Abstract:
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) was founded by Linehan and her colleagues which was initially created for treating borderline personality disorder (BPD). It is recognized that it’s an effective way to cope with emotion dysregulation and it has now been put into wider use in clinical practices, dealing with eating disorders, generalized anxiety disorder, drug abuse, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder etc. The exploration into its neurobiological mechanisms has made some progress which suggests that the application of DBT has broad prospects which cannot be ignored. There are issues emerge during the development of DBT, such as the cultural adaptation of DBT and it novel application in different domains. It is worth mentioning that DBT can also be considered as a daily practice that benefits people’s mental health in everyday life. Research and trials on the application of DBT is still in progress. The present review mainly outlines applications of DBT in clinical practices and analyzes the possibility of culturally adapted DBT and the online delivery of DBT. Directions of future studies are also discussed.

Abstract:
The objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness of solution-focused therapy and dialectical behavior therapy on self-care and quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes. The present research was a semi-experimental pre-test, post-test with control group design including a follow-up period. The study population consisted of women with diabetes attending a health care center in District 6 of Tehran, of whom 45 were purposively selected and randomly assigned to two experimental groups (solution-focused therapy and dialectical behavior therapy) and one control group. The Self-Care Self-Efficacy Questionnaire by Lu (1996) and the WHOQOL BREF quality of life questionnaire were used. The first experimental group underwent seven 90-minute sessions of solution-focused therapy, and the second experimental group underwent eight 90-minute sessions of dialectical behavior therapy. Repeated measures analysis of variance was used for data analysis. Findings indicated that both solution-focused therapy and dialectical behavior therapy significantly improve self-care and quality of life (p < 0.05). Additionally, results showed that dialectical behavior therapy was more effective than solution-focused therapy in improving self-care and quality of life (p < 0.05). In conclusion, both solution-focused therapy and dialectical behavior therapy are effective in improving self-care and quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes, with dialectical behavior therapy being more effective. Therefore, these approaches can be utilized alongside medical interventions in clinical settings.

Abstract:
Dissociative identity disorder and borderline personality disorder resemble each other in trauma histories and comorbidity. Each disorder is frequently comorbid with the other. Treatment outcome data for Dialectical Behavior Therapy of borderline personality disorder and Trauma Model Therapy of dissociative identity disorder are reviewed. The author proposes a psychotherapy treatment study in which there are three subject groups and two treatment conditions. The subject groups are borderline personality disorder without dissociative identity disorder; dissociative identity disorder without borderline personality disorder; and both conditions present concurrently. Subjects would be randomized to receive Dialectical Behavior Therapy or Trauma Model Therapy. Such a study could provide answers to controversies in the field about a better treatment approach for dissociative identity disorder and potentially could broaden and strengthen the indications for Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

Abstract:
A substantial body of research supports dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) as an evidence-based treatment for those with borderline personality disorder (BPD); however, there remains a lack of mental health clinicians trained in this modality, resulting in limited clinician competencies and skills. Furthermore, the effectiveness of DBT trainings with mental health clinicians remains understudied. The present study evaluated a comprehensive 5-day DBT-Linehan Board of Certification training program. Informed by the Theory of Planned Behavior, this study assessed changes in clinician knowledge, attitudes, perceived behavioral control (PBC), intentions, and behaviors relevant to DBT at baseline, posttraining, and 6-month follow-up. Results showed large, significant pre-to-post training improvements in clinicians’ knowledge, attitudes, PBC, and intentions related to DBT implementation. Large improvements in knowledge, attitudes, and PBC were sustained at follow-up. A significant improvement in actual behaviors was also found at follow-up. Implications of the present study and directions for future research are discussed.

Abstract:
This study describes the treatment of obese individuals who rated high on emotional eating using four case studies that involved 22 sessions of either cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). Outcomes measures relating to weight, body mass index, emotional eating, depression, anxiety, and stress were all assessed with each participant prior to each baseline (three weekly sessions), during treatment and posttherapy. At the 8-week follow-up, the two cases that had received DBT had lost 10.1% and 7.6% of their initial body weight, whereas the two cases that had received CBT had lost 0.7% and 0.6% of their initial body weight. The two DBT cases also exhibited reductions in emotional distress, frequency of emotional eating or quantity of food eating in response to emotions, whereas the two CBT cases showed no overall reductions in these areas. Important processes from all four cases are described as are the implications to clinicians for developing more effective interventions for obese clients who engage in emotional eating.
