Full textThe aim of the present thesis is to analyze the language of three Siculo-Arabic works of Norman period in light of the recent approaches and studies on Maghribi dialects and Middle Arabic: the Cambridge Chronicle, which is anonymous, and two works by Idrīsī: the Opus Geographicum and the Kitāb al-ğāmiʿ li ṣifāt aštāt al-nabāt wa-ḍurūb anwāʿ al-mufradāt. In this analysis, I aim at verifying the presence of some eventual dialectal and Middle Arabic features that permit to shed new light on Siculo Arabic characteristics, at least in regards to the period considered (11th-12th century). Besides, the lexical analysis of the Kitāb al-ğāmiʿ is a fruitful contribution for the study of the lexicon of Maghribi area, particularly, of Sicilian and Andalusian area, and for a major diffusion of this work that is of great value within the history of International medicine, pharmacopoeia and botany.

Full textThis research connects two disciplines: audiovisual translation (AVT) for cinema and sociolinguistics. The connection is represented by the use of dialect (or a mixture of regional and standard varieties) in film dialogues. The research main objective is to examine the way dialoguists and subtitlers adapt films containing dialects, namely the Sicilian one. The analysis focuses on the five Sicilian films directed by Giuseppe Tornatore and their French dubbed and subtitled versions in DVD. Firstly, a description of Italian and French markets of the video home entertainment is provided, together with the definition of AVT state of art, of Italian linguistic repertoire, in which dialects are situated, and of the nature of film dialogues, among the different linguistic varieties. Italian and French dialectological realities are compared, as well. It allows us to situate the research in its specific socio-cultural and economic context. Secondly, the director and the films are presented, giving general information about the plot, the main characters, the set and the critiques in Italy and in France. Successively, the use of dialect in the cinematographic production is taken into consideration, from the introduction of the sound until nowadays. The role of dialect in Tornatore’s films is shown and the dialectal peculiarities of dialogues are also described. The following complete traductological analysis of original and adapted versions brings out the global adapting strategy, which is illustrated by means of a rich selection of examples. This strategy undergoes a critical examination as well. It is composed by three main factors, operating simultaneously: the reproduction of a French informal variety, through the different constitutive levels, the modulation of French substandard registers in lexical choices and the use of translating-adapting procedures, which make the different solutions either more source or target oriented. Finally, compensation appears to be the real catalyst of the adaption.
