Amin, M. "Beliefs about difficult feelings." Thesis, Canterbury Christ Church University, 2012. http://create.canterbury.ac.uk/11178/.

Full text
Abstract:
Section A provides a review of the emotional and experiential avoidance literature with a focus on determining the proximal psychological factors that might lead individuals to avoid experiencing feelings. This section highlights the importance of beliefs, judgements and appraisals about the acceptability of negative emotions, as well as fears about the physical, psychological and social consequences of tolerating internal distress as potential drivers of emotional avoidance. Section B describes the development of a new scale to identify and measure beliefs about experiencing difficult emotions. The paper gives a background and rationale for the study and outlines the methodology that was utilised to construct and psychometrically evaluate the Beliefs about Difficult Feelings Scale (BDFS). 304 participants completed the scale online along with related measures. The six clusters of beliefs that emerged from a factor analysis of 90 pilot items include Catastrophic Beliefs, Emotions are Useful, Negative Evaluation from Others, Emotions are Exhausting/Frustrating, Emotions are Transient and Emotions are Pointless. The psychometric properties of the final 29-item BDFS are promising. The new measure demonstrated good internal consistency, test-retest reliability and construct validity, however further psychometric evaluation is needed on new samples to verify these preliminary findings

Kanesan, Manimaran. "RFID Antennas for Difficult Environments." Thesis, Griffith University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/365462.

Full text
Abstract:
The research work explored the fundamental ideas and techniques required to design an antenna placed on different common target objects for radio frequency identification. This was achieved by studying the effect of antenna conductivity in a wide range and the substrate relative permittivity from 1 to 10. The effect on wire meander antenna properties are different to that for a straight linear dipole antenna; the increase in wire radius of the meander antenna increases the resonant frequency but increases in wire radius of a straight dipole antenna decreases the resonant frequency. This study concluded that the approximate antenna bandwidth needed for common target object materials is 28.5%. A genetic algorithm GA code was written to optimize the meander antenna structure to obtain a larger bandwidth. The GA optimized each vertical element and horizontal element for radius and length. The optimized antenna has 14.5% bandwidth which covers the entire UHF RFID frequency. As conductivity is not changed further, the properties of antennas on ungrounded substrates with different permittivity and thickness were investigated. The solution for this problem involved transforming a circular cross section wire antenna structure to a planar strip antenna structure. A number of theoretical approaches were assessed to solve for the effective permittivity when the substrate material is thin. Surface impedance and slab waveguide propagation techniques were compared to a capacitive solution and an insulated wire antenna. The insulated wire method gives most accurate results (< 3.5% error) and was verified using numerical modelling and experimental work. Measurements on a planar straight dipole on FR4 (fc = 1.50GHz) compare favourably with the antenna modelled without the substrate and scaled using the insulated wire technique at (fc = 1.49GHz).<br>Thesis (PhD Doctorate)<br>Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)<br>Griffith School of Engineering<br>Science, Environment, Engineering and Technology<br>Full Text

Olijnek, Darcie. "What makes abortion a difficult experience." Thesis, McGill University, 1991. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=60559.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis draws on twenty-three women's retrospective accounts of their abortion experiences to examine the course of their feelings and the social, situational and personal contexts in which these feelings arose. Their experiences and feelings were affected by abortion's morally ambiguous status; its quasi-legal status (particularly between 1969 and 1988); its provision in medical settings in ways that differ significantly from the provision of other health services; and the on-going polarized ideological conflict over its acceptability. The experiences and feelings of the women interviewed were also affected subtly and profoundly by widely held expectations about how women in such situations normally do and should feel. The thesis examines the "feeling rules" (Hochschild, 1979) women encountered in interactions with others (confidants and health-care providers, notably abortion counselors) and how women's actual feelings, especially after the abortion, became problematic.

Strevy, Sonia R. "Communicating with difficult patients : nurses' perceptions." Virtual Press, 1993. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/865936.

Full text
Abstract:
Communicating With Difficult Patients: Nurses' Perceptions Effective communication is paramount in any nurse-patient relationship. Nurses must develop good interpersonal skills with which to evaluate patient needs, provide therapeutic interaction and obtain mutual goals. The purpose of this study was to describe the variables present in nurses self reported communication with difficult patients.Imogene King provides the theoretical framework for this study using the concept of goal attainment as the basis. The Difficult Patient Assessment Tool (Podrasky & Sexton, 1988) was used to measure communication with difficult patients, along with the addition of an open-ended question. A convenience sample of 25 (40%) R.N.'s and L.P.N.'s from a community hospital in the Midwest was used. The procedures for the protection of human subjects were followed. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data.Findings of the study included that nurses perceive difficult patients as demanding, never satisfied, confused, frustrating, female, noncompliant, manipulative and uncooperative. Nurses reacted to the communication that takes place with the difficult patient, with feelings of frustration, incompetence, anger, disgust, anxiety, and at times, "O.K.". Nurses most frequently interact with difficult patients in informative, pragmatic, supportive, prescriptive and catalytic manners. The resulting transaction between the nurse and the difficult patient included feelings of frustration, fright, confusion and hurt. Conclusions were that difficult patients are perceived as making unrealistic demands on the nurses' time, and impair nursing interactions. Nurses' transactions resulted in both positive and negative reactions, depending on the situation, and the reactive patterns of the nurse. Nurses tend to take a more authoritative, rather than a facilitative role in interactions with difficult patients.Implications include the need for learned communication patterns which may or may not be effective in dealing with difficult patients. Effective communication skills involve not only acquired knowledge, but also knowledge of self and one's perceptions and values. Self knowledge of communication patterns, and how to improve on those patterns, might be helpful.<br>School of Nursing

Zhang, Penghe. "Mapping buried utilities in difficult environments." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2018. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/51978/.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a large number of underground utilities buried in urban areas, which is one of the most complex networks in the world. It has been estimated that only 50% of buried utilities are accurately recorded. However, failure to identify accurately the location of existing buried utilities results in numerous practical problems, costs and dangers for utility owners, contractors and road users. The underground utilities positioning accuracy requirement is 100 mm for both the accuracy of positioning system and the accuracy of detection devices. While the accuracy up to 300 mm would be acceptable for many respondents. This aim of this thesis is to research various means of improving the accuracy of positioning systems and the accuracy of detection devices for underground utilities in urban areas. GNSS is mainly used to find and record the position of utilities. However, the performance of GNSS is constrained by an insufficient number of visible satellites, poor satellite geometry and multipath in urban areas. The combination of GNSS systems increases the possible visible satellite number. Moreover, the geometry of satellites will be improved by integrating different GNSS constellations. This thesis evaluates the performance of different GNSS constellations such as GPS, GLONASS, BDS and QZSS and multi-GNSS integration in a controlled environment at UNNC and Ningbo city centre. The results provide evidence that using more than one GNSS constellation will significantly increase the availability of GNSS positions and improve the satellite geometry. There are 75% markers (21 out of 28) on campus of UNNC obtained the positioning error within 10cm either by GPS, BDS or GPS and BDS integration. In Ningbo city centre static test, 47% positions (7 out of 15) obtain ambiguity fixed solutions by GPS and BDS. For the underground utilities detection system, this thesis develops a low-cost IMU and odometer integration system to estimate the position of an approximately 30m long test pipeline. Moreover, a tightly coupled integration between IMU and odometer is developed to decrease error caused by the odometer installation attitude error and scale factor error. Besides this, a novel approach to this application of using a Robust Kalman filter is developed to remove the effect of odometer measurement outliers due to wheel-slip. Compared with the loosely coupled integration method, the use of loosely coupled integration with scale factor correction, tightly coupled integration and tightly coupled with Robust Kalman filter provide a horizontal position improvement of 11%, 41% and 43%, respectively. Similarly, the height accuracy is improved by 14%, 50% and 57% before the wheel-slip. The Wheel-slip leads to wrong odometer measurement that makes the positioning results far away from the truth. After applying Robust Kalman filter, the positioning error is reduced to 0.61 m in the horizontal plane, and 0.11 m in the height. Moreover, if using the forward and backward Kalman filter with known start and end positions, the test pipeline positioning maximum error in height is 4 cm, and the maximum horizontal error is 10 cm.

Kim, Min-seok. "Associative skew clock routing for difficult instances." Texas A&M University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/3856.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis studies the associative skew clock routing problem, which seeks a clock routing tree such that zero skew is preserved only within identified groups of sinks. Although the number of constraints is reduced, the problem becomes more difficult to solve due to the enlarged solution space. Perhaps, the only previous study used a very primitive delay model which could not handle difficult instances when sink groups are intermingled. We reuse existing techniques to solve this problem including difficult instances based on an improved delay model. Experimental results show that our algorithm can reduce the total clock routing wirelength by 9%–15% compared to greedy-DME, which is one of the best zero skew routing algorithms.

Full text
Abstract:
The switch from a fixed exchange rate regime to a flexible exchange rate regime seldom goes smoothly. A major reason why devaluations are so disruptive is that countries are reluctant to abandon their fixed exchange rate regimes. This “reluctance to devalue” phenomenon is one of the puzzles in international finance. This dissertation makes towards understanding this “reluctance to devalue”. First, I investigate the factors that may influence the probability of a switch from a fixed to a flexible exchange rate regime using survival models. I find that pegs have non-monotonic duration dependence. Moreover, I find that GDP growth strongly influences the probability of abandoning a peg. Second, I propose that the “reluctance to devalue” could stem from uncertainty about the control over inflation after devaluation which raises the threshold of economic pain that could convince policy makers to devalue. I develop this argument in a rules-vs-discretion theoretical framework. Empirical analysis based on survey data from Bulgaria supports this hypothesis. Given that abandoning a fixed exchange rate regime is one of the three options that are available to countries on a peg, I investigate whether a periphery country's decision to abandon its peg is impacted by a potential move to a currency union. I find that the perception of “insurance” justified by expected-bailouts in a currency union increase the support for joining a currency union. The strength of this “safety net” perception is strong despite expected negative impact of the currency union on the country’s macroeconomic indicators.

Thomson, Mary Ellen. "Factors predisposing to difficult labour in primiparas." Thesis, McGill University, 1985. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=72043.

Full text
Abstract:
A definition of difficult labour was developed after reviewing the literature, consulting with experts, and examining alternatives. Difficult labour, in primiparas, was defined as either prolonged labour with vaginal delivery, longer than 15 hours from admission to full dilatation, or cesarean section after admission for uncomplicated labour. This measure proved, to a satisfactory degree, practical, reliable and valid.<br>A study of predisposing factors, measured prior to labour onset, was conducted in 1,125 primiparas at two hospitals, a community hospital and a high-risk referral hospital. Analysis was restricted to 781 primiparas, admitted to hospital for uncomplicated (spontaneous) labour. Rates of difficult labour were 17% at the community hospital and 24% at the high-risk referral hospital. Rates of cesarean section were in keeping with high rates reported elsewhere, but rates of prolonged labour were higher than expected. Anxiety about childbirth, as self reported prior to labour onset, was not found to predispose to difficult labour, nor was lack of attendance at childbirth education classes. Factors predisposing to difficult labour, at both hospitals, were short maternal height (p = 0.01) and heavy body mass index, kg/m('2) (p = 0.01). Further research is needed, using a reliable measure of difficult labour, to clarify reasons for labour differences between women and hospitals.

Stormonth-Darling, John Moir. "Fabrication of difficult nanostructures by injection moulding." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2013. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/4456/.

Full text
Abstract:
There is an increasing demand for nanostructured polymeric surfaces for many scientific and commercial applications including the fields of cell and tissue engineering, where the study of the ways that cells interact with their environment holds great potential for the future of regenerative medicine. Current replication based fabrication techniques, such as hot embossing, which are used to produce nanostructured surfaces for this type of research are not fast enough to keep up with the growing demand for them. Injection moulding offers a high throughput alternative to these processes and can upscale the production of nanopatterned samples by several orders of magnitude. However, the nickel moulds traditionally used to injection mould micro- and nanostructures are limited to producing recessed features due to the rate at which the injected polymer cools upon contact with it. In order to replicate raised features (e.g. pillars) the polymer needs enough time to fill the nanoscale cavities of the mould before freezing. A solution to this limitation of nickel tooling is devised and implemented, using a thermally insulating tooling material that facilitates the formation of nanopillars by injection moulding. This tooling material can be patterned by a range of fabrication techniques including photolithography and nanoimprint lithography. The tooling can be used to replicate nanopatterns over underlying micron and millimetre scale topographies. This flexible solution enables the large volume production of samples containing raised poly(carbonate) nanopillars without significantly compromising cycle time. Following this, the technique is adapted in an attempt to replicate high aspect ratio nanostructures. In this section a range of non-adhesive surface coatings are tested for their abilities to enhance the replication process through the systematic analysis of their durability and the replication fidelity that they enable. Nanopillars with aspect ratios of greater than 10:1 are successfully produced and are used to fabricate surfaces for cell engineering research. This success is also demonstrative of the technique’s potential to mass produce nanostructures for other applications such as non-reflective and dry adhesive surfaces. Finally, a study is undertaken to replicate microstructures with an elastomeric polymer. The tooling solution is used to assess the minimum feature size that can be replicated with this polymer and how processing parameters and non-adhesive coatings can improve this. This thesis documents the development of a range of enabling techniques which add to the existing toolbox of nanofabrication technologies. They address a growing demand for nanostructured polymeric surfaces in cell and tissue engineering research, whilst remaining open and adaptable to any application that requires the high throughput production of nanopatterned polymeric samples.

Wong, Tom. "Mapping and ablation of difficult atrial arrhythmias." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2006. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.439895.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the role of both conventional and contemporary mapping techniques and novel ablative modalities to map and to treat these difficult arrhythmias. We investigated the use of a range of mapping systems in examining the substrates for these arrhythmias including body surface 12-lead ECG mapping in patients with a Fontan circulation, contact Halo tricuspid annular activation assessment for right free wall accessory pathways, non-contact mapping in atrial fibrillation, and cryomapping in peri-nodal arrhythmias.  We hypothesised that insights into the arrhythmia substrates will facilitate the design of preventative strategies for Fontan associated arrhythmias as well as enhancing the safety and effectiveness of ablative therapy in the other atrial arrhythmias. Atrial fibrillation is the commonest sustained arrhythmia in humans and is widely acknowledged as the area in electrophysiology in which significant advancements are awaited to improve the efficacy and safety of ablative procedures.  Therefore, the last two chapters were dedicated to investigation of the role of alternative sources of ablative energies and catheter designs in the treatment of atrial fibrillation.  We tested the hypotheses that cryoablation and the focused ultrasound balloon catheter may have distinct advantages over conventional radiofrequency catheters in performing electrical isolation of pulmonary veins for the treatment of patients with atrial fibrillation. In conclusion I synthesize our experience with these cutting edge techniques and place our contribution in the context of the prevailing knowledge of these difficult to treat arrhythmias, undoubtedly the new frontier in cardiac electrophysiology.

Abstract:
One of the most challenging tasks for many early childhood providers is how to support families who are facing tough, difficult issues like death of a parent, PTSD, abuse, and neglect. Not only do these issues impact the family’s overall functioning and well being and the quality of parents’ interactions with their young children but they also affect the relationship between the family and the early childhood providers (e.g., missed appointments and adversarial interactions). Dr. Carol Trivette will cap her yearlong webinar series sharing resources and discussing evidence-based practices that providers can implement when they are working with military families in particular, who are facing difficult situations. Participants are encouraged to engage and share challenges, resources, and successes they have experienced working with families of young children with disabilities.

The objective of this Ph.D. thesis is to study the micro-cutting (micro-milling) of difficult-to-cut materials, devoted to the biomedical applications. In the first part of this work the interest is aimed to the process and understanding the cutting mechanisms at this scale, in order to choose the most suitable cutting conditions on the basis of the final application. The actual state-of-the-art in the micro-manufacturing technologies with the target to the micro-milling process was investigated, with the aim of a better understanding of the cutting process and its mechanisms at micro-level. In particular, up to now, the machinability of difficult-to-cut metals have not been deeply investigated under micro-milling conditions, especially in combination with additive manufacturing (AM) technologies, such as Electron Beam Melting (EBM) and Direct Laser Sintering (DLS), which are more and more used in industry, especially in a biomedical field. In the second part of this thesis different AM techniques will be studied and their influence on the final material properties especially in relation to the biomedical implants and their function. Third part of this work consists of the micro-cutting experiments conducted on Ti6Al4V biomedical alloy produced by different AM techniques. Their performances in micro-cutting world are studied and compared especially in the regards of the final applications, thus the most relevant parameters are studied as the quality of the surface finish, burrs formation, microstructural alterations, surface defect, tool state after machining etc.<br>L'obiettivo di questa tesi di dottorato è di studiare il micro-taglio (micro-fresatura) di materiali difficili da tagliare, impiegati nelle applicazioni biomediche.

Abstract:
When students solve mathematics tasks, the tasks are commonly given as written text, usually consisting of natural language, mathematical notation and different types of images. This is one reason why reading and interpreting such texts are important parts of being mathematically proficient, at least within the school context. The ability utilized when dealing with aspects of mathematical text is denoted in this thesis as a mathematical reading ability; this ability is useful when reading mathematical language, for example, in task text. There is, however, a lack of knowledge of what characterizes this mathematical language, what students need to learn regarding the mathematical language, and exactly which mathematical language that tests should preferably assess. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the knowledge of aspects of difficulty related to textual features in mathematics tasks. In particular, one aim is to distinguish between a difficulty that has to do with a mathematical ability and another that has not. Different types of text analyses are utilized to capture textural features that might be demanding for the students when reading and solving mathematics tasks. Aspects regarding vocabulary are investigated both in a literature review and in a study where corpora are used to analyse word commonness. Other textual analyses focus on textual features that concern mathematical notation and images, besides natural language. Statistical methods are used to analyse potential relations between the textual features of interest and both task difficulty and task demand on reading ability. The results from the research review are sparse regarding difficult vocabulary, since few of the reviewed studies analyses word aspects separately. Several of the analysed textual features are related to aspects of difficulty. The results show that tasks with more words that are uncommon both in a mathematical context and in an everyday context, may favour students with good reading ability rather than students with good mathematical ability. Another textual feature that is likely to be demanding for students, is if the task texts contains many meaning relations, for example, when several words refer to the same or similar object. These results have implications for the school practice both regarding textual features that are important from an educational perspective and regarding the construction of tests. The research does also contribute to an understanding of what characterizes a mathematical language.

Abstract:
This exegesis and the accompanying studio work poses the question of whether there is value in telling difficult stories in the documentary context for the person who has experienced the difficulties, as well as for those who may subsequently listen to such stories as viewers. The studio work, a one-hour broadcast documentary, follows a family for two years after the death of their daughter. The exegesis examines the risks involved for those who are telling and listening, and also examines the role of the filmmaker within such contexts. The filmmaker critically reflects on her professional experiences as a paediatric intensive care nurse, examining how these experiences came into play in her role as documentary-maker in the submitted work. The notion that there is value in producing stories that deal with difficult subjects is considered in light of research that looks at individual responses to trauma. New practices in digital and participative storytelling are scrutinised as offering alternative frameworks for difficult storytelling.<br>Thesis (Professional Doctorate)<br>Doctor of Visual Arts (DVA)<br>Griffith Film School<br>Arts, Education and Law<br>Full Text

Yapici, Guney Guven. "Severe plastic deformation of difficult-to-work alloys." Thesis, Texas A&M University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/531.

Full text
Abstract:
The present work aims to reveal the microstructural evolution and post-processing mechanical behavior of difficult-to-work alloys upon severe plastic deformation. Severe plastic deformation is applied using equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) where billets are pressed through a 90o corner die achieving simple shear deformation. Three different materials are studied in this research, namely Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-6Al-4V reinforced with 10% TiC and AISI 316L stainless steel. Microstructure and mechanical properties of successfully extruded billets were reported using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), tension and compression experiments and microhardness measurements. The effects of extrusion conditions (temperature and processing route) on the microstructure and mechanical properties are investigated. The underlying mechanisms responsible for observed mechanical behaviors are explored. It is seen that ECAE shear deformation leads to refinement in α plates and elimination of prior β boundaries in Ti-6Al-4V. Decreasing extrusion temperature and increasing number of passes decreases α plate size and grain size. Refined α grain size leads to a significant increase in tensile and compressive flow stresses at room temperature. Texture produced by ECAE has a pronounced effect on mechanical properties. Specifically it leads to tension/compression asymmetry in flow strengths and strain hardening coefficients may be described by the activation of differing slip systems under tension and compression loading. ECAE of Ti-6Al-4V+10%TiC samples also improved mechanical properties due to α plate size refinement. Nevertheless, further extrusion passes should be carried out for tailoring reinforcement size and distribution providing optimum strength and ductility. ECAE deformation of AISI 316L stainless steel at high homologous temperatures (0.55 to 0.60 Tm) results in deformation twinning as an effective deformation mechanism which is attributed to the effect of the high stress levels on the partial dislocation separation. Deformation twinning gives rise to high stress levels during post-processing room temperature tension and compression experiments by providing additional barriers to dislocation motion and decreasing the mean free path of dislocations. The highest tensile flow stress observed in the sample processed at 700 oC following one pass route A was on the order of 1200 MPa which is very high for 316L stainless steel. The ultimate goal of this study is to produce stabilized end microstructures with improved mechanical properties and demonstrate the applicability of ECAE on difficult-to-work alloys.

Lynch, Larry. "The difficult impossible : writing, perfomance and the subject." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/1137.

Abstract:
This thesis summarises a period of practice-led research into relationships between imting and performance. It considers ways in which performance (especially performance art) might serve as a critical and methodological lens through which to explore the practice of writing — primarily the author's own. It is located in the recentiy designated field of Performance Writing, whose interdisciplinary approach it adopts. Responding to a perceived condition of impasse (not writing) in the author's relationship to textual production, the thesis charts a process of deploying performance (and subsequentiy video) art as a research methodology, using its emphasis on temporal, spatial, material and corporeal concerns, to focus on writing as material and physical act - aspects of writing that are magnified by the experience of being a miter not imting. The thesis suggests that the experience of impasse was symptomatic of difficulties reconciling the relationship between language and subjectivity, and that this difficulty originates in the author's exposure to certain theological and doctrinal practices. It acknowledges, however, that the emphasis on ritual performativity and embodiment in much Christian liturgy has shaped both his relationship .to the written word, and his performance-based approach to challenging the condition of impasse itself. The thesis is divided into two main parts: the first considers context and methodology; the second tracks the narrative of the research, from the condition of impasse to the production of poetic writing. Sub-divided into three phases {Performing (not) Writing^ Hybrid Practice and Poetry and Performance, the second part deploys differing modes: fragments of autobiographical narrative, specific theoretical discussions, examples of, and commentaries on, practical experiments, and the inclusion of practical work itself. The thesis draws on specific theoretical and philosophical perspectives that are themselves engaged with interplay between questions of writing, subjectivity and interdisciplinarity - most notably those of Jacques Derrida and Helene Cixous.

Jones, Hannah. "Uncomfortable positions : how policy practitioners negotiate difficult subjects." Thesis, Goldsmiths College (University of London), 2011. http://research.gold.ac.uk/6441/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how policy practitioners negotiate difficult subjects, specifically the difficult subjects entailed in negotiations around community cohesion policy. The research applies a governmentality perspective to consider how people working within government (using techniques of governmentality to govern populations) are subject to regimes of governmentality themselves. A substantial body of the research is based on detailed ethnographic work (both participant observation and extensive semi-structured, reflexive qualitative interviews with policy practitioners) in Hackney, an inner London borough with a very diverse population (in terms of ethnicity, economic status, migration histories, beliefs and experiences). Hackney rarely appears in narratives of community cohesion policy, and local practitioners have framed it as a place that is comfortable with diversity – a success story of twenty-first century multiculturalism. Often this story is told (in everyday talk and in official documents) by reference to places which have come to epitomise 'community cohesion problems', specifically Oldham (representing segregation between white and Asian communities, the potential for explosive violence), Barking and Dagenham (standing for problems with a disenfranchised 'white working class' turning to racist extremism) and Peterborough (as a place coping with sudden large-scale new immigration). The thesis follows these narratives, interviewing policy practitioners in each of these places to understand how they negotiate community cohesion policy from within the narrative, as well as policy practitioners working with local government at the national level who shed light on how places, communities and the practice of policy are understood from this location. The thesis raises questions of how to understand practices of government, and the uncomfortable and ambiguous ethical negotiations such practices sometimes entail; the importance of place and place-branding in governing; the relationship of narrative, place and governing to questions of material power inequalities; and the potential for understanding government through a 'sociological imagination'.

Abstract:
This thesis primarily reports on an action research project that has been conducted on a course in theoretical computer science (TCS). The course is called Algorithms, data structures, and complexity (ADC) and is given at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. The ADC course is an introduction to TCS, but resembles and succeeds courses introducing programming, system development best practices, problem solving, proving, and logic. Requiring the completion of four programming projects, the course can easily be perceived as a programming course by the students. Most previous research in computer science education has been on programming and introductory courses. The focus of the thesis work has been to understand what subject matter is particularly difficult to students. In three action research cycles, the course has been studied and improved to alleviate the discovered difficulties. We also discuss how the course design may color students’ perceptions of what TCS is. Most of the results are descriptive. Additionally, automated assessment has been introduced in the ADC course as well as in introductory courses for non-CS majors. Automated assessment is appreciated by the students and is directing their attention to the importance of program correctness. A drawback is that the exercises in their current form are not likely to encourage students to take responsibility for program correctness. The most difficult tasks of the course are related to proving correctness, solving complex dynamic programming problems, and to reductions. A certain confusion regarding the epistemology, tools and discourse of the ADC course and of TCS in general can be glimpsed in the way difficulties manifest themselves. Possible consequences of viewing the highly mathematical problems and tools of ADC in more practical, programming, perspective, are discussed. It is likely that teachers could explicitly address more of the nature and discourse of TCS in order to reduce confusion among the students, for instance regarding the use of such words and constructs as “problem”, “verify a solution”, and “proof sketch”. One of the tools used to study difficulties was self-efficacy surveys. No correlation was found between the self-efficacy beliefs and the graded performance on the course. Further investigation of this is beyond the scope of this thesis, but may be done with tasks corresponding more closely and exclusively to each self-efficacy item. Didactics is an additional way for a professional to understand his or her subject. Didactics is concerned with the teaching and learning of something, and hence sheds light on that “something” from an angle that sometimes is not reflected on by its professionals. Reflecting on didactical aspects of TCS can enrichen the understanding of the subject itself, which is one goal with this work.<br><p>QC 20140929</p>

Trowell, Ian. "Difficult fun : fairground as heritage, heritage as fairground." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2017. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/20526/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the British travelling fairground as a unique tradition and ongoing practice of the past, present and future, to create a wider dialogue with our understanding of heritage practices. The fairground is approached as a complex assemblage of objects and affects that has a sinuous historical trail, making its relationship to heritage practices a valuable insight in the wider environment of embracing our past. A key aspect of my work looks at, listens to, and explores the fairground and develops a detailed ontology of objects that set off a network of affects, making a major contribution to how the fairground is understood. This is then set out in a diachronic arrangement as the essence of change is investigated, understood as overlapping cycles connected to the content of the fairground, the space of the fairground, the music of the fairground, and the close synergy between accelerated popular culture and the visual presentation of the fairground. Central to this is the audience demographic, and the issue of when we most appreciate the fairground, and when we no longer feel a part of the fairground. This provides an understanding of our heritage seeking behaviour and expectations. Heritage of the fairground is identified in five key contexts: the static museum collection, the steam rally movement, the specialist vintage travelling fair, the living museum (examples that incorporate a period fairground), and the specific re-creation of a seaside amusement park. These heritage efforts are investigated with site reports analysed using a wide toolbox: spatial practice, situational aesthetics, textual analysis, and audience granularity (including the protagonist who sets up and controls the collection). Drawing on and synthesising the fieldwork from the fairground heritage sectors, I present case studies around notions of authenticity, vernacular flows, space and building, and future planning considerations. The thesis concludes by illuminating points of dialogue to the wider heritage field, addressing the growing uncertainty around the convergence of the museum and the theme park.

Clements, Jane. "Difficult knowledge : possibilities of learning in holocaust education." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2010. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10007361/.

Full text
Abstract:
Within the last two decades, the study in UK classrooms of the Holocaust narrative (that is, the twentieth century events whereby six million Jews and many others perished through Nazi policies) has developed considerably. Reasons given for this are not limited to its importance in European history, but include its use as a stimulus to pupils in considering wider social and moral issues. Both the literature on the subject of Holocaust Education and classroom practitioners cite rationales which include countering racism and encouraging active approaches to citizenship. This is despite existing bodies of knowledge in related fields which indicate that sustained behavioural change among pupils as a result of such lessons is unlikely. Notwithstanding the depressing nature of the subject matter, teachers who are particularly committed to this topic often cite positive responses in the classroom in terms of pupil engagement. The research question addressed in this study concerns what pupils may be learning in these lessons and involves qualitative research carried out mainly in three English secondary schools. Findings suggest that Holocaust Education can help pupils to develop a greater awareness of the nature of humanity and the fragility of social values, including an appreciation of the complexity of making moral choices. The discourse within which the teacher approaches the lessons is a defining factor, but she cannot predict the way in which the pupil will respond. Pupil engagement may enable teacher desires to be fulfilled, while pupils may experience a perception of empowerment, deriving from a sense of partnership with the teacher as they confront 'difficult knowledge' together. While specific aims and objectives set for Holocaust Education are unrealistic, the development of positive classroom relationships and the possibilities for learning experiences may be enhanced.

Abstract:
Cumulative risk models provide a convenient, parsimonious way to identify outcomes associated with multiple, highly correlated risk factors. In this paper, we explored linkages between a cumulative sociodemographic risk index, which included rurality status, and aspects of temperamental difficulty in an early school age sample of 53 school-aged children from Southcentral Appalachia. Cumulative risk was significantly predictive of temperamental difficulty, as defined by high negative affectivity and low effortful control, but post-hoc analyses revealed this association to be driven primarily by two of the eight risk indicators: rural status and income-to-needs risk. Although rurality status was highly correlated with income-to-needs risk, rurality predicted negative affectivity over and above income-to-needs risk and income-to-needs risk predicted effortful control over and above rurality status. Future models of cumulative risk may benefit from including rurality status as a risk indicator, despite high collinearity with income-to-needs risk.

Abstract:
New methods of fetal anomaly detection will offer increasingly detailed information to prospective parents but are likely to lead to more frequent discovery of anomalies with an ambiguous prognosis for the future child. It is important to consider the ethical implications of such ambiguity prior to introducing new tests. An examination of the bioethics literature reveals 'promoting autonomy' as the predominant justification for fetal anomaly detection. Two questions arise: does the fetal anomaly detection programme as it stands promote autonomy, and is 'promoting autonomy' an appropriate ethical principle in this context? To answer these questions, an empirical bioethics approach using a reflexive balancing methodology is employed. This examines qualitative data from interviews of prospective parents who had had to decide, on the basis of such an ambiguous prognosis, whether or not to continue their pregnancy. On the basis of different accounts of autonomy, it is argued that the fetal anomaly detection programme does not promote autonomy when decisions are based on an uncertain prognosis. Moreover, 'promoting autonomy' is not, on its own, an appropriate aim in this setting, as the participants did not use their choice as a means of self-expression, the decisions were made by two people and were heavily swayed by considerations for the future child, and under conditions of uncertainty it is not possible to attain the level of rational decision-making required by most accounts of autonomy. Furthermore, the impacts of the decision reduce the benefit of any potential opportunity for self-expression through these choices. The data indicated that a welfare approach might be more appropriate, and it was concluded that, whilst a welfare approach did not entirely encompass all of the nuances of the participants' experiences, it was the better fit, giving some useful indications for an ethical framework for an expanded offer of testing.
