Abstract:
This paper analyses the didactic miscellany collections for young female readers by the English writer Charlotte Smith. In these texts, through dialogues and conversations, the young protagonists are seen to learn from their daily experiences of walking in the natural world. Smith’s texts also offer remarkable examples of girls on the move in another sense, in that some of the young female protagonists appear to be escaping from distressing family and financial circumstances, in search of better life opportunities.

This article discusses the sources of individual (not typical for other editions of the Prologue) sermons of the Pskov edition for September — November. Research has found that the closest source of the main part of borrowings is the Saratov edition of Zlatostruy (Chrysorrhoas Collection) known in the copy of the end of the 15th century. The question of how to design and implement efficient remote learning environments gains a new quality in the light of extensive digital education projects such as the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) initiative. At the core of this consideration is not only the task of developing content for very different cultural settings but also the necessity to reflect the effects of learning processes that operate exclusively with digitally mediated content. This chapter outlines the design strategies of the project Venture to the Interior, an interactive experience that presents selected objects from the collections of the Museum of Natural History in Berlin, Germany, and displays them in a context reflecting the museum as an institution and the practices of collecting as knowledge constitution. The project investigates the role of objects as knowledge devices and the possibilities for a translation of the didactic effects of experiential learning into virtual environments.

The essay investigates the production of scientific images and threedimensional models in the effervescent dialogue between art and science of eighteenth-century Tuscany. Created to meet new didactic needs, these technical images, such as the anatomical tables conceived by anatomist Paolo Mascagni for the students of the Academy of Fine Arts, abandoned the Vesalian topos of the cadaver as a life-like statue and gave rise to a novel lithic iconography, which emphasised the textured materiality of human remains and their potential transformations across the natural and artificial realms. The miscegenation of manufactures and natural productions was given pride of place in anatomical and botanical atlases, as well as in the scientific collections that sprung up in Tuscany at the time.

Abstract:
This chapter assesses the representation of exotica in European art. This depiction sheds considerable light on the constructs of veracity and the bounds of imagery, from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century. In addition to their subsidiary but vital roles in historical landscape and commemorative narrative, exotica served as the principals in natural history illustration. Among the first works with detailed, if schematized, illuminations of flora and fauna were religious texts and medieval editions of ancient medical treatises. These largely didactic presentations of European plants and animals provided the pictorial structure for the earliest renderings of exotica. Whether artists drew them from life in the course of their travels, viewed them in menageries and botanical gardens, or based their illustrations on collections of dried or stuffed specimens, they placed their subjects against uniformly plain backgrounds. Land mammals, aquatic creatures, and plants were suspended in a pristine world, while birds were shown perched upon accessory branches.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on R. Naphtali Zevi Horowitz of Ropczyce. What is known of the life of R. Naphtali is drawn mainly from collections of hasidic hagiography published many years after his death. The hagiographical literature of hasidism—a large body of oral traditions committed to writing long after the events they describe—is highly problematic and its validity as historical source material has been frequently questioned. The chapter distinguishes between didactic material, which offers virtually no insight into the historical reality of R. Naphtali, and such concrete historical details as do occasionally occur in the tales, furnishing the background against which the plots are developed. It is worth remembering that R. Naphtali's homiletic writings were published long before any of the hagiographical works about him. His two homiletic works, Ayalah sheluḥzah (Lemberg, 1862) and Zera kodesh (Lemberg, 1868), appeared many years after his death (in 1827) since he did not allow them to be published.

Abstract:
In this chapter, 1 look at intertextual resonances with proverbial wisdom, notably from the sayings collection (10:1–22:16) showing how the didactic method of proverbial maxims as found in Proverbs (ethical emphasis) is applied in Ruth. The character of Ruth reveals that she is not simply a woman of worth (a comparison often made of Ruth with Prov 31) but she is a more profound exemplar of the values embodied in proverbial wisdom. Ruth links up with the wisdom ideal, not simply through her female figure/worthy womanliness/wife and mother role. It is of interest here how a narrative text links up with more abstract moral qualities as found in Proverbs. Rather than producing a maxim and then finding a story to illustrate it, a story is illustrated by a wider paradigm. This gives the story didactic ‘thrust’ (Cheung) for the reader. Whether these connections were in any way meant by an author is a separate question to the fact that these resonances are found in the text in its present form. I shall treat them as synchronic intertextual resonances with the possibility open that diachronic resonances may also have been intended. I am coining the phrase ‘didactic intertextuality’ to explain this phenomenon, which is potentially much wider than simply this one example and might be applied to other narratives.

Abstract:
This chapter considers the Robinsonade within the framework of the children’s collection of Cork Public Library in the post-revolutionary period of the early twentieth century. It examines how the repeated purchasing of copies of Robinson Crusoe for circulation to Free State children may be interpreted within the context of the Gaelic Revivalist movement. Furthermore, two specific texts are considered: T.C. Bridges’ Martin Crusoe: A Boy’s Adventure on Wizard Island (1920), a self-conscious Robinsonade, and a 1936 account of an Irish missionary’s experiences in Africa, African Adventure, by Father James O’Mahoney. The chapter argues that both texts exhibit characteristic Robinsonade qualities (the colonialist impulses of which are framed by ennobling justifications), and, ultimately, that the colonial novel was in many ways compatible with post-colonial Ireland’s nationalist ideology.

Abstract:
This chapter argues that, despite the differences of form, the seven orations included in this collection constituted a unitary collection and, for this reason, one should consider their interrelations as well as their distinctive features. Furthermore, the seven orations establish a tight connection with the preceding work, the Foundations, with which they share several themes. Admittedly, far from being a text focused on kingship, the Orations are rather geared towards the presentation of an individual’s acquisition of moral values. The correlation between ethics, the rulers’ virtues and rhetorical skills is framed in a tradition that originated in the writings of the rhetoricians of Hellenistic and Graeco-Roman times. Yet in Manuel’s case, through the development of the idea of a special kind of imperial behaviour, the presentation of moral virtues reflects, on the one hand, such a tradition and, on the other hand, an insight that could only have come with practical experience. Drawing on multiple philosophical sources, this formulation of imperial behaviour was based on the ideal of tolerance, with strong bonds of friendship and values such as education and moderate enjoyment of life.

A first part presents more than one hundred auscultation methods for "materials" and "structures" that are sufficiently valid, giving for each method its principle, its field of application, the limits and conditions of use, the specific constraints, the precision of the measurements, as well as elements on the availability and the cost. A second part presents the diagnostic methodologies combining various auscultation

Software engineering is a profession, that requires expertise, but also underlies fast changes of contents and requirements. To cope with these challenges students in this subject need self-directed learning competencies. This paper explores Just-in-Time Teaching as one exemplary teaching method known to support self-directed learning processes. The focus in this analysis lies on a didactical evaluation of the sensitive use of this method concerning the special target group of software engineering students, the teaching content and material. The aim is to avoid a mere transfer of didactical ap

The RION project (financed by BMBF) aims at improving Computer & Law (C&L) teaching in Germany while implementing Web-based media. For the fluid and interdisciplinary field of C&L, educational material is very scarce. Furthermore, educational cultures differ according to the divers affiliations of C&L. Therefore, the RION platform will present a variety of documents online, which have not been accessible on the Web before. However, publishing law collections online can only be one step to improve C&L teaching. Therefore, RION is trying to develop a didactical conception for
