Abstract:
The dehydrogenation of various 2,5-diaryl substituted ∆2-oxazolines with either Br2/LiBr/CaCO3 (molar ratio 1.05 : 2 : 3) or CuBr2/LiBr/CaCO3 (molar ratio 2 : 1 : 3) in refluxing o-dichlorobenzene gives the corresponding oxazole up to 87% yield. Free radical benzylic bromination followed by dehydrobromination is the expected dehydrogenation mechanism. The successful application of the reagent combination for this transformation is in contrast to standard dehydrogenation reagents, including N-bromosuccinimide, 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone, chloranil, NiO2 and active γ-MnO2.

AbstractA facile and unprecedented synthesis of 2,3-diiodinated or 2,6-diiodinated diaryl ether/thioether derivatives through regioselective Ullmann-type cross couplings of 5-substituted 1,2,3-triiodobenzenes and phenols/thiophenols is described. Remarkably, the coupling reactions are simply controlled by the type of nucleophiles and the nature of C5 substituent at 1,2,3-triiodoarenes providing the internal or terminal coupling products in high regioselectivity and good isolated yields. Noticeable steric and electronic effects were clearly observed on both 1,2,3-triiodoarenes and nucleophiles.

This chapter investigates the modernist credentials of Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler by considering the title character as an example of what Kierkegaard in Either—Or calls an “aesthetic” agent. Kierkegaard did not influence Ibsen in the writing of the play; rather, the claim is that the portrayal, especially of the extremely reflective aesthete of the “Seducer’s Diary,” is a formidable lens through which to view Hedda’s agency as a form of radical subjectivity. The focus of this chapter is the use of video-diaries in social research. The aim is to examine and reflect upon the particular ethical terrain and situated ethics of using visual diary method in social science research with different participant groups who arguably present specific ethical concerns, including children and older people, people with disabilities (either physical, cognitive, or psychiatric), and older people. The authors present a discussion of the specific ethical considerations arising from the use of this method due to the particular type of data it generates, namely audio and moving visual data. As such, the process of creating a video diary and the procedures involved in collecting and analysing video diary data are fundamentally different from a paper-based (non-digital) diary. For these reasons, it is important to step back and reflect on the situated ethics, including the digital ethics encountered when using this method.

Abstract:
The ‘aesthetic’ is, for Kierkegaard, the condition in which most people live, a condition he explores through his ‘pseudonymous’ writings, in which his text is supposedly the product of an author other than himself. By such indirection, Kierkegaard is able both to work within the ‘aesthetic’ in his creation of a work of fiction and, at same time, to critique it. It was a technique first developed in ‘The Seducer’s Diary’ section of Either/Or, whose plot is recapitulated in Spark’s The Bachelors. Kierkegaard’s fear of the power of the aesthetic is repeated in Spark’s novels, in which characters like Patrick Seton in The Bachelors or Jean Brodie in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie try to aestheticise the world in which they live in order to gain control over it. The aesthetic offers them a false sense of having escaped from time into eternity, an escape that their author resists even when she herself cannot escape the aesthetic medium of her art.

This chapter traces nearly ninety years of reading and writing on Virginia Woolf in Uruguay, focusing first on her early critical reception and then on distinguished Uruguayan writers who either explicitly or implicitly dialogue with her life and works. The study begins with Victoria Ocampo’s early engagements with Woolf’s works, which spurred translations initially on Orlando and A Writer’s Diary in the journals Sur, Marcha and Número. It then discusses the cultural context and early critical reception of Woolf in Uruguay, followed by the ways Stephen Daldry’s 2002 film The Hours kindled major interest in Woolf studies, leading many to re-read Mrs Dalloway and her other works. The chapter then moves on to consider Woolf’s influence on two major Uruguayan writers: Armonía Somers and Antonio Larreta. The final section looks at contemporary women writers who explicitly cite or ‘reverberate’ with Woolf: Cristina Peri Rossi, Alicia Migdal, Fernanda Trías and María Sánchez.

Managing customer service is critical for both nonprofit and for-profit dial-up modem Internet service providers. When system operators face excess demand, they can either add capacity or adapt their management techniques to deal with their limited resources—this article considers the latter. We examine system configuration options and the resultant effects on customer service levels in a simulated dial-up modem pool operation. Specifically, we look at a single pool operation and examine the effects of imposing time limits in a seriously overloaded system. We analyze the results on several key customer service measures. The results show that imposing these limits will have a distinct, nonlinear impact on these measures. Customer productivity and actual system load are shown to have major impacts on the performance measures. Interactions between several system and environmental parameters are also discussed.

Ansa-bridged prodiginines include (+)-roseophilin B 3 and streptorubin B. The observation that streptorubin B potentiated apoptopic signaling in cell culture led to the development of obatoclax, currently being evaluated for the treatment of leukemia. Patrick G. Harran of UCLA devised (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2013, 135, 3788) what promises to be a general route to the prodiginines, a key step of which was the cyclization of 1 to 2. In planning the synthesis of 1, the authors took advantage of the relative inertness of a monosubstituted alkene. Friedel-Crafts acylation of 5 proceeded smoothly without affecting the distal double bond. Reduction then completed the preparation of 7. The preparation of 1 continued from the pyrrole 9, prepared from the pyridine 8. Addition of the derived enoate to the aldehyde 10 proceeded smoothly, to give, after oxidation and acid-mediated rearrangement, the furan 12. Selective metalation followed by carboxylation gave the acid 13, which was combined with 7 to give 15. Deprotonation of 15 gave an intermediate that reacted primarily on the pyrrole N. This intermediate was then reacted with diethylchlorophosphite to give, after oxidation, the phosphoramide 16. Advantage was then taken of the organometallic reactivity of the monosubstituted alkene of 16, as Ru-mediated cross metathesis with 17 followed by reduction completed the preparation of 1. The diheteroaryl ketone of 1 is not enolizable. On exposure to KHMDS, the dialkyl ketone will be deprotonated reversibly. Either enolate could add to the diheteroaryl ketone, but only the adduct from deprotonation of the methylene could go on to alkene formation. This net dehydration may likely be driven by phosphoryl transfer to the intermediate alkoxide. The enone 2 is prochiral. Hydrogenation with an enantiopure catalyst proceeded with high de and 67% ee. Remediated intramolecular Friedel-Crafts addition of the dialkyl ketone to the pyrrole followed by acid-mediated rearrangement then delivered (+)-roseophilin 3. There are several points along this synthesis at which diversity could be introduced. This should enable detailed structure–activity studies of the prodiginines.

Abstract:
Broadband is a term that describes the Internet as a function of high-speed data connections and large bandwidth. The Federation Communication Commission (FCC) defines broadband service as data transmission speeds exceeding 200 kilobits per second (Kbps), or 200,000 bits per second, in at least one direction, either downstream or upstream. Its fundamental ability to bring about change in the socioeconomic fabric hinges on it being a medium for greater amount of data transmission. Briefly, high capacity bandwidth allows greater amount of information to be transmitted which is the essence of all applications and communications. It is widely predicted that Internet through broadband will quickly penetrate the residential markets that is in line with the National Broadband Plan (NBP) that focuses on infrastructure readiness and market penetration, expediting the rollout of broadband using both fixed and wireless access. The first in the list of 10 National Policy Objectives as stated in the Communications & Multimedia Act (CMA) 1998 reports the aspiration of turning Malaysia into a communications and multimedia global hub. Hashim (2006) states that a secretariat has been formed to roll out the NBP to ensure its success and to achieve the 10% of the population by 2008. Indeed, one of the fundamental strategies to accomplish such a vision is to put in place an efficient broadband network and ensure sufficient subscription to the services. Broadband is different from conventional dial-up services due to its many enhanced capabilities. It provides access to a wide range of Internet services and applications like streaming media, Internet phone, online gaming, and other interactive services. Many of these current and newly developed services are “bandwidth hungry,” thus requiring large amounts of data transfer at excessively fast speed, which may not be technically feasible with dial-up service. Therefore, broadband service may be increasingly necessary to access a full range of services and opportunities beyond what a dial-up service could potentially offer. Many residential customers who have been using traditional dial-up have been migrating to broadband. The constantly connected Internet accessibility remains another lucrative benefit for broadband converts as compared to the dial-up technology. Broadband technology does not block phone lines nor requires one to reconnect to the network after logging off. The dedicated connection for the user translates into less delay in transmission of content. A faster connection speed could allow users to access a wide range of resources, services, and products.

Abstract:
Preferential trade agreements (PTAs) are en vogue both as policy tool, as well as research subject. We do not beg to differ. In this paper, inspired by the in-going negotiations between the EU (European Union) and the US (United States) on the TTIP (Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership), we ask whether the conclusion of the agreement will, among other things, signal fewer disputes between the two partners before the WTO. This could happen either because there will be a forum diversion (litigate before the bilateral forum with the same or different intensity), or because differences of opinion will be addressed in extra-judicial manner. Our prediction is that, judging from past behaviour, e.g. the amount of litigation between the EU and the US with their preferential partners before and after they had signed an agreement with them, it is quite likely that they will litigate less against each other before the WTO. Without assigning causal relationship to the signature of a bilateral agreement and the amount of litigation between preferential partners, we show that there is inverse correlation between the two. It remains to be seen whether the WTO will profit or suffer from the likelihood of fewer disputes between the two largest trading partners.

Abstract:
In July of 1969 the Apollo 11 spacecraft emerged from the dark side of the moon and the on-board camera panned through the vast emptiness of outer space. Against the backdrop of interstellar night hung the great ball of earth, with the intense blue of its oceans and the delicate ochres of its landmasses shimmering beneath the vibrant and translucent layer of its atmosphere. In the shock of this visual moment, distances between us contracted; boundaries and borders ceased to exist. But the impression that sent the adrenaline flowing through my veins was that the teeming billions of organisms writhing about under the protective layer of the atmosphere were not separate—they were interdependent, fluid, and interactive aspects of the one organic dance of the planet’s life. The preceding paragraph, an entry form my diary written a few days after images of the whole earth first appeared on television, cannot be classed as scientific analysis. But it is entirely consistent with what the new story of science has revealed about the relationship between human and environmental systems in biological reality. The large problem here is that the political and economic narratives that now serve as the basis for coordinating global human activities are premised on scientifically outmoded assumptions about this relationship in the old story of classical physics. And this problem is further complicated by the fact that the view of this relationship that is still widely viewed as scientific in Darwin’s theory of evolution is also premised on these scientifically outmoded assumptions. Darwin went public with his theory for the first time in a paper presented to the Linnean Society in 1848. This paper begins with the following sentence: “All nature is at war, one organism with another, or with external nature.” In The Origins of Species , Darwin is more specific about the character of this war: “There must be in every case a struggle for existence, either one individual with another of the same species, or with the individuals of distinct species, or with the physical conditions of life.”

An original model is presented that relates the rate of National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) water use permit violations and reduced capacity events (dial-back) at once-through cooled thermoelectric power plants to electricity demand and ambient environmental conditions using historical data. 31 percent of U.S. generation capacity is composed of thermoelectric facilities that use once-through (open loop) cooling [1]. Open loop systems have substantial water demands, which put energy facilities and downstream ecosystems at risk during extreme climate events (e.g. heat waves,

Abstract:
Proper shaft-to-shaft alignment during normal machinery operation is essential for improved machinery reliability. Having the proper tools to perform an accurate coupling alignment are critical to maximized maintenance efficiency. Improvements in hardware and software technology have greatly simplified coupling alignment procedures. A comprehensive machine alignment consists of two elements: measurement of the shaft-to-shaft alignment and measurement of the thermal growth and dynamic movement of each bearing housing. Accurate measurement of these elements should be used to position the cold al
