Padronizou-se a PCR-Multiplex para a detecção do DNA de Neisseria meningitidis. Para tanto os primers escolhidos foram: RW01, DG74 e COR28 baseados na subunidade menor do ribossomo (16S rRNA) que apresenta regiões de seqüências conservadas encontradas em todas as bactérias conhecidas. Neste estudo, técnicas moleculares foram utilizadas para detecção de HEV, HHV e HAdV em amostras de líquor colhidas de janeiro de 2005 a março de 2007. Dos três métodos de extração de DNA e RNA testados, o kit DNA Qiablood Qiagen® se mostrou o mais sensível e específico. Of all forms of tuberculosis, tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is the most lethal. Mortality and morbidity rates associated with tuberculous meningitis (TBM) are substantial. The average duration of the untreated disease from onset to death is about 17 days. Meningitis remains a frightening disease with a high morbidity and mortality in spite of optimal treatment. In South Africa in particular, the incidence of HIV-infected patents with meningitis has risen considerably during the past decade. The first part of this meningitis study evaluated prognostic indicators in meningitis. In 100 adult patients with meningitis it was found that the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) at admission was a good indicator of the ultimate prognosis of the patient, with a GCS value of > 12 associated with a good outcome in 88% of patients.
