AbstractFor $r\geq 3$, $p\geq 2$, we classify all actions of the groups ${ \mathrm{Diff} }_{c}^{r} ( \mathbb{R} )$ and ${ \mathrm{Diff} }_{+ }^{r} ({S}^{1} )$ by ${C}^{p} $-diffeomorphisms on the line and on the circle. This is the same as describing all non-trivial group homomorphisms between groups of compactly supported diffeomorphisms on 1-manifolds. We show that all such actions have an elementary form, which we call topologically diagonal. As an application, we answer a question of Ghys in the 1-manifold case: if $M$ is any closed manifold, and ${\mathrm{Diff} }^{\infty } \hspace{-2.0pt}

We prove that every smooth diffeomorphism group valued cocycle over certain$\mathbb{Z}^{k}$Anosov actions on tori (and more generally on infranilmanifolds) is a smooth coboundary on a finite cover, if the cocycle is center bunched and trivial at a fixed point. For smooth cocycles which are not trivial at a fixed point, we have smooth reduction of cocycles to constant ones, when lifted to the universal cover. These results on cocycle trivialization apply, via the existing global rigidity results, to maximal Cartan$\mathbb{Z}^{k}$($k\geq 3$) actions by Anosov diffeomorphisms (with at least one t

We prove that the group of contact diffeomorphisms is closed in the group of all diffeomorphisms with respect to the C0-topology. By Gromov's alternative, it suffices to exhibit a diffeomorphism that cannot be approximated uniformly by contact diffeomorphisms. Our construction uses Eliashberg's shape invariant.

In this paper, we find that the asymptotic nonlinear Maslov index defined on the universal cover of the group of all contact Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of the standard (2n - 1)-dimensional contact sphere is a quasimorphism. Then we show our main result: Let M be standard (n - 1)-dimensional complex projective space. We prove that the value of the pullback of the asymptotic nonlinear Maslov index to the universal cover of the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of M, when evaluated on a diffeomorphism supported in a sufficiently small open subset of M, equals [Formula: see text] times the Cal

The conventional group of four-dimensional diffeomorphisms is not realizeable as a canonical transformation group in phase space. Yet there is a larger field-dependent symmetry transformation group which does faithfully reproduce 4-D diffeomorphism symmetries. Some properties of this group were first explored by Bergmann and Komar. More recently the group has been analyzed from the perspective of projectability under the Legendre map. Time translation is not a realizeable symmetry, and is therefore distinct from diffeomorphism-induced symmetries. This issue is explored further in this paper. I

AbstractWe study the group Diffr0(𝔸) of Cr-diffeomorphisms of the closed annulus that are isotopic to the identity. We show that, for r≠2,3, the linear space of homogeneous quasi-morphisms on the group Diffr0(𝔸) is one-dimensional. Therefore, the commutator length on this group is (stably) unbounded. In particular, this provides an example of a manifold whose diffeomorphism group is unbounded in the sense of Burago, Ivanov and Polterovich.

Morse-Smale isotopy classes are also shown to be the same as Nielsen's algebraically finite type.

We consider the set of all spacelike embeddings of the circle S1 into a spacetime R1 × S1 with a metric globally conformal to the Minkowski metric. We identify this set and the group of conformal isometries of this spacetime as quotients of semidirect products involving diffeomorphism groups and give a transitive action of the conformal group on the set of spacelike embeddings. We provide results showing that the group of conformal isometries is a topological group and that its action on the set of spacelike embeddings is continuous. Finally, we point out some directions for future research.

The large deformation matching (LDM) framework is a method for registration of images and other data structures, used in computational anatomy. We show how to reformulate the large deformation matching framework for registration in a geometric way. The general framework also allows to generalize the large deformation matching framework to include multiple scales by using the iterated semidirect product of groups. An important ingredient in the LDM framework is the choice of a suitable Riemannian metric on the space of diffeomorphisms. Since the space in question is infinite-dimensional, not ev
