Amin, M. "Beliefs about difficult feelings." Thesis, Canterbury Christ Church University, 2012. http://create.canterbury.ac.uk/11178/.

Full text
Abstract:
Section A provides a review of the emotional and experiential avoidance literature with a focus on determining the proximal psychological factors that might lead individuals to avoid experiencing feelings. This section highlights the importance of beliefs, judgements and appraisals about the acceptability of negative emotions, as well as fears about the physical, psychological and social consequences of tolerating internal distress as potential drivers of emotional avoidance. Section B describes the development of a new scale to identify and measure beliefs about experiencing difficult emotions. The paper gives a background and rationale for the study and outlines the methodology that was utilised to construct and psychometrically evaluate the Beliefs about Difficult Feelings Scale (BDFS). 304 participants completed the scale online along with related measures. The six clusters of beliefs that emerged from a factor analysis of 90 pilot items include Catastrophic Beliefs, Emotions are Useful, Negative Evaluation from Others, Emotions are Exhausting/Frustrating, Emotions are Transient and Emotions are Pointless. The psychometric properties of the final 29-item BDFS are promising. The new measure demonstrated good internal consistency, test-retest reliability and construct validity, however further psychometric evaluation is needed on new samples to verify these preliminary findings

Adlerian family counseling was developed and systematized by Rudolf Dreikurs and carried into the world by his many student/colleagues, including Oscar Christensen and Manford Sonstegard. This is an experiential workshop using Dreikurs’ model in multiple family consultation demonstrations. Interventions include assessments of family constellation, mistaken goals, typical days, goal disclosure, and the use of encouragement and natural and logical consequences.

Kanesan, Manimaran. "RFID Antennas for Difficult Environments." Thesis, Griffith University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/365462.

Full text
Abstract:
The research work explored the fundamental ideas and techniques required to design an antenna placed on different common target objects for radio frequency identification. This was achieved by studying the effect of antenna conductivity in a wide range and the substrate relative permittivity from 1 to 10. The effect on wire meander antenna properties are different to that for a straight linear dipole antenna; the increase in wire radius of the meander antenna increases the resonant frequency but increases in wire radius of a straight dipole antenna decreases the resonant frequency. This study concluded that the approximate antenna bandwidth needed for common target object materials is 28.5%. A genetic algorithm GA code was written to optimize the meander antenna structure to obtain a larger bandwidth. The GA optimized each vertical element and horizontal element for radius and length. The optimized antenna has 14.5% bandwidth which covers the entire UHF RFID frequency. As conductivity is not changed further, the properties of antennas on ungrounded substrates with different permittivity and thickness were investigated. The solution for this problem involved transforming a circular cross section wire antenna structure to a planar strip antenna structure. A number of theoretical approaches were assessed to solve for the effective permittivity when the substrate material is thin. Surface impedance and slab waveguide propagation techniques were compared to a capacitive solution and an insulated wire antenna. The insulated wire method gives most accurate results (< 3.5% error) and was verified using numerical modelling and experimental work. Measurements on a planar straight dipole on FR4 (fc = 1.50GHz) compare favourably with the antenna modelled without the substrate and scaled using the insulated wire technique at (fc = 1.49GHz).
Thesis (PhD Doctorate)
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Griffith School of Engineering
Science, Environment, Engineering and Technology
Full Text

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses the difficulties in reading modern poetry that arise out of not the references but the unconventional use of language, and presents them in a theoretical framework based on Julia Kristeva&rsquo
s semanalytic theory and Melanie Parsons&rsquo
s application of it to a comparison of Nonsense literature and twentieth century poetry. Then aspects of the works of G. M. Hopkins, Dylan Thomas and Edith Sitwell are discussed and poems by these poets are analysed within this framework.

Abstract:
The study identified three areas – structural environment, social environment and the stakeholder themselves, that cause difficult situations in projects related to stakeholders, and also some examples of what difficult situations typically look like in a project. The study found that difficult situations have an impact on a project, as well as on the project manager themselves. Building on this the research identified that project managers adopt two different coping strategies when they deal with difficult situations created by project stakeholders. These are project coping strategies and personal coping strategies. The research findings enabled a validated framework for Coping Strategies with Difficult Stakeholders to be developed whilst highlighting some practical recommendations for project management practitioners to use when encountering difficult stakeholders.
