Background: Chronic right iliac fossa pain with normal radiological and laboratory finding is common indication for diagnostic laparoscopy by general surgeon. Most common cause of chronic right iliac fossa pain is appendicitis. Laparoscopic appendectomy is commonly done in diagnostic laparoscopy if other cause is not found. Methods: Patients of all the age group and either gender, undergone diagnostic laparoscopy for chronic right iliac fossa pain longer than 3 months with normal radiological finding in the surgical department. Diagnostic and therapeutic role of laparoscope was assessed. Results

Diagnostic laparoscopy is the basic procedure in laparoscopic surgery that has wide utility in practice, thus avoiding morbidity associated with open surgery. Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive technique wherein a fibre optic instrument is inserted through the abdominal wall to view the organs in abdomen/pelvis and permit the diagnosis and necessary surgical procedure. Nowadays, almost all general surgical procedures can be performed using minimal invasive techniques. Laparoscopy can be performed both for diagnostic as well as for therapeutic purposes. Diagnostic laparoscopies are a very useful diagnostic tool especially in rural areas. However, the very high costs of the current diagnostic equipment make them unavailable to most of the rural centres. We describe a low-cost laparoscope that does away with the telescope and rod lens system and offers very good quality pictures for diagnostic laparoscopy at small fraction of the cost of current laparoscopic surgical instruments.

Introduction: Abdominal pain requires rapid diagnosis and treatment, especially in emergency circumstances. Sometimes the diagnosis of the disease cannot be accomplished with laboratory and imaging methods, and an invasive procedure such as diagnostic laparoscopy may be required to obtain a diagnosis. Diagnostic laparoscopy is also performed therapeutically, but laparotomy is inevitable in some cases. The aim of the study is to evaluate the role of diagnostic laparoscopy in diagnosis and treatment and to retrospectively examine the factors that force the surgeon to perform a laparotomy. Materi

Minimally invasive surgery (MIS), including laparoscopy, endoscopy and colonoscopy, refers to performance of diagnostic or surgical intervention in the internal body cavity through small incisions (or no incisions) to reduce the recovery time and minimize scarring [1]. It has gained worldwide popularity since the first report of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the mid-1980s due to lower complications, cosmetic benefits and quick recovery [2] and has grown to include robotic approaches. One of the main challenges for this type of surgery is to provide sufficient real-time visual feedback using
