Naccarati, Chiara. "Dietary modulation of uptake transporters." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/8042/.

Full text
Abstract:
Transporters play a determinant role in creating and maintaining physiological balance within the cells. Though, not much information exists on the modulation of transporters, especially in terms of polyphenols and other dietary components. Initially, a comprehensive database was created, using the high-performance search engine Genevestigator. The database summarises the existing knowledge on selected transporters (OAT1, OAT3, OATP1A2, OATP1B1, OATP1B3, OATP4C1, MRP2, MRP3, BCRP, MCT1, MCT7 and SMCT1). The anatomical distribution of the latters was investigated in the human heart, kidney, liv

Jones, Glenys A. "Imidazole dipeptides : dietary sources and factors affecting uptake and muscle content." Thesis, University of Chichester, 2011. http://eprints.chi.ac.uk/807/.

Full text
Abstract:
The imidazole dipeptides (ImD); anserine (Ans), carnosine (Cam) and balenine, have been shown to be effective at functioning as H+ ion buffers, with Carn being particularly effective within the physiological pH range. Therefore ImD have been reported to be beneficial to athletes exercising at high intensities, where the activity results in the production and accumulation of H+ ions within skeletal muscle. It has also been hypothesised that these compounds may also be beneficial in reducing the morbidities related to ageing, such as Alzheimer's disease. Humans store ImD in the form of Carn and

Davidson, Melissa Anne. "Fate and developmental effects of dietary uptake of methylmercury in Xenopus tropicalis tadpoles." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/27676.

Full text
Abstract:
To investigate the effects of methylmercury (MeHg) on development, Xenopus tropicalis tadpoles were exposed to MeHg diets with concentrations of 0.42 (control), 44 (low), and 270 (high) ng/g wet weight. Increased mortality, decreased metamorphosis, increased size, and a greater number of days between tadpoles reaching metamorphosis were observed in the high MeHg group, suggesting disruption to the thyroid axis. Triiodothyronine levels, however, were not significantly different between groups. In both the control and low MeHg groups, total Hg and MeHg body burdens increased rapidly, reached a

Leeming, Daniel James. "The bioavailability and assimilation of dietary zinc in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/3054.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines three possible methods for improving the digestibility and bioavailability of zinc to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mikiss). The first method was to examine the availability of the zinc utilisation from commonly used protein sources; the second was to assess the efficacy of the upstream use of an enzyme treatment of the raw materials; the third was to assess the use of organically complexed mineral supplements as opposed to the inorganic salts widely used at present. The first section indicated that the zinc from the soyabean meal was the most available (49.4%). The zinc dige

Abstract:
Background: Type 2 diabetes is characterised by chronic hyperglycaemia, insulin resistance and associated mitochondrial dysfunction. (Poly)phenols have been shown to attenuate cellular oxidative stress and restore glucose homeostasis, but the specific mechanisms and compounds responsible remain unknown. Methods: HepG2 cells were used as an in vitro hepatic model, on which the effects of quercetin on high glucose-induced oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction were investigated. Full text
Abstract:
Breast cancer survival rates have risen dramatically over recent years with many women expected to survive their diagnosis and live long and fruitful lives. As a result ‘cancer survivorship’ has become of interest to health care providers who state that future services must be developed that better meet the long term health needs and expectations of this group. To this end, the role of health behaviour change in the secondary prevention of breast cancer is a popular area of research. To date, however, there are no published investigations into what the likely uptake in health promotion activit

Abstract:
The use of nanomaterials (NMs) in orally ingestible products raises concerns about potential hazards. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles (of which some are incidentally produced at the nanoscale) are used in cosmetics, biological remediation (photo-catalysis), toothpastes, ingestible pharmaceuticals and food products. The increased surface area to mass ratio of nanoparticles (NPs) potentially makes them more biologically reactive than their coarser (bulk) material counterparts. There is limited data available on the uptake kinetics across the mammalian gastrointestinal tract, and the potential
