A diblock copolymer of Poly (Styrene-b- [ethylene-co-propylene]) has been used as a stabilizer in non-aqueous dispersion polymerizations of methyl methacrylate and vinyl acetate in n-heptane. The particles thus produced were stabilized by well defined surface layers of ethylene-propylene copolymer chains. The dependence of the particle size on the stabilizer, monomer and initiator concentrations was studied. Both seeded and one-shot polymerization techniques were investigated. Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerisation has been used to synthesise a range of amphiphilic diblock copolymers. These diblock copolymers undergo polymerisation-induced self-assembly (PISA) to form spherical, worm-like or vesicular nano-objects, depending on the target diblock composition and the reaction conditions. Block copolymers containing pendant pyrene, terpyridine and poly(3- hexylthiophene) moieties with different block ratios and chain lengths were synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The block copolymers obtained had narrow molecular weight distribution. The applications of these polymers for non-covalent functionalization of carbon nanotubes and in photovoltaic devices were studied. The phase separation behavior of three conformationally asymmetric diblock copolymer systems has been investigated: poly(butadiene-b-α-methylbenzyl isocyanide), poly(styrene-b-1,3-cyclohexadiene), and poly(styrene- b-carbodiimide). Kuhn length differences between the two blocks of each of these three systems provide rough estimates of their conformational asymmetry and classify these three as intermediate in asymmetry, compared to other literature systems.
