Human, Berquin. "Resilience in families in which a parent has died." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/52434.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2001.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The death of a parent calls on the family to utilize all its resources in order to adapt successfully and maintain normal family functioning. Within the mental health field a paradigm-shift from pathology-based to health-oriented is underway. Integral to this health-oriented paradigm is resilience, the ability to rebound after being stressed or challenged, as well as being able to rise above adversity and to survive stress. Family resilience theory emphasizes the role that family characteristics, behaviour patterns and capabilities play in cushioning the impact of stressful life events and in assisting the family in recovering from crises (McCubbin, Thompson, & McCubbin, 1996). Using a crosssectional survey research design, the present study aimed to explore and explicate those resiliency factors which enable families to adjust and adapt successfully after the loss of a parent. Families in which the death of a parent took place 1 to 3 years ago, and in which the eldest child was between 12 and 19 years old were approached to take part in this study. Thirty nine families completed questionnaires, as well as an open-ended question in which they were asked to report the most important factors or strengths which they felt helped their family through the stressful period. Results indicate that intrafamilial support such as emotional and practical support amongst family members, and family hardiness characteristics such as the internal strengths and durability of the family unit, contribute to resilience within the family. Individual characteristics, such as positive personality characteristics like optimism, are as important. Support from extended family and friends, as well as support obtained from religious and spiritual beliefs and activities, were reported as facilitating successful adjustment to the loss.

Abstract:
Thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for a degree of Masters of Arts in the Department of Counselling Psychology at the University of Zululand, South Africa, 2005.
The present study aimed to identify those resiliency factors that enabled Indian families to transform and adapt after the loss of a family member. Using a convenience sampling method, thirty families were identified. Open-ended questions and the following measurement scales were completed by the parent and an adolescent of each selected family: a biographical questionnaire, Social Support Index, Relative and Friend Support Index, Family Problem Solving Communication Index, Family Hardiness Index, The family Attachment and Changeability Index 8, and Family Time and Routine Index. Results show that open communication between family members, religion, support of relatives and friends, problem solving communication, family hardiness, mobilization of the family to get help, redefinition of the problem, family time and routine were the resiliency factors identified in this study.

Abstract:
This is the story of a financial literacy endeavor that sputtered, surged, and then died. While it did not succeed at my institution, I share the story and the resources in the hope that its successes and failures might be of use to others. Although I had already been a professional librarian for seven years when I took my new position as Graduate Research and Instruction Librarian at East Tennessee State University near the beginning of fall semester 2014, I had never worked in public services. Fortunately, I had been a teacher, received professional training in pedagogy, and was comfortable with the instruction piece of my job. “Outreach” was a little more difficult. For my first effort, I chose something I believed would appeal to a wide diversity of students: money.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigated family grief and resilience following a child’s death. Representing 23 families, 35 bereaved parents completed biographical questionnaires, the Family Hardiness Index, and the Family Attachment and Changeability Index 8. Significant positive correlations were found between family hardiness and family adaptation, and between parents’ age and family hardiness. Using grounded theory, interviews allowed for the formulation of categories including grief, continuing bonds, external support, religion, and family hardiness. The study reveals the need for exploring unique experiences of families bereaved by children’s deaths and identifies family hardiness as a potential resilience factor for this population

Cotten, Caitlin. "Individual Experience, Individualized Help: A Case Study of Three Siblings Whose Father Died by Suicide." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2020. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/9079.

Full text
Abstract:
This qualitative case study describes the disparate experiences of how three siblings reacted and were affected by their father's suicide death. Specifically, through individual interviews, this study explores the siblings' individual memories, emotions, and perceptions of support connected with the time directly before and after their father's death. In addition, the researchers considered the long-term effects of their father's death by suicide as lived by the sibling survivors. In seeking to understand the siblings' experiences, this study also explores each sibling's reaction as they were presented with a group of children's picture books that were developed to help children express their emotions and are used by therapists who counsel with children bereaved by suicide. Findings suggested that, although the siblings shared the trauma of the father's suicide, each had different perceptions and experiences surrounding that trauma; they also reacted differently to the books presented to them. Implications for practice for teachers, parents, and school-based mental health practitioners (e.g., school psychologist and school counselors) are provided. These implications include the importance of knowing the specifics of each child's perceptions and providing supportive interventions that match the individual child's needs. Also, when selecting therapeutic books to share with a grieving child, consider presenting options and allowing the child to select a book. Also, be aware that a book that is preferred by one child, may not be preferred by another. Additionally, certain pictures included in children's books may trigger memories of the parent's suicide that could potentially further traumatize the child.

Full text
Abstract:
While studies in the social sciences have looked at lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth, few have focused on how they experience school. Sexual orientation is still a taboo subject or only treated cursorily in educational institutions and teacher-training programmes. Research that does look at schools is mitigated by subjects who are at different degrees of being out in their schools, or are treated as a monolith with other LGBT youth, or have been recruited through psychosocial agencies, and by data gathered retrospectively and/or at arms-length through surveys.
This dissertation describes the experience of being gay and out at school for seven male students aged sixteen to eighteen. Data was collected through multiple semistructured interviews with participants recruited through the various urban, suburban, and alternative high schools they attended at the time of this study.
Data was analyzed using a modification of the Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen method of analyzing phenomenological data (Moustakas, 1994). The theoretical framework undergirding this study is phenomenological research, arts-based research, and queer theory in education. Findings are represented as a literary novel in order to better preserve participants' voices.
Data analysis indicates that the experience of being out in high school is characterized by: (a) managing "the secret" of being gay before and during coming out; (b) seeing being gay as just being yourself; (c) perceiving the school as privately supportive, but publicly indifferent to gay students; (d) emotionally reflecting the school environment; (e) valuing relationships as a positive; (f) seeing harassment, gossip, and gender differences as negatives; (g) ascribing to perpetrators of homophobia and harassment character flaws and anachronistic beliefs; (h) being left on your own to deal with homophobia and harassment as others abdicate their responsibilities; (i) employing escapist, self-protection, and resistance strategies to deal with homophobia and harassment; (j) searching for connectivity to other gays and the LGBT community; (k) facing the silence of information and resources in schools on LGBT issues and people; and (l) advising others to be true to themselves.
This research has implications for teachers, administrators, policy-makers, and those involved in teacher education programmes who are interested in addressing the needs of gay students.

Abstract:
The clinical results of thromboembolism (TE) in Patients with prosthetic valVe endocarditis (PVE) and anticoagulant therapy were studied. 22 PVE patients (ll males and females each from 4 to 59 years old, average 32.7) were selected from 1939 patients who had undergone valve replacement at this hospital from 1964 and 1985. The complication frequency of TE and its clinical results, anticoagulant therapy and coagulation tests were investigated. Diagnostic criterion was determined in either of the following two: l) those patients who experienced valve replacement, with at least gradual pyrogenic symptons and inflammation factors such as a large increase in white blood cells, the progress of ESR and positive CRP, also with the same bacterium found more than twice in blood culture, also with the same bacterium found more than twice in blood culture, or 2) those patients who experienced valve replacement, with bacterial verruca found at re-valve replacement or at pathological anatomy. PVE onset took 2 days to 6.5 years (average 407 days) to appear after valve replacement. 8 out of the 22 PVE patients (36.3%) showed complications at TE onset, and 5 out of the 8 patients repeated. Embolism was found in 6 cases of brain, 4 cases of kidney, 2 cases of lung, 2 cases of limbs and 1 case of spleen, and 8 patients all died. On the other hand, 5 complications (22.7%) at bleeding were found in 3 cases of brain, 1 case of duodenum and 1 case of site of replaced aortic valve, and 4 patients died. Anticoagulant therapy was given to 21 out of the 22 PVE patients, and thrombotest (TT) values at TE onset were all less than 30%. Warfarin was administered as anticoagulant. 2 patients were administered with aspirin, but one was given with 250mg aspirin per day together with warfarin, and the other with 330mg aspirin per day alone. TT values at the onset of bleeding were from 10 to 56%. Anticoagulant therapy had been performed to the PVE patients since PVE onset did not yet appear, but complications coagulability by TT values, and all the patients died. In addition to this, complications at bleeding were found many and most of patients died even when the TT values were not so low. Therefore, we believe that the anticoagulant therapy that had been performed after PVE onset still needs further studies.
