Abstract:
This chapter outlines the scholarly background of the study of Arabic historical dialectology, and addresses the following issues: the early history of Arabic: myth and reality; the definition and exemplification of ‘Middle Arabic’ and ‘Mixed Arabic through history’; evidence for the early occurrence of certain Arabic dialectal features; examples of substrates and borrowing in Arabic dialects; the dialect geography of Arabic and its typology, especially the ‘sedentary’ and ‘bedouin’ divide; how and why dialects have undergone change, large-scale and small-scale, and the causative social factor

Abstract:
This book aims to offer a comprehensive investigation of dialect writing in the North of England. It brings together a wide range of contributors, investigating everything from the cultural positioning and impact of dialect writing to the mechanics of how authors produce dialect spellings (and what this can tell us about the structure of the dialects represented). Case studies focus on dialect writing from all over the North of England and consider many types of text, including dialect poetry, translations into dialect, letters, tweets, direct speech in novels, humorous localised volumes, writ

Abstract:
This chapter argues that the Romantic period was a formative one in terms of dialect representation, marking a shift from the representation of a narrow range of dialects for primarily comic purposes in the eighteenth century to a much broader range of dialects with a greater range of literary functions in the nineteenth century. The chapter identifies three key challenges that arise when analysing historical representations of dialect: changes in understandings of the concept of ‘dialect’, the different trajectories taken by specific dialects, and the ideological implications of representing

This chapter deals with the sedentary dialects of Egypt, excluding the bedouin dialects of Sinai and the Libyan bedouin dialects on the Mediterranean coast. It attempts to combine historical information on the settlement of Arabic tribes in Egypt with accounts of present-day Egyptian dialects and those of the regions from which those tribes came, initially Yemen and the Levant, later Hejaz, and then the Maghreb. The diversity of the Egyptian Arabic dialect area is partly explained by external factors, namely different layers of arabization over centuries. It is also explained by internal facto

The vocabulary of the modern Gulf Arabic dialects contains many items of ancient Mesopotamian origin; there is also evidence of early south Arabian influences. Historically, three dialect types existed in the region: Najdi, coastal (these two are ‘A dialects’), and Baḥārna (‘B’ dialects). There must long have been contact between these three, but the main interface was between the Najdi and the coastal type. The (Shīˁī) Baḥārna lived in separate settlements, pursued livelihoods specific to them, and did not marry with the other two groups. All of this preserved their dialect. This sociolinguis

Abstract This book tells the story of the Victorians’ discovery of English dialect, and of the revaluation of local language that was brought about by the new, historical philology of the nineteenth century, as a result of which regional dialects came to be seen not as corrupt or pernicious, but rather as venerable and precious. It examines the work of the groundbreaking collectors of the 1840s and 1850s, who first alerted their contemporaries to the importance of local dialect—and also to the perils, they believed, that threatened it with extinction. It traces the connection between dialect a

This book presents an investigation into the phonological origins of Mid-Ulster English (MUE), one of the primary dialects of English in Ireland. Specifically it is an analysis of the development of the segmental phonology of the dialect and the input to this from English, Scots and Irish. Like other varieties of Irish English, MUE is an extra-territorial, new dialect of English, albeit one which has a history of over 400 years, making it one of the oldest ‘new’ dialects of the language. It developed in a context of contact between English, Scots and Irish in Ulster, the northernmost province

The dialect spoken in one community in Northern Puebla is in focus in the following. Basic typological features of this dialect are presented. A valency system based on verb derivation is outlined. A conceptual approach to valency is adopted, and it leads to no recognition of anti-passive in Nawatl. A suffix, ta/te:, the function of which is to broadly suspend referentiality to subject, object, and possessor, is presented. Red

Abstract:
This paper discusses classic and recent findings on the cross-cultural communication of emotions, highlighting the dialect theory of emotion. Dialect theory uses a linguistic metaphor to argue emotion is a universal language with dialects that have subtle differences from each other. As in verbal language, it is more challenging to understand someone speaking a different dialect. This notion is meant to integrate decades of empirical findings. Notably, research supports an in-group advantage, whereby individuals are more accurate judging emotional expressions from their own cultural group vers

The classical conception of dialectics is introduced and its applicability and applications in management and organization studies considered. Given its provenance in Hegelian and Marxist thought one might not expect managerialist thinkers to have embraced the central notion of contradictions—one would be mistaken. After considering managerialist accounts of contradictions, which it argues are non-dialectical, this chapter considers how the classical trinity of never-ending unfolding thesis/anti-thesis/synthesis, the result of which forms a new thesis for the endless return of the dialectic an
