Abstract:
Bone Morphogenetic Protein-7 (BMP-7) belongs to the transforming growth factor-β (TGFβ) family of cytokines has is known to have potent anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used in patients to treat osteoporosis clinically and has been reported to treat diabetic nephropathy in murine models. Moreover, studies show that inflammation is up-regulated in patients with pre-diabetes (PD). We, therefore, hypothesize that the administration of BMP-7 will attenuate inflammation in the heart of Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced PD mice. In this study, we divided C57Bl/6 mice into three groups: C

Abstract:
Evidence suggests that non-adherence to medicines is an ongoing problem for people with diabetes and can adversely affect mortality, morbidity and health outcomes. Recent evidence and national guidance has reported patients’ medicine beliefs as an important antecedent of non-adherence, however, a review of the entire medicine beliefs literature has yet to be conducted and no research has explored the experience of nurses and patients involved in an exploration of patients’ medicine beliefs in routine practice settings. Conclusions from chapters 2 and 3 indicated nurse prescribers’ are not, but

Abstract:
Diabetic retinopathy is the single largest cause of sight loss and blindness in 18 to 65 year olds. Screening programs for the estimated one to six per- cent of the diabetic population have been demonstrated to be cost and sight saving, howeverthere are insufficient screening resources. Automatic screen-ing systems may help solve this resource short fall. This thesis reports on research into an aspect of automatic grading of diabetic retinopathy; namely the identification of the retinal blood vessels in fundus photographs. It de-velops two vessels segmentation strategies and assess their accur
