Articles of the lomentaceous fruits encountered in the thirty-six species of Brazilian Zornia species are described, illustrated and compared using scanning electron microscopy and stereomicroscopy. Macro-and micro-morphological characters of the fruit articles provide excellent diagnostic taxonomic characters (including fruit shape, fruit article surface, presence/absence of glands, presence/absence of bristles, and presence/absence of hairs) to distinguish among the Brazilian taxa. Results generally support the species recognised for Brazil although the micro-morphological characters have li

This paper presents morphological description and images of the larval instars of Neoheegeria dalmatica as well as observations on its life cycle and relationships with host plants in a temperate climate. It also compares characteristics of the second larval instar with those of Haplothrips verbasci, i.e. a species previously placed in the genus Neoheegeria. The main characteristic that differentiates the larvae of both species is, among others, the sculpture of their cuticle, which is smooth in H. verbasci and covered by dense microtrichia in N. dalmatica.

Prunus domestica is recognized as a species of fruit tree grown all over the world. It is used locally for various commercial purposes. In this research, we determined of the morphological and genetic diversity present for 5 samples of P. domestica cultivars from the governorate of Ninavah (Northern,Iraq).Five categorical fruit properties assist us to detect the varieties under phenotypic study. Metastable oxygen molecules in the singlet delta state, O2(1Δ), are believed to be the active species that are produced during laser irradiation of hematoporphyrin derivative (HPD), attached to tumors, and are responsible for cancer cell destruction. Although the presence of O2(1Δ) has been inferred by indirect chemical measurements, it has not been detected in real time. In this work, we review the optical characteristics of O2(1Δ) and describe an optical diagnostic procedure for its real-time detection during laser irradiation. Laser-diagnostic imaging techniques have become a useful tool for measurement of quantities such as species concentration and temperature in reacting and nonreacting turbulent flows. These techniques are valuable for determining the spatial character of large-scale structures in these flows because of their capability for simultaneous measurement at a large number of points in a plane intersecting the flow. A basic characteristic of turbulence, however, is its 3-D nature and thus fully 3-D data would be desirable. A new experimental technique has been developed which can produce an instantaneo

Monitoring scalar fields within aero-engine combustor is of particular importance for performance promotion and engine failure diagnostics. Due to harsh operating conditions and quite limited space, direct measurements of combustion state within near-real conditioned engine combustor were rarely reported. Therefore, this paper reports spontaneous Raman scattering (SRS) measurements of temperature and major species, such as CO2, H2O, CO, N2, within a reverseflow model combustor fueled by kerosene under elevated incoming temperature of 500 K and pressure of 5 bar. Abstract:
Wilt and crown rot are two important diseases of tomato caused by different strains ("formae speciales") of the fungus, Fusarium oxysporum. While both pathogens are members of the same fungal species, each differs genetically and resistance to the diseases is controlled by different genes in the plant. Additionally, the formae speciales differ in their ecology (e.g. optimal temperature of disease development) and epidemiology. Nevertheless, the distinction between these diseases based on symptoms alone may be unclear due to overlapping symptomatology. We have found in our research that the amb

I conducted bat surveys at Colonial National Historical Park to assess the status of bat communities following potential impacts of white-nose syndrome (WNS) since its arrival in Virginia in 2009. This disease, caused by the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans, has severely reduced populations of several bat species in the eastern United States, threatening some with regional extirpation. In the East, most-affected species include the little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus), the federally-endangered northern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis) and Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis) (USFWS 2007, USFW

Abstract:
Mycoplasma iowae (Mi) is a pathogenic avian mycoplasma which causes mortality in turkey embryos and as such has clinical and economic significance for the turkey breeder industry. Control of Mi infection is severely hampered by lack of adequate diagnostic tests, together with resistance to most antibiotics and resilience to environment. A markedly high degree of intra-species antigenic variation also contributes to difficulties in detection and control of infection. In this project we have designed an innovative gene-based diagnostic test based on specific amplification of the 16S rRNA gene of
