Full textThe growing presence of women on the roads of Quebec is important and needs to be explored. Women's crash involvement is changing and the reasons associated must be highlighted in order to better target government road safety interventions. This analysis is an evolving portrait differentiated according to gender of the Quebec accidentology for two periods, 1990-1992 and 2007-2009. Data used in this study come from the Ministère des transports (MTQ) and the Société d'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ). The results present, mainly by the growth in the number of licence holders, an increase in the women’s presence in road safety records. Also, it reflects an overall decrease of the driver’s involvement in crash with injuries, this decrease being lower among women. Analysis of the relationship between sex and the accident characteristics and regression models demonstrate that sex remains a determinant in accidentology. Full textThe objective of this study was to evaluate the association between the use of the guideline-recommended drugs (GRD) following a first acute myocardial infarction (AMI), the deprivation index and the sex, in elderly people covered by public drug plan (PDP), in the province of Quebec. We conducted a population-based cohort study of Quebecers aged ≥ 66 years living in Quebec using the Quebec Integrated Chronic Disease Surveillance System (QICDSS) introduced by the Institut national de santé publique du Québec (INSPQ). Individuals having a first hospitalized AMI between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2011 and being covered by the PDP 6 months before and at least 30 days following this hospitalization were considered. People were deemed using the GRD if they received simultaneously drugs three classes (antiplatelet, beta-blocker and lipid-lowering) on the 30th and the 365th day after hospital discharge. On day 30 and 365 after hospital discharge, respectively 19,017 and 16,547 individuals were considered among which 13,234 (69.6%) and 10,772 (65.1%) were using GRD. No significant association was observed for individuals most materially and socially deprived compared to those least deprived. Women were 5% more likely inappropriate use of GRD only at 30 days. Our results suggest an equitable access to drugs for the elderly in the PDP that experienced a first AMI, which responds well to one of the objectives of setting up the Quebec PDP.

Full textThe built environment and transportation (eg. walking, cycling) influence person mobility and social interaction; especially for children aged (between 10 and 12 years) who are beginning to explore and to know their physical and social environment. However, there is little information about the relationship between transportation and children social interaction. Understanding better the potential links, this research has examined the relationship between each of the following variables: the built environment, active transport frequency and independent mobility with social interaction (face-to-face and virtual) among students who studied at primary schools in Quebec City. This study used data collected through a survey questionnaire administered in person and completed by respondents in class. The sample consists of n = 197 respondents from six schools that are located in three urban sectors of Quebec City: central, old suburbs and new suburbs. For reasons of analysis and comparisons of results, two schools per geographic region were considered. The chi-square test of independence and logistic regression (binomial model) were used to do statistical analysis on the self-reported frequency of social interaction and mode use. The results show that children living in the new suburb had more virtual social interaction after school as compared to children living in the central areas, but there is no link between the type of built environment and children’s face-to-face social interaction. Having social media frequency influences the likelihood of children's virtual social interaction. Active transport frequency is more associated with children’s face-to-face social interaction. The results show that children who regularly do active transport have more face-to-face social interaction compared to their peers who rarely travel by foot or bike. This research also confirms that walking or cycling frequencies are not related to virtual social interaction. Finally, having a high level of autonomy for children’s movements (based on the right to walk or cycle alone) influenced social interaction (face-to-face) compared the situation where children have a low level of freedom movement alone or with peers. Finally, the study confirms there is a link between child’s gender and face-to-face social interaction. For example, having face-to-face social interaction, boys get more than girls with the same age. However, our results suggest there is no link between virtual social interaction and child's gender.

Full textDans ce mémoire, nous utilisons un modèle linéaire en moyenne pour évaluer l’impact des pairs sur les performances scolaires. Notre modèle, exploite la variation dans la taille des groupes comme source d’identification. Des effets fixes sont introduits pour tenir compte de l’effet des caractéristiques inobservées. Le modèle est estimé par la méthode du maximum de vraisemblance. Pour réaliser les estimations, nous avons utilisé des données qui proviennent d’une base données du Ministère de l’Éducation du Loisir et du Sport de Québec. Cette base contenait des informations sur les notes, le niveau d’étude, l’âge, la langue parlée à la maison et le statut socio-économique des élèves ayant passé en Juin 2005, l’examen de fin de cycle du secondaire. Dans le cadre de cette étude, l’examen de l’impact des garçons sur les résultats des garçons, a mis en évidence des effets endogènes significatifs et positifs en mathématiques et en histoire. Cependant, l’impact des filles sur les performances des filles a quant à lui mis en évidence des effets endogènes significatifs et positifs en français, mathématiques et histoire. L’effet endogène intra-genre, obtenu dans le sous-groupe des garçons est de l’ordre 0,833 en mathématiques. Dans le sous-groupe des filles, nous avons trouvé un estimé de l’ordre de 0,57 dans la même matière.

Full textQuebec's population is aging. This aging causes many consequences such as growing rise in health spending. In addition, recent developments in the medical profession in Quebec are characterized by increasing feminization. These indicators are calling for reforms to improve the efficiency of health services. The study on general practitioners’ productivity through their careers can help inform policy on appropriate reforms. We have a panel data combining survey and administrative data on Quebec practitioner physicians. The maximum likelihood estimation shows that general practitioners’ productivity is based on their experiences, evolves approximately as a bell curve with a plateau between the slice’s ages of 35 and 65. Men are on average more productive than women with a difference ranging from 15 to 49%. Keywords: productivity, work experience, general practitioners.

Full textThis thesis examines the link between psychological well-being in adolescence and engagement in sexual contact with nonromantic partners. We call such contact “casual sexual relationships and experiences” (CSREs). Although this association between psychological well-being and CSREs has been studied among young adults, especially among university students, studies on adolescents are scarce. Based on a representative sample of Quebec 14- to 18-year-old high school students from the province of Quebec, this thesis, consisting of two articles, explores gender differences in this association. It also explores differences between two forms of CSREs: friends with benefits relationship (FWB) and one-nigh-stand (ONS). The first article examines five psychological well-being predictors (psychological distress, suicidal ideation, self-esteem, alcohol use, and drug use) of engagement in CSREs among sexually active adolescents (N = 2,601). The second article examines the impact of CSREs on the same five psychological well-being measures six months after the engagement while controlling for prior well-being (N = 2,304). For the first article, multinomial regressions were conducted. For the second article, path analysis and a logistic regression were conducted. The results show that suicidal ideation, alcohol use and drug use are associated with greater engagement in CSREs for girls. Alcohol use is associated with greater engagement in CSREs for boys. CSREs have a small impact (small effect size) on psychological well-being among girls: their psychological distress and use of alcohol and drugs increase six months after such engagement. There is no change in psychological well-being among boys. Avenues of research and interventions are discussed.

Full textDespite their best intentions, progressive groups contribute to the reproduction of social inequalities within their internal structure. Even in groups using pro-feminist practices intended to manage how speech is shared among participants, there sometimes are blatant inequalities in the voices being heard – or not – depending on gender and other socioeconomic factors. ASSÉ (Association for Solidarity among Student Unions) implements a number of measures to rebalance how speech and power are being shared, including alternating speaking rights between men and women, using a “moodwatcher” during meetings, allowing for non-mixed caucuses, and holding Women’s congresses. I have conducted twelve semi-structured interviews with people who are or have been involved in ASSÉ to better understand how they judge the relevance and effectiveness of these practices. While all of them believe that these measures help amplify women’s voices on an individual level, men and women have different opinions about the transformative and emancipatory potential of these practices. Men tend to highlight these measures’ re-socialization or counter-socialization effects, while women are more likely to point out their limitations. They argue that these measures fail question the gendered division of activist labor that prevails in ASSÉ. Furthermore, the interview data suggest that the costs and benefits associated with these practices are gender differentiated. Although they are designed to promote women's voices, they tend to symbolically and materially benefit to men. Meanwhile, women are responsible for the labor involved in justifying and applying these practices, and, more broadly, for providing feminist analyses within the organization. Women participants lament the fact that this invisible and undervalued work prevents them from concentrating on "political" tasks. I sketch the potential of (pro)feminist speech-sharing practices to demonstrate how conversation is indeed "political" and to hightlight the political nature of the gendered labor of listening, caring and organizing.

Full textThe actual portrait of the health behaviours of young adults reveals alarming data about the physical activity level (Colley, Garriguet, Janssen, Craig, Clarke & Tremblay, 2011). To help them adopt increase their physical activity level, it seems appropriate to set up interventions that mobilize the action of their peers (Canadian Institute for Research on Fitness and Lifestyle, 2014; 2015). They seem to give them special importance when the time comes to adopt healthy lifestyle habits (DuBois & Karcher, 2014). Therefore, peer mentoring seems a promising avenue. Although the characteristics of this type of intervention have been documented in the literature, few studies have evaluated its effects in mentees (Sallis, Calfas, Nichols, Sarkin, Johnson, Caparosa, Thomson & Alcaraz, 1999; Boyle, Mattern, Lassister & Ritzler, 2011) and even fewer have done so with mentors (Lubans, Morgan, Aguiar & Callister, 2011). From this perspective, the present study had two objectives: 1) to evaluate the effects of a peer mentoring program in college settings on the practice of physical activity, physical condition, eating behaviours, consumption of fruits and vegetables. and the sense of personal effectiveness of mentees and mentors; 2) explore the moderating role of gender and participants' initial level of physical activity on the effects of the program. These objectives were investigated using a study with a quasi-experimental design using 104 young adults (mentors n = 38, non-mentors n = 33, mentees n = 21 and non-mentees n = 12). Questionnaires as well as physical tests made it possible to measure the main variables. The covariance analyzes show that at the end of the intervention, mentees adopted fewer behaviours aimed at gaining weight than non-mentees, while mentors adopted fewer behaviours aimed at losing weight than non-mentors. In addition, moderation analyzes reveal effects in men regardless of their initial level of physical activity but not in women. In fact, 1) mentee men exhibit better estimated maximal volume of oxygen consumption (VO₂ max) than non-mentee men, 2) male mentors show a lower body mass index (BMI) than non-mentor men and 3) male mentors report more behaviours aimed at gaining weight than non-mentor men. However, although our results suggest these effects, it seems essential to us to interpret them with caution due to some methodological limitations, in particular the small sampling. We often see them as tendencies to take in count for future research. However, our results suggest that we must consider sex of participants when time comes to orient, implement, and operationalize mentoring programs, particularly for the mentors.

Full textIn this thesis, we try to assess the impact of occupational choice on life expectancy using machine learning techniques. We use Conditional Inference Trees (CTree) to obtain Kaplan- Meier survival curves that enable us to predict mortality rates regarding the influential sociodemographic features. Using the Québec and Ontario data from the 1991 census merged with the Canadian Mortality Database from 1991 to 2006, we observe a correlation between occupational choice and life expectancy for particular groups. As it was expected, we find that the primary predictor of life expectancy is the person’s sex. Education and Canadian-born status are respectively the most influential variable for men and women of both provinces

Full textVia experimental and empirical methods, this thesis consisted of three essays studies, on the one hand, the decision rules used in life-cycle decision-making with an emphasis on the correlation neglect and its consequences, and on other hand, hiring discrimination in relation to parenthood. Rational forward looking behavior requires solving complex problems involving computation of the expected maximum future valuations across choice alternatives (Emax computations). In Chapter 1, we conduct an experiment to measure the share of subjects able to perform these computations as well as the share of subjects using two alternative (sub-optimal) rules of computation which ignore correlation between future valuations. The first alternative rule captures subjects who perform Emax computations ignoring correlation between unobservables in the information set. The second alternative rule captures subjects computing the maximum of the expected future valuations (maxE computations), akin to the option-value model of Stock and Wise (1990). Our experimental design exploits different correlation structures between future valuations to separate the share of subjects using each rule. The experiment was conducted with a large and heterogenous sample of subjects, allowing to relate the propensity to use a given rule to a rich set of socio-economic characteristics. Our results suggest that 28% of subjects are able to perform Emax computations exploiting the correlation structure, 20% of subjects perform Emax computations ignoring correlation, while 52% of subjects perform maxE computations. Moreover, we find that the propensity to use a given rule significantly varies across education levels – higher educated subjects are significantly more likely to perform maxE computations. Chapter 2 studies how the labour uncertainties and increased fertility risks associated with delayed motherhood interact in shaping fertility decisions (timing and number of children). Having a child comes with more uncertainties, and agents strategically avoid uncertainties and conflict between parenthood and employment, particularly among women, by securing their employment before turning to parenthood. Consequently parenthood is being experienced on average later in life than ever. We develop a life-cycle model of labor supply and fertility choices decisions and we quantify how labor market uncertainties as well as correlation neglect contribute to fertility delaying. Our parameters estimated (preferences, wage equations, quality of children) are in line with the existing literature. Moreover, our results suggest that a reduction in the labour uncertainties affect differently fertility decisions according to the education attainment. Indeed, the reduction in labour uncertainties increases number of children and decreases the age at first childbirth for lower educated couples, however, it decreases the number of children and increases age at first childbirth of highly educated couples. The behavioural bias of correlation neglect has a heightened effect on fertility decisions and contributes to parenthood postponement. Finally, Chapter 3 presents experimental evidence about hiring discrimination in relation to parenthood in the province of Québec (Canada) via a correspondence testing. It also investigates to what extent parental leave as well as signalling work commitment reduce or reinforce hiring discrimination. Around 1300 applications were sent in response to online job openings for five categories of jobs. The results suggest that men benefit from a bonus when they experience parenthood while women undergo a penalty. Indeed, fathers have a callback rate 18 percentage points larger than their analogue childless men candidates while mother’s callback is 14 percentage points lower than the corresponding childless women’s callback. However, mothers have a higher callback rate than childless women for the job category patient attendant. Signalling job commitment does not eliminate motherhood penalty whereas substantially increases father’s callback rate. Our results suggest that taking parental leave does not affect mother’s callback rate and surprisingly increases father’s callback rate. Job mobility opens up job opportunities meaning employers tend to value the employee’s mobility.
