Full textThis work synthesizes knowledge about the aquifer investigated by the Hydrogeological Experimental Site of Poitiers. Flowpath structure has been identified from lithostratigraphic core analysis and borehole logging data. The flow is governed by karstic structures and fractures. Karstic levels are constrained within 3 sub-horizontal geological levels. The interconnectivity between these levels seems controlled by the sub-vertical fractures. The hydrodynamic characterization of flowpaths is based on the interpretation of slug test. A new model has been developed, which takes into account inertial effects and fractional flow dimension. Sensibility analysis shows that the two key parameters are the flow dimension and the hydraulic conductivity. The results show that diffusivity values of hydraulic connection vary over several orders of magnitude and allow hydraulic response at far observation wells. Knowledge about geology and flowpath structure is incorporated into a model of HES based on a composite approach DFN / heterogeneous continuous medium. Results allow to reproduce satisfactorily the unusual hydraulic behavior of HES, particularly the spatial and time similarity of drawdown curves

Full textIn petroleum wells, many tools operating on different physical principles are commonly used for data acquisition. This thesis focuses on actives nuclear logging probes involving a neutron or a gamma source. They are used in the oil industry to characterize the well geology and have been initially developed to realize quantitative measurements in open hole conditions where the probe is directly in contact with the rock formation. Once the petroleum well is drilled, a steel casing is installed and cemented, the probes are then no longer in contact with the rock formation and the measurements are considered qualitative due to the complexity of the geometry and the signal attenuation. With the hydrocarbon resources rarefaction, the number of explorations projects decease each year. Petroleum companies have more and more mature wells whose production capacities must be maintained and others at the end of their life which must be abandoned. Those phases require systematically logging measurements. The quantity of logs in cased-hole configuration tends to increase a lot and it becomes necessary to improve their interpretation. The industrial problematic is to characterize quantitatively, in a filed with strong radial heterogeneity, all the components the well (e.g. the fluids, the casing, the cement) and not just the rock reservoir parameters. The approach developed in the thesis is based on the concept of sensitivity function of nuclear logging probes, which represents the 3D dependency of the measurement to the model elements and are obtained by Monte-Carlo simulation. Due to the large number of unknowns, a multiphysical inversion considering the all the measurements of the different nuclear probes (porosity by neutron diffusion, density by gamma diffusion, lithology by neutron-gamma activation) is essential. The first part of the thesis allowed to compare the Monte-Carlo particles transport codes GEANT4 and MCNP for Geosciences applications. Results show a very good agreement for the gamma-gamma physics and a good agreement for the neutron-neutron physics but significant discrepancies for the neutron-gamma physics where MCNP seems to be more relevant. The second part of the thesis allowed to experimental validate Monte-Carlo simulations and to design a sensitivity function computation method specific for the cased-hole configuration. The validation is a comparison between the experimental sensitivity functions measured in calibration center and the numerical sensitivity functions computed using two different methods, the first one based on spatial importances estimated with MCNP and the second one based on interaction locations obtained with GEANT4. The results show good experimental agreement between the measured and calculated radial and axial sensitivity profiles, which validates the concept of sensitivity function with a preference for the interaction locations method which presents greater radial contrast between the different components of the well. The third part of the thesis consisted of making the geological interpretation of a reservoir zone of a cased hole well with sensitivity functions. The neutron-gamma and porosity logs predicted using the sensitivity functions are compared to the measured logs. An optimal earth model is obtained by iteration, showing a good capacity of the fast forward modeling algorithums to quantitatively reproduce the logs in cased-hole configuration providing that a relevant calibration is apply

Full textThe topic of this thesis was inspired by an engineering project in the oil industry. The challenge is the development of a formation-evaluation measurement that determines the water content of rocks and other petrophysical features in hydrocarbon-bearing formations. The measurement uses electromagnetic propagation signals between 100 and 1000 MHz to determine the dielectric constant of rocks around a well, as the sonde is moved along a hole through these rocks. The sonde deploys an array of tangential magnetic dipole antennas with two polarizations in a metal housing. The sonde uses a differential measurement to determine the wavelength and skin depth of the signal and that way the dielectric permittivity and electric conductivity of the surrounding medium. These dual-polarization antennas were designed by detailed modeling simulations and were characterized in extensive laboratory experiments. The good agreement between theoretical and experimental studies helped to identify and then eliminate parasitic radiation modes and provide a pure magnetic-dipole radiator. The optimized individual antennas were integrated into prototype arrays that successfully completed field trials with quantitative results that were independently confirmed and reached the expected accuracy and dynamic performance specifications

Full textIn Nunavik (Québec), frost-susceptible marine sediments were deposited along the coasts of Hudson Bay and Ungava Bay after their deglaciation and during the subsequent marine transgression. Following the postglacial emersion due to the isostatic uplift, the marine deposits came in contact with the cold air and ice-rich permafrost formed in these deposits. Therefore, the Inuit communities located along the coasts of Nunavik may be built on ice-rich permafrost and their infrastructures may be vulnerable to permafrost degradation. This vulnerability may impact the sustainable development of these communities affecting the performance, maintenance costs and service life of their infrastructures. In answer to the needs of efficient permafrost investigation in cold regions engineering to avoid zones vulnerable or use mitigation method to permafrost degradation, the main goals of this doctoral research project are: 1) to assess a conceptual geocryological model of an ice-rich permafrost mound in the discontinuous permafrost zone in Nunavik from the interpretation of five cone penetration tests carried out in the mound, 2) taking into account the previous model and using the forward modelling approach in geophysics, to develop an innovative geophysical approach based on different geo-electrical methods for permafrost investigation, 3) to test this geophysical approach for the characterization of the previous ice-rich permafrost mound, and 4) to contribute to knowledge development on the geocryology of permafrost mounds in Nunavik. The study site is located in a deep valley near the Inuit community of Umiujaq along the east coast of Hudson Bay. Permafrost environments characteristic of Nunavik such as ice-rich permafrost mounds are found in this valley which is accessible from this community. The research methodology consists in using the forward modelling approach in geophysics taking into account the conceptual geocryological model of the studied ice-rich permafrost mound to design the geophysical investigation based of induced polarization tomography and electrical resistivity logging. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional induced polarization tomography and electrical resistivity logging were then performed of the study site. Unidimensional, two-dimensional and three-dimensional models of electrical resistivity and chargeability of the study site were found from the inversion of these geo-electrical surveys. The conceptual geocryological model was then improved by interpretating these geo-electrical models. The ice-rich core of the permafrost mound was accurately delineated using this geophysical approach. In conclusion, the geo-electrical investigation approach developed herein for the two-dimensional and three-dimensional characterization of ice-rich permafrost environments can be used to delineate zones vulnerable to permafrost degradation before the construction of northern infrastructures or along existing infrastructures to assess their vulnerability.

Full textThe retro-arc foreland basin of the Central Andes is considered as a type-example of a foreland basin system (Horton & DeCelles, 1997). Three regions have been studied : the North Amazonian basin (3-8ʿS), the South Amazonian basin (11-12ʿS) and the south-eastern Bolivian basin (19-20ʿS). The foreland basin system of the Central Andes constitutes a favoured area where studies of the deformation and sedimentary fill can be coupled. This study enabled us to arrive at a clearer understanding of the longitudinal and latitudinal structural/sedimentary evolutions and of the tectono-sedimentary dynamics of the basin and adjacent orogen, and to a sequential restoration of the basins at key-periods in the evolution of the range from the Eocene to present-day. During the early and middle Eocene, the Western Cordillera of northern Peru between 3 and 8ʿS experienced large uplift and erosion. This event is interpreted as a stage of tectonic quiescence and erosional unloading. To the south of 11ʿS, no such event is recorded in the sedimentary fill and the sedimentary arrangement indicates the development of a flexural basin related to orogenic loading. Because the North Amazonian foreland basin system is situated at the junction between the Central Andes and the Northern Andes, this change in the geodynamic process can be ascribed to the interference with the Northern Andes. .
