DFMA) film with 15wt% DFMA can exhibit lower water absorption ratio and higher contact angle.

Abstract:
Manufacturing companies are turning increasingly to rapid prototyping (RP) to perform pre-assembly testing and improve the quality of the final product. Manufacturers also have begun to complement their RP practices using design for manufacture and assembly methodology. Design for assembly lowers the complexity of products through parts reduction and enables manufacturers to quantify assembly times and costs. Users are prompted to consider each part and decide if it must be separate from others in the assembly, leading to systematic simplification of design. The four approaches by which design for manufacturer (DFMA) software analyzes product configurations incorporate design for assembly, design for manufacture, design for service, and design for environment. Using design for assembly can reduce the number of parts in the product, but can increase the complexity of the parts that remain. Rapid prototyping combined with DFMA tools not only can determine if a product will perform its desired functions. According to an expert, when early manufacturing process planning is performed using DFMA and RP, it is synergistic.

Abstract:
The process of product development strengthens as a reason for competitiveness, using sundry optimisation methods, e.g. Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA). Simulating allows engineers or managers to obtain a systemic perspective of how local changes will affect the overall performance over the entire production system, obtaining thus its optimisation. In this study, we aimed at assessing both how DFMA can be integrated with computer simulation and the benefits from the alternatives identified by such method during production and assembly. Using as object of study the electronic voting machine printer, we identified options to improve design from principles of DFMA. The benefits are: reduction in assembly time and costs. As research method we used simulation, in which data were obtained by using direct observations, document analysis, and interviews with incumbents and users. Five models were composed to represent the current assembly process and two future models before applying amendments proposed by DFMA. The results show how effective the integration is with the DFMA simulation.

Abstract:
To get all outstanding mechanical properties from ultra-high strength steel (UHSS) transformed into a lightweight and durable product, a comprehensive design process must be performed. The general DFMA method has been extended to get good design solutions with limited designer resources and within a relative short time period. Key steps of the extended DFMA design process are innovative brainstorming, the agile utilization of the optimization software, the heavy use of finite element analysis and fast design iteration. In this paper, the modified DFMA design method is described step by step. This method has been successfully used in the design process of the small lightweight rally car frame. The design process of the rally car is introduced as a case example of implementation of the extended DFMA.

Abstract:
Nanosilica-modified, fluorine-containing polyacrylate hybrid coating materials, consisting of dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (DFMA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate (2-EHA), 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate (KH-570), and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), are synthesized successfully by free radical polymerization and the sol–gel process. It is revealed that the content of the fluorine-containing polyacrylate hybrid coating materials from DFMA monomers significantly improves the properties of the films. The polyacrylate coating film prepared with a weight ratio of DFMA/MMA at 1:5 exhibits the largest water contact angle of 105.4°, which demonstrates that DFMA can effectively improve the hydrophobicity of the coating film. Moreover, the silicon coupling agent (KH-570) is used to graft silica with acrylate. Spherical in shape, the surface morphology of the nanohybrid film exhibits a core–shell structure, which increases the surface roughness and enhances the hydrophobic properties. The as-prepared fluorine-containing nanohybrid silica polyacrylate film possesses a high transmittance of 89–97% in the visible light region, indicating its potential as a very attractive solution in many practical areas.

The increasing need for bridge infrastructure in Indonesia requires an efficient and lean construction process. The aim of this research to evaluate the use of precast concrete elements on bridges based on the Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) criteria. DfMA is a principle design that considers the process of manufacture and assembly components based on the following criteria, i.e., simplificity of design, number of components, standardization on elements or material and ease of handling. Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) is used to determine the weights for each criteria. Data were collected through observations on a bridge project, interviews with engineers and questionnaires. A typical girder and slab bridge is used as an object for DfMA-based evaluation. The results of evaluation design of prefabricated components to recommend some that are suitable for use in bridge construction. The last case study was taken to one of the bridge construction projects on the newly completed highway is done to identify the prefabricated components used. Bridge analysis and re-design are carried out with the DfMA concept, including costs incurred, resource scheduling and discussions of project risk. The results of analysis with simulation design giving efficiency 28,83% simplificity of design; 8,74% number of components and standardization on elements or materials; 25% ease of handling; 51,53% assembly time; 23,39% cost of work and 18,87% duration time. Finally, the level of risk of work received such as weather conditions and work safety is reduced. In closing, recommendations were given for further DfMA development.

Abstract:
This paper presents the comparative study of design efficiency of two different brands of products, performing the same function using the Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) method. The study aims to compare the products on the relative design efficiency. The DFMA method was used as it is a well-established technique for improving the efficiency of the product leading to minimizing production costs. It also shortens product development time by reducing the number of components in a product. The study used two different brands of dry iron as a case study. The result shows that the percentage of the design efficiency of dry iron A is 8.82%, whereas it is 10.34% of dry iron B. Thus, the dry iron B is much better as compared to A in term of its assembly operation and design efficiency. Therefore, the dry iron B is greener than dry iron A. Furthermore, a redesign of dry iron B was proposed and analyzed for the internal validation. The DFMA analysis result shows that the percentage of design efficiency of a new conceptual design of dry iron B increased to 18.08%. The application of the DFMA method to enhance the eco-friendliness of a product has been proven to be highly useful in design work.

Abstract:
Design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) is an important part of the future of the construction industry due to the promise of speed of project delivery, quality control, worker safety, and waste minimization onsite via the purposeful design for manufacture and assembly offsite. However, the adoption of DfMA in Australia has been slow. This paper investigates the barriers prohibiting widespread uptake and how digital construction will be a catalyst for improving use on commercial-scale projects. A total of six leading experts were interviewed to elicit their opinions, and seven recent case studies of high-rise modular apartment and hotel buildings constructed by Hickory were cross-referenced as evidence of DfMA capability. The experts suggested that the reasons for slow adoption in Australia were community mindset, government regulations and incentives, planning and building codes, unionization and business politics, finance, and supply chain management. The case studies suggest that compatible building type and transportation distance are also factors. These barriers can be addressed by the clever integration of building information modelling tools with lean construction processes as part of a proposed strategy leading to smarter (more productive) and better (more sustainable) outcomes predicated on growth in digital construction practices. The paper concludes with a proposed framework for change that conceptualizes the ‘ecosystem’ needed to support widespread DfMA in the Australian context, including the paradigm shift from building to manufacturing/assembly, the displacement of workers from onsite to offsite activity, and the expansion of interdisciplinary design and construct collaboration.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the feeding of direct fed microbials (DFMs) on fecal shedding of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in naturally infected cattle (experiment I) and on Salmonella in the feces and peripheral lymph nodes (PLNs) of experimentally infected cattle (experiment II). Thirty cattle, 10 per treatment, were used in each experiment. Treatments in experiment I consisted of a control (lactose carrier only); DFM1, a 1:1 ratio of Enterococcus faecium and Lactobacillus animalis; and DFM2, a 1:1 ratio of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Pediococcus acidilactici. In Experiment II, DFM1 was replaced with DFM3, a 1:2 ratio of Lactobacillus reuteri and other Lactobacillus strains. Additives were mixed in water and applied as a top-dressing to each pen's daily ration for 50 days. Approximately half-way through each experiment, the DFM concentration was doubled for the remainder of the study. Fecal samples were collected throughout experiment I and cultured for E. coli O157:H7. Cattle in experiment II were inoculated intradermally with Salmonella Montevideo on days 32, 37, and 42 and then necropsied on days 49 and 50 (five cattle per treatment on each day). Innate immune function was assessed on days 29, 49, and 50. In experiment I, fecal concentration and prevalence of E. coli O157:H7 were not different (P > 0.10) nor was there an effect (P = 0.95) on the percentage of super shedders (cattle shedding ≥3.0 log CFU/g of feces). In experiment II, no treatment differences (P > 0.05) were observed for Salmonella in the PLNs except for the inguinal nodes, which had a significantly lower Salmonella prevalence in DFM-supplemented cattle than in the controls. Immune function, as measured by monocyte nitric oxide production and neutrophil oxidative burst, was decreased (P < 0.05) in the DFM treatment groups. Although results of this research indicate little to no effect of these DFMs on E. coli O157:H7 or Salmonella in cattle, an increase in the duration of administration to that similar to what is used for commercial cattle might elicit treatment differences. Abstract:
When oil fields become old, the proportion of water in crude oil will get higher and higher. Using a traditional bulk separator to extract the water from crude oil has many disadvantages: e.g. high pressure loss, low separation speed, heavy equipment and sensitive to direction. Caltec Ltd. has developed Wx-12, an innovative separator for the oil and gas industry. The device has been tested on offshore platforms and has shown high performance. Currently however, the manufacturing cost of the device is too high making it unlikely to be accepted by market. This project first used QFD to transform the user requirements of Wx-12 into engineering specifications. Then DFA & DFM methods were applied to Wx-12 in order to make it compact and reduce the manufacturing cost. An alternative design for Wx-12 unit was generated according to the results from QFD, DFA and DFM. Alternative materials were also considered to support the alternative designs. Finally alternative designs and alternative materials were verified with the engineers from Caltec Ltd..

Abstract:
The main goal of this study is to explore the adoption of a design for manufacturing and assembly (DfMA) and building information management (BIM) approach during the whole lifecycle of assets. This approach aims to tackle issues inherent in the design of traditional construction methods, such as low productivity and quality, poor predictability and building performance, and energy use, through the implementation of a BIM library of off-site components. In recent years, a renewed interest has been directed to the attempt to provide solutions to these urgent problems through the adoption of new advancements in technologies. However, while there are studies focussing on a BIM-DfMA approach, there is a lack of research regarding how this approach should be adopted during the whole lifecycle of the assets. Furthermore, to the best of our knowledge, defining an efficient way of developing a component-based BIM object library has not yet been included in any of the available studies. A mixed methodology approach has been used in this research. A conceptual framework was developed as the result of an extensive literature review to investigate new advancements in the AEC sector. Following the literature review, the framework was tested and validated through a case study based on the production and adoption of a BIM library of off-site components at the design stage of an asset. The architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry has recognised the necessity of a new approach that helps to resolve the well-known issues presented in traditional methods of construction. The conceptual framework and case study proposed presents a valuable new method of construction that support the implementation of a BIM and DfMA approach, highlighting their benefits. This framework has been created using many valuable and reliable sources of information. The result of this research supports the idea of a novel new construction method that focuses on a manufacturing-digital-driven industry, with the use of DfMA in a BIM-integrated approach. This novel method will add significance and be beneficial for a wide range of aspects in the construction sector, contributing to the theoretical and practical domain.

Abstract:
Off-site construction (OSC) offers a promising means to improve the efficiency of construction projects. However, the lack of experience and knowledge regarding its use results in errors in design owing to conflicts and omissions of considerations for OSC projects. To mitigate these problems, the design for manufacturing and assembly (DfMA) is widely used to include the considerations in the OSC design process. Several studies concerning the DfMA application in OSC have been performed, but the comprehensive design process is not suggested for mitigating the aforementioned problems. This study proposes an OSC design process by integrating the fragmented DfMA considerations reported in previous studies. The considerations are identified through a systematic literature review and classified into structural and architectural types. To validate the proposed process, an OSC project design has been undertaken as a case study, wherein a significant portion of the building structure has been modified to comprise precast concrete (PC), instead of its reinforced counterpart, with a demonstrated reduction in the PC element design duration. The proposed process would guide and support the design process for reduction in the duration and errors incurred in the process. Moreover, the process can be considered a design guideline for the execution of future projects.

Abstract:
This study proposes to utilize modified Nano-SiO2/fluorinated polyacrylate emulsion that was synthesized with a semi-continuous starved seed emulsion polymerization to improve the hydrophobicity, thermal stability, and UV-Vis absorption of polyacrylate emulsion film. To verify the proposed method, a series inspection had been conducted to investigate the features of the emulsion film. The morphological analysis indicated that Nano-SiO2 was surrounded by a silane molecule after modification, which can efficiently prevent silica nanoparticles from aggregating. Fourier transform infrared spectra confirmed that modified SiO2 and dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (DFMA) were successfully introduced to the copolymer latex. The particle size of latex increased with the introduction of modified Nano-SiO2 and DFMA. UV-Vis absorption spectra revealed that modified silicon nanoparticles can improve the ultraviolet shielding effect obviously. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy illustrated that the film–air interface was richer in fluorine than film section and the glass side. The contact angle of modified Nano-SiO2/fluorinated polyacrylate emulsion containing 3 wt % DFMA was 112°, slightly lower than double that of polyacrylate emulsion, indicating composite emulsion films possess better hydrophobicity. These results suggest that introducing modified Nano-SiO2 and fluorine into polyacrylate emulsion can significantly enhance the thermal stability of emulsion films.

Abstract:
Today, companies involved in product development in the “Industry 4.0” era, need to manage all the necessary information required in the product entire lifecycle, in order to optimize as much as possible the product-process integration. In this paper, a Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) approach is proposed, in order to facilitate product-process information exchange, by considering design constraints and rules coming from DFMA (Design For Manufacturing and Assembly) guidelines. Indeed, anticipating these manufacturing and assembly constraints in product design process, reduces both costs and Time To Market (TTM), and avoids to repeat mistakes. The paper details the application of multi-objective optimization algorithms after considering DFMA constraints in a PLM approach. A case study using an original mechatronic system concept is presented, and improved by considering product-process integrated design, optimization and simulation loops, using numerical optimization and FEM (Finite Element Method) methods and tools.

Abstract:
Applying DFMA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly) principles is crucial in the process of designing models for wind tunnel testing. The design process, especially of models for measuring the pressure distribution, takes several months. Production of these models require a minimum couple of months; sometime even more. The manufacturing with defects are not allowed. Very narrow time limits, defined by a contract, do not leave enough time for reworking. Very often, designers may not have knowledge of manufacturing rules and best practices - resulting in slower product development cycles, increased ECO/MCO (Engineering Change Order / Manufacturing Change Order), significant material waste and lower production yields. Manual reviews of Design or consultations with manufacturing experts are time consuming. Whole process need for proximity between design and manufacturing engineers. Design engineers need quick and interactive feedback while designing, integrated access to company’s manufacturing knowledge repository. This paper presents an automated application DFMA principles, applying the rules defined in the prototype production of wind tunnel models in Military Technical Institute.

Abstract:
This article discusses it has become a basic assumption that prices do not rise but instead they should fall in the economics of electronic products. It was precisely to meet customers’ expectations of lower prices that a Canadian manufacturer went to an essentially mechanical redesign of a telecommunications device. Nortel’s work on the redesign followed the principles of a system called DFMA, or design for manufacture and assembly, a design analysis tool developed by Boothroyd Dewhurst Inc., Wakefield, RI. It enables product designers to pinpoint parts and assemblies that add unnecessary costs to a product, and then design to avoid them. DFMA is designed to give engineers a structured way to evaluate ease of assembly and the overall manufacturability of a product. Design for assembly requires the user to assess whether each part is necessary, and to consider the time and cost of assembling the product. Design for manufacture integrates information about manufacturing processes, allowing users to estimate manufacturing costs and make informed decisions about materials.

Abstract:
Highlights: The product development methodology aims to assist the planning and design of the product throughout its life cycle. Using selection criteria it is possible to choose a solution will be followed until the end of the development process and this process is known as optimization of product solutions. Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) is an approach that allows selecting a product solution with better manufacturing and assembly performance. Computational modeling allows representing systems in virtual environment in order to reproduce its characteristics and to compare scenarios through simulation. Goal: The objective of this work was to apply the computer simulation to compare the productive performance, according to production times, productivity and resource utilization rate, of three solutions proposed for a raincoat for pets with thermal protection. Methodology: Initially, conceptual models representing the production systems for the three product solutions were generated. The systems were modeled in discrete event simulation software, enabling different scenarios testing, resulting in production performance indicators for each product solution. Results: The analysis of the performance indicators allow identifying that the third solution proposed for the product obtained the best productive performance in all proposed scenarios; therefore, it was chosen as the best solution for the product according to the DFMA approach. Limitations of the investigation: The application of the methodology indicated in this work was limited to the study of a single productive system of a specific product. Practical implications: This work presents a practical application of computer simulation tools applied to product development. Originality / Value: The original contribution of this work is the application of computational simulation of production systems in product development following the DFMA approach.
