Abstract:
Encyclopedic literature and dictionaries devoted to geological sciences were overviewed in the article. The authors emphasize the lack of basic Ukrainian geological encyclopedia and provide arguments for the necessity of its appearance. They substantiate the importance of dictionaries representing specific subject lexicon, in particular geological terminology: "Dictionary of Geological Terminology" (1923), "Russian-Ukrainian Geological Dictionary" (1959), "Russian-Ukrainian Dictionary of Geological Terms" (1993), "Russian-Ukrainian Geological dictionary" (2011), "Ukrainian-French-English Dictionary of Geology, Geophysics, Well Drilling, and Oil, & Gas industry" (2011), "Russian-Ukrainian Geological Dictionary" (2016), "Geological Dictionary: Open Educational and Scientific Web Resource" (2017), "Russian-Ukrainian Geological Dictionary" (2018), "Ukrainian-Russian-English Dictionary of Geological Terms" (2020), and other mineralogical, geodetic, mining, petrographic dictionaries. The results show that Ukrainian encyclopedic and lexicographic literature does not provide knowledge of all geological sciences despite a fairly large number of encyclopedias and dictionaries (in total, over 40 sources were found), as there are dictionaries and encyclopedias encompassing only some particular geological fields. The authors also reflect on the issue of the distribution of subject encyclopedias and dictionaries in educational sphere today, when Wikipedia is considered to be the most popular online reference work in the world. The authors conclude that it is necessary to build a modern geological encyclopedia as a unified Ukrainian language source of reliable reference knowledge on geology.

Abstract:
Thanks in part to the influence of Friedrich Brockhaus’s Konversations-Lexikon, a German encyclopedia inaugurated in 1796, biographies of the living had become unremarkable in Europe’s encyclopedias by the early nineteenth century. Today, they are pervasive. Between 1674 and 1750, they remained rare and controversial in the alphabetical ancestors of the modern encyclopedia. In this article, I explain why, and show how encyclopedists’ practices evolved in the period in which the historical dictionary and other alphabetical proto-encyclopedias burst onto the European literary scene, that is, the late seventeenth century and the first half of the eighteenth. I begin by exploring early encyclopedists’ motives for not treating the living. My second section then examines the most influential historical dictionaries as well as the encyclopedia that best covered the living, tracking how practices regarding contemporary biographies evolved. Finally, I consider some of the broader social and cultural changes, both internal and external to the history of encyclopedia-making, that are reflected in encyclopedias’ growing coverage of the living and the recently deceased.

Abstract:
There are some studies that analyze definitions of the term “suicide” in academic works, as well as in generalist dictionaries and encyclopedias in several languages, but there still seems to be no investigation focused on specialized dictionaries and encyclopedias (SDEs) on this topic. Hence the general objective of this study was to describe the suicide SDEs available in the literature. To accomplish this purpose, a basic, quantitative, qualitative, descriptive, bibliographical and documental method was used. The 12 criteria proposed by John Humbley in 2018 for the analysis of SDEs were determined as the main theoretical foundation. From 2017 to 2022, through an integrative review in 6 languages and 4 databases, 8 SDEs were excluded. The 4 included ones were 2 dictionaries and 2 encyclopedias published between 2003 and 2016, 3 in English and 1 in Spanish. One of the most relevant findings was the fact that the SDEs examined try to address the various aspects of this object, instead of adopting a reductionist perspective. However, as only 4 books were analyzed, it was not possible to identify a clear pattern about all 12 criteria and all 4 sources. For example, it is not known which terms would be more feasible to include in a work of this nature nor the optimal way to predicate them. Even so, this paper is a relevant contribution to the studies on language and suicide, providing elements for the evolution of dictionaries and encyclopedias specialized on this binomial.

Abstract:
Statement of the problem. Teaching foreign languages at school and university is a complex and multifaceted process. Undoubtedly, the organization of the educational process is impossible without the use of textbooks, workbooks and books for reading. Dictionaries and encyclopedias become an additional means of learning a foreign language. The focus of this study is the problem of using special encyclopedias in the process of studying a foreign language at the university, particularly, English encyclopedias while learning English at the university. The relevance of the study is due to the high interest in foreign languages and the need to know them on a sufficient level to achieve some goals. Results. Modern encyclopedias in foreign languages, presented both in printed and online formats, allow users to obtain the necessary information on the topic under study, as well as to get acquainted with new terms of the subject area being studied. The analysis of "World History Encyclopedia" is presented in the article. The data of this encyclopedia can be used by students of historical specialties studying history as the main discipline, and a foreign language as an additional subject. Conclusion. The conducted research allows us to conclude that the introduction of encyclopedia materials into the educational process makes it interesting and interactive, provokes students’ interest and contributes to a better memorization of information. Such encyclopedias are learner’s ones that is manifested in exercises to check the assimilation of the studied material. Moreover, the learner’s orientation can be seen on the example of sound files included into the encyclopedic articles that allows to listen to the data in the language being studied. The information in such encyclopedias is usually given in a user-friendly language. The introduction of graphic illustrations contributes to a more effective perception of the material.

Abstract:
The research objective was to assess the information potential of reference publications on the history of entrepreneurship in the pre-revolutionary Siberia. Pre-revolutionary, Soviet, and post-Soviet scientists published various encyclopedias and reference books on the history of trade, merchants, and entrepreneurship in Siberia in the second half of the XIX – early XX centuries. The reference literature of each period has its own characteristic features. For instance, The Brief Encyclopedia of the History of Merchants and Commerce of Siberia and The Encyclopedic Dictionary of the History of Merchants and Commerce of Siberia are very unusual. The dictionary with its encyclopedic form of presentation is currently the most convenient and popular variant. Directories and encyclopedias reflect the era they belonged to and thus can provide valuable information on the time period. The dictionaries under analysis appeared to contain biographies of people engaged in entrepreneurial activity, definitions of entrepreneurial activities, descriptions of rural settlements, cities, fairs, etc. The study of reference publications significantly expands the existing ideas about the nature of the business development, trade, and economy of Siberia. However, the related historiography still needs further studies.

The paper is devoted to cultural heritage dictionaries with special reference to the oldest branch of English lexicography – author lexicography, comprising three hundred reference books of different types: concordances, glossaries, lexicons, indices, thesauri, etc. The article describes the main trends in developing author linguistic dictionaries for general and special purposes to single and complete works of G. Chaucer, W. Shakespeare, J. Milton, other famous English writers since the 16th c. up to the present days. The architecture of author encyclopedic dictionaries (guides, encyclopedias, companions) and onomasticons (dictionaries of characters and place names, who is who in … series) and their significant contribution to the English language, culture and society are discussed. The main accent is made on the digital era of English heritage lexicography, innovative features of modern printed and Internet author reference resources, aimed at certain target groups users’ needs and demands.

Mphahlele, Motlokwe Clifford. "A model to achieve communicative equivalence in translation dictionaries." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/52088.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2001.<br>Full text to be digitised and attached to bibliographic record.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Bilingual dictionaries often do not satisfy the requirements of the dictionary users because they contain a relatively small percentage of articles displaying absolute equivalence between the source and the target language. This impedes the users from retrieving the required information. Communicative equivalence is a relation holding between source and target language entries in translation dictionaries. A translation equivalent should not be seen as a statement about the meaning of the lemma, but it should be regarded as an item that represents the target language and can be used to translate a specific occurrence of the source language item. If semantic and communicative equivalence do not hold between the source and the target language dictionary users will not be able to use the target language successfully. Instead of achieving communicative equivalence, the dictionary user is confused and ends up using language in an unacceptable way. Relying on translation dictionaries to improve their language skills and to learn more about the target language, dictionary users often come across haphazardly arranged articles in dictionaries that do not lead to communicative equivalence. In this case, the dictionary users are confused and end up using language in an unacceptable way. This thesis explores and investigates different ways to achieve communicative equivalence in translation dictionaries. The research formulates some of the needed guidelines for the lexicographers of translation dictionaries. It intends to assist lexicographers to compile useroriented translation dictionaries that can foster multilingualism amongst the dictionary users. As a result of this research, lexicographers will be able to compile translation dictionaries that will assist dictionary users to achieve communicative success. These dictionaries will establish semantic and communicative resemblance between the source and the target language forms. As a lexicographic problem, communicative equivalence is being addressed in the thesis and the researcher aims to make lexicographers aware of the mistakes in translation dictionaries. The objective of the thesis is to help lexicographers with the compilation of dictionaries where the users can achieve an optimal retrieval of information. The research focuses on metalexicographic issues in order to enhance the quality of practical lexicography. By doing so both the practical and theoretical lexicography can benefit from this research.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Tweetalige woordeboeke voldoen dikwels nie aan die behoeftes van hulle gebruikers nie omdat hulle Onbeperkte aantal artikels bevat met absolute ekwivalensie tussen bron- en doeltaal. Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil (Afrikaans and Dutch))—University of Stellenbosch, 2006.<br>In my research I will comment on the development of the national lexicography units in South Africa, following the establishment of the eleven official languages in South Africa in the post-apartheid society. I will also outline the weaknesses that exist in the traditional dictionaries to ensure limited mistakes in the lexicographic sector. I strongly believe that bilingual dictionaries in a multilingual society like South Africa, especially printed dictionaries, will play a great role in the African society as there is a shortage of reference sources, to assist translators in the development of our languages. The research will also advocate society to fight the major challenges faced by the national lexicography units in South Africa and other countries. I hope that with the research people will become aware of the necessity of using a dictionary at all times and that dictionaries are not only used for professional purposes by academics and highly qualified people, but can also be used for pleasure.

Abstract:
Thesis (DLitt (Afrikaans and Dutch))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006.<br>This study reports on a metalexicographical investigation into contextual guidance in Afrikaans translation dictionaries. The problem that gives rise to the need for such an investigation is demonstrated from a practical perspective, after which attention is paid to determining the genuine purpose of a dictionary by looking at the component parts of the concept, i.e. the typological placement and the target user group of the dictionary in question. The discussion of the target user group evolves into an in-depth look at the user aspect, which results in the development and presentation of the model of lexicographical parameters for user-friendly dictionaries. This model aims to provide a scientific description of lexicographical user friendliness. Existing proposed definitions of the genuine purpose of a dictionary coupled with the benefit of insights derived from the model of lexicographical parameters for user-friendly dictionaries make the presentation of a new definition of the genuine purpose of a (translation) dictionary possible, which is followed by defining a polyfunctional translation dictionary for Southern Africa. Attention is also paid to some macrostructural issues pertaining to standard translation dictionaries, among others vertical and horizontal alphabetical macrostructures and niching and nesting as manifestations of horizontal alphabetical macrostructures. With regard to nesting, the classification of first and second level nesting is expanded by the description of third and fourth level nesting. The influence of the organisation plan and the dictionary conceptualisation plan on the selection of lexical items for the macrostructure of a standard dictionary is touched upon. An in-depth evaluation of contextual guidance in Afrikaans standard translation dictionaries follows the exposition of the rationale for it and the definitions of the terms context, contextualisation and contextual guidance. The discussion produces the identification of the types of contextualising entries, among others meaning explanations, lexicographical labels and glosses, which fall under the main class of discriminators and which in turn functions alongside the main classes of cotext entries and inserted texts. Each type and subtype is studied meticulously, and distribution structures are determined and evaluated through the study of dictionary data. The study of the data also results in the identification of different levels of contextualisation as well as different types of translation equivalent paradigms. The discussion of lexicographical labels takes on the form of a critical overview of the existing literature on this topic and results in the presentation of a new and scientifically sounder model for the description of labelling in dictionaries in general, i.e. the deixis model. The study of contextualising entries is followed by a discussion of certain elements of the composition of dictionary articles that can support successful contextual guidance, i.e. types of microstructures and the rapid internal access structure. The in-depth study of contextualisation makes the revision of the definition for the term contextualising entry possible. Ultimately a practical model for more effective contextual guidance in polyfunctional Afrikaans translation dictionaries is presented in three main components, i.e. (i) standards for the application of contextual entries, (ii) the proposal of an adapted rapid internal access structure, and (iii) the effective application of functional types of microstructures. The requirements of lexicographical accountability and user-friendliness remain central motives throughout the study.

Abstract:
The rare book section appeared in the library named after M.V. Lomonosov 8 years ago. This fund is small - only a couple of hundred books. However, its value is measured not by size, but by uniqueness. The basis of the fund is made up of editions of the XIX–XX centuries. In terms of its content, the fund is universal. Most of it is fiction. In addition, there is popular science literature of past centuries, dictionaries, encyclopedias, newspapers. The collection of rare books includes: the collection “Poems and Prose Articles” by Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov, published in 1886 and donated in 1984 by the poet Ion Odobescu; A. Glazunov, 1895 edition; I. Turgenev –1898; M. Gorky – 1901; Emilian Bukov – 1938; V. Zhukovsky – 1902; N. Leskov – 1903; P. Tchaikovsky – 1908; I. Brahms – 1873; M. Yu. Lermonotov – 1940; H. Wells – 1909 “Otechestvennye zapiski” – 1840; “Bulletin of Europe” – 1879; “Course of Geography of NonEuropean Countries” – 1905; “Niva” – 1899; K. Marx’s “Capital” – published in 1950 and much more. Our books are not museum pieces. They form part of the actively used collection of the library. Any interested reader can get acquainted with the collection of rare books on the website of the library M. V. Lomonosov in the “Rare Books” section.

Abstract:
One of the important issue is that culture consist of a series and standards that acted upon by a group community who behave in the way that lies within arrange of specific issues (The source language) and logically for that is translated of the object language unless the translator has acultural and social back ground in the both languages. So that he can reformulate the text in manner compatible with the bilingualism into which the translation intended. Therefore, the aim of this research was to reveal the relationship between culture and translation and its importance in translating the Islamic cultural term Arabic into Hebrew. Research problem: Recent studies, along with the experinces of other researchers in the field of translation ,revealed that the translator possesses in not sufficient in many. times to understand the texts he is translating and Sometimes he may work to over come those difficulties. that he presents with the help of special sources for that , but at the time of translating some Islamic cultural terms, the return to those soures is not sufficient for the purpose , this is because there are no synonyms in the target language, and it remains difficult to translate, no matter how much the translator tries to search in dictionaries and encyclopedias. sti bue irottak cat bao sort fo Research importance: The importance of this research lies in revealing the benefit of the culture awareness of the translator through the reconstruction of the text from Arabic into Hebrew (The Islamic cultural term as model). Research aim: The aim of this research is to highlight the necessity of having an adequate mastery of the language into which the person is translating. Ataeva, Olga Muratovna, Vladimir Alekseevich Serebryakov, and Natalia Pavlovna Tuchkova. "Ontological description for some boundary value problems of elasticity theory." In 25th Scientific Conference “Scientific Services & Internet – 2023”. Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.20948/abrau-2023-24.

Full text
Abstract:
The paper uses the ontological design approach to describe the semantics of some boundary value problems from the field of solid mechanics. Modern materials modeled within the framework of the theory of elasticity require new formulations of classical problems of mathematical physics. To describe new problems, it is necessary to establish connections between new terms and concepts with the classical definitions of the mathematical encyclopedia and other primary sources. Establishing links allows you to form a dictionary and thesaurus of the applied subject area of new boundary value problems and place the results in the semantic environment of the digital library. Examples of this approach are demonstrated using the capabilities of the LibMeta semantic library, which contains a digitized version of the mathematical encyclopedia and encyclopedia of mathematical physics, classifiers, and applied mathematical thesauri and dictionaries. The purpose of the research is to provide the user with additional services in the search for publications in the applied scientific field.

Kalenov, Nikolay Evgenevich, and Alexander Nikolaevich Sotnikov. "On the structure of the Common Digital Space of Scientific knowledge ontology." In 24th Scientific Conference “Scientific Services & Internet – 2022”. Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.20948/abrau-2022-23.

Abstract:
The work is a development of the research conducted by the authors in the field of creating a Common Digital Space of Scientific Knowledge (CDSSK). The CDSSK is a digital information structure aggregating heterogeneous polythematic information related to scientific knowledge and including a set of subspaces related to various thematic scientific areas. The sources of the CDSSK content are existing information systems, such as the Great Russian Encyclopedia, the Unified Catalog of Geographical Names, the National Electronic Library, etc. A distinctive features of the CDSSK are (a) data support in a structure that complies with the rules of the semantic WEB, and (b) the ability to process a wide range of polythematic queries and provide the ability to navigate through heterogeneous resources using semantic links between them. The real design of the CDSSK should begin with the formation of the ontology of space as a whole and its individual subspaces. In this paper, a hierarchical structuring of the CDSSK ontology is proposed. Such elements as "subspace", "class of objects", "object", "attributes of an object", three types of relations of objects and attributes (universal, quasi-universal and specific) are distinguished and defined. the concepts "reference books" and "dictionaries" of the CDSSK are introduced. Reference books contain information about attributes and their relationships and are used in the processes of content formation and implementation of search and navigation logic; dictionaries contain specific values of attributes and relationships. The formalization of these elements representations is proposed, which makes it quite simple to add, as necessary, new attributes and relationships between objects.
