Abstract:
We propose a shift in the traditional way to teach Entomology for undergraduate and postgraduate courses. We envisage a system in which undergraduate and postgraduate students interact, discussing Entomology outside the classroom. This would get them to actively seek for knowledge, rather than being paternalistically told how they should learn. Such a system does not preclude lectures as a didactic strategy, nor it rules out lecturers as responsible for instructorship. On the contrary, we believe lectures and discussion outside classroom are complementary for effective teaching. Our results sh

This study aims at presenting memes as a teaching technique and the students' perspectives on the use of memes in education. Two groups of 35 and 31 students, ranged from 18 to 33 years old, enrolled in the entomology classes in a public university in Ecuador, participated in this project. The didactic sequence was put into practice from November 2020 to March 2021, and it was based on Marcuschi (2008). Students were asked to create a meme related to each unit of the course. To collect the data, one online questionnaire was used to get to know the participants' perspectives at the end of the s

The use of game activities is spreading in diverse contexts, including stimulating teamwork and creativity, selecting job candidates, and as a teaching aid. Games are recognized as promoting interaction and engagement among children through an abstract challenge, which often results in emotional reactions. We investigated whether a game-based activity is useful as a tool for teaching entomology, as assessed on the basis of the learning achieved and the feedback provided by students. Insects represent a relevant didactic resource to work with artistic skills, concepts, attitudes and values in the Science teaching because they are diversified in forms and colors, and because they have different life styles. However, there are relatively few reports of experience with evidence of their importance as a didactic resource. In this sense, our main aims were to describe and analyze: (1) the perceptions of seventh-year elementary school students of a public school in Uberlândia-MG, Brazil, about insects; and (2) a didactic sequence in which insects are used to work concepts, artis

Despite the great ecological, economic, and social importance of insects, they are mainly known either for causing damage or for their benefits to human society, creating a dualistic concept of insects that is largely pejorative. To reduce the perpetuation of this trend and develop a better understanding of these organisms, the "Insects in School" project has developed a series of activities and educational resources to assist in meeting this goal. Insects play a highly important role in the ecological field, especially playing a fundamental role in the pollination of flowering plants, an essential process for the preservation of life and biological diversity. Among the insects, there are those considered as pests. This is the case of Spodoptera frugiperda J.E. Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctidae) also known as fall armyworm, native to tropical areas. The present work aims to present a discussion about the life cycle and protocols for rearing, in the laboratory, of S. frugiperda, in order to contribute as a didactic tool for the teaching of sci
