It is based on two translations into English of the Swedish book The Brothers Lionheart and its focus lies on proper names, place names, food, and dialect. Acomparison between the two translations is also made. The results showed that there were differences in the translation of proper names, place names, and food. This thesis investigates the Scandinavian contribution to medieval microtoponymic vocabulary in two areas of northwest England, Wirral, part of the historic county of Cheshire in the north-west Midlands, and an area of the county of Cumbria, the West Ward of Westmorland Barony. The research base is Tomsk dialect dictionaries and dialect corpus. 73 items of outerwear are distributed according to different criteria: clothing season, gender, material, etc. On the basis of cultural components in the meaning of lexical units manifested in the live speech of dialect-speaking peasants, a linguistic and cultural commentary is presented.
