Abstract:
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based, psychosocial treatment originally developed for suicidal individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). It is now broadly seen as the treatment of choice for individuals with BPD. DBT is a comprehensive, cognitive-behavioral treatment designed to help a client achieve a “life worth living.” Research on DBT’s effectiveness is compelling and was the first to empirically demonstrate that individuals with BPD and severe emotional dysregulation and/or suicidal behavior could be effectively treated with a psychosocial therapy. As the research literature on DBT continues to grow, it will be important to move beyond randomized clinical trials comparing DBT to control treatments and instead focus on identifying important predictors and mediators of change. This chapter describes the foundation and theoretical underpinnings of DBT, provides details about the structure of DBT in all its components, and summarizes some existing research. A detailed case example is provided.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the implementation of the dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) Intensive Training Model developed in response to the lack of effectiveness of standard training workshops. The dissemination and implementation of the Positive Parenting Program (Triple P) is unique relative to the other interventions in this volume given the population-based approach taken by its developers.

Abstract:
This chapter provides a description and review of the research evidence for the adaptation of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and emotion-focused therapies for eating disorders (EDs). First, the chapter briefly describes the standard DBT program as originally developed for women with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and the evidence for standard DBT with BPD. Second, the rationale for the adaptation of DBT for EDs is given and preliminary evidence for DBT and other emotion-focused treatments is described. Finally, the Stanford DBT program for EDs is outlined. Given the promise of alternative treatments for eating disorders, further development, adaptation, and testing of transdiagnostic emotion regulation treatments is warranted.

Abstract:
This handbook examines theoretical, structural, clinical and implementation aspects of dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) for a variety of disorders such as borderline personality disorder (BPD), suicidal behaviour in the context of BPD, substance use disorders, cognitive disabilities, eating disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The volume considers the dialectical dilemmas of implementation with respect to DBT in both national and international systems, its adaptations in routine clinical settings, and its behavioural foundations. It also discusses evidence-based training in DBT, validation principles and practices in DBT, the biosocial theory of BPD, the structure of DBT programs, and the efficacy of DBT in college counseling centers. Finally, the book reflects on the achievements of DBT since the first treatment trial and considers challenges and future directions for DBT in terms of its theoretical underpinnings, clinical outcomes, adaptations and implementation in practice.

Abstract:
For the treatment of borderline personality disorder, a meta-analysis found statistically significant effects indicating a beneficial effect of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) over treatment as usual for reduction in anger, parasuicidality, and mental health. All of these effects were moderate to large. However, DBT is not uniquely effective for borderline personality disorder. Two type 1 randomized controlled trials found equal effects for versions of psychodynamic therapy. Single type 1 studies have also supported the efficacy, compared to treatment as usual, of cognitive therapy, schema therapy, and Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving (STEPPS, a therapy that combines cognitive-behavioral techniques and skills training with a systems component) as treatments for borderline personality disorder.

Abstract:
Many different kinds of group or individual psychotherapeutic interventions, applied to the special needs of patients with ADHD, already exist (e.g. cognitive–behavioural therapy [CBT], coaching, problem-focused therapy, meta-cognitive training, mindfulness-based interventions, psychoeducation, and dialectical behaviour therapy [DBT]-based cognitive therapy). Most of these treatments are behaviourally orientated, and are predominantly modularly structured. CBT has been investigated most frequently and is regarded as the most effective psychological treatment option. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines recommend CBT as appropriate for adolescents with moderate impairments and for adults, i.e. if drug treatment has proved to be only partially effective or ineffective. Interventions treating adolescents with ADHD are frequently based on CBT principles, behavioural therapy approaches, and cognitive and social skills training techniques addressing the patient, parents, or teachers. Unfortunately, interventions for adolescents have been investigated on a comparatively limited scale.
