From August 1989 to may 1993, extensive studies on the epidemiology of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in the Northern Territory were conducted by means of community-based surveys, morbidity and mortality data review and mathematical modelling. The incidence of clinically apparent acute HBV infection in the Top End was 12 per 100,000 per annum, with a marked ethnic difference between Aborigines (42 per 100,000) and non—Aborigines (4 per 100,000), and an odds ratio of 10.4 (95% confidence intervals 3.2-33.8). Detailed facies analysis and sequence stratigraphic principles applied to outcrop and subsurface data have aided in the development of a reservoir geological model for the Pacoota P3B Unit at the Mereenie Field, Central Australia. This thesis examines recent Aboriginal land tenure reform in the Northern Territory of Australia. The Commonwealth and Northern Territory governments have introduced three reforms since 2006: Township Leases, 5-year Intervention Leases and 40-year Housing Leases. Each of the reforms provides for the grant of a “head-lease” on land owned under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 (Cth) to a government entity, which then has the power to issue sub-leases to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal persons. Water level, aquifer test, and slug-test data indicate that the Koongarra uranium deposit is within a low permeability, semi-confined, fractured-schist aquifer. Water levels demonstrate semi-diurnal and diurnal fluctuations related to earth tides and evapotranspiration stresses. The Koongarra uranium deposit is hosted by quartz-chlorite schists. A conceptual model for the hydrogeology of the deposit is proposed on the basis of lithologic criteria and limited hydraulic testing. Water-level and aquifer-test data are presented that indicate the deposit lies within a partially confined, heterogeneous, anisotropic fractured-rock aquifer. The aquifer is dynamic with annual, diurnal, and semidiurnal water-level fluctuations. The results of aquifer tests indicate a high degree of connectivity in the aquifer. The Upper Roper River is one of the Australia’s unique tropical rivers which have been largely untouched by development. The Upper Roper River catchment comprises the sub-catchments of the Waterhouse River and Roper Creek, the two tributaries of the Roper River. In the year 1983/84, the Commonwealth Government decided to redevelop a RAAF airstrip at Tindal into a northern air base in NT. It would replace RAAF Base Darwin that was situated close to the coast and susceptible to both cyclonic weather and any 'enemy' sneak raid attacks.
