Abstract:
This chapter argues that the Romantic period was a formative one in terms of dialect representation, marking a shift from the representation of a narrow range of dialects for primarily comic purposes in the eighteenth century to a much broader range of dialects with a greater range of literary functions in the nineteenth century. The chapter identifies three key challenges that arise when analysing historical representations of dialect: changes in understandings of the concept of ‘dialect’, the different trajectories taken by specific dialects, and the ideological implications of representing dialect in literature. The chapter identifies Scots as the most significant literary dialect of the Romantic period, and demonstrates that representations of dialect occur at the intersection of a number of highly contested categories, including class, nation, and region.

Honeybone, Patrick, and Warren Maguire, eds. Dialect Writing and the North of England. Edinburgh University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474442565.001.0001.

Abstract:
This book aims to offer a comprehensive investigation of dialect writing in the North of England. It brings together a wide range of contributors, investigating everything from the cultural positioning and impact of dialect writing to the mechanics of how authors produce dialect spellings (and what this can tell us about the structure of the dialects represented). Case studies focus on dialect writing from all over the North of England and consider many types of text, including dialect poetry, translations into dialect, letters, tweets, direct speech in novels, humorous localised volumes, written reports of conversations and cartoons in local newspapers. The North of England is a compelling geographical and dialectological focus: it is coherent part of the English-speaking world with considerable dialectal diversity and there are long traditions of dialect writing in the area. Contributions in the book also focus on broad questions about dialect writing in general: What is it? Who does it? What types of dialect writing exist? How can linguists interpret it? How does it interact with speakers’ linguistic knowledge?

Abstract:
Abstract This book tells the story of the Victorians’ discovery of English dialect, and of the revaluation of local language that was brought about by the new, historical philology of the nineteenth century, as a result of which regional dialects came to be seen not as corrupt or pernicious, but rather as venerable and precious. It examines the work of the groundbreaking collectors of the 1840s and 1850s, who first alerted their contemporaries to the importance of local dialect—and also to the perils, they believed, that threatened it with extinction. It traces the connection between dialect and literature, in the flourishing of dialect poetry and the foregrounding of regional voices in Victorian fiction. It explains how the antiquity of regional dialects cast light on the national past—the Celts, Anglo-Saxons, and Vikings—and how dialect study was also at the heart of the discovery of local folklore and oral culture. And it tells the story of the three great monuments of Victorian dialect study that marked the apogee of regional philology: the eighty publications of the English Dialect Society (1873−96), an organization run by a committee of journalists and local historians in Manchester; the nationwide survey of The Existing Phonology of English Dialects (1889), which listened in on local speech in market squares and third-class railway carriages; and the multi-volume English Dialect Dictionary (1898−1905), which collected all the previous labours together, and made an enduring record of Victorian dialect.

Behnstedt, Peter, and Manfred Woidich. The formation of the Egyptian Arabic dialect area. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198701378.003.0003.

Abstract:
This chapter deals with the sedentary dialects of Egypt, excluding the bedouin dialects of Sinai and the Libyan bedouin dialects on the Mediterranean coast. It attempts to combine historical information on the settlement of Arabic tribes in Egypt with accounts of present-day Egyptian dialects and those of the regions from which those tribes came, initially Yemen and the Levant, later Hejaz, and then the Maghreb. The diversity of the Egyptian Arabic dialect area is partly explained by external factors, namely different layers of arabization over centuries. It is also explained by internal factors, namely dialect contact, which implies phenomena such as hyperdialectisms. Egypt is seen as a dialect area in its own right, but one that shows phenomena of a transitional area between the Arab East and West. A case study of Alexandria deals with dialect death. The role of substrata is discussed, but is considered negligible.

Abstract:
This book presents an investigation into the phonological origins of Mid-Ulster English (MUE), one of the primary dialects of English in Ireland. Specifically it is an analysis of the development of the segmental phonology of the dialect and the input to this from English, Scots and Irish. Like other varieties of Irish English, MUE is an extra-territorial, new dialect of English, albeit one which has a history of over 400 years, making it one of the oldest ‘new’ dialects of the language. It developed in a context of contact between English, Scots and Irish in Ulster, the northernmost province of Ireland, as a result of English and Scottish migration to the island during the Plantation of Ulster and its associated settlements in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Understanding the phonological development of MUE requires us to take into account the nature of the contact that occurred between English, Scots and Irish in Ulster as this has determined the kind of dialect that evolved in this part of Ireland. In turn, an analysis of the phonological origins of MUE can help us to clarify aspects of this linguistic history, since the dialect which developed is one of the chief witnesses of this history. This study seeks to determine the phonological origins of MUE, and to understand why the dialect developed the way it did and what the phonology of the dialect can tell us about the nature of contact between the input language varieties.
