Abstract:
Today, feed represents more than 70% of the production cost in growing-finishing pig industry and in the current economic context, it is important to reduce it. The feeding system currently used uses phases and is expressed as a linear model. The feeding system using feeds introduced more recently is represented by a bilinear model. We introduced here new feeding system which is a combination offeeding systems using phases and feeds: the hybrid method. We show that it can reduce the feed cost by more than 5%. The main part of this manuscript is about global optimization of the bilinear problem, and non convex, problem modeling feeding system using feeds. The objective function and some constraints are bilinear. This problem can have several local minima but we would like to have a global one. It is equivalent to a pooling problem and we prove that it is a strongly NP-hard problem. After a study of first results, we enounce the conjecture that any local minimum is a global minimum for that problem applied in the pig industry. We prove it for a small size example. Our problem cannot be solved by using global solver due to its size, then we applied some relaxation methods such as penalization of bilinear terms, their discretization and Langrangian and convex relaxations. All these approaches support our conjecture. Then we study the robustness of the models on the ingredient price variations and a multicriteria study reducing phosphorus and nitrogen excretion

Abstract:
Diet is considered one of the most influential factors on primates spatial patterns. Many studies that have addressed this relationship present methodological similarities, but there is no common standard methodology. In order to better understand the relationship between diet and spatial patterns of primates we need to investigate the effect of some methodological problems. In thisstudy we describe four of these problems: the problem of the discontinuous data, that is, the effect of autocorrelation when observations are distributed unevenly over time; the filtering problem, that describes the difficulties to isolate the effect of the independent variable, in this case, the diet; the partialness problem, that calls our attention to the risk of making large scale conclusions based on small scale data; and the problem of fenced linearity, that discusses the validity of area estimations, when time sampling is too small. We developed a methodology to control these problems and tested it on the data collected for one group of Sapajus nigritus in Carlos Botelhos State Park, São Paulo (Brazil), during two periods, 2007-2008 and 2009-2010. We also used a more conventional methodology to compare results. Although the results obtained using both methodologies were similar, in some cases, the new one performed better. Diet was analyzed byusing the categories patchy and dispersed food items. This dichotomous classification has been criticized because of the broadness of its categories, but in the present study it was sensitive to changes in Sapajus spatial patterns. Results were inconclusive when analyzing data from large discontinuous periods, but some conclusions were obtained when considering data from short continuous periods: daily path length decreased and the use of space was more uniform with the increase of dispersed items on the diet. The largest ranging areas were observed when the diet was mixed. Spatial patterns of these primates can be explained in terms of energy obtained and travel costs

Hamilton, Daniel. "Decomposition and diet problems." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/3798.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to efficiently solve real life problems. We study LPs. We study an NLP and an MINLP based on what is known as the generalised pooling problem (GPP), and we study an MIP that we call the cattle mating problem. These problems are often very large or otherwise difficult to solve by direct methods, and are best solved by decomposition methods. During the thesis we introduce algorithms that exploit the structure of the problems to decompose them. We are able to solve row-linked, column-linked and general LPs efficiently by modifying the tableau simplex method, and suggest how this work could be applied to the revised simplex method. We modify an existing sequential linear programming solver that is currently used by Format International to solve GPPs, and show the modified solver takes less time and is at least as likely to find the global minimum as the old solver. We solve multifactory versions of the GPP by augmented Lagrangian decomposition, and show this is more efficient than solving the problems directly. We introduce a decomposition algorithm to solve a MINLP version of the GPP by decomposing it into NLP and ILP subproblems. This is able to solve large problems that could not be solved directly. We introduce an efficient decomposition algorithm to solve the MIP cattle mating problem, which has been adopted for use by the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation. Most of the solve methods we introduce are designed only to find local minima. However, for the multifactory version of the GPP we introduce two methods that give a good chance of finding the global minimum, both of which succeed in finding the global minimum on test problems.

Malmros, Ingegärd Enander. "Optimal Foraging Theory - OFT : Background, Problems and Possibilities."

Full text
Abstract:
Optimal Foraging Theory (OFT) has its origin in processualistic ideas in 1960s with traces back to the dawn of the archaeological science in the 19th century. The OFT model is based on the construction of an individual’s food item selection understood as an evolutionary construct that maximizes the net energy gained per unit feeding time. The most common variants are diet patch choice, diet breadth/prey choice models and Marginal Value Theorem (MVT). The theory introduced experimental studies combined with mathematically data analyses and computer simulations. The results visualized in the experimental diagrammed curve are possible to compare with the archaeological records. What is “optimal” is an empirical question not possible to know but still useful as a benchmark for measuring culture. The theory is common in USA but still not in Europe. OFT seems to be useful in hunter-gatherer research looking at human decisions, energy flow, depression of resources and extinction. This literature review concludes that the prey-choice/diet-breadth model seems to be useful for hunter-gatherer research on Gotland focusing on possible causes of the hiatus in archaeological records between 5000-4500 BC.

The effects of nutrition in ovo with vitamin D3 and hydro diet containing sodium alendronate on bone development and performance parameters were evaluated on this study. The experiment consisted in two stages (hatching and growing). The incubation period and the experimental design was completely randomized with five treatments (not injected eggs; injected only with olive oil; 1.2μg; 2.4 μg and 3.6 μg of vitamin D3 / 100 μL of olive oil) injection of vitamin D3 in 600 fertile eggs of matrices broilers, favoring a challenge to the next stage, ie, a lower bone promoting embryonic development, generating a challenge for the growing phase to test the levels of AS. The stage of growing design was completely randomized in a factorial 2 x 5 (vitamin D3 during the incubation period and different concentrations of AS in the growing period). The vitamin D3 nutrition in egg hatchability did not affect (P> 0.05), however, negatively affected the bone densitometry post-hatch chicks, as the sodium alendronate showed no significant data (P> 0.05) for bone development parameters. However, it is concluded that further studies are necessary to determine the levels of this drug in order to improve the bone condition of broilers.

Abstract:
Name: Life of coeliac and his family in these days Aim: The aim of my diploma thesis is to map life difficulties of people with celiac disease. First of all, it is a problem with gluten-free diet which is essential for celiac disease. Problems with eating out, shopping for ingredients for meal preparation at home, expensiveness of this eating, and last but not least, support from insurance companies and the state. Methods: The theoretical part includes findings about celiac disease as an illness, it means the characteristics of its origin, diagnostics and treatment. Furthermore, findings about gluten- free diet and problems related to this kind of eating were worked. Last but not least, diet and availability of food for gluten-free eating are mentioned. I applied a survey method in the practical part, in which case an anonymous survey was created electronically by using Google forms, and then sent out via internet. The survey was filled out by 296 respondents. Outcome: We can see from the outcomes that most of the respondents sometimes break the diet due to social integration. Furthermore, we observed the frequency of eating in restaurant services, in which case most of the people sometimes visit, it means less than once a week. The reason of sporadic or even no visit to restaurants is bad...

Abstract:
This dissertation deals with a current troubles in the sphere of a school eating in a whole czech republic. Using a questinare survey were charted troubles of the school eating and defined the most important ones that can become a risk for this world unique specialization. A vast describe of a situation in the sphere of school eating in czech republic revealed many problems that workers are dealing with. They are finding optimal solutions as well. The questionaire survey revealed which problems can be solved in practice and those who can not be solved itself. Those wo can not be solved needs chane of sysem controlled by state authorities. A a biggest problem that questinare survey and additional ivestgation prooved high age of workers in school eatin and absence of young workers who would gain experiences and replace the outgoing workers. Results of the research showed the cause of the problem is inadequate finacial evaluation and low social prestige of this profesion. In this area of work is missing a positive motivation for gaining new workers. This is the reason why this area of work is dealin with a lack of quallified workers that are needed to ensure a service in the scool eating system service.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with nutrition of preschool children. It concentrates on the issue of eating in nursery schools. The theoretical part contains characteristics of a preschool child development and information on the basic components of nutrition and its importance to the human body. I mentioned the influence of dietary habits on the healthy development of the child population and analysed the negative factors that could adversely affect this development. The practical part includes directed interviews with staff of kindergartens in district Prachatice and comparison between current diets and diets before 1989 in these institutions. The intention was to find differences between these diets. With the change in the political system new possibilities opened up. School canteens can experiment with new recipes, diets include new healthy foods.

"The acne problem amongst the youth in Hong Kong and its dietary relationship from a traditional Chinese medicine perspective." Thesis, 2010. http://library.cuhk.edu.hk/record=b6074867.

Full text
Abstract:
Acne is prevalent amongst youth in Hong Kong and has considerable psychological effects. The application of a TCM approach led to the detection of significant associations between diet and the occurence of acne. TCM-syndrome-tailored dietary manipulation was effective in reducing the clinical severity of acne for patients with imbalance of chong-ren subtype. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
In (1), 1068 Chinese subjects were sampled from the general health evaluation and eight governmental secondary schools in Hong Kong were assessed for their clinical severity of acne. Over 93% of the subjects had a certain degree of acne and the prevalence of clinical acne was of 40.4% and coexisted with a high frequency of acne disability. Assessment of the clinical severity of acne did not correlate strongly with the effect on QOL (gammas= 0.445, P < 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression showed that female gender (P = 0.002), higher GAGS score (P < 0.001), higher perceived stress (P = 0.01) and willingness to pay Hong Kong $15,000 for a hypothetical permanent cure (P = 0.03) were positive predictors for acne disability.
In (2), 322 university entrants completed a dietary questionnaire capturing 11 categories of food intake and were examined for body constitutions of yin-predominance or yang-predominance with a published TCM diagnostic assessment procedure/method. There were 155 (48.1%) participants in the yin-predominant group and 167 (51.9%) in the yang-predominant group. No association of diet and acne was found when the participants were considered as a whole group. In yin-predominant group, intake of foods from street stalls (P = 0.04) was significantly associated with a lower likelihood of acne occurence. In yang-PG, the intake of desserts (P = 0.04) and fresh fruit juices (P = 0.02) was significantly associated with a higher likelihood of acne occurence, whereas the intake of dairy and soy products (P = 0.04) was significantly associated with a lower likelihood of acne occurence.
In (3), 233 students with clinical acne as assessed by GAGS were diagnosed for his or her TCM syndrome subtype, namely wind-heat subtype, damp-heat subtype, stagnant blood or phlegm subtype, and imbalance of chong-ren subtype. They were then randomly assigned to either intervention group (IG) or control group (CG). There were respectively 60 students belonged to each of the wind-heat, damp-heat, and stagnant blood or phelgm subtypes, and 53 students belonged to imbalanced of chong-ren subtype. With the use of a computer generated randomisation list using blocks of six, 30 (50%) students were assigned to either IG or CG for wind-heat, damp-heat, and stagnant blood or phelgm subtypes accordingly, whilst 26 (49%) and 27 (51%) students were assigned to either IG or CG for imbalance of chongren subtype. TCM-syndrome-tailored diet advice plus standard medical advice were given to IG whilst standard medical advice alone was given to CG over 12-week study period. The primary analysis was to compare the percentage change of GAGS from baseline to 12 weeks between the groups using univariate analysis for each TCM syndrome, controlling for the variation in the dependent variables due to gender, age, BMI, schools, physical exercise, and female contraceptive use. Within the imbalance of chong-ren subtype, there was a significant reduction of acne severity in IG compared with that in CG (-11.8% vs 2.1%; p=0.046), after adjusting for gender, age, body mass index, schools, physical exercise, and female contraceptive use. In the other three subtypes, there were no significant differences of acne severity between IG and CG
This research was composed of three major parts: (1) a cross-sectional study investigating the prevalence of acne and the acne disability amongst adolescents and young adults from August 2006 to March 2008 in Hong Kong; (2) a cross sectional study investigate the diet-acne connection from a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) perspective performed amongst young adults in August 2006; and (3) a randomised controlled trial on the effectivenss of TCM-syndrome-tailored dietary advice for adolescents implemented between November 2007 and March 2008 in Hong Kong.

Van, der Merwe Annette. "A feasibility study of combining expert system technology and linear programming techniques in dietetics / Annette van der Merwe." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/13441.

Full text
Abstract:
Linear programming is widely used to solve various complex problems with many variables, subject to multiple constraints. Expert systems are created to provide expertise on complex problems through the application of inference procedures and advanced expert knowledge on facts relevant to the problem. The diet problem is well-known for its contribution to the development of linear programming. Over the years many variations and facets of the diet problem have been solved by means of linear programming techniques and expert systems respectively. In this study the feasibility of combining expert system technology and linear programming techniques to solve a diet problem topical to South Africa, is examined. A computer application is created that incorporates goal programming- and multi-objective linear programming models as the inference engine of an expert system. The program is successfully applied to test cases obtained through knowledge acquisition. The system delivers an eating-plan for an individual that conforms to the nutritional requirements of a healthy diet, includes the personal food preferences of that individual, and includes the food items that result in the lowest total cost. It further allows prioritization of the food preference and least cost factors through the use of weights. Based on the results, recommendations and contributions to the linear programming and expert system fields are presented.
