Full textThis research is aimed at encouraging and empowering the Northern Sotho speaking people to make use of idioms in their everyday communication. A deep explanation of idioms was done as to how, where and when to use them. It has been discovered that idioms are not properly used at different places and levels. The researcher urges people to make use of idioms because they are rich with cultural values such as love and respect. It is very important, therefore, to understand and use idioms correctly as they have the literal as well as the figurative meanings.

Disserta??o (Mestrado Profissional) ? Programa de P?s-Gradua??o em Educa??o, Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri, 2017.
The aim of this research is to analyse the approach of teaching prosody and, mainly, of order and request acts in Brazilian Portuguese in the activities of four didactic materials of Brazilian Portuguese as a foreign language used in courses of Portuguese as a foreign Language at N?cleo de L?nguas of Federal University of Jequitinhonha and Mucuri Valleys up to the year 2016. The teaching of prosody and the acts of order and request becomes relevant for foreign speakers since they are resources that integrate the linguistic system (SEARLE, 1981) and in them are printed cultural traits of Brazilian Portuguese (BODOLAY, 2009). In order for the speaker to differentiate a directive act from an order to a request, he/she must be aware of the prosodic clues used by the speaker, the social roles they occupy in the context of communication and other extralinguistic resources that interfere in the interpretation of the utterance. Thus, these resources are totally unique to a language, according to Marcuschi (2001) and Cruz-Ferreira (2003), making it essential for the communication of a foreign speaker. In order to achieve the central objective of this study, we used, as a collection of data and analysis instrument, the content an analysis technique of Bardin (2011). As a main result we find that both prosody and order and request acts are little explored or even ignored. When there is an approach with deals with these aspects of spoken language, the styles of the materials activities do not use oral resources, making use of writing to teach orality.
Tofighian, Nadi. "The role of Jose Nepomuceno in the Philippine society : What language did his silent films speak?" Thesis, Stockholm University, Department of Cinema Studies, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-899.
Full textThis paper examines the role of the pioneer Filipino filmmaker Jose Nepomuceno and his films in the Philippine quest for independence and in the process of nation-building. As all of Nepomuceno's films are lost, most of the information was gathered from old newspaper articles on microfilm in different archives in Manila. Many of these articles were hitherto undiscovered. Nepomuceno made silent films at a time when the influence of the new coloniser, United States, was growing, and the Spanish language was what unified the intellectual opposition. Previous research on Nepomuceno has focused on the Hispanic influences on his filmmaking, as well as his connections to the stage drama. This paper argues that Nepomuceno created a national consciousness by making films showing native lives and environments, adapting important Filipino novels and plays to the screen and covering important political topics and thereby creating public opinion. Many reviews in the newspapers connected his films to nation-building and independence, as the creation of a national consciousness is a cornerstone in the process of building a nation and defining "Filipino". Furthermore, the films of Nepomuceno helped spreading the Tagalog culture and language to other parts of the Philippines, hence making Tagalog the foundation of the national Filipino language.

Full textThe starting point for this study is the supposition that, under the process of consciousness development, in O Dia dos Prodígios, narrative work written by the contemporary Portuguese writer Lídia Jorge, lies a series of references to how the character\'s state of consciousness is and develops along the story. Thus the purpose of this analysis is to verify the state of consciousness of the inhabitants of Vilamaninhos, a small Portuguese village, as well as the dynamics of the transition from such precarious level to a more developed one, the latter illustrated by the female characters of Branca Volante and Carminha Parda, and also by the male character of Macário, who represents a kind of medieval troubadour of the village. This analysis takes into account the confrontation between the inhabitants and the soldiers, who represent the cultured and civilized world (in opposition to the archaic community of Vilamaninhos), and who will tell the villagers the great news about The Oillet Revolution, historic event that fits as a background for the development of the plot. Personal contacts among the villagers and with the outsiders (like the soldiers, for example), their language, the myths supporting their conception of reality are also examined. The socio-historical context of the Oillet Revolution is also investigated, for it helps to understand the villager\'s rudimentary state of consciousness as to the apprehension of reality, their disconnection with the civilized world and their consequent inner disconnection, which makes them sense-emptied individuals. Thereby, such rudimentary level of consciousness shows the villager\'s alienation relatively to the rest of society, and the study of this social situation instigates reflections about human relations.

Full textBackground: Person-centered care is dependent on communication between healthcare provider and patient. The proportion of foreign-born in Sweden and the rest of the world increases. A group with less access to healthcare and poorer health than non-foreign-born. This presents major challenges to healthcare. Objective: To describe patient´s experiences of communicating with healthcare professionals in the absence of a common mother tongue. Methods: A literature review consisting of 14 articles with a qualitative approach that were retrieved from the databases CINAHL and PsycINFO. Analysis was made using an inductive approach resulting in four categories. Results: Language barriers affect quality of, and access to care. Communication in healthcare was perceived as more difficult than other communication and might lead to patients distancing themselves from healthcare professionals. Empathy, patience and interest from healthcare professionals improves patient´s experience. Informal interpreters are often used due to a lack of knowledge regarding professional interpreters. Conclusions: Healthcare availability for persons experiencing language barriers needs to increase. Professionals need to adapt their language and ensure that patients understand. Healthcare professionals must inform patients about, and assist with appropriate interpreters based on the person’s preferences. Further research may identify alternate ways to work person-centered despite language barriers.

The objective of this work is to analyse how the Brazilian people show or express acts of thanking and also to bring a contribuition to the description of the Portuguese language so as to contribute to its approach as a second language (PL2), thus helping the teachers in their task of giving lesson to foreigner. In the Brazilian Portuguese the act of thanking is a kind of ritual that involves a variety of verbal and non-verbal resources, which are employed by the native speaker in order to realize it adequately. However, we have to consider as well that multiple factors interfere in the social and linguistic behavior of the Brazilian people at the time they realize this act of communication . This research is theorelically based on the Sociolinguistic Interactional, on the Intercultural Communication and also on the Cultural Anthropology. The corpus of this work was formed from the analysis of scenes of a TV sit-com named A grande família presented by Rede Globo de Televisão during the years of 2003 and 2004. The presented scenes reproduce the common behavior of a regular family in Rio de Janeiro. The study observing the use of thanks among the characters was complemented with the analysis of three textbooks for the teaching of Portuguese as second language. Based on these two sources, we decided to investigate the main expressions of thanking used by Brazilians, as well as the factors that interfere in the choices of the speakers in this type of interaction.

Full textIn this dissertation, O Dia em Que Matamos James Cagney: from a printed to a digital version, our aim is to create a multimedia e-book from the short story O Dia em Que Matamos James Cagney by Moacyr Scliar, originally published in the author s debut book, O carnaval dos animais (1968) and later included in different anthologies. The choice for this tale is justified because it has a narrative that focuses in the audience reactions in face of a film screening as a theme. Having as hypotheses the possibility to establish parallels between different languages, the transposition of the Scliar s tale to an e-book will permit us to discuss the limits and possibilities of the digital language as a medium to literature. The options to the digital product proposed here are based on the text analysis of the short story, and for that, we have considered: a) its possible connection to the fantastic gender; b) the reception of the cinematographic narrative held in the story.
