Abstract:
The current study contributes to the analysis of the constructing process of the contemporaneous scene, by verifying the work by Enrique Diaz (director Cia. dos Atores), focusing on his work called Ensaio.Hamlet. This study also establishes considerations on new theatre/drama methods which do not agree with the conventional drama standard, by examining how construction of scenes, dramatic art, actors acting and of the theatre timing are structured. The purpose of this study is, besides to confirm the techniques developed by Enrique in his play Ensaio.Hamlet, which are characteristics of the new theatre, also to record the creation procedures by one of the most profitable contemporaneous artists, by contributing then with the history record of the Brazilian theatre.

Abstract:

Junot Diaz employs a variety of postmodernist literary strategies in The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, such as conflating (and confusing) the role (and identity) of author and narrator, creating a parallel fictional (and semi-fictional) subtext in the form of numerous, often detailed footnotes, and incorporating a hybrid mixture of discourses throughout a self-referential, apparently self-undermining narrative. Yet by means of his persistent satirical tone, pervasive irony, occasional explicit commentary, and thematic inferences, Diaz simultaneously challenges the core tenets of postmodernist-poststructuralist theory. Diaz's creative concerns interrogate the notion of constructed histories, reestablish distinctions within binaries, and defy the poststructuralist prohibition against grand narratives, while contesting the postmodernist tendency toward moral and cultural relativism. Diaz appears to be consciously inviting a poststructuralist reading, even as he simultaneously undermines any possibility for such a theoretical analysis ever succeeding in fully coming to terms with his work. In effect, Diaz redirects the lens of the postmodernist-poststructuralist perspective back on itself, questioning its basic assumptions. Diaz creates a unique, innovative literary language in The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, borrowing tropes from Dominican folklore and popular superstition, mixing in idioms and memes from sci-fi, horror, fantasy, Japanese animes and North American movies, television serials, comic books, hip-hop, and urban diction, in order to tell a story that reawakens repressed memories of historical trauma, and enhances awareness of egregious contemporary injustice. Diaz focuses on the devastating trajectory of the imperialist enterprise in the Western hemisphere since 1492, highlighting the rapacious ideology that ruthlessly engenders this ongoing project of exploitation, domination, and oppression. In setting private aggrandizement above collective wellbeing, the imperial mentality causes incalculable, completely unnecessary suffering, beginning with genocide against the native population, and extending into the extreme social disparities of the neoliberal present; the predatory practices of this avaricious agenda have become so destructive that they now threaten the very survival of the human species. Ruthless greed is the curse that afflicts us; the only possible counter spell that can save us will be a courageous return to instinctive solidarity, with timely recourse to the healing power of human love.

Abstract:
Water resources demand and natural disasters related to hydro meteorological events haveincreased the interest in hydrological studies in Panama. Runoff estimations are importantfor effective water resources management in any catchment, but the limited quantity andquality of the available hydrological and meteorological data in Panama make it hard forresearchers to come to conclusive statements that can help in good planning. This issue hasto be addressed, but meanwhile, the challenge is to try to understand the hydrologicalprocesses occurring in any catchment with the available data. The relationship between rainfall and runoff in the Juan Diaz River basin is not wellunderstood and its fast response due to high rainfall intensities in the area is a concern inthe community and authorities. The meteorological and hydrological data in the Juan DiazRiver basin are also limited. The main objective of this thesis was to establish how well theJuan Diaz River basin can be hydrologically represented by records of the availableinstrumentation. This was performed with a hydrological, WASMOD, and a statistical model, linear multiple regression. Both models simulated daily and monthly runoff for a period of 21years. For the long term water balance, a graph showing discharge against rainfall data wasplotted in the yearly scale to establish a relationship between the two variables.Precipitation records from an active meteorological station, which was the closest to thebasin from the ones with available records, were used in this study to estimate the arealmean precipitation of the basin, since nowadays there are no active meteorological stationswithin the basin. It was not possible to represent the Juan Diaz River basin well with the two models in thedaily and monthly resolution. Uncertainties in the precipitation input and in the dischargeoutput data were considered to be the reasons for the poor simulations. That said, it can bestated that the available instrumentation at this point is not sufficient for modeling. In thelong term water balance, the instrumentation can be used for water estimations, but carehas to be taken if this approach is used since the limited quantity of data in this scale werescattered around the predictions.Efforts have to be made to encourage decision makers to increase the availableinstrumentation in the Juan Diaz River basin, in order to make accurate simulations orforecasting that will better support water resources management.

"The aesthetics of absence and duration in the post-trauma cinema of Lav Diaz." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/22990.

Full text
Abstract:
Aiming to make an intervention in both emerging Slow Cinema and classical Trauma Cinema scholarship, this thesis demonstrates the ways in which the post-trauma cinema of Filipino filmmaker Lav Diaz merges aesthetics of cinematic slowness with narratives of post-trauma in his films Melancholia (2008), Death in the Land of Encantos (2007) and Florentina Hubaldo, CTE (2012). Diaz has been repeatedly considered as representative of what Jonathan Romney termed in 2004 “Slow Cinema”. The director uses cinematic slowness for an alternative approach to an on-screen representation of post-trauma. Contrary to popular trauma cinema, Diaz’s portrait of individual and collective trauma focuses not on the instantenaeity but on the duration of trauma. In considering trauma as a condition and not as an event, Diaz challenges the standard aesthetical techniques used in contemporary Trauma Cinema, as highlighted by Janet Walker (2001, 2005), Susannah Radstone (2001), Roger Luckhurst (2008) and others. Diaz’s films focus instead on trauma’s latency period, the depletion of a survivor’s resources, and a character’s slow psychological breakdown. Slow Cinema scholarship has so far focused largely on the films’ aesthetics and their alleged opposition to mainstream cinema. Little work has been done in connecting the films’ form to their content. Furthermore, Trauma Cinema scholarship, as trauma films themselves, has been based on the immediate and most radical signs of post-trauma, which are characterised by instantaneity; flashbacks, sudden fears of death and sensorial overstimulation. Following Lutz Koepnick’s argument that slowness offers “intriguing perspectives” (Koepnick, 2014: 191) on how trauma can be represented in art, this thesis seeks to consider the equally important aspects of trauma duration, trauma’s latency period and the slow development of characteristic symptoms. With the present work, I expand on current notions of Trauma Cinema, which places emphasis on speed and the unpredictability of intrusive memories. Furthermore, I aim to broaden the area of Slow Cinema studies, which has so far been largely focused on the films’ respective aesthetics, by bridging form and content of the films under investigation. Rather than seeing Diaz’s slow films in isolation as a phenomenon of Slow Cinema, I seek to connect them to the existing scholarship of Trauma Cinema studies, thereby opening up a reading of his films.

Lopes, De Moura Marcilene.

Abstract:
The international recognition of the director Enrique Diaz has asserted itself for morethan twenty years. His artistic approach is very influenced by performance and it oftenuses metatheatrical texts. His reflexive productions focus on their own creative processes. They highlight the acting of the actor and they use the media in a selfreferential and critical way. Director Enrique Diaz' creation is approached for this thesis in a systemic way, using as a transdisciplinary methodological reference, the computer systems called fuzzy systems. Therefore, it allows to study his approach through different observation scales and varied points of view. First of all, its artistical experience is analyzed with a global scale: main themes and plays, specialy the actor's work. The overall observation offers substrate to a dynamic modeling, that is to say, the development of hypothesis regarding the general operation of Enrique Dias' creating system, and his main course of actions during the process of different plays. As a validating strategy, the play Gaivota - tema para um conto curto (Seagull-Play/La Mouette), is analyzed taking in consideration the operational of a fuzzy system - fuzzification, inferences and defuzzification - that is to say, according to the initial purposes of the project, the aesthetic references for its creation and the main procedures used for improvising (Viewpoints and Composition) and itsconnections/consequences/ to the play. The objective is to show the originality of theartistic approach of Enrique Diaz using a methodology based on the fuzzy system andinspired by his own approach

Parent, Diane. "Traduire la "dominicanidad" de Junot Diaz dans "The Sun, the Moon, the Stars" et "Wildwood"." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/23991.

Full text
Abstract:
Dominican-born writer Junot Díaz emigrated to the United States at age 7, with his mother and older brother, to join his father, who had emigrated five years earlier. The success of Díaz’s 2008 Pulitzer Prize–winning novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, and two short story collections, Drown (1996) and This Is How You Lose Her (2012), has made him an important figure in the U.S. literary world, as will be shown in this thesis. This thesis includes an analysis and commented French translation of two of his short stories, namely “The Sun, the Moon, the Stars” and “Wildwood.” It also discusses the ways in which the short story is a literary genre that suits Díaz’s text, poetics and aesthetics. “The Sun, the Moon, the Stars” and “Wildwood” are good examples of the author’s inimitable style, which is characterized by syncopated sentence rhythms and the use of Spanglish. English sentences are peppered with Spanish, which interferes with and breaks up the narration. Díaz uses Spanglish also as a language strategy that serves his political agenda, namely to affirm his Dominican roots and engage his fellow Dominican-Americans in a direct dialogue, and to remind white readers that English and Spanish influence each other in the U.S. Díaz’s language is musical and vivid, his tone, informal and conversational, and his register, sometimes colloquial—or even vulgar—and sometimes literary. Coarse and vulgar expressions are conveyors of identity and culture that punctuate the statements of Yunior, the narrator in “The Sun, the Moon, the Stars,” like a verbal tic. In “Wildwood” the cursing and swearing come more from the mouth of the furious mother of Lola, the narrator, than from the young woman herself, who seeks a life far from her mother, her home town Paterson, New Jersey, and Spanish. Translating Díaz’s language, a combination of English and a kind of Dominican-American slang, into French is challenging, especially since translators in Canada are faced with choosing between varieties of French that are either too Parisian or too Québécois.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Author and activist Abby Morton Diaz (1821-1904) was a member of the Brook Farm Transcendental community from 1842 until it folded in 1847. Although critics have long recognized that Brook Farm played a role in Diaz's intellectual preparation, they have not attempted to demonstrate its influence through a study of her writings. In this study I will examine in detail two of Diaz's novels and two long essays, with passing references to other works, that reveal how the utopian socialism practiced at Brook Farm influenced Diaz as a writer and reformer. In all her writings Diaz emphasized the importance of education for women so that they may successfully fulfill their roles as wives, mothers, and their children's first teachers. Her philosophy is reflected in the reform initiatives she supported: the Women's Educational and Industrial Union and the Nationalist Party.

_________________________________________________________________________________
ABSTRACT: Porfirio Díaz became constitutional president of Mexico in 1877. Remained in government, through reelections, until 1911, at which time he resigned due to the outbreak of the Mexican Revolution (1910). The corresponding to their years of government period is known as the Porfiriato. About this conjuncture there is ample historical production from the contemporary period the presidency Diaz to the meeting today. The aim of this work was, from a specific literature on the subject and use of primary sources, research the interpretive models over the government of Don Porfirio built between the years 1902 and 1920; ie from the last decade that he remained as president until the end of the first revolutionary phase. The sources used to achieve this goal were six printed works of individuals who wrote about the president and his years of government: El General Porfirio Díaz, by Bernardo Reyes (1902), Mexico: su social evolución, compiled by Justo Sierra Méndez between 1900 and 1902; La sucesión presidencial en 1910: el Partido Nacional Democrático, by Francisco Ignacio Madero (1908); Barbarous Mexico by John Kenneth Turner (1910); De Porfirio Díaz à Francisco Madero: la sucesión dictatorial, written by Luis Lara Pardo in 1912 and El verdadero Díaz y la Revolución (1920 ), by Francisco Bulnes. In these works we see and try to explain the transformations of a discourse, ie, as the reviews of the porfirismo were modified since the last decade of the nineteenth century until 1920. Great father of the nation, as the nineteenth century interpreted the generation of polygraphs, he was represented (especially during the Revolution) as a tyrannical dictator who concentrated in their hands a great deal of political powers and deleted the existing party dynamics in the scenario public of the country.

Micou, Ann McKinstry. "Here in New Jersey| Place in the fiction of Philip Roth, Richard Ford, and Junot Diaz." Thesis, Drew University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3633153.

Abstract:

This dissertation argues that three Pulitzer Prize-winning writers, Philip Roth, Richard Ford, and Junot Díaz—a native, a transplant, and a migrant to New Jersey—convey the impact of place on their characters in an immediate and compelling way. The New Jersey neighborhoods they evoke—a Jewish enclave, a largely white suburb, and an immigrant ghetto—crucially affect their characters' destinies. The introduction defines some narrative elements of "place," presents examples of its use in literary fiction set in New Jersey, and lays the groundwork for close readings of the fiction of Roth, Ford, and Díaz. Each chapter applies to the author's fiction some of the narrative elements defined in the introduction. The chapter on Roth examines the ambience of his Newark neighborhood and its consequences upon his narrators' identities, their feelings of belonging or of alienation, and their ambivalence about whether to stay or leave. While Roth returns to Newark repeatedly in his stories, some of the narrators abandon the place precisely because of its effect on them. The chapter on Ford examines the influence of place on the destiny of his narrator, Frank Bascombe. Frank, a Southern transplant to New Jersey, claims at first that "place means nothing"; he concludes that New Jersey "gives him something" and is where he belongs and wants to stay. The chapter on Díaz investigates the effect of dual places, the Dominican Republic and New Jersey, on the identity and destiny of Yunior, the narrator. The main ramification of place on Yunior's writing is his determination to bear witness to immigrants' voices that have gone unheard, "to sing my community out of silence." The conclusion shows that, despite the differences among the authors in terms of temperament, background, style, and theme, their reactions to place—the narrators' degrees of ambivalence and alienation and concerns about assimilation—have much in common and contribute to the understanding of the primary role of place in fiction and its repercussions upon characters' identities. In sum, place is character is destiny.

Cancer is a desease that occurs in a larger number of people each year. The therapies used to treat it are still not satisfatory. Natural products have been studied to select new compounds capable of reducing tumours and with fewer side effects. The sulfated polysaccharide isolated from the seaweed C. feldmannii (Cf-PLS) was investigated for its antitumor and immunostimulating properties and also for the toxicological aspects related to Cf-PLS treatment. The Cf-PLS did not show any significant in vitro cytotoxic effect, but showed a strong in vivo antitumor effect. The inhibition rates of sarcoma 180 tumor development were 48.16 % and 48.62% at the doses of 10 and 25 mg/kg, respectively, and 68.32% when treated together with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). The histopathological analysis of liver and kidney showed that the kidneys were affected by Cf-PLS-treatment, presenting some focal areas of acute tubular necrosis at the higher dose. Cf-PLS caused considerable changes in renal physiology, as shown by an increase in parameters such as perfusion pressure, renal vascular resistance, glomerular filtration rate, urinary flow and sodium, chloride and potassium excretion. Neither enzymatic activity of alanine aminotransferase, urea nor creatinin levels were significantly altered. In hematological analyses, leucopeny was observed after 5-FU treatment, but this effect was prevented when the treatment was associated with the Cf-PLS. It was also demonstrated that Cf-PLS acts as an immunomodulatory agent, raising the production of specific antibodies, and also increasing the production of OVA-specific antibodies. In addition, it induced a discreet increase of the white pulp and nest of megakaryocytic in spleen of treated mice and the neutrophil migration to the intraperitoneal cavity of mice. In conclusion, Cf-PLS has some interesting antitumour activity that could be associated with its immunostimulanting properties.

Abstract:
This thesis presents close readings of four poets of indigenous nations in North America—Sherwin Bitsui, Natalie Diaz, Allison Adelle Hedge Coke, and Layli Long Soldier—to address techniques of movement in poetry, which I call kinetic poetics, and which are evoked in two main ways: firstly through textual representations and secondly through their gesticulation beyond language, towards the relationship between human bodies and thenon-humans, waterways in particular. How do these kinetics effects—translingualism, iconicity, sound symbolism, lineation, punctuation, form, prosopopoeia—achieve alternative modes of approaching and receiving poetry today? How does each poet’s notion of time contribute to their kinetic representations of a linguistic and/or somatic continuum? More specifically, how do these kinetic nuances ask us to reconsider our perception of colonialextractivism and its inseparability from ecological disruption, affecting indigenous communities in particular, and the ways in which we are complicit? The linguistic questions these poets textually represent are inevitably questions about our bodies, our physical interactions with one another, and with our lands and waters. Language provides a“place of exiting”, or “a place of moving out” (Bitsui, “The Song Within”), towards somatic realities which are decentered from the self, and in relation to a polychronographic present. This somatic and translingual focus marks a distinct space in contemporary poetry, and the complexity of these effects is often overlooked, despite their contributions to contemporary literature at large

Abstract:
During the last half of the nineteenth century, Mexico City residents started to experience an increase in the frequency and intensity of fires. Residents cited the presence of fossil fuels, the introduction of large factories and electrical apparatuses, and the growing population density as the primary reasons that urban fires became more prevalent. Fire hazards acted as catalysts for social change in Mexico's capital. They created a ripple effect across society, altering everything from city planning to medical advancements to business endeavors, shaping the ways that people experienced a period of significant urban growth. Fire forced people to adjust the ways that they lived their lives, the ways that they conducted business, and the ways that they thought about their city. Rather than looking at one great fire, this study contributes to a growing branch of disaster studies that examines the effects of much smaller, but far more frequent hazards. By drawing on the experiences of residents from different social groups (business owners, firemen, engineers, city officials, entrepreneurs, insurance agents, and physicians), this study shows how residents reacted differently to fire and how they feared and coped with the nearly constant presence of risk. Prevailing historiography of this time period in Mexico is often characterized by studies of the top-down projects of the dictator Porfirio Diaz, but this project shows how social actors collectively transformed their city in response to an environmental threat.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis investigates Junot Díaz’s portrayal of the Dominican diaspora in The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (2007) to propose that Junot Díaz’s understanding of belonging approaches Giorgio Agamben’s concept of community as a being together of individuals in an inessential solidarity. The novel presents the marginalized Others of the Dominican diaspora as individuals whose longing for a sense of community problematizes the notion of bounded physical and temporal loci. The characters are never only of one nation or one culture, neither can they be identified as representing a singular race, class, religion, gender, or sexuality. Rather, they occupy multiple realities across contingent temporal registers so that errancy, mutability, and ambivalence characterize their transcultural experience of the quotidian. This being in flux opens liminal spaces from which they can grasp potentiality to refigure the past and interrupt the performance of the present for cultural renovation. Through the lens of Oswald de Andrade’s cultural anthropophagy and postcolonial theorists such as Homi Bhabha, Édouard Glissant and Antonio Benítez-Rojo, this thesis discusses the ways in which Díaz’s text engages readers to re-examine normative paradigms of belonging to imagine sustainable commonalities that do not evince an essence.

Abstract:
My intellectual interests span the Atlantic and are anchored in early modern narrative. Balancing original research, literary analysis and humanist literary criticism, my dissertation, “The Conundrums of Narrative: Cervantes in the Context of the Crónicas de Indias” attempts to bring a fresh understanding on the reciprocal relationship between emerging discourses of the New World and Spain –in particular, the kinds of narrative that coalesce into the (early) modern novel and the equally complex and imaginative forms of narrative on display in the Crónicas de Indias. My inquiry takes up two key sixteenth-century historiographical accounts of the Americas which include Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo’s Sumario de la natural historia de las Indias and Bernal Díaz del Castillo’s Historia verdadera de la conquista de la nueva España. I deploy these texts, which problematize the relationship of history to ‘poetry’ (a category which for early moderns included imaginative prose), to shed new light on the narrative strategies employed in Don Quixote and the Persiles. Along the way, I argue that the significant role that memory and mnemonics play in Cervantes’s imitation of literary models contributes to the epistemological and narratological concerns produced by the New World encounter, and I examine the use of memory in the construction of textual authority. For example: the first portion of my dissertation analyzes the writings of Juan Luis Vives (1492- 1540) as a means to explore the humanist thinking on the writing of history. Vives’ contribution to the practice and rhetoric of history allows me to examine difficulties and paradoxes posed by the interplay of history and poetry in Cervantes.

Abstract:
This study examines three novels by contemporary Caribbean-American authors – Julia Alvarez, Edwidge Danticat and Junot Díaz – which attend to the history of the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. While recent studies on Trujillo focus on the cultural discourses that enabled the dictator to consolidate power and establish hegemony, they neglect subtle forms of resistance. I argue that the three writers attend to various discursive models of masculinity, femininity, and ethnicity through which Trujillo's regime induced individuals to understand their own bodies and the bodies of others. They also seek out and valorize alternative modes of relating to thebody, which enable the characters to formulate new conceptions of resistant subjectivity.

Vera, Monica A. "Taking Issue with History: Empathy and the Ethical Imperatives of Creative Interventions." FIU Digital Commons, 2012. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/776.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to contribute to a dialogue that considers the relationship between history, literature, and empathy as a literary affect. Specifically, I explored sites of literature’s transformative potential as it relates to cultural studies and the ethics of deconstruction. Via a deconstructive, post-colonial reading of Toni Morrison’s Beloved and Junot Díaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, I considered how subjects in our current socio-political moment can feel history. Emerging from a post-structurally mediated engagement with history, signification, and feeling, I argued that empathy, as it is contentiously presented in the context of deconstruction, is not necessarily a reductive or essentialist approach towards relating or “being-with” an-other. Instead, I proposed that the act of reading historiographical novels that take constructions of the Atlantic Slave Trade to task might generate an affective empathy, which could in turn engender a more empathetic relationality and way of being-in-the-world.

Escobar-Wiercinski, Sara. "Subjugated bodies, normalized subjects| Representations of power in the Panamanian literature of Roberto Diaz Herrera, Rose Marie Tapia and Mauro Zuniga Arauz." Thesis, Wayne State University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3646964.

Full text
Abstract:

This dissertation examines the dissemination of power represented in the works of Panamanian writers Roberto Díaz Herrera, Rose Marie Tapia and Mauro Zúñiga Araúz. My work focuses on two important periods in Panama's history: the repressive dictatorial era of Manuel Noriega and the post-dictatorial era during which subjugation and power operate in subtle ways, through institutions, mechanisms of civil society, and globalization. The primary sources are Díaz Herrera's testimony, and the novels of Tapia and Zúñiga Araúz. In my analysis, I draw upon the notions of power, subjugation and normalization developed by the French philosopher Michel Foucault. I also draw upon the thoughts of Mikhail Bahktin, Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud and Beatriz Sarlo.

Chapter one presents the historical overview of Panamanian history and its literature. It shows how power, subjugation and normalization have operated in Panama at different points of its history. Chapter Two analyses the political terror of Noriega through Díaz Herrera's Estrellas clandestinas and Zúñiga Araúz's El chacal del general. Both narratives are challenges against Noriega, using scenes of actual persecutions, disappearances and tortures. Chapter Three explains how Tapia uses Roberto por el buen camino to denounce a wide range of inequalities existing in the post-dictatorial society. She focuses specifically on the culture of violence perpetrated by the underclass. Chapter four analyses how Zúñiga Araúz's Espejo de miserias takes the reader to a deep journey through a diverse range of social problems affecting women in Latin America, focusing on the subjugation and control of women's bodies through prostitution. This chapter uses Foucault's notion of biopower to illustrate how subjugation operates through globalization and the sex trade market. Chapter five uses Tapia's Mujeres en fuga to show globalization and the global market—through casinos and shopping malls—manipulating society, and contributing to Panama's socio-economic fragmentation. In addition to bringing attention to the literature of a country that is often ignored in contemporary Latin American Studies, my analysis demonstrates how these writers examine problems and questions concerning the use and dissemination of power that remain vitally important not only in Panama, but also throughout Latin America.

Mohamad, Aso. "Multilingual literature in a Swedish classroom : A sequential analysis regarding code-switching in This Is How You Lose Her by Junot Diaz."

Abstract:
This essay explores sociolinguistic implications in the novel This Is How You Lose Her by Junot Diaz. I investigate this literary work of Diaz in terms of the usage of code-switching by applying an adaptation of conversation analysis and a theoretical framework provided by Brown and Levinson (1999) that suggests that code-switching can be used to achieve interactional goals with other speakers. Also, I argue for widespread support of allowing multilingualism to be a more significant part of learning in the Swedish classroom. The conclusion drawn from this study tells us more about how politeness and code-switching can be applied in literary form and that different switches are used in different speech acts depending on which face is being threatened.  I have also presented examples of how teachers can use Diaz’s novel to conduct a literary or linguistic project using multilingual literature to raise awareness of sociolinguistics and language variations in alignment with The Swedish National Agency for Education (2011) directives
