Abstract:
The current study contributes to the analysis of the constructing process of the contemporaneous scene, by verifying the work by Enrique Diaz (director Cia. dos Atores), focusing on his work called Ensaio.Hamlet. This study also establishes considerations on new theatre/drama methods which do not agree with the conventional drama standard, by examining how construction of scenes, dramatic art, actors acting and of the theatre timing are structured. The purpose of this study is, besides to confirm the techniques developed by Enrique in his play Ensaio.Hamlet, which are characteristics of the new theatre, also to record the creation procedures by one of the most profitable contemporaneous artists, by contributing then with the history record of the Brazilian theatre.

Abstract:

Junot Diaz employs a variety of postmodernist literary strategies in The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, such as conflating (and confusing) the role (and identity) of author and narrator, creating a parallel fictional (and semi-fictional) subtext in the form of numerous, often detailed footnotes, and incorporating a hybrid mixture of discourses throughout a self-referential, apparently self-undermining narrative. Yet by means of his persistent satirical tone, pervasive irony, occasional explicit commentary, and thematic inferences, Diaz simultaneously challenges the core tenets of postmodernist-poststructuralist theory. Diaz's creative concerns interrogate the notion of constructed histories, reestablish distinctions within binaries, and defy the poststructuralist prohibition against grand narratives, while contesting the postmodernist tendency toward moral and cultural relativism. Diaz appears to be consciously inviting a poststructuralist reading, even as he simultaneously undermines any possibility for such a theoretical analysis ever succeeding in fully coming to terms with his work. In effect, Diaz redirects the lens of the postmodernist-poststructuralist perspective back on itself, questioning its basic assumptions. Diaz creates a unique, innovative literary language in The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, borrowing tropes from Dominican folklore and popular superstition, mixing in idioms and memes from sci-fi, horror, fantasy, Japanese animes and North American movies, television serials, comic books, hip-hop, and urban diction, in order to tell a story that reawakens repressed memories of historical trauma, and enhances awareness of egregious contemporary injustice. Diaz focuses on the devastating trajectory of the imperialist enterprise in the Western hemisphere since 1492, highlighting the rapacious ideology that ruthlessly engenders this ongoing project of exploitation, domination, and oppression. In setting private aggrandizement above collective wellbeing, the imperial mentality causes incalculable, completely unnecessary suffering, beginning with genocide against the native population, and extending into the extreme social disparities of the neoliberal present; the predatory practices of this avaricious agenda have become so destructive that they now threaten the very survival of the human species. Ruthless greed is the curse that afflicts us; the only possible counter spell that can save us will be a courageous return to instinctive solidarity, with timely recourse to the healing power of human love.

Abstract:
Water resources demand and natural disasters related to hydro meteorological events haveincreased the interest in hydrological studies in Panama. Runoff estimations are importantfor effective water resources management in any catchment, but the limited quantity andquality of the available hydrological and meteorological data in Panama make it hard forresearchers to come to conclusive statements that can help in good planning. This issue hasto be addressed, but meanwhile, the challenge is to try to understand the hydrologicalprocesses occurring in any catchment with the available data. The relationship between rainfall and runoff in the Juan Diaz River basin is not wellunderstood and its fast response due to high rainfall intensities in the area is a concern inthe community and authorities. The meteorological and hydrological data in the Juan DiazRiver basin are also limited. The main objective of this thesis was to establish how well theJuan Diaz River basin can be hydrologically represented by records of the availableinstrumentation. This was performed with a hydrological, WASMOD, and a statistical model, linear multiple regression. Both models simulated daily and monthly runoff for a period of 21years. For the long term water balance, a graph showing discharge against rainfall data wasplotted in the yearly scale to establish a relationship between the two variables.Precipitation records from an active meteorological station, which was the closest to thebasin from the ones with available records, were used in this study to estimate the arealmean precipitation of the basin, since nowadays there are no active meteorological stationswithin the basin. It was not possible to represent the Juan Diaz River basin well with the two models in thedaily and monthly resolution. Uncertainties in the precipitation input and in the dischargeoutput data were considered to be the reasons for the poor simulations. That said, it can bestated that the available instrumentation at this point is not sufficient for modeling. In thelong term water balance, the instrumentation can be used for water estimations, but carehas to be taken if this approach is used since the limited quantity of data in this scale werescattered around the predictions.Efforts have to be made to encourage decision makers to increase the availableinstrumentation in the Juan Diaz River basin, in order to make accurate simulations orforecasting that will better support water resources management.

Abstract:
Squeeze Film Dampers (SFDs) are commonly used in turbomachinery to dampen shaft vibrations in rotor-bearing systems. The main factor deterring the success of analytical models for the prediction of SFD’s performance lays on the modeling of dynamic film rupture. Usually, the cavitation models developed for journal bearings are applied to SFDs. Yet, the characteristic motion of the SFD results in the entrapment of air into the oil film, producing a bubbly mixture that cannot be represented by these models. There is a need to identify and understand the parameters that affect air entrainment and subsequent formation of a bubbly air-oil mixture within the lubricant film. A previous model by Diaz and San Andre´s advanced estimation of the amount of film-entrapped air, based on a non-dimensional number that related both geometrical and operating parameters but limited to the short bearing approximation (i.e., neglecting circumferential flow). The present study extends their work to consider the effects of finite length-to-diameter ratios. This is achieved by means of a finite volume integration of the two-dimensional, Newtonian, compressible Reynolds equation combined with the effective mixture density and viscosity defined in the work of Diaz and San Andre´s. A flow balance at the open end of the film is devised to estimate the amount of air entrapped within the film. The results show, in dimensionless plots, a map of the amount of entrained air as a function of the Feed-Squeeze Flow Number, defined by Diaz and San Andre´s, and the Length-to-Diameter Ratio of the Damper. Entrained air is shown to decrease as the L/D ratio increases, going from the approximate solution of Diaz and San Andre´s for infinitely short SFDs down to no air entrainment for an infinite length SFD. The results of this research are of immediate engineering applicability. Furthermore, they represent a firm step to advance the understanding of the effects of air entrapment on the performance of SFDs.

Abstract:
Abstract It is now known the generally it can be demonstrated that artificial neural network (ANN), particularly the fully-connected feedforward configuration with backward propagation error-correction routine, can be a rather effective and accurate tool to correlate performance data of thermal devices such as heat exchangers (Sen and Yang, 2000; Kalogirou, 1999). Good examples are the recent demonstrations for the compact fin-tube heat exchangers (Diaz et al., 1999a; Yang et al., 2000; Pacheco-Vega et al., 1999) including those with complex geometries and also two-phase evaporators (Pacheco-Vega et al., 2000) as well as the dynamic modeling of such heat exchangers and their adaptive control (Diaz et al., 1999b; Diaz et al., 2000). Unfortunately, despite such successes, there are still implementation issues of the ANN analysis which lead to uncertainties in its applications and the achieved results. The present paper discusses such issues and the current practices in dealing with them. Those that will be discussed include the number of hidden layers, the number of nodes in each hidden layer, the range within which the input-output data are normalized, the initial assignment of weights and biases, the selection of training data sets, and the training rate. As will be shown, the specific choices are by no means trivial, and yet are rather important in achieving good ANN results in any given application. Since there are no general sound theoretical basis for such choices at the present time, past experience and numerical experimentation are often the best guides. However, many of these choices and issues relating to them involve optimization. As a result. Some of the existing optimization algorithms may prove to be useful and highly desirable in this regard. The current on-going research to provide some rational basis in these issues will also be discussed. Finally, it will also be mentioned that successfully implemented ANNs have many additional uses in practice. Examples include parameter sensitivity analysis, training, design of new experiments, and clustering of data sets.

Full text
Abstract:
Squeeze Film Dampers (SFDs) are bearings that support large motion amplitudes when traversing rotor-bearing systems critical speeds. Actual practice demands bearings with operating conditions of low oil supply pressure and high frequency. In open-ended SFDs, large amplitudes of journal motion draw air into the film gap. The air ingested and entrapped results in a bubbly mixture that affects the dynamic performance and the overall damping capability of the SFDs. Diaz and San Andre´s [11] developed a model to predict the amount of air ingested into SFDs with open-ends. They proposed an innovative non-dimensional number to estimate the amount of air entrapped in the film gap, but their analytical results are limited to short length bearings. Mendez et al. [13] extended the results of Diaz and San Andre´s to finite length bearings, devising a Finite Volume Method (FVM) scheme. Even though their research presented new and significant results, they lack wider applicability that includes different geometries or boundary conditions. The present research proposes the solution of the Reynolds equation by the finite element method. Results computed by this formulation explore non-dimensional maps for determination of the amount of entrapped air. The results show that for fixed lubricant properties the amount of entrapped air depends exclusively on three dimensionless parameters: feed-squeeze flow number, length to diameter ratio, and dimensionless orbit radius.

Abstract:
University dropout is one of the main problems of the Spanish university system due to its high rates. The latest report issued by the Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN, 2020) shows that more than 30% of students drop out of an undergraduate degree program. In order to explore the phenomenon, in line with the scientific literature, we have focused on identifying personal and family variables associated with university dropout. Using an ex post facto, quantitative, descriptive and causal design methodology, we observed significant relationships between the dependent variable “completion of university degree” and the independent variables “age”, “marital status” and “number of siblings”. In agreement with other researches (Belloc et al, 2010; Diaz Peralta, 2008; Lizarte Simon, 2017) we conclude that university dropout is a multicausal phenomenon that needs to be fully understood. This will allow to maximize the use of resources allocated to higher education and optimize university access, permanence and quality policies.
