As a follow-up to the author’s 2018 analysis of New York City English in film, this article turns its attention to the whole country over the same 80-year period of 1930–2010, using acoustic phonetic, quantitative, and statistical analysis to identify the most important changes in the pronunciation of North American English by 40 European American leading actresses in their best-known films. Focusing mostly on vowel production, the analysis reveals a gradual shift from East Coast patterns rooted in the speech of New York City to West Coast patterns rooted in the speech of Los Angeles. Full text
Abstract:
AbstractSpeech recognition can be formulated as the problem of guessing a sequence of words that produces a sequence of sounds. The human brain is remarkably good at solving this problem, even though the same words correspond to many different sounds, because of accents or characteristics of the voice. Moreover, the environment is always noisy, to that the listeners hear a corrupted version of the speech.Computers are getting much better at speech recognition and voice command systems are now common for smartphones (Siri), automobiles (GPS, music, and climate control), call centers, and dictation systems. In this chapter, we explain the main ideas behind the algorithms for speech recognition and for related applications. The starting point is a model of the random sequence (e.g., words) to be recognized and of how this sequence is related to the observation (e.g., voice). The main model is called a hidden Markov chain. The idea is that the successive parts of speech form a Markov chain and that each word maps randomly to some sounds. The same model is used to decode strings of symbols in communication systems.Section 11.1 is a general discussion of learning. The hidden Markov chain model used in speech recognition and in error decoding is introduced in Sect. 11.2. That section explains the Viterbi algorithm. Section 11.3 discusses expectation maximization and clustering algorithms. Section 11.4 covers learning for hidden Markov chains.

Abstract:
Ennodius, the sixth-century bishop of Pavia, left twenty-eight so-called dictiones, ten of them classifiable as controversiae, that is, legal speeches on fictional themes. Dictio 21 is the only fully worked out exercise, with theme, a personal Preface where Ennodius says he is ‘speaking against Quintilian’, and the declamation proper. This paper, from a collection of studies on declamation published in 2003, provides a translation of the piece, equipped with a short commentary on the Latin text and Ennodius’ language. The dictio has been taken to be a reply to an extant work, the fifth of the Major Declamations wrongly attributed to Quintilian; but there are difficulties in this view, discussed at the end of the chapter, together with remarks on Ennodius’ technique and merits.

Electroencephalography (EEG) tracks voltage fluctuations resulting from ionic current flows within the neurons of the brain by recording electrical activity along the scalp to reveal what regions of the brain are involved in different mental processes. This chapter demonstrates how DICTION can be used to measure the fluctuations in the rhetoric in drafts of presidential speeches as they move through the White House speech drafting and review process. This chapter incorporates rhetorical analysis of 494 drafts of 67 presidential speeches gathered from the archives of administrations from Franklin Roosevelt to George H.W. Bush. Like the EEG, looking at the fluctuations in rhetorical scores may not reveal exactly what the thoughts are in the process, but it can reveal how a speech’s language changes over the course of the speechwriting process and help us unravel the mysteries of the inner-workings of this vital institution.

Abstract:
This chapter details the success of Ernst Kantorowicz's biography of emperor Frederick II, Kaiser Friedrich der Zweite, which was published at the end of March 1927 with an initial run of 2,600 copies. Several qualities mentioned in the reviews account for the book's attractiveness for large numbers of readers. Not least was its “brilliant” style. Kantorowicz was a forceful writer, taken to employing high-flown rhetoric, alliteration, and sometimes archaic diction for dramatic effect. The book featured memorable portraits, brightly colored scenes, literary allusions. References to classical Latin literature and mythology also served for flavor. Half a century after its publication the work was excerpted in a French literary magazine for its literary qualities.

Abstract:
This chapter particularly focuses on the duality of Heaney’s chorus, who are nominally the ancient sailors of the original, but use a diction and metaphoric landscape that places the play firmly in Heaney’s Ireland. We look not only at the literary and political implications of this, but specifically at the challenge it gives actors and directors working on the text. This chapter examines how the dual locus of The Cure at Troy works dramaturgically and visually, as an act of translation across time, space, and cultures, and the political questions the play raises by fusing chorus and God at the end of the play. As part of this exploration, the chapter charts Heaney’s journey to find a workable English verse line and metre for translating ancient drama, exploring his correspondence with Ted Hughes on the question. Furthermore, we look at the afterlife of The Cure at Troy, particularly revisions that Heaney has made when excerpts have been published in other contexts.

Abstract:
Geomechanical properties are essential for safe drilling, successful completion, and exploration of both conven-tional and unconventional reservoirs, e.g. deep shale gas and shale oil. Typically, these properties could be calcu-lated from sonic logs. However, in shale reservoirs, it is time-consuming and challenging to obtain reliable log-ging data due to borehole complexity and lacking of in-formation, which often results in log deficiency and high recovery cost of incomplete datasets. In this work, we propose the bidirectional long short-term memory (BiL-STM) which is a supervised neural net
