Full textThis study is concentrated primarily on a systematic reflection on an empirical object : the arabic-french bilingual dictionary as a linguistic and didactic tool. It is based on direct observation and description of several dictionaries. The indexing, linguistic and semiotic characteristics, typology, nomenclature, entries and articles of the dictionaries are analyzed along with the needs of users. Lexicographical proposals toward a new dictionary are made at the end of this study

Full textOur thesis aims at analysing the prefaces of bilingual dictionaries italian-french french-italian (XVI-XXI century). In our corpus we selected the mains bilingual I/F F/I dictionaries in the international market in order to have at our disposal the prefaces written by the most important authors in the franch-italian lexicography. Our purpose is to underline the recurrent topics mentioned by the lexicographers in their introduction texts as well as the differences concerning the monolinguals and bilingual prefaces. We will adopt a diachronic and transversal perspective of analysis, in order to identify and examine the different types of prefaces of the I/F F/I dictionaries. We will provide a general description of bilingual dictionaries I/F F/I prefaces, describing their origins as well as their evolution in order to increase the knowledge of a not enough explored field in the bilingual lexicography research

Full textThe bilingual dictionary is a requisite tool for language and culture learning. From the perspective of lexicology, bilingual lexicography, contrastive linguistics and didactics of FLE, the present research is mainly focused on the role that French-Chinese dictionaries play in language learning. To get a better understanding of problems relating to vocabulary teaching and learning as well as to the traditional bilingual dictionaries used by Chinese students, the author has made enquiries from a number of Chinese students and teachers. Statistics show that one of the biggest obstacles in a vocabulary learning for the Chinese students is their difficulty in mobilizing the words they have learned at their disposal to express themselves in a correct and appropriate way. The obstacle, from the perspective of dictionary, lies in the disadvantages of the traditional bilingual dictionaries. In order to overcome the disadvantages of traditional bilingual dictionaries and let French-Chinese dictionaries play a better role in language learning, especially at the level of encoding, the author, inspired by some elements of the Explanatory and Combinatorial Lexicology (ECL) and the application of the theory, proposes a new bilingual dictionary that puts the emphasis on the paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations between lexical items. The new bilingual dictionary, as well as a new systematic pedagogiy in lexicon, is aimed at helping Chinese students to develop a better lexical competence and a better capacity to use the lexicologygraphical tools

Full textOur thesis aims at exploring the intercultural dimension of Italian-French bilingual dictionaries. The first part represents a theoretical approach to the issue. A definition of the concepts of culture and cross-cultural precedes a study of the relationships between languages and cultures. After that, we have dealt with the following themes : the epistemological status of bilingual lexicography and its relationships with linguistics; the semantic hindrances to equivalence; the peculiarity of translation in bilingual lexicography; the contributions of semantics to lexicography. Special attention is also given to the concepts of semantic, referential and cultural gaps and to the lexical gaps in general. In the last two chapters, the focus shifts to connotation and to some approaches that stress the importance of cultural values in language (keywords, mots à charge culturelle partagée, cultural scripts, the depth dimension of language). The second part of our thesis is a corpus-based study on letter A of four Italian-French contemporary dictionaries (Boch, Garzanti, Hachette-Paravia, Larousse). We have tried, in particular, to emphasize the role and the typology of the gaps occurring in the equivalence, especially of cultural gaps. Then, we focus on culture-bound examples, which show the importance of stereotypes and shared points of view in conveying the meaning of the utterances. Finally, we deal with cultural notes and some false borrowings in Italian, in order to illustrate other aspects of equivalence

Full textAs regards all word, one finds several definitions more or less equivalent. The practice of a word doesn't request perfect knowledge of it's meaning. The practice is acquired by the double performance of more or less elaborated explications and positive or negative sanctions resulting from groping experience through the research as " trial and error ". So, the problem of exploitation must be in these conditions : 1) to reduce an information so rich, by reasonable selection. 2) to microsystemise the lexical information for the learner. 3) to anticipate a repeated acquisition by the didactic way

Full textOur thesis deals with the cultural history of the French ↔ Chinese bilingual dictionaries. Our aim is to examine the history of dictionaries through their publishers, lexicographers and printers in order to find characteristics of the selected corpus and to establish a typology of the inventoried dictionaries. This study provides ideas for future work on French and Chinese bilingual lexicography. Our work is divided into two parts : historical study and metalexicographical study. In the historical analysis, a reminder of the chinese history is given at the outset to expose a panorama of the study’s context. The following chapters deal with questions concerning the emergence of bilingual dictionaries in China and their development, publishers and printers, and lexicographers. In the metalexicographic part, emphasis is placed on paratexts, macrostructures, nomenclatures and microstructures. Our research has contributed to the study of French and Chinese bilingual lexicographic

Full textThis study on french-english english-french bilingual dictionaries is primarily concerned with two medium-sized works: the collins and robert and the harrap's shorter. Two main aspects of equivalence will be discussed, namely semantic and functional equivalence. A contrastive analysis will be a prerequisite to the evaluation of some articles appearing in the two dictionaries. First of all, a syntactic analysis of the elements related by english with and french avec will show that the dictionaries list contextual meanings rather than indicate the functional differences existing between the two prepositions. Then, a semantic study concerned with french and english lexical fields will reveal that only partial equivalence can be stated between most pairs of verbs related to olfactory perception. In spite of this, the mentioned dictionaries do not specify the limits of the equivalence, whether semantic, functional or stylistic. Moreover, several equivalents often appear side by side without being discriminated. The observation of specific articles leads to more general questions concerned with lexicographic choices and lexicographical techniques. Problems raised through selective examination and evaluation can finally be gathered, classified and reworded into general suggestions and directions for further research

Full textThe objective of this research is to make a concrete and practical contribution to the still rough knowledge of the bilingual lexicography including both languages : French and Arabic. Indeed, until now, we do not attach enough attention on the French-Arabic, and Arabic-French, bilingual dictionaries, as well as for the methodical aspects they illustrate as for the practical dictionary-making choices. We consult theses dictionaries without testing their limits and shortcomings. Having said that, what are the lexicographic and dictionaric methods recommended in these dictionaries ? What are the essentials characteristics that these dictionaries must have to be able to answer the requirements of the readers ? This study will therefore attempt to describe the lexiographic and dictionaric practices of some bilingual lexicographers, to try to solve some problems bound to the methodology. To learn more about these dictionaries, the bounded corpus of this analysis focuses on three periods : the nineteenth, twentieth and early twenty-first century. The examination of their characteristics and the exploitation of their content reveals that from the dictionaric (dictionnairique) point of view, the lexicographers are not interested enough neither in paratextual elements nor in macrostructural and microstructural semiotics. For example, in the lexicographic prospect, lexicographers do not deal in the same way with the neological processes. Besides, as for phraseology, in this particular case the free phrases, the collocations and the frozen sequences conveying the semantic information, the bilingual lexicographers still too much neglect their organizational aspects in the body of the acticles. As for the definitions, they are very rare. In consequence, the lexicographers do not encode and decode enough the information. Besides, a lot of these dictionaries neglect the importance of the lexicographical speech, so they are less sensitive to the importance of the cultural information. Concerning the iconographic landscape, most of the consulted dictionaries often neglect the importance of the illustration. However, this last one is normally considered as “ […] auxiliary of the idea ”, because the readers always feel “ the need for accurate documents ”. To make better use of the French-Arabic, Arabic-French bilingual dictionaries, it is therefore important and necessary to consider lexicography and practical dictionary-making as two complementary activities

Full textThe history of the Malagasy lexicography begins in 1603, with the publication of the plurilingual dictionary of Frederick de Houtman, a merchant navigator. It continued until the 21st century when in 2019, a bilingual and bidirectional school dictionary for Malagasy school and college students was published. Studies on the history of Malagasy dictionaries are rather recent [J. Dez (1958, 1979, 1991) ; F. Raison Jourde (1977) ; N. Rajaonarimanana (2000)]. As an extension of these works, this thesis deals with the cultural and intellectual history of the first lexicographical repertoires (1603-1773) and the bilingual-printed or manuscript dictionaries produced throughout the 19th century (1816-1896) which are not very well-known and little studied. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first focalises on historical witnesses of the Malagasy language with the analysis of the founding works of Houtman (1603), Flacourt (1658), Drury (1729), Challan (1773)and Froberville (1816). The second part deals with the birth of modern Malagasy lexicography (1818-1835) and historical and metalexicographical analyses of the first bidirectional dictionary of Johns and Freeman (1835). The final part focuses on the typology and the formal study (macrostructure and microstructure) of the 19th century dictionaries. This study aims at placing each lexicographical work in the context of its production from a historical, cultural and linguistic point of view

Full textThis study aims at revealing a little known aspect of bilingual dictionaries published in Algeria during the colonial period (1830-1930), To review this lexicographic heritage, we chose to frame our question in the context of the cultural history of dictionaries combining at the same time the advantages of the historical dimension, the contribution of sociolinguistics and the critical dimension of the French metalexicography. The historical dimension allows us to understand the circumstances that determine and explain the development of the colonial bilingual lexicography. It allows us to recreate the historical context of the emergence of bilingual dictionaries as well as the physical and social conditions of their emergence , while revealing the ideological overtones of their production. The sociolinguistic approach can address colonial bilingual lexicography in all processes of production, reception and social movement, considered in their economic, political, pragmatic and contextual dimensions. The metalexicographic dimension deals with the semiotic analysis of macrostructures, nomenclatures and microstructures through four bilingual dictionaries selected as a corpus (Beaussier, Foucauld, Huyghe and Paulmier). Nowadays, bilingual dictionaries from the colonial period contain both a considerable lexical database and proven lexicographical techniques that could favourably benefit the composition of modern bilingual books. Also, the computerisation sample of Huyghe dictionary aims at putting this lexicographical heritage into perspective in order to develop new modern bilingual dictionaries

Full textThe main objective of the thesis is to improve the treatment of terms (i. E. Words belonging to special fields) in general monolingual and bilingual dictionaries. To reach that goal, the thesis first examines the literature written on that topic by metalexicographers, and the guidelines on the inclusion of terms written by lexicographers. The review of the literature seems to justify why terms are included in general dictionaries from the point of view of lexicographers and metalexicographers. Metalexicographers also assess the treatment of terms as far as the macrostructure and microstructure of the dictionaries are concerned. However, one point of view is missing : that of the user. Thus, a survey was designed and sent to the three categories of users who are most likely to look up terms in a general dictionary : first, scientists; second, langue specialists; three, the general public. The aim was to determine whether they wish to have terms included in their dictionaries, what type of information about terms they look up, and, finally, whether they are satisfied with various aspects of the treatment (such as the total number of terms included, the scientific accuracy of the definitions, the use and number of field labels, etc. ). The results provided by the 647 surveys collected are thoroughly detailed, after the methodology concerning the designing process of the survey has been described. The thesis also analyses the treatment of the vocabulary of one field in particular (volcanology) in several dictionaries (monolingual French dictionaries, monolingual English dictionaries, bilingual English-French dictionaries). The analysis relies on the data provided by two corpora: a comparable corpus, and a translation corpus, both dealing with popular science texts related to volcanology. The corpus-building process is also described step by step. The thesis ends with an explanation about the role of terms in the more general process of knowledge-building

Full textThis study is based on the teaching model of reading French as a foreign language by university students who are beginners in this language in Brazil. After presenting the essential topics of this didactic approach and the issues related to the teaching-learning process when reading in a foreign language, in which the lexical acquisition plays a major role, we present the basics of lexicology and lexical semantics, and finally we portray the works developed in pedagogical lexicography, in which we place this study. Regardless of its dissemination among Latin America students and of its continuous reformulation to account for new learning situations, this teaching method contains some gaps. The gaps refer to a critical issue for a large number of readers: the lack of lexical knowledge. This issue relates not only to a lack of vocabulary knowledge, but also to the ability of word learning. In this study, this question has been further studied based on two experimental researches. The first one, using a more prospective approach, aims at identifying the role of the dictionary–especially bilingual dictionaries–in the reading process and the effects of dictionary use in the construction of meaning. The second one compares the use of two lexicographic instruments: a bilingual dictionary and a pedagogical dictionary for learners of French as a foreign language. Both researches yield important information about the integration of a lexical study with this teaching model; additionally, they are complemented by the analysis of the dictionaries available to this target audience. In this way, we can set methodological principles to build a pedagogical dictionary that helps students in reading activities and that supports vocabulary acquisition on the basis of functional lexicography.

Full textBilingual dictionaries seem to have always been concerned about the issues of establishing equivalence. Within this context, this thesis proposes to examine the various aspects of lexicography in the developments of French-Korean, Korean-French bilingual dictionaries, particularly for the Korean speakers, while trying to rebuild, on a historical and systematic mode, the methodical and rational device that allowed the lexicographers to set meta-lexicographical conditions. This applies to all the factors of logic for dictionary organization at a structural and semantic level. The theoretical development is made to consider how the bilingual dictionaries enhance in quality during a renewal or a new release. Through the study of the eighteen dictionaries written in Korea since the late nineteenth century until today, we can observe the transformation of how the meta-lexicographical method was interpreted in practice and how the concept of contemporary dictionary was developed. This work propose equivalents of two verbs, circuler and éloigner; extracts from the Prime French-Korean Dictionary, as compared how the Grand Robert and the Trésor de la langue française organize meanings

Full textLexical asymmetry and hidden data, i. E. Not directly visible into one lexical entry, are phenomena peculiar to most of the bilingual dictionaries. Our purpose is to establish a methodology to highlight both phenomena by extracting hidden data from the dictionary and by re-establishing symmetry between its two parts. So we studied a large number of verbs and integrated them into a unique multilingual database. In order to offset some lacks of the lexicography, we also studied verb occurrences from a literary database. The purpose is to expand dictionaires' data without criticizing these ones. At last, our database is turned into a "multilexical" graph thanks to an algorithm, which is binding words from different languages into the same semantic space

Full textOur objective in this work es very precise : to give to students of Arabic as a foreign language a linguistic instrument which corresponds to their needs : a selective dictionary with a pedagogical purpose which limits itself to the most useful lexical units with a view to the learning of the basic language system of modern Arabic. As a matter of fact, the teaching of modern languages has experienced throughout the world during about the last 25 years immense changes due in particular to the development of two recent sciences, linguistics and informatics. We have tried to show in this work the most important findings and their effects on the teaching of modern languages in general and of Arabic in particular. This study has enabled us to put into place our methodology concerning the production of a dictionary grouping the fondamental vocabulary destined to the teaching of Arabic : a simple every day vocabulary, understandable by any Arabic speaking person which corresponds to the immediate lexical needs of the users. This dictionary would interest a large and varied public : 1. Arabian countries : schools (example : primary school children) 2. France : a. Introduction to Arabic at University. B. Students of secondary education having chosen Arabic as a foreign language. 3. A public of Arabian origin : pupils or students born in France (commonly called " second generation" speaking French but whose mother tongue is Arabic)

Full textThe automatic processing of the Quechua language (APQL) lacks an electronic dictionary of French Quechua verbs. However, any NLP project requires this important linguistic resource. The present thesis proposes such a dictionary. The realization of such a resource couId also open new perspectives on different domains such as multilingual access to information, distance learning, inthe areas of annotation /indexing of documents, spelling correction and eventually in machine translation. The first challenge was the choice of the French dictionary which would be used as our basic reference. Among the numerous French dictionaries, there are very few which are presented in an electronic format, and even less that may be used as an open source. Among the latter, we found the dictionary Les verbes français (LVF}, of Jean Dubois and Françoise Dubois-Charlier, edited by Larousse en 1997. lt is a remarkably complete dictionary. lt contains 25 610 verbal senses and with open source license. lt is entirely compatible with the Nooj platform. That's why we have chosen this dictionary to be the one to translate into Quechua. However, this task faces a considerable obstacle: the Quechua lexicon of simple verbs contains around 1,500 entries. How to match 25,610 French verbal senses with only 1,500 Quechua verbs? Are we condemned to produce many polysemies? For example, in LVF, we have 27 verbal senses of the verb "tourner" to turn; should we translate them all by the Quechua verb muyuy to turn? Or, can we make use of a particular and remarkable Quechua strategy that may allow us to face thischallenge: the generation of new verbs by suffix derivation? As a first step, we have inventoried ail the Quechua suffixes that make possible to obtain a derived verbal form which behaves as if it was a simple verb. This set of suffixes, which we call IPS_DRV, contains 27 elements. Thus each Quechua verb, transitive or intransitive, gives rise to at least 27 derived verbs. Next, we need to formalize the paradigms and grammars that will allow us to obtain derivations compatible with the morphology of the language. This was done with the help of the NooJ platform. The application of these grammars allowed us to obtain 40,500 conjugable atomic linguistic units (CALU) out of 1,500 simple Quechua verbs. This encouraging first result allows us to hope to get a favorable solution to our project of translation of the 25,000 verbal senses of French into Quechua. At this point, a new difficulty appears: the translation into French of this enormous quantity of generated conjugable verbal forms. This work is essential if we want to obtain the translation of a large part of the twenty-five thousand French verbs into Quechua. ln order to obtain the translation of these CALUs, we first needed to know the modalities of enunciation that each IPS have and transmits to the verbal radical when it is agglutinated to it. Each suffix can have several modalities of enunciation. We have obtained an inventory of them from the corpus, our own experience and some recordings obtained in fieldwork. We constructed an indexed table containing all of these modalities.Next, we used NooJ operators to program grammars that present automatic translation into a glossed form of enunciation modalities. Finally, we developed an algorithm that allowed us to obtain the reciprocal translation from French to Quechua of more than 8,500 Verbal senses of Level 3 and a number of verbal senses of Levels 4 and 5

GROSS’s concept of object classes, which remains the best way of approaching military language specifically action-orientednominal predicates’syntactical properties, and support and appropriate verbs. We drew ourexamples from military action during fieldwork, both home and abroad, and upon the returnhome. Making use of these three phases, we outline syntactical and semantic propertiesspecific to each class of predicates. Part Three is devoted to arguments of three types : human, inanimate and locative ; it follows logically upon our analysis of object classes. Thisdissertation will help us carry out a contrastive analysis with another language as well as thecreation of a bilingual dictionary

Full textThis doctoral thesis on bilingual lexicography, and more precisely on lexicography between Icelandic and French, aims to lay the foundations for a new Icelandic-French dictionary that will be available on-line. To that purpose, we write entries for an Icelandic-French dictionary based on a new lexicographical database for Icelandic (ISLEX). The focus is on the needs of Icelandic users who wish to express themselves in French. However, it is clear that an Icelandic-French dictionary will also be useful for French speakers. Through our lexicographical treatment, we pay special attention to the syntagmatic analysis and to the presentation of more or less fixed phraseological units in a bilingual dictionary such as collocations and set phrases, since we consider that a good bilingual dictionary should take phraseological units into account. Having studied the role and the ideal structure of bilingual dictionaries according to the various functions that they can have, the encoding one and the decoding one, we then discuss phraseology and the importance of set phrases in bilingual dictionaries. The microstructure of our articles is then presented as well as the tools and resources on which we base our work. The outcome of our reflection on the writing of a new Icelandic-French dictionary is shown in the form of dictionary entries followed by remarks where an account is given of the way in which some lexicographical problems are tackled and our lexicographical choices are explained

Full textThis research aims to study the status - place and treatment - of scientific and technical terms in general dictionaries. General dictionaries concentrate on words (or general language lexicon) whereas specialised dictionaries focus on terms (or specialised language lexicon). However, general dictionaries include, in addition to words, a large number of terms. These terms, which are simultaneously included in both dictionaries types, are the subject of this study. Thus, it proposes to examine the following aspects of the term: macrostructural - choice and location - and mircostructual - labelling, definition and exemplification as well as the term’s equivalent in the Arabic bilingual dictionaries. The terms which are used in this research are from various domains. They are extracted from a trilingual English-French-Arabic corpus which consists of texts published by the UN. The status of these terms is analysed according to two monolingual french dictionaries, two monolingual arabic dictionaries and two bilingual french-arabic dictionaries

The aim of this paper is to tackle the issue regarding Catalan collocations expressing intensity and their absence in dictionaries, putting special emphasis on bilingual Catalan-French dictionaries. These collocations are crucial for proper language acquisition, as using them incorrectly may cause miscommunications and can reduce the quality of a written piece drastically. However, bilingual dictionaries often neglect these phrases and monolingual dictionaries only have a small selection of those. There is not a shared theory among linguists and lexicographs on intensity phrases and how to register them, hence their non-standardised treatment in dictionaries. Taking into account Igor Mel’čuk’s Meaning-Text theory on how to apply lexical functions for creating more complex and detailed dictionaries, we decided to create a database of Catalan collocations using the lexical function Magn. Intensity is a universal linguistic value, which is why we believe it is an appropriate starting point for a bilingual dictionary of phrases and collocations. By using our database of Catalan collocations and comparing them with their corresponding French expressions, we were able to research and analyze the various grammar structures of intensity. Finally, we also did a contrastive study of our database in regards to various online and physical dictionaries.

Full textThis study is bent on considering the possible applications and limits of linguistic theories to lexicography. More precisely the goal is to examine the theoretical and methodological problems raised by the lexicological treatment of verbs in bilingual dictionaries, in this case, french-korean, on a syntaxical basis, and the possible contributions of recent linguistic results to the lexicography, especially those furnished by the automatic documentary and linguistic laboratory. After having paid attention to the general evaluation of the problems, certain of the encountered difficulties have been considered in the application of the lexico-grammar. As far as equivalence is considered, the classes of verbal constructions of both studied languages have been compared to the translation postulate of "construction to construction". Through these reflections, two main directions have been drawn for modification of the structuration of the verb's article: - first of all, the dispersion of highly heterogeneous structures that are concentrated in the same structure, - and secondly, the concentration of structures of connectable usage that have been dispersed

Full textAt present, the key issue is that of energy transition, smart cities, connected objects, renewable energy... We wanted to create this dictionary in order to provide concrete answers to some challenges faced in this sector. The aim was to show some tools used by the translator or linguist to create a bilingual dictionary available online. Nevertheless, given the multitude of software in the market, we have decided to delimit the experimental phase. We opted for among other SDL Trados Studio 2011, Trados 7 Freelance, TermoStat, TerMine and Multiterm. The theories and books of renowned linguists, including Wüster, Gouadec or Nolet, inspired our thoughts. We also opted for a method that is both explanatory and experimental. Our corpus of 130 pages has allowed us to extract a total of over 3,000 terms on two different tools. Software proved to be restrictive depending on the volume of the project or even the editor of the Software. It turned out that the automation of the corpus analysis certainly helped to save time, but the choice of terms could be questioned. The English - French bilingual dictionary www.lexiterme.com is already available online although at this point, it is still a pilot version. Keywords: terminology, dictionary, database, corpus analysis, lexicography

Full textThe thesis in general is relevant to Arabic studies. It is related to an intersection of two disciplines of the science of language: translation studies and bilingual lexicography. The last mentioned is linked to the translation itself also the meaning issue, more particular, the original text. It represents the crossing point of complex relations between science of translation and lexicography, this issue that we’ll try to solve in the actual work, it will be more about the translation of the Arabic language to the French language and the analyzing of semantic relations of the original text which is the Arabic language in this case. The problem of the bilingual dictionaries Arabic-French is the problem that we’ll look into during all the work of the thesis. That is why we gave a lot of thinking about the necessity of the original language to be confronted by itself according to what Jacobson (1963) has called “intralingual translation”. So we tried to study the lexical data of the language, by analyzing the data of the Arabic language itself while counting on the information given by the monolingual dictionaries that we have chosen. It is known that the bilingual dictionary related to Arabic language has appeared a while after the monolingual dictionary. The Arabic lexicography also known by its richness and its medieval production diversity between the 8th and the 18th centuries. Plus, the Arabic lexicography was not used as it should be and there was not a lot of studies of the subject. The goal of the first part is to use the translation perspective in a hand, and the lexicography from another hand, the object is to introduce the theoretical part in general, the bilingual lexicographical approach, from the semantic analysis of monolingual dictionary in developing the bilingual dictionary. The second part focuses on a study of the monolingual lexicography Arabic to determine its relationship with the bilingual Arabic lexicography. The third and final part focuses on bilingual dictionaries reconsidered in the case of Arabic dictionaries. These dictionaries are indeed led by the necessity to consider two major characteristics of the vocabulary of the language, which is structured around two major areas of semantic families "crossed": Formal roots and their by-roots and grammatical senses associated with morphological syllabic patterns
