Background: Excess adiposity, diabetes mellitus, and ischaemic heart disease are common important causes of morbidity and premature mortality in postmenopausal women in the UK. A large amount of data exists on known risk factors for these conditions, and for risk factors men and women share there is little evidence to suggest sex-based differences. It has been suggested that factors unique to women (such as parity and breastfeeding) may also influence risk. Abstract:
Abstract A low level of physical activity and poor physical fitness are important risk factors of chronic non-communicable diseases and all-cause mortality. Much of the risk of these diseases originates in fetal life. The associations of early-life determinants with physical activity and fitness later in life are as yet not well studied. The aim of this work was to investigate early-life factors as predictors of physical activity and fitness in adolescence and young adulthood. We assessed a wide range of parental and pregnancy-related factors in 16-year-old adolescent participants of the North

Abstract Background: Patients diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) require insulin therapy. Although necessary, insulin therapy is associated with an immediate increase in Body Mass Index (BMI). Excessive increase in BMI may lead to obesity, which is associated with both short and long-term negative health outcomes. The objective of this study was to determine whether weight change in the six months after diagnosis in children and adolescents with T1DM is related to obesity status at age 18. Methods: Data from the Diabetes Education Resource for Children and Adolescents database

Glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is one of classic risk factors that have been explored to explain the excess of mortality and morbidity in diabetes. However, what is still unclear is whether BMI and HbA1c are also important factors of liver cancer incidence in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes in Taiwan. The aim of the study was to examine whether BMI and HbA1c were associated with liver cancer incidence in patients with t

Study subjects were at least 18 years of age, diagnosed with diabetes and taking ≥1 oral antidiabetic medication. Data were extracted over a 5-year period (01/01/2006-12/31/2010). The main study outcomes were healthcare costs and utilization and HRQoL. The study covariates were age, gender, race, smoking status, census region of residence, marital status, insu

BACKGROUND: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder affecting women of reproductive age. It is characterized by oligomenorrhea/menstrual irregularity, androgen excess, and polycystic ovary morphology. Currently there are three distinct diagnostic criteria used to ascertain PCOS in the population: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) criteria created in 1990 and later reviewed in 2012, the Rotterdam criteria established in 2003, and the most recent criteria by the Androgen Excess & PCOS Society (AE-PCOS) criteria developed in 2006. Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), an autoimmune disease in which the insulin-producing pancreatic ?-cells are destroyed, results in the inability of the pancreas to produce insulin to regulate blood glucose levels, an accumulation of glucose in the blood and cell starvation. Elevated glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, a metabolic marker of glucose control, are characteristic of T1DM. Chronic exposure to high blood glucose levels leads to microvascular and macrovascular complications.
