Abstract:
This thesis examines the development of an anorexic discourse in Goethe's Die Wahlverwandtschaften. Chapter 1 investigates anorexia as a cultural signifier and its relationship to non-clinical and non-medical disciplines. I then submit that female self-starvation serves a structural and a thematic function in WV. In Chapter 2, I argue that Ottilie's arrested female development illustrates the central, concept (elective affinities) of the novel. Chapter 3 examines food as a non-verbal system of communication in the narrative. Here, I demonstrate that Ottilie's eating disorder denies her subjectivity while it signifies and affirms the dominant social institutions depicted in the novel. Chapter 4 examines Ottilie's oscillation between corporeality and bodilessness. Her physicality is always associated with instability. The disappearance of her flesh allows for the passive reflection of masculine identity. In Chapter 5, I analyze the representation of Otttilie's death and demonstrate that her corpse allegorizes the construction of subjectivity in the narrative. In closing, I argue that Ottilie is an empty signifier in the novel, onto which the plot is imposed. Her anorexia functions as a sign for the process of narration and is a condition of the novel itself.

Steele, Melodie Joy. "Ottilie: Expression of the Ideal of Romantic Childlikeness in Goethe's Wahlverwandtschaften." PDXScholar, 1996. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/5201.

Full text
Abstract:
The interpretation of Ottilie in Goethe's Wahlverwandtschaften stems from an understanding of romantic motifs, which find their most systematic expression in her childlike character. Ottilie embodies the romantic idealization of childhood as a means of withdrawal from the enlightened world, echoing the Romantics' rejection of the disenchanted Age of Enlightenment. Through her portrayal of innocent childlikeness, her adolescent conflict with the rational world, and her final rejection of enlightenment, Ottilie maintains her childlike purity, expressing the romantic ideal of childhood. Ottilie's childlike emotional disposition puts her in conflict with the enlightened world of adults and academia. In an attempt to maintain her childlike innocence, she separates herself from the present world and establishes ties to the medieval past through monastic duties and catholic sympathies. However, Ottilie's attempt to remain separate is futile due to her enlightened surroundings. Her journey toward self-awareness begins as a result of her love for Eduard, whose sexual thoughts of Ottilie launch her into a state of adolescence, against which she unconsciously struggles. Continual contact with the enlightened world weakens Ottilie's efforts to maintain ties to her childlike state. In her weakened condition she is unable to resist Eduard's continual amorous pursuits and openly displays her affection for him with a kiss. Her inner turmoil, resulting from her deliberate indiscretion causes the accidental drowning of Charlotte's and Eduard's baby Otto, which illuminates the iniquitous nature of her love for Eduard. She makes the decision to reject full enlightenment and transcends her human frailty by becoming saint-like. Through renunciation, which results in her sacrificial death, she spurns enlightenment and returns to a state of everlasting purity. As the portrayal of the romantic ideal of a maintained childhood innocence, Ottilie seems to be a vehicle to express either Goethe's commendation of condemnation of Romanticism. For the romantic, Ottilie's life and death are a triumph, for she succeeds in passing from this world, having proceeded from innocent child to saint into everlasting life. For the non-romantic, Ottilie's death is a tragedy, for she never reaches true enlightenment and never develops to her full potential.

Summers, Alison. "Tell-tale elusiveness : a study of the narrative in Goethe's Die Wahlverwandtschaften." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2007. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1446178/.

Abstract:
This Thesis offers a detailed analysis of Goethe's novel, Die Wahlverwandtschaften. It argues that the narrator of the novel is a complex entity, whose performance shifts between the disincarnate, un-personalized voice and the involved, personalized teller of the tale. It is suggested that the narrator makes his presence felt through generalizations and comments, and through the existence of a judgmental tone and reflective voice. A detailed reading of the episodes of narrative presence is undertaken. Central to this thesis is the contention that the narrative style does not remain constant, and the various implications of narrative presence and absence are examined. The interpolated texts within the novel are studied. The reader registers the gaps in the text precisely because such a strong voice has, at times, been heard, and it is this void which is shown to provide the reader with an invitation to interpret and question both the text and the process of patterning by the narrator and by the character themselves. The thesis enters into a debate with Gordon Burgess* A Computer Assisted Analysis of Goethe's Die Wahlverwandtschaften and his claim that the narrator is a manipulative character is challenged. John Banville's The Newton Letter is offered as an example of sophisticated intertextual reference and debate between literary works separated by almost two centuries. The issue of the experimenter as on the one hand separate from and on the other implicated in his experiment is discussed. In conclusion, it is argued that the shifting narrative performance in Die Wahlverwandtschften is the key to the enduring appeal of the novel.

Abstract:
The first sentence of Goethe's 'Elective Affinities' poses many questions: Who is meant by the personal pronoun 'we' that calls a young baron Eduard? And are we to rely on that unusual literary naming procedure that intentionally destroys all fictional illusions? Further on in the novel we are informed that it is actually not a mysterious 'we', but rather that the wealthy baron himself, whose 'real' name was Otto, had chosen this name. This essay tries to elucidate the motives and intentions underlying Goethe's ambiguous and capricious game which he plays with the reader's expectations.

Elective Affinities (Die Wahlverwandtschaften, 1809) by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is an imbricated novel, elaborated by symbols repeated throughout the narrative, which build a complex and organized structure. The essential element for the organization of this novel is inserted narratives: Ottilie's diary, the tableaus and the novel Die Wunderlichen Nachbarskinder , which constitute the main narrative. The objective of this doctoral thesis is to analyze how these inserted narratives are grafted in the novel, what is the relationship between the main narrative and inserted narratives and how they work in the novel. The study is done as a Close Reading, that finds significant interrelationships of the main narrative in the inserted narratives and vice versa. The theories of Barthes and Bachelard provide a fresh look at the Goethean work and were used as theoretical foundation of this thesis.

Abstract:
Based on an analysis of two experimental novels of the 19th Century -The Elective Affinities ( 1809) by Johann Wolfgang Goethe and Bouvard et Pécuchet (1880/81) by Gustave Flaubert, this dissertation aims at making a contribution to both existing research on fiction al encyclopaedias and, more largely, to the study of the complex relationships between literature, science and knowledge. The first chapter introduces current theoretical debates on the relationships between literary theory and the history of science. It discusses existing theoretical approaches to encyclopaedic literature at hand as well as their attempts at giving a definition of an encyclopaedic novel. The second chapter traces the social and intellectual history of encyclopaedia from its roots in the baroque era to the late 19th Century. It offers a detailed analyses of a specific discourse that reflected the human strive to collect, order and systematize knowledge. Analysing in detail the reception of Goethe by Flaubert shows that Goethean universalism and his objective writing have strongly influenced the reception of the German writer in the late nineteenth century France. Focusing on the figures of the knowing subject, encyclopaedic spaces, themes and motifs, my analyses of both texts reveals how both authors take similar formal decisions when addressing encyclopaedic issues in the novel. Among the various fields of knowledge that are embraced in both novels, I focus on three areas of knowledge chemistry, education and botany, that embodied the new scientific spirit of the 19th Century, as well as three different forms of reflection on and criticism of the encyclopaedic project

Weinheimer, Johannes. "Was ist link(s) und recht(s)? Eine Untersuchung der moralischen Gesetzmäßigkeiten in Goethes Die Wahlverwandtschaften." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/6115.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This thesis asks the question "Does the use of the words 'left' and 'right' (links / rechts), and their various lexical forms in Goethe‘s Wahlverwandtschaften constitute a systematic pattern which can be applied to interpret the novel as a whole?" It argues that to simply interpret the text on the basic semantic levels of these words—left indicating wrong and false, right indicating good and correct—would fail to reflect the complicated meanings and functions for each in the thematic content of the work. In addition to these two extremes, the 'middle' zone, the space between the two extremes, has an important function in the work and must be part of any broader interpretation. It combines both extremes, creates a neutral field, and also leads to a second important element, 'Gesetzmäßigkeit', roughly translated, 'systematization' which is crucial to an understanding of the novel as a whole. The thesis begins with an overview and discussion of research in German and English on the novel, narrowing its selection to the titles most pertinent to the present study, a necessary reduction given the vastness of extant research on Goethe and this novel. Using hermeneutic methodology based on Gadamer‘s theory, it then argues for and against the position of moral relativity with respect to the thematics of the novel at hand. The themes of morality, legality, and mirroring structures in society receive particular attention, so too Goethe‘s own position on these topics, as well as religion, which are reflected at least to some extent in the work, though the study goes well beyond that autobiographical level. For his lexical foundation, the author has investigated all occorrences of the words 'left' and 'right' in the novel, and their lexical variants, and has selected the most meaningful as the basis for detailed discussion. Still, all instances are offered to the reader in a separate appendix, if desired. The corpus analysis focusses on the main characters and passages relevant to them. After discussion of the research to date, an overview of the methodology, an outline of Goethe‘s position on morality, Christianity, and religion in general, and a detailed account of the presence of the words left and right and their variants in the novel, the thesis offers chapters on all of the main characters as well as a final one on peripheral figures, in each case analyzing the individuals within the context of the concepts left and right and their connotations. The conclusion (Fazit) summarizes its contribution to Goethe research and the new insights it offers with regard to Die Wahlverwandtschaften, namely, that the concepts of left and right do indeed form the basis of a structural pattern; that this has meaning in the moral, religious, and societal sense; and that it is basic to the notion of structural systematization in the work. It also goes further to suggest productive avenues for future research on this novel, including its connections to the work of Goethe‘s contemporary William Blake, Goethe‘s "Theory of Colours", and modern interpretations of the whole.

Rothne, Zadori Zsuzsanna. "Decoding Charlotte's Prevalence. A Kristevian Approach to the Representation of Femininity in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Die Wahlverwandtschaften." 2010. http://trace.tennessee.edu/utk_graddiss/746.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines Goethe’s portrayal of femininity in Die Wahlver-wandtschaften and how his depiction of all three central female characters relates to feminine ideals that were promoted through the theoretical gender debate of the late 1700s in Germany and Western Europe. I analyze Charlotte’s, Luciane’s, and Ottilie’s actions and interactions in various triadic character constellations in order to offer new insights into Goethe’s portrayal of femininity. In so doing, I argue that Goethe’s depiction of Charlotte holds the key to understanding how far Die Wahlverwandtschaften functions as (critical) commentary on the late Enlightenment gender discourse. I maintain that the actions and interactions of these three women show them as at times ‘unfit’ and/or unwilling to meet feminine ideals promoted in the late Enlightenment. I apply central concepts of Julia Kristeva’s psychoanalytic theory from the 1970s and 1980s as analytical tools to examine how far Goethe’s Wahlverwandt-schaften can be viewed as a critique of the norms and expectations commonly expressed in the late Enlightenment. I primarily focus on Kristeva’s concepts of subjectivity formation, semiotic and symbolic modalities, abjection, and her theorizing of motherhood. Kristeva’s emphasis on the pivotal role of the maternal function in the child’s identity formation and her representation of femininity as alterity allow me to explore the significance of Charlotte’s prevalence among the characters and to approach Goethe’s ambiguous and complex portrayal of unsteady, constantly shifting, and interrelated models of femininity in Charlotte, Luciane, and Ottilie as a narrative experiment in which he tests the viability of such models within the surrounding social discourse. In the main body of this dissertation, I begin by concentrating on Charlotte’s partnerships with men, and then I focus on her maternal role in relation to Luciane, Ottilie, and Otto. By making Charlotte the ‘epicenter’ of this investigation, I explore how far Goethe shapes her, Luciane, and Ottilie as characters who transgress late Enlightenment gender boundaries and thus deviate from what were considered ‘feminine ideals’ in order to underscore the arbitrary and contradictory nature of the prevalent social order.
