Abstract:
The 1980's heralded the discovery and identification of extra-pituitary sources of the neurohypophysial hormone oxytocin in non-neural tissues of several animal species. The presence, location and biosynthesis of significant amounts of oxytocin in the ovarian corpus luteum was followed by the immunocytochemical demonstration of an oxytocin-like peptide in the testicular interstitial cells. Leydig cells, which comprise up to 80% of the testicular intertubular cell population, are known to synthesize testosterone in situ. Indirect evidence indicated that an oxytocin-like peptide was also present

DNA methylation has been implicated in a range of cellular processes such as X chromosome inactivation, imprinting, the silencing of developmentally important genes and in maintaining cellular viability. However, not all of these roles are equally well supported and much of the functional work has been done in mouse alone. I took advantage of a normal but immortalised human hTERT -1604 cell line to examine the effects of depleting the maintenance methyltransferase DNMTl and carried out comparative work in other cell lines and in mouse. Patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) are usually managed with total thyroidectomy and subsequent radioiodine ablation of the remnant thyroid tissue. Since these patients become athyrotic, L-throxine (L-T4) therapy is required for life, in order to replace the thyroid hormones and also to suppress the endogenous thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) which may have a growth-promoting effect on any residual thyroid cancer cells. The approximate dose required to achieve this suppression is about 2 g/kg. However, there is wide variation between patients in their L-T4 requirement. Although

Abstract:
Macrophages are key players in both regulatory and inflammatory immune responses. They are implicated in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) where they accumulate in the synovium and produce pro-inflammatory cytokines including TNFα and IL-6. The rheumatoid synovium is metabolically distinctive, with low oxygen perfusion and high concentrations of lactate and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Macrophages are known to respond to metabolic signals, therefore we wanted to explore whether metabolic phenotypes of differentiated macrophages could play a role in the persistence of RA. We used

Background: Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease in which oxidative stress and macrophages play fundamental roles. Macrophages are heterogeneous cells in term of morphology and function and the prevalence of a specific morpho-phenotype may influence the progression or the regression of the plaque. Human coronary plaque macrophages are not easily obtainable and monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs) are widely accepted as a good surrogate. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and adipose tissue hypoxia have been shown to independently affect adipocyte functions. The goals of this study were to (1) determine the effect of PCB-77, PCB-153, and DDE on the differentiation of human preadipocytes, and (2) investigate the cross-talk between PCB-77 and hypoxia in differentiated human adipocytes. First, human preadipocytes were exposed to PCB-77, PCB-153, or DDE during the entire 14-day differentiation period. We found no effect of low POP levels on lipid accumulation.
