Russia's semi-democratic system and fuel-driven state capitalism gradually recovered from the financial crisis. The Putin-Medvedev diarchy functioned reasonably well, although the two have not worked out a plan for political succession in 2012. On external relations, Russia improved ties with the U.S., and Kyrgyzstan's April revolution appeared a blessing.

Abstract:
In the global financial crisis, Russia faces the most severe challenge to its politicoeconomic system. Oil prices plummeted, and Russia's exports and state revenues dropped with them. The economy was severely shaken, and cracks appeared in its semi-democratic system headed by the Putin-Medvedev diarchy. However, relations with Washington showed signs of improvement as President Obama reset the overall tone of U.S. foreign policy. Russia pursued cordial ties with Asia, in part to compensate for volatile relations with the West.

Abstract:
This paper interrogates the historical background to the diarchy system of rule in the Odomase traditional area in the Brong-Ahafo Region of Ghana. Relying on archival documents complemented by interviews, the research reveals that unlike chieftaincy forms in other traditional Ghanaian societies, the people of Odomase have a completely different practice in electing chiefs. The two royal houses have the endorsement of central government to elect two candidates to be installed concurrently as chiefs for the traditional area. The authors argue that the dual chieftaincy arrangement in Odomase, despite its seeming challenges, is the best solution to address the intractable conflict in the traditional polity of the area.

Abstract:
This article seeks to contribute to the debate on how political representation can promote democracy by analysing the Chamber in the Square, which is a component of legislative theatre. A set of techniques devised to democratise representative governments, legislative theatre was created by Augusto Boal when he was elected a political representative in 1993. After briefly reviewing Nadia Urbinati’s understanding of democratic representation as a diarchy of will and judgement, I partially endorse Hélène Landemore’s criticism and contend that if representation is to be democratic, citizens’ exchange of opinions in the public sphere should be invested with the power not only to judge but also to decide political affairs. By opening up a space where the represented can judge, decide, and contest the general terms of the bills representatives present in the assembly, the Chamber in the Square harnesses political representation to democracy.

Abstract:
AbstractDespite recurring elections and the transition to multiparty systems, authoritarianism has re-emerged in the Post-Soviet Space. Along with domestic factors, the external dimension should also be considered to fully understand this regional trend. Scholars depict Russia as a typical ‘black knight’ for democracy. While most of the literature deals with the Kremlin's policies in the ‘new’ Eastern Europe, this article pays attention to Russia's actions in the relatively understudied Southern Caucasus. Specifically, it investigates why and how Moscow tried to thwart democratization in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. The diachronic analysis addresses three periods, namely, Yeltsin's presidency, the first Putin presidency and the Putin–Medvedev diarchy. Findings suggest that the Kremlin implemented an increasingly nuanced and intentional black knight strategy in Southern Caucasus, aimed at gaining primacy in the Post-Soviet Space and recognition of its great power status.

Sutherland, John Keith Bell. "Election by lot and the democratic diarchy." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/31813.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis argues that ‘democracy’ can better be understood in terms of a conceptual diarchy of ‘isonomia’ (equal political rights) and ‘isegoria’ (equal speech rights), rather than the conventional diarchy of ‘will’ and ‘opinion’ that originated in the era of absolute monarchy. As the proposed diarchy has its origin in classical Greece, the thesis starts with a brief overview of the institutional changes in sixth-, fifth- and fourth-century Athenian democracy that implemented the distinction in different ways, and examines some of its dysfunctions. The particular aspect of Athenian democracy under focus is sortition – the random selection of citizens for public office – viewed in antiquity as democratic, whereas election was viewed as an aristocratic or oligarchic selection mechanism. The thesis takes issue with Bernard Manin’s claim that the ‘triumph of election’ was on account of the natural right theory of consent, arguing that sortition-based proxy representation is a better way of indicating (hypothetical) consent than preference election. The thesis then seeks to clarify the concept(s) of representation – essential to the implementation of the democratic diarchy in modern large-scale societies – and to study how the diarchy has been reincarnated in modern representative democracies, along with an examination of the pathologies thereof. Consideration is given as to what the deliberative style of assemblies selected by lot should be, alongside evaluation of the epistemic potential of cognitive diversity and the ‘wisdom of crowds’. Given the need for both isonomia and isegoria to assume a representative form in large modern states, Michael Saward’s Representative Claim is adopted as a theoretical model to extend the reach of political representation beyond elections. The thesis concludes with tentative proposals as to how the fourth-century reforms (delegation of the final lawmaking decision to randomly-selected nomothetic courts) might be used as a template for modern institutions to resolve some of the problems of mass democracy.

Cho, Bernardo Kyu. "Rejected son : royal Messianism and the Jerusalem priesthood in the Gospel of Mark." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/23500.

Full text
Abstract:
The messiahship of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark has figured prominently in modern New Testament scholarship. With the increasing awareness of the Jewish context from which the gospel traditions emerged, scholars have also paid close attention to the way Mark portrays Jesus in relation to the temple. Within these discussions, it is not uncommon to find claims that the Markan Jesus regards the Jerusalem institution as completely obsolete, some maintaining that the message of the kingdom of God in Mark is fundamentally opposed to the ancient Levitical system. Yet, there is not a single full-length monograph grappling with the question of how Mark presents Jesus as royal messiah on the one hand, and his interaction with the Jerusalem priests on the other. Such a project is now imperative, not least given the recent advancement in our understanding both of messianic expectations in the late Second Temple period and of the role of the high priesthood in Jewish polity at the turn of the Christian era. In this thesis, I argue that Jewish messianism from the mid-second century BCE to the late first-century CE anticipated the culmination of the Jerusalem priestly institution under the rule of the royal messiah. In portraying Jesus as the end-time king, Mark in turn assumes a similar expectation. However, contrary to the majority scholarly view, the earliest Gospel does not repudiate the Israelite worship as such. Rather, Mark depicts Jesus’s stance towards the priests in terms of a call to allegiance and warning of judgement. And it is in the light of its cumulative narrative context that Jesus’s criticism of the Jerusalem shrine should be read. To Mark, that is, the temple will be destroyed because the priests have rejected Israel’s end-time king, placing themselves outside the messianic kingdom. Nevertheless, Jesus will be vindicated over against his enemies as God’s messianic son. Chapter one examines important passages from the Dead Sea Scrolls, and chapter two focuses on texts from the Pseudepigrapha. In chapter three, I argue, against recent critics, that the Markan Jesus is indeed a royal figure. Then, chapter four looks at the relevant passages in Mark 1–10 in which the Jerusalem priests are in view. Finally, chapter five investigates the climactic clash between Jesus and the temple rulers in Mark 11–16 in comparison to my findings in the previous chapters.

Abstract:
My work reflects the change, growth, metamorphosis, duality, and balance that exists in my life. I focus on the process of change and necessity for adaptation. I’m interested in finding balance among the chaos of everyday living. I’m an observer, an introvert, and a thinker. I see and experience opposing forces all around me. Some are simple observations, such as good versus evil, chaos versus order, organic versus geometric, while some are more personal, such as anxiety versus depression, conflict between the inner versus outer self, disorganization versus obsessive compulsive. I’m fascinated by the delicate point at which opposing forces meet to create balance. I use a variety of papers, found objects, fiber, paint, drawing, and stitching to represent things that are picked up along my journey. Using a variety of materials and imagery represents the chaos of life. Editing, rearranging, dissecting, and reassembling these materials and imagery with deliberate choice are a way to balance the chaos I see and experience to take back control.

Abstract:
In my preface I have tried to show what a diary is, why they might be of interest to others, why I think they are valid and should be considered as such. I have defended my diary as being worthy material for a thesis, or myself as worthy of being called a writer. (Traditionally, writing in a diary doesn't qualify one as being a writer, even though you might write millions of pages and spend your entire lives doing it.) Edited selections of my diary make up the body of the thesis. These selections are divided into four main sections which suggested themselves during editing. To summarize the diary as a whole, I would say it's about human relationships.

Bustamante, Mirayo Antonio. "Pain Diary : Pain Management Platform." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för informationsteknologi, 2012. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-177259.

Full text
Abstract:
In the context of current human diseases and conditions, chronic pain is among the most typical reasons for seeking medical attention and is seen in 20 to 50 percent of patients attending primary care (Bajwa Z. H., 2012). With those figures in hand, the medical specialty of pain is of increasing interest to the scientific community and other parties involved in the management of chronic diseases. In the practical sense, chronic pain patients usually have, as of now, regular check-up appointments with their pain specialist, where medication is modified or maintained depending on the frequency and intensity of the patient’s pain episodes. As a matter of fact, between appointments, patients are usually encouraged to write a comprehensive account of their pain episodes and their characteristics in the form of a pain diary. In such diary, they write the intensity of their pain in a relative scale from 1 to 10, the location of the pain in their body, and other relevant comments, namely medication side-effects or the activity they were performing when pain appeared. This set of data is then used by pain specialists to calibrate the patient’s medication and follow their treatment. Pain Diary, the project developed and described in the present document, seeks a more flexible, precise approach for patients to record their pain diaries. The project emphasizes on the interaction between the patient and an electronic pain diary, in the form of an application for the iOS platform. This document discusses the human-computer interaction analysis, usability tests, accessibility tests, and prototypes created to develop a comprehensive user-oriented  solution for patients of cancer and other chronic diseases. Finally, the paper will present a functional prototype  created for iOS, taking into account UX (user experience) design and interaction, as well as a RESTful back-end to consider in a future large scale implementation of the project.

Garner, Soma Art College of Fine Arts UNSW. "The diary of Saga Moor." Awarded By:University of New South Wales. Art, 2009. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/44379.

Full text
Abstract:
The Diary of Saga Moor is the textural component accompanying the studio-based research as part of my MFA. It takes the form of a fictionalised diary the daily keeping of which constituted a durational performance from September 2008 to late September 2009. This action ?? the daily keeping of a fictive diary of an invented individual resulted in a text of 33,000 words, which was edited down to the length of a general MFA research paper. I chose the form of a Performative Diary Text as it allowed me to frame my research into the proscenium arch of the studio as a Superfiction, replete with its own characters whose daily activities articulated the principal topics of my research and by extension my painting, which during the course of my MFA I began to understand was performative. The diary parallels my own life, as history imitates fiction and art imitates life. Saga Moor takes us on a journey through her world and as becomes clear she opens up the studio component to an analysis of its core processes; commencing as a Masters of Fine Arts student, zombies, travel adventures??, her close friend Soma Garner and Moor??s own painting practice. Saga??s story looks at ideas of authenticity, personas, masks and facades through her personal investigation of modern art theory, digital imaging, painting and personal recollections. As her life develops, so does her character and the text is best understood as the mapping of that life. It allows for a contextualization of the research as a performative action, with consequences that over time transformed my practice. The ??life imitating art?? premise though is always a prevalent motif underlying the character of Saga Moor. The science fictional idea of Moor??s eventual demise as the 50-metre woman draws attention to the fallibility of fiction and frailty of the flesh, imagined or real.

Abstract:
The article/presentation analyses data from e-diary taken by 88 students from three groups of pedagogical programs who were studying in the following school years: 2018-2019 and 2019-2020. As part of the internship tasks, the diary had to be written regularly weekly (for a total of 20 or 22 weeks). According to the provided half-standardised e-diary form, every week, the research participants had to document the most significant/successful/problematic situation in their school internship and raise any questions. The database on an e-diary basis contains 1962 situations of internship pedagogical activity. The data presented in the article is general for the whole group of research participants. The data analysis is based on six stages: access to the data, data coding, finding topics, revision of the topics, a summary of the topics and preparation of the report. The article presents how the e-diary was designed and how the e-diary stimulates the metacognitive capacity to reflect upon thinking capacities. The thematic analysis of the entries in e-diary has been conducted according to the following three aspects: emotional, cognitive, and the change in internship activity. The thematic analysis's emotional aspect (which was revealed in the e-diary notes) has been reflected by the dynamics of satisfaction from the professional activity. The intellectual aspect has been revealed by the dynamics of changes in students' self-estimation, attitude towards learning, and the teaching profession. The diaries provided the opportunity to analyse the learning situations via descriptions in the e-diary and the participant's self-reflections on their gained internship experience.
