Abstract:
Throughout the history of Oman, water has played a major role in the settlement and the subsistence economy of a limited number of Omanis. This has been manifested by the emergence of hundreds of hamlets, villages and towns around water springs and aflaj and along wadis and mountain wadi terraces. Despite low subsistence levels, the population was quite well distributed with close interdependency between the settlements especially in the north of the country and in Dhofar. However, this close dependency on the natural resources has not substantially permitted the development of these human concentrations or the expansion of small towns to reach the level of cities. They have remained very limited and unable to promote their urban functions. Thus, a traditional discordant and precarious settlement system has prevailed, which seems to reflect a geographical space subdivided into tribal entities and the like. With the Omani renaissance, which has witnessed socio- economic development, water has once again emerged as a main factor in population mobility and distribution. Different development processes have led to the emergence of a new urban system, which has assumed a major role in enhancing Oman?s geographical space and in the national territorial unity.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper is a presentation of the verbal morphology of the basic stems (Ga and Gb morphological classes) in a dialect of Jibbali/Śħrḗt (Modern South Arabian sub-family, Semitic family) spoken in Eastern Dhofar (Sultanate of Oman). It aims, as far as possible, at an exhaustive description of the existing verbal types and its core is a collection of paradigms obtained through elicitation. Focus is given to the system of phonologically-triggered allomorphy that characterizes the Jibbali/Śħrḗt (and Modern South Arabian) verbal morphology, whereby to a given inflectional cell correspond several morphological patterns the choice between which is determined by the characteristics of the root. Surface phonological processes necessary to an apprehension of verbal forms are also summarized.

Abstract:
Medieval times as Zafar. Placed in a strategic position for its geographical location, climate, availability of water and abundance of fodder, its long history dates back to the Bronze Age. The settlement reached its peak in Mediaeval times when it was a (a hub?) of international trade along the Indian Ocean. Many commodities were exported from the region or passed through the port. Among them a number of regional products such as: myrrh, dragon’s blood, aloe and madder, the most important being, however, frankincense and Arabian horses. Frankincense trade in Mediaeval times is barely studied despite its importance and great incomes generated by this trade during the period. The paper will present a general overview of the site of Al Baleed and its importance in the trade of frankincense, mainly in relation with the Far-eastern market with an overview of the coveted treasures from the region of Dhofar.
