Abstract:
The majority of dogs with chronic idiopathic gastrointestinal (GI) disease respond to diet. So far, no study has assessed how much dietary information is obtained during consultations. We retrospectively evaluated what dietary information was available from dogs presenting to our Gastroenterology (GE), and Internal Medicine (IM) Service between 10/2017 and 01/2020. Data from 243 dogs presenting for first GE consultations were compared to 239 dogs presenting with chronic GI signs for first IM consultations. Referrals comprised 131 (54%) GE dogs and 112 (47%) IM dogs. Referral documents specified the previously fed diet in 53/131 (40%) GE and 14/112 (13%) IM dogs. No dog had received more than one previous diet trial for chronic GI signs. Irrespective of referral status, diet trials had been performed in 127/199 (64%) GE, and 56/156 (36%) IM dogs. The specific diet fed at the time of consultation could only be named by 106/199 (53%) GE and 40/156 (26%) IM dog owners. Data on response to subsequent newly prescribed diets were available from 86 GE dogs and 88 IM dogs. A positive response to diet was noted in 50/86 (58%) GE and 26/88 (30%) IM dogs. A further 23/35 (66%) GE dogs and 12/21 (57%) IM dogs responded positively to a second diet trial, and 4/9 GE dogs (44%) and 6/7 (86%) IM dogs responded positively to a third diet trial. In conclusion, overall dietary information gained from referring veterinarians and owners was often incomplete. More dietary information could be gained during GE consultations compared to IM consultations for chronic GI signs. A positive response to diet can still be seen after two diet failures. Further studies will help to ascertain if the percentage of diet-responsive GI disease increases when more complete dietary information is obtained at the time of consultations.

Full text
Abstract:
Microsurgical breast reconstruction demands the highest level of expertise in both reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery. Implementation of such a complex surgical procedure is generally associated with a learning curve defined by higher complication rates at the beginning. The aim of this study was to present an approach for teaching deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEP) and transverse upper gracilis (TUG) flap breast reconstruction, which can diminish complications and provide satisfying outcomes from the beginning. DIEP and TUG flap procedures for breast reconstruction were either performed by a senior surgeon (>200 DIEP/TUG, ”no-training group”), or taught to one of five trainees (>80 breast surgeries; >50 free flaps) in a step-wise approach. The latter were either performed by the senior surgeon, and a trainee was assisting the surgery (“passive training”); by the trainee, and a senior surgeon was supervising (“active training”); or by the trainee without a senior surgeon (“after training”). Surgeries of each group were analyzed regarding OR-time, complications, and refinement procedures. A total of 95 DIEP and 93 TUG flaps were included into this study. Before the first DIEP/TUG flap without supervision, each trainee underwent a mean of 6.8 DIEP and 7.3 TUG training surgeries (p > 0.05). Outcome measures did not reveal any statistically significant differences (passive training/active training/after training/no-training: OR-time (min): DIEP: 331/351/338/304 (p > 0.05); TUG: 229/214/239/217 (p > 0.05); complications (n): DIEP: 6/13/16/11 (p > 0.05); TUG: 6/19/23/11 (p > 0.05); refinement procedures (n): DIEP:71/63/49/44 (p > 0.05); TUG: 65/41/36/56 (p > 0.05)), indicating safe and secure implementation of this step-wise training approach for microsurgical breast reconstruction in both aesthetic and reconstructive measures. Of note, despite being a perforator flap, DIEP flap required no more training than TUG flap, highlighting the importance of flap inset at the recipient site.

Abstract:
Cutaneous food allergy is an adverse immunological response, triggered by antigenic dietary components that may escape the digestion process and are absorbed intact through the gastrointestinal mucosa. In Brazil, there are only a few reports on cutaneous food allergy and antigenicity of food components used in pet food production. Thus, the aim of this report was to assess and describe data from medical records of canine patients diagnosed with cutaneous food allergy at a Veterinary Teaching Hospital from Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil, in order to evaluate epidemiological and clinical aspects related to this skin problem. From 2007 to 2012, 29 dogs received the diagnosis of cutaneous food allergy after an eight-week hypoallergenic elimination trial. Among them, purebred dogs were more frequent, as well as females, and their mean age was 50.4 months old. Pruritus was reported in all cases, especially in interdigital areas. In order to establish the diagnosis, most patients received home-cooked elimination diet, based on potato and lamb in approximately 80% of the cases. Besides, it was highlighted the importance of the hypoallergenic elimination diet being rigorously followed by dogs' owners, aiming the adequate control of the clinical signs related to cutaneous food allergy.

Abstract:
The interdisciplinary nature of the content of the discipline «Foreign Language» has ample opportunities to create a socio-cultural educational space. The use of socio-cultural approach in language education allows in a new, deeper and more meaningful way to reveal all the components of the concept of the level of functional socio-cultural literacy. In modern concepts of learning a foreign language is seen as a reflection of the culture of the people, mastering a foreign culture and the acquisition of spiritual values. This task is set by linguistics, which investigates the selection and methods of providing students with information about the country whose language is being studied, in order to ensure their practical knowledge of the language. Linguistics is an aspect of the methodology of teaching foreign languages that reflects the national and cultural component of the language material. After all, without instilling in students the norms of adequate language behavior in isolation from knowledge, it is impossible to prepare them for foreign language communication and to form communicative ability. It follows that the development of the linguistic aspect in the teaching of a foreign language is extremely relevant and important. Every national culture consists of national and international elements and cannot fully correspond to another culture. Therefore, while learning a foreign language, we are forced to spend time developing students’ ideas about new subjects and phenomena. Thus, we are talking about the inclusion of elements of country studies in language teaching, but this is the inclusion of a slightly different kind compared to general country studies. Since we are talking about the connection in the educational process of language and information in the field of national culture, this type of teaching is called linguistics teaching.

Abstract:
Background: Non-communicable diseases are chronic diseases with long duration resulting from a combination of many factors like genetic, physiological, environmental, and lifestyle. Factors like poor diet, lack of exercise, tobacco, drugs, alcohol, family, and environment are risk factors for non-communicable diseases.Non-communicable diseases have huge economic consequences due to health care costs and lost economic productivity. Non-communicable diseases are responsible for 63% of the total death. Modifiable risk factors due to lifestyle can be controlled or reduced by intervention like lack of exercise, smoking, alcohol, unbalanced diet while non-modifiable risk factors cannot be reduced or controlled like age, gender, genetics. Improper maternal nutrition in utero and during the first year of life is associated with the risk of non-communicable diseases in adulthood. Obesity is now a public health problem because of strong association with hypertension, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke. Objective: To determine non -communicable diseases among patients attending a nutrition clinic in Baquba Teaching Hospital and to assess the diseases in relation to age, gender, residency, occupation, and educational level. Blocher, Lisa M. "An educational program approach to weight loss in the abdominally obese emphasizing low dietary fat intake." Virtual Press, 1993. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/865940.

Full text
Abstract:
The composition of the diet has been recently researched as an important factor in controlling excess body fat, and thus obesity. Along with dietary modifications, it has been stressed to incorporate behavior modification and daily physical activity to promote weight loss. A comprehensive program incorporating all three components is the suggested treatment for long term weight maintenance. This study investigated a 12 week low dietary fat education program including behavior modification and physical activity to promote weight loss in the abdominally obese. There were eight experimental subjects and four controls. Measurements assessed were height, weight, percent body fat, body mass index, waist/hip ratio, ideal body weight, daily caloric intake, percent dietary fat intake, percent saturated fat intake, saturated fat gram intake, physical activity assessments and resting metabolic rate. Results showed significant differences between the experimental and control groups for calorie intake, body weight, ideal body weight and saturated fat gram intake at post-intervention. Percent of dietary fat intake decreased from baseline to follow-up in the experimental group, but did not reach significance. There was a 33% decrease in saturated fat gram intake from baseline to follow-up in the experimental group. A significant decrease in daily caloric intake occurred in the experimental group from baseline to post-intervention. The decrease in body weight could not be directly correlated to dietary fat intake, although they did have a tendency to move in the same direction. These data suggest the weight management program in this study was successful at decreasing body weight, daily caloric intake, dietary fat intake and saturated fat intake. The qualitative interview revealed obstacles faced by the subjects. The most common difficulties in adhering to the program included time constraints, travel, lack of a structured physical activity component, social pressures triggering eating behavior, feeling of guilt when prioritizing time for oneself and lack of continued support and education through class sessions. Individual motivational factors existed. Therefore, personalized attention and a continued support system would be beneficial as part of the treatment program for success in changing lifestyle behaviors. In conclusion, this data suggest an educational program encouraging decreased dietary fat intake, behavior modification and increased daily physical activity without a calorie controlled plan can promote weight management in the abdominally obese.
Institute for Wellness

Abstract:
Educational Administration
Ed.D.
This quantitative study examined the impact, if any, of two general co-teaching models on the academic achievement of all of the fourth-grade students in a small suburban elementary school district. It addressed co-teaching methods as possible supports to improve literacy gains for all elementary school students. The researcher investigated the effectiveness of two general co-teaching models, each of which employed some form of parallel or supportive teaching strategies. These interventions were measured by the Measurement of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which are state-aligned, computerized, adaptive tests that reflect the achievement level of each student and measure growth over time. Fourth grade students were tested in the Fall 2008, then tested again, in Spring 2009. Their academic growth in literacy was evaluated via repeated measures analysis of variance. The data were disaggregated by gender, race, socio-economic status, and ability level. Comparisons were made as to the effectiveness of the co-teaching models, and, if evident, which interventions were most effective based on the disaggregated data.
Temple University--Theses

Gradin, Matilda, and Nora Emanuelsson. ""Vem tar hand om barnen i ditt hemland?" : - Hur normer och värderingar framställs och förmedlas på språkintroduktion för nyanlända elever." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för pedagogik, didaktik och utbildningsstudier, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-375450.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to gain knowledge about how norms and values are conveyed and presented in teaching of immigrant students. The previous research on the subject has increased in recent years and is mostly concentrated on a segregation problem. An ideological analysis examines how equality, gender and gender norms are produced and conveyed in teaching materials as well as within teaching in general. In order to collect data, a qualitative method was conducted through text analysis of the textbook Mål 2-lärobok, as well as semi-structured interviews with four teachers at introductory programs. Based on the teaching, assumptions about immigrant students values that contrast with the established Swedish values are made visible. The data was then interpreted based on Jörgen Mattler's concept of ideology and hegemony. Hegemony is about the reproduction and maintenance of the prevailing social order through subordinate social group joining the values of the dominant social group, which becomes common sense. The ideological parameters essentialism, which emphasizes biological differences as natural, is opposed to constructivism, which emphasizes that phenomena are socially constructed. The result shows that among immigrant students education there are contrapositions between how gender and equality are conveyed and produced. Both in Mål 2 and within teaching in general there is a clash between an essentialistic ideological basis on the one hand and a constructivist basis on the other. Hegemonic values regarding Swedish society as the norm are presented and conveyed as superiors in teaching through assumptions about the target group's values. This can be seen through various ways of conveying and producing gender equality, gender and gender patterns based on topics such as family, parental leave, professions and relationships, etc.

Wright, Karen Faye. "Teaching Heart Failure Patients a Low-Sodium Diet." ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/6155.

Full text
Abstract:
Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a progressive medical condition affecting more than 7 million people in the United States (US) with 700,000 new cases reported annually. More than half of those treated for CHF are readmitted at least once a year. The problem addressed by this quality improvement initiative was lack of adherence to low sodium diet (LSD) among CHF patients, knowledge and skill deficit, and excessive 30-day CHF readmissions. The health belief model and the self-care deficit theory guide nurses in acquiring the skills needed to teach LSD. Twelve months of data were selected from 93 CHF readmissions from a target population of 499 CHF admissions. Measures of central tendency were used to extract meaningful summaries between variables for patterns related to 30-day readmissions and to plan educational interventions to improve patient outcomes. The educational intervention focused on educating nurses to teach adult patients with CHF to adopt a LSD. Discharge teaching materials developed were standardized, customizable, evidence-based, and included opportunities for evaluation of patient understanding and reteaching as necessary. Analysis of variance was conducted to evaluate the difference between days to readmission and compliance with the patient education process, and no significant difference (p < .05) was found (F(3,89) = .314, p = .815). The implications of this project for social change include preparing nurses to teach patients to adopt a LSD, empowering CHF patients to improve health outcomes, and improving the financial outcomes related to CHF.

Abstract:
Thirty females, 55 to 70 years old, participated in an investigation comparing two methods of teaching the diabetic diet. Subjects were required to take the WRAT-R, a test which assessed their reading capabilities. Only those scoring at the seventh grade level or below qualified for this investigation. Following the test, subjects were assigned to one of two groups. Participants in Group 1 received one-on-one instructions of Healthy Food Choices, whereas participants in Group 2 received videotaped instructions of Healthy Food Choices. Healthy Food Choices is a more simplified meal planning tool designed for those that cannot understand the concepts of the Exchange Lists for Meal Planning. Participants were instructed by the researcher, either on videotape or one-on-one. A follow-up visit occurred in a mean of 10.3 days to assess comprehension of the instructions provided. Each participant was contacted again by telephone in a mean of 28.7 days from the follow-up visit to assess long-term retention of the instructions they were provided. The sample menu collected from the two contacts provided data on choice deletions and additions. These data were analyzed by t-tests. There were no statistically significant differences found between diabetic diet instructions done by videotape or one-on-one at either follow-up visit or telephone contact. In this sample, videotaped instructions of the diabetic diet were just as effective as one-on-one instructions.
Master of Science

Cardinal, Dal Sandra. "Konsten att öva! : En kvantitativ forskningsstudie om i vilken utsträckning musikstuderande får möjlighet att lära sig att öva inom ramen för sång- och instrumentalundervisningen." Thesis, Karlstads universitet, Institutionen för konstnärliga studier (from 2013), 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-82738.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the present quantitative study has been to investigate the extent to which stu- dents feel that they can practice in a manner that is structured and effective. Additionally, the purpose was to examine whether song and instrumental teachers, within their regular teaching, also teach their students how to practice. The intention was furthermore to find out whether there are any connections or variations among the respondents linked to any of the background factors: gender, instrument, genre or school form. Based on positivism and objectivism as the- ories of science and knowledge, questionnaires were chosen as research method, in which one questionnaire was designed for students and one for teachers. The questionnaires were then distributed to upper secondary schools, folk high schools and music colleges around Sweden. The result shows that the teachers' answers and the students' answers differ markedly, where the teachers, to a greater extent, indicate that they assist their students with practice methods and guidance. Previous research indicates that teachers tend to think that they teach their stu- dents to practice to a greater extent than they actually do, which is something that is discussed in relation to the results of the present study. Furthermore, the results show that genre can be the most decisive factor for the extent to which students are given the opportunity to learn to practice within their lesson. Students in the classical genre indicate to a much greater extent that they receive guidance in their practice compared to students in the jazz/pop/rock genre. The result also shows that the majority of the students wants more support and guidance in their practice. Therefore, a final discussion is held about the aspect of teaching students how to prac- tice and whether this aspect maybe need to be clarified in syllabuses and steering documents.

Abstract:
This study analyzes the perceptions of a group of students on teaching strategies in a biostatistics course, assisted by ICT, during the pandemic. Ten PhD students in Public Health from a public university in Medellín-Colombia participated. Several strategies were implemented, including reading reports, critical reading, and analysis of real cases. The sources of information were dialogs with the students and an evaluation about the teaching strategies of the course. Students reported a positive perception of teaching strategies, which allowed them to be more active in their learning. The strategies implemented in the course contributed to positively transform the perception of students about biostatistics.

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: The increased production of processed food, rapid urbanization, and changing lifestyles have led to a shift in dietary patterns so people are now consuming more unhealthy foods. To change unhealthy dietary patterns, there is a need to educate the individuals to keep a balanced diet that is rich in nutritional requirements. One way to educate a heterogeneous population, from preschool to adults, is by learning through games. Background: In recent years, the use of games as a pedagogical method is gaining momen-tum. Game-based learning (GBL) refers to any learning environments or activities that use games to support learning and teaching. GBL enables learners to practice skills that traditional teaching may not offer and promote more efficient learning. GBL includes various types of games; one of them is escape games (EG), which have become a popular trend in the world. Because EG are a relatively new phenomenon, the research on their development and educational value is still in its initial stages. Methodology: The current study is set to develop a methodology for ‘educational EG’ and to examine its role in promoting knowledge, awareness, and motivation toward a healthy nutrition. The study’s theoretical framework is guided by the situated learning theory, as EG are situated in a unique setting that instigates interactions between the players and between them and the learning environment. The research questions are 1. What is the educational potential of escape games? 2. Whether and how can EG promote knowledge, awareness, and motivation toward a healthy nutrition? 3. What are the predicting factors of knowledge, awareness, and motivation toward a healthy nutrition, in the context of educational EG? Contribution: The research’s contributions are in three levels: In the theoretical level, the study contributes a layer of knowledge on situated learning environments, offering a new model for the development and implementation of educational EG. In the methodological level, the study presents valid and reliable research tools for examining the effectiveness of educational EG. In the practical level, the study provides a tangible EG kit on healthy nutrition. Findings: Initial findings indicated on an overall increase in the participants’ positive views about EG as a situated learning environment. The findings also indicated that participation in an EG has a potential to promote knowledge and awareness of nutrition-related issues. The players’ motivation to learn about nutrition increased after participating in the game, mainly due to an increase in their sense of self-efficacy.
