Abstract:
Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum is the first edition of a book for all audiences but especially targeting children. The story follows Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum as they explore wonderland, encountering famous characters including the Queen of Hearts, the Catepillar, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, and the White Rabbit, as well as a set of new characters at well. The account is entirely fictional, and any character or event that bares any resemblance to a real person or something that happened in real life is completely and only a coincidence. I would like to give a special thanks to all my friends that helped in the writing process; I would write an extensive list, but not everyone has a facebook and I don't want to spell anyone's name wrong. Thanks guys. The book is meant to be a fun and light read; enjoy.

Brown, Iain M. "Deglaciation of the Dee Valley, N.E. Scotland." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 1992. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=128379.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to analyse the pattern of deglaciation in the Dee valley and, in particular, to deduce whether this occurred by active frontal retreat or by areal stagnation and downwasting. This has important implications for palaeo-environmental reconstructions of the Lateglacial period. The main techniques used were morphological mapping and construction of sediment-landform assemblages, facilitated by borehole records of the British Geological Survey. Several sections were available which have not previously been logged. The area of study has been sub-divided into three main sectors: Lower Deeside, Feughside and Upper Deeside. In each case, conclusive evidence was obtained that the last (Devensian) ice-sheet decayed predominantly by active retreat but with a stagnant margin. Linear assemblages of ice-marginal topography frequently indicate a lobate ice-front based in the main Dee valley. The closely-spaced alignment of ridges in these assemblages suggests that they represent stillstands which interrupted retreat of the ice front. The presence of ice in the main Dee valley during deglaciation meant that drainage of tributary valleys was blocked. This resulted in formation of glacial lakes as indicated by glaciolacustrine sediments, deltas and overflow channels. Topography was a major control on the pattern of deglaciation, notably in areas of compressive ice flow where supraglacial sedimentation resulted in hummocky, ice-marginal deposits. These have previously been mis-interpreted as evidence for glacial readvances initiated by climatic change. The sedimentary successions in ice-marginal ridges strongly resemble those recorded from present-day sub-polar glaciers (eg. Svalbard). This implies that deglaciation in NE Scotland occurred whilst the climate was still cold, which is consistent with evidence from the coastal zone indicating that deglaciation was in progress by 15 ka BP. Much of the ice-sheet over NE Scotland therefore disappeared before the global climatic amelioration that occurred at 13.5-13 ka BP.

Abstract:
Identifying how the dominant runoff processes of sub-catchments integrate to determine hydrological responses at larger scales (> 1000 km2) remains a major challenge in hydrology. At these larger scales, major environmental differences such as climate, geology and land use may have increased influence on runoff dynamics. While process investigations at smaller scales (< 10km2) have been important in establishing the influence of topography and soils on runoff generation, more research at larger spatial scales is needed, since it is at such scales where important water management decisions are made in relation to applied problems such as floods and droughts. Tracers, such as stable isotopes of water, have proven utility as tools since they reflect the integration of processes at much smaller scales. In addition, geochemical tracers, such as alkalinity, help identify the geographical sources of runoff in larger catchments. This thesis focuses on their use to study catchment hydrological processes in the River Dee (~2,100 km2), NE Scotland, and to determine how these processes integrate at larger scales. Runoff from soil derived hydrological responsive pathways dominates during high flow facilitating a relatively rapid translation of precipitation isotope signatures into the channel network. Increased coverage of responsive soils resulted in reduced Mean Transit Time (MTT) estimates. High coverage of freely draining soils and certain landscape features often resulted in greater MTT estimates. Small scale heterogeneity appears to be averaged out at larger scales with MTTs indicating that the montane headwaters of the river are the dominant source of runoff. Transit Time Distributions (TTDs) suggest that catchment waters may have transit times of less than 2 weeks during high flows and greater than 10 years in summer baseflows.

Abstract:

This dissertation examines hip-hop fatherhood narratives from 2010-2015 influenced by drug addiction, mass incarceration, underground economies, trauma, and dysfunctional co-parenting. Explicitly, the paper explores how marginalized, urban African American dads are imagined as protectors, providers, and/or surrogates in hiphop lyricism. Additionally, the research pays attention to hip-hop artists’ depiction of identity orchestration and identity formation of black adolescents and patriarchs by utilizing David Wall’s theories on identity stasis. Moreover, the dissertation critically analyzes hip-hop lyrics that reflect different concepts of maleness such as hypermasculine, the complex cool, biblical, heroic, and hegemonic masculinities. In sum, the paper examines rap lyrics use of mimicry calling into question representative black male engagement with American patriarchy.

Abstract:
This work describes an investigation of the factors governing the water quality in three upland streams at Loch Dee, S.W Scotland. Particular emphasis is placed on the factors affecting streamwater acidification in the short and medium time scales. The streams are differentiated from one another by the land-use employed in each of the stream catchments. The details of both the site and methods of data collection are described. Variations in both bulk precipitation and streamwater chemistry are examined at the weekly scale in order to determine the factors regulating streamwater chemistry. The 5 factors are; atmospheric deposition, weathering rates, biological production and consumption, ion-exchange and catchment hydrology. A more detailed examination of one of the processes (ion-exchange) is undertaken at both the catchment and laboratory scale. The data show that short-term streamwater acidification can be induced by ion-exchange of H+ for Na+ in the catchment soils following precipitation inputs heavily laden with sea-silts. The role of hydrology in determining streamwater acidity over storm periods is also considered using a time-series model. The model indicates that significant differences exist between the 3 catchments hydrology in terms of the duration and timing of acidic episodes in the streams.

Abstract:
The Dee Estuary, located on the southern side of Liverpool Bay, in the Eastern Irish Sea, is macrotidal with a peak spring tidal range in excess of 10m. The large tidal range and associated strong currents make the estuary a very dynamic system with large fluxes of sediment. River canalisation and land reclamation between 1700 and early 1900 has significantly altered the hydrodynamic and sedimentological conditions. This caused the main navigation channel to migrate from the eastern side to the western shore of the estuary. Large bed forms are visible in the intertidal zones of the mouth of the estuary in aerial photographs. These features can be seen to be migrating into the estuary from X-band radar images. Dune migration can lead to residual sand transport rates, depending of the direction and magnitude of the dune characteristics. It is therefore important to monitor the movement of these large scale bed forms to determine the stability of the complex area of sand banks and channels in the Dee Estuary. Understanding the patterns of dune migration and associated sediment transport is fundamental for effective sediment management of an estuary, as well as an important consideration for offshore construction. Monitoring the migration patterns of large scale bed forms in the mouth of the Dee Estuary will show if they correlate with the transport of sediment into the estuary and how much they contribute to the sediment budget of the estuary. The driving forces behind large scale bed form migration are investigated to determine whether it is the action of waves, tidal currents or a combination of the two which are important. ADCP deployments on West Kirby Sands show a strong flood dominant tide which could be indicative of a flood dominant residual sediment transport. A 'three pronged' approach is taken to understand the migration of large scale bed forms in the mouth of the Dee Estuary. This includes remote sensing with X-band radar data, field measurements using DGPS surveying and numerical modelling techniques. Modelling of the estuary using TELEMAC, validated with ADCP measurements at West Kirby Sands, shows flood dominant sediment transport over a tidal cycle. A 'model chaining' approach is taken to simulate tides, waves, wave generated currents and sediment transport. Developments are made to include a variable bed roughness feedback method into TELEMAC.

Abstract:
This thesis project was an experiment in thinking/making. Borrowing from the Renaissance Hermetic Tradition of power magic in the work of Dr. John Dee, it began in contemplative research mode in order to find sources for action. The project had its final goal, a theatrical performance (masque) to be delivered as an act of inter-subjective exchange extending beyond solipsism by means of thinking through actions and things. The interdisciplinary nature of the event spoke of architecture's ability to bring together various modes of abstract expression (literature, theatre, theory, music, etc.) without attempts at explicit meaning but by searching for implicitness in the juxtaposition of messages and mediums. In its historical survey from ancient Greek sacrificial rituals to present butchering practices, the thesis project presents as a crosscurrent a critique of power and its contemporary implications.

Abstract:
This thesis re-assesses what we know of John Dee within a context of what I have termed ‘polytemporality’. This approach questions Dee’s relationship to periodising conventions and to the historiographical recuperation of identity following perceived temporal ruptures (such as the Reformation). It challenges the standard notion of Dee as the archetypal ‘Renaissance conjurer’ by bringing to the forefront Dee’s own assessment of the ‘past, present and hereafter’ of his reputation. It argues that Dee’s multiple identities are instead reflective of a polytemporal reflexivity that is heightened by a conflict between his intellectual hubris and personal insecurity. Dee emerges as a figure poised uncomfortably in and outside of his society’s conceptions of temporality, influenced by the past and self-consciously aware of the future. The temporal fracturing prompted by the Reformation and the ensuing struggle to re-establish a British historiography of continuity and succession is reflected in the instability and impermanence of Dee’s own changing identities. Dee’s concern for his posthumous reputation juxtaposes the self-assuredness of his intellectual self-image, providing glimpses of the man behind the magus. In this thesis Dee is ‘revisited, repeated [...] reinterpreted, and reshuffled’ (Latour, We Have Never Been Modern, 75), and emerges as a man before, between, and behind his times: a polytemporal Dee.

Abstract:
This thesis describes the water chemistry of the River Dee and its tributaries, and the potential water chemistry changes that may occur under acid deposition and land use change scenarios. Historic water quality and flow records were collated and supplemented with new water chemistry data. These data were analysed in relation to catchment geography and river flow using both mathematical modelling and novel, GIS based techniques. This analysis established the importance of diffuse inputs and highlighted differences between upland and lowland regions in the catchment. In headwater streams, different geological types create hydrochemical source areas that strongly influence stream chemistry whilst in lowland tributaries, agricultural sources are particularly important. In the upland region most major ions were diluted as flows increased, further emphasizing the influence of deeper geological sources on baseflow chemistry, but showing soilwater controls on stormflow composition. The headwaters, which drain predominantly acid rocks, are presently oligotrophic but threatened by the impact of acid deposition and land use change (re-afforestation). In some of the lowland tributaries, increased NO3-N concentrations have resulted from more intensive land management. The potential impacts of acid deposition and land use change were simulated in both upland and lowland catchments by considering existing and new models within a Functional Unit Network. For upland regions this consisted of developing a new, two component hydrochemical mixing model to simulate the spatial and flow-related variations in streamwater acidity. The mixing model was based on End Member Mixing Analysis (EMMA), and site specific end members (alkalinity and Ca) could be predicted from emergent catchment characteristics (soil and land use) using linear regression.

Farley, David Allan. "Modelling the impact of acid deposition on the hydrochemistry of the Loch Dee catchments, S.W. Scotland." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/15208.

Full text
Abstract:
This work describes an investigation into the impact of acid deposition on the hydrochemistry of the three main tributary catchments at Loch Dee in Southwest Scotland. The research covers two main objectives. First, the hydrochemical processes that determine the observed streamwater chemistry are examined empirically through the determination of the hydrochemical budgets for each sub-catchment. Second, the ability of the Integrated Lake Watershed Acidification Study model (ILWAS) to simulate the observed hydrochemical processes is evaluated. From the hydrochemical budgets two major factors are identified as responsible for the spatial variability in the streamwater chemistry at Loch Dee. These factors are the underlying geology and land-use management techniques. The role of afforestation is difficult to judge due to the immaturity of the forest. However, the budgets indicate that any influence is a result of the pre-afforestation ploughing and drainage rather than the presence of the trees. On a temporal basis the hydrochemical budgets show considerable variability on both a monthly and an annual timescale, with the variability in the streamwater outputs of bases and nutrients primarily related to the variability in precipitation quantity. The budgets also indicate that, particularly on an annual timescale, the dry deposition of sulphate and hence of acidity to the catchment varies considerably. Furthermore, on a monthly timescale, the temporal variation in the budgets indicates that the conservative ion chloride can be physically stored within the catchments. This finding has severe implications for the estimation of dry deposition inputs and for the utilisation of simple hydrochemical models. The ILWAS model is generally able to simulate the hydrological response of both catchments. However, the chemical simulations of both catchments are considerably smoothed and bear little resemblance to the observed data. This failure is ascribed to the large number of input variables for which site-specific data are not available, together with the use of monthly averaged precipitation quality to drive the model. Sensitivity analysis of the model indicates that the most critical input variables are the soil depth and soil solution chemistry, and that the majority of the input variables can be considered as calibration parameters. Given the subsequent large number of calibration parameters it is suggested that a unique calibration of the model will rarely be possible. Consequently, it is concluded that the primary use of the ILWAS model will be as an explanatory tool for examining conceptual ideas about the hydrochemical processes that determine acidification. The model's value as a management tool to help mitigate the effects of anthropogenically derived changes in surface water chemistry will be extremely limited.

Abstract:
The work of John Dee (1527-1608) posits an approach to architecture based upon the concept of wonder. Sympathetic correspondences permeate Dee's disparate practical activities and architectural discourse. His contributions to astronomy, alchemy, cartography and navigation are grounded in the intersubjective cosmology of the Renaissance. It is in Dee's Mathematicall Praeface (1570), which promotes mathematics as a natural philosophy, that the architect's metier is aligned with the marvellous and established as an art encompassing numerous disciplines. Dee's syncretic formulation of architecture is distinctly attuned to the alchemical and magical discourses pervading the Renaissance and established in relation to his hieroglyphic "Monas" symbol. This emblematic device, discussed in the Monas Hieroglyphica (1564), exemplifies the link between architecture and writing. The Monas symbol permits the architect-as-alchemist to contemplate marvels and effect them in practice. In addition to positioning wonder in human activity, as a navigational beacon guiding the work of the architect, Dee signals the possibility of restoring conjuring-the dangerous and denigrated art of sixteenth century England--into architectural practice.

Huckle, Jonathan Mark. "Colonisation and development of salt marsh in the Dee estuary, NW England : integrating large-scale pattern and small-scale ecological process." Thesis, University of Chester, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10034/76154.

Full text
Abstract:
The Dee estuary, one of the most important British estuaries in terms of size and conservation value, has been subject to extensive colonisation and development of intertidal mudflats by salt marsh vegetation. In the last century, acceleration of this process has been attributed to the ability of Spartina anglica C.E. Hubbard to colonise bare sediment. The research in this thesis aims to investigate the ecological patterns and processes involved in the development of salt marsh vegetation. These have been examined using a large-scale approach involving remote sensing techniques and a small-scale approach to examine ecological processes at the level of the individual plant and species. Large-scale temporal patterns in the distribution were investigated by analysing a sequence of monochrome aerial photographs dating from 1955 to 1997. At the marsh apex, initial rapid colonisation was followed by a decreased rate of expansion and a reduction in the pioneer zone. This suggested a steepening of the marsh elevation gradient, which is interpreted as the marsh approaching its natural limit of expansion. The rate of salt marsh expansion was consistent across the time sequence for the second target area, a cross-section of the marsh gradient, but with S. a«g/zca-dominated colonisation of mudflats changing to colonisation by a pioneer community co-dominated by S. anglica and Salicornia europaea. Large-scale spatial distribution patterns were further investigated using multispectral remote sensing data from 1997. Radiometric data were used to define the spectral characteristics of the major types of salt marsh vegetation. Airborne Thematic Mapper data were used to classify the reflectance data from the whole marsh to determine the spatial distribution of plant communities based on their spectral characteristics. Mapping of these communities provided a baseline that will be a useful tool for future management of the salt marsh. An experimental approach was used to examine the role of abiotic and biotic factors on the growth and interactions between S. anglica and Puccinellia maritima (Huds.) Parl. In two series of competition experiments, P. maritima exerted a one¬way effect over S. anglica. The intensity of this interaction was increased in environmental conditions favourable to P. maritima, and was greater in terms of above-ground than below-ground biomass. In both experiments, S. anglica exhibited a disproportionate reduction in below-ground competitive interaction in abiotic conditions less favourable to P. maritima. A corresponding increase in rhizomes suggested that this is a potential mechanism by which S. anglica may evade competitive neighbours at low marsh elevations. An appreciation of the importance of scale has led to a multi-scaled and holistic view of the ecological process of salt marsh colonisation and development. Integration of both large and small-scale approaches has provided valuable information on the ecological patterns and processes, and has important implications for current and future management of salt marsh in the Dee estuary.

Abstract:
The impact of land use on the N and P status of three contrasting river catchments within the north east of Scotland was studied over time and along the length of each river. Annual mean NO3-N concentrations increased significantly in the Ythan, Don (P<0.001) and Dee (P<0.05), from 1958 to 1992. Concentrations in the predominantly agricultural Ythan catchment showed the largest increase from 1.9 mg l-1 in 1958 to 7.0 mg l-1 in 1992. A significant increase in mean NO3-N concentrations in the spring from 1980 to 1992 in the Ythan appeared to reflect the increased N fertiliser usage associated with a change from winter to spring cropping which was evident over this period. Annual mean NO3-N loads over the period 1980-1992 were 1305, 2010 and 623 t yr-1 for the Ythan, Don and Dee, respectively. Annual PO4-P loads were 17.6, 40-1 and 16.8 t yr-1 over the same time period for the Ythan, Don and Dee respectively. These loads were found to have associated errors in the range 16-24, 16-17 and 18-32% for NO3-N, PO4-P and total P respectively. Annual loss coefficients, calculated for NO3-N, PO4-P total P, Si and suspended sediment were 27.2, 0.180, 0.319, 26.1 and 73.5 kg ha-1, respectively. Annual losses of N and P from forestry were calculated in the Kirkhill catchment, a small subcatchment of the Don and ranged from 0.6 to 2.5 kg ha-1 depending on flow. Annual total P losses were also related to flow and ranged from 0.029 to 0.06 kg ha-1. A nutrient budget calculated for the Kirkhill catchment found the annual loss of N from the catchment accounted for 44.5% of N inputs, in contrast, only 2.7% of P input to the catchment was detected in the output.

Abstract:
The broad objective of the study is to investigate the impact of Land and Agrarian reforms on poverty alleviation in Joubertina. Purposive sampling method (non-probability sampling) was carried out mainly on two groups of people, land reform beneficiary in Jay Dee Rovon and non-beneficiary in Mon Desire. Moreover, the stratified random sampling method was also applied in Jay Dee Rovon to choose a sample of 60 households from 129 land reform beneficiaries in Jay Dee Rovon and simple random sample of 60 applied to Mon Desire household subsistence. Binary Logistic Regression model was used to test factors that influenced beneficiary on level of production. Results indicated that age and farming experience were significant variables. Age had a negative coefficient value, meaning an increase in age was less likely to cause beneficiary to produce at commercial level. Descriptive statistics revealed that farming activities in the study areas seems to be performed mostly by relatively medium age people followed by younger people and lastly by the older people. Moreover, farming experience with positive coefficient revealed that it is highly likely to influence the beneficiary to produce at commercial for marketing. The older the farmer the more the experience s/he had in farming activities. However, descriptive revealed, medium and young age people with little knowledge tend to be more active than older people on farming activities but on the other hand they are more capable of carrying out physical activities. The results revealed that land reform beneficiaries likely to influence the level of production for marketing while non-beneficiaries produce for home consumption and little for sale in local market. An improvement on yield results an increase on income and thus leading to a change in ownership of household’s durable assets. An increase in yield also indirectly results employment recreation, increasing real wage and improve farm income thus leading to poverty reduction in JDR as compare to MD. The study recommends that the government should also assist non-beneficiaries in MD with agricultural infrastructure to improve their level of production and food security at household level.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The work here presented is focused around the design, characterization and ultimately first demonstration of a deep ultraviolet, frequency tripled semiconductor disk laser (SDL). The construction of such a laser is described, together with a review of the relevant theory and investigation of the underlying processes in order to improve the system. SDLs based on gallium indium phosphide have attracted intense investigation over the last ten years for their fundamental emission in the 660nm-690nm (visible red emission), a region previously only available to SDLs by means of nonlinear frequency conversion. Such frequency conversion applied to red SDLs provides access to the highly energetic ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectum but, although its conversion to the near ultraviolet has been rather successful, further extension into the deep UV presents a new set of challenges that must be addressed in order to achieve efficient laser emission. 78 μW of deep ultraviolet emission at 225nm have been achieved in continuous-wave operation. The output wavelength is tunable for 350 cm-1. This is the shortest wavelength emitted from an SDL to date and is the first implementation of intracavity frequency tripling in a visible SDL.

Abstract:
In their novels, Ernest Buckler, Alice Munro, Peter Ackroyd, Adele Wiseman and A. S. Byatt have each explored moments when their characters experience expanded states of consciousness. Narratives such as these, as well as those of various mystical literatures, posit the idea that the barriers of the known self can be broken through, often repeatedly. Each of the novels to be studied here portrays a gap- or flaw-ridden self in the act of perpetuating and/or penetrating various forms of narrative and identity constructs. Each also features an encounter with what is other when these narrative and identity boundaries are breached. Reading about "mystical" occurrences of this nature challenges readers with the possibility that perceptions may be registered beyond the paradigms of the subject/object split. In this project, narrative fiction will be read in terms of its capacity to trigger a questioning of, and an expansion from within, systems of knowledge and identity, explicitly in terms of character and plot structure, and implicitly as a model for the reading self. The ability to observe and to respond to productive "gaps" or "flaws" in the stories of the self is a skill not only practiced by contemplatives and mystics, and by the characters in these novels, but by readers of imaginative fiction as well.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Passive galaxies have different morphologies and structural properties than star-forming galaxies of similar mass. The evidence of a bimodal distribution of galaxy properties suggests a link between the quenching process and and galaxy structure. Understanding the origin of this correlation requires establishing constraints on the mechanisms as well as on the timing of bulge formation. How are bulges formed?Do bulges grow in the main sequence? Are galaxies re-accreting a star forming disk? Do galaxies start to quench from the inside? etc.Proper answers to these questions require resolving the internal components of galaxies at different epochs. Thanks to the CANDELS high-resolution multi-wavelength data, I performed 2-D bulge-disk decompositions of the surface brightness profile of $simeq 17'300$ galaxies (F160W < 23, 0 < z < 2) in 4-7 filters, covering a spectral distribution of 430-1600 nm. A novel approach, based on deep-learning, allowed us to make an a-priori selection of the best profile. Stellar parameters are computed trough the SED fitting. The final catalog contains structural/morphological informations together with the stellar population properties for a large sample of bulges and disks within galaxies. This is the largest and more complete catalog of bulge-disc decompositions at $z>0$.The catalog is then used to investigate how galaxies quench and transform their morphologies. The size of disks and massive bulge is independent of the bulge-to-total ratio ($M_{*}>10^{10} M_{odot}$). It suggests a unique formation process for massive bulges and also that disk survival/regrowth is a common phenomenon after bulge formation. However pure bulges (B/T>0.8), are ~30% larger than bulges embedded in disks at fixed stellar mass and have larger Sersic indices. This is compatible with a later growth of these systems through minor mergers.Bulges in star-forming galaxies are found to be 30% larger than bulges in quenched systems, at fixed stellar mass. Regarding the disks the systematic difference is only a factor of $sim 0.1$. This can be interpreted as a signature that galaxies experience an additional morphological transformation during or after quenching. However, this result is not free of progenitor bias. Moreover, the vast majority (if not all) of pure disks (B/T<0.2) in our sample lie in the main-sequence. It suggests that quenching without any bulge growth is not a common channel at least in the general field environment probed by our data. Pure "blue" bulges (B/T>0.8) do exist however, suggesting that the formation of bulges happens while galaxies are still star forming. Finally, in order to put constraints on the formation times of bulges and disks I analyzed the UVJ colors rest frame. Almost all galaxies in our sample present negative color gradients. Bulges are always redder than the disks at all redshifts. This is compatible with a scenario of inside-out quenching put forward by previous works. However rejuvenation through disk accretion could lead to similar signatures

Abstract:
While expansion outside the domestic market is considered an important growth opportunity for SMEs, it remains a complex and expensive process, riddled with uncertainties that can constitute a real threat to the companies’ stability and longevity. As such, this thesis aims to understand how managers of SMEs control the development of their organizations in the international scene, as well as the systems they employ for this purpose. The methodology used is a mix between a quantitative analysis of 110 international SMEs and a qualitative study of 11 specific cases. This combination has allowed for a study of both the nature and role that management control systems play in the international development of SMEs.This thesis has found that managers of SMEs control their organizations’ development by combining actions, results, and clan control mechanisms. The management control systems therefore rely on a “control mix” of mechanisms of different natures ranging from more or less sophisticated, depending on the degree of dispersion of the SME’s international activities. This thesis also observes that management control systems are employed not only to monitor international development, but also for other roles, including to control internationalization strategies, set the limits, communicate managers’ beliefs, legitimize decisions regarding internationalization, as well as stimulate organizational learning regarding internationalization. From this, it appears that management control systems allow managers to combine exploration and exploitation strategies in foreign markets.Consequently, this thesis proposes a model in which management control systems serve as levers of international ambidexterity. This model allows for new perspectives on the debate surrounding the internationalization process and management control systems

Abstract:
This paper carries out a critical discourse analysis (CDA) of the article "¿Chinofobia?” published by the Spanish newspaper El País. It applies the theory of racist discourse in the media as formulated by Teun A. van Dijk. Its hypothesis is that the article, which supposedly analyses discrimination against the Chinese minority in Spain, covertly blames the Chinese minority itself for the discrimination. Applying CDA methodology as exemplified in previous studies by van Dijk, the paper analyses the article on global and local levels, and delineates its mental model. The global level analysis describes the article in terms of macropropositions and proposes a macrostructure: the self-alienation of the Chinese minority. The paper then analyses how the macrostructure is reinforced on the local level through micropropositions by examining 1) how vocabulary serves the negative presentation and othering of the Chinese minority, 2) how strategies of mitigation minimise discrimination by employing imprecise and vague language, 3) how quotes are used to give coherence and force to the macrostructure, 4) how implications associate the Chinese minority with criminality, and 5) how stereotyped beliefs about the Chinese minority are presented as common sense (presuppositions) and fallaciously argued. Finally, the paper delineates the mental model: the presuppositions about integration, and the implicit warning that minorities should integrate or they will be discriminated against.
