Abstract:
As entomopathogens are detrimental to the development or even survival of insect societies, ant colonies should avoid digging into a substrate that is contaminated by fungal spores. Here, we test the hypotheses that Myrmica rubra ant workers (i) detect and avoid fungus-infected substrates and (ii) excavate nest patterns that minimize their exposure to entomopathogenic spores. Small groups of M. rubra workers were allowed to dig their nest in a two-dimensional sand plate of which one half of the substrate contained fungal spores of Metarhizium brunneum , while the other half was spore-free. We found that the overall digging dynamics of M. rubra nests was not altered by the presence of fungus spores. By contrast, the shape of the excavated areas markedly differed: control nests showed rather isotropic patterns, whereas nests that were partially dug into a fungus-contaminated substrate markedly deviated from a circular shape. This demonstrates that the sanitary risks associated with a digging substrate are key factors in nest morphogenesis. We also found that M. rubra colonies were able to discriminate between the two substrates (fungus-infected or not). Furthermore, some colonies unexpectedly showed a high consistency in excavating mainly the infected substrate. This seemingly suboptimal preference for a contaminated soil suggests that non-lethal doses of fungal spores could help ant colonies to trigger ‘immune priming’. The presence of fungi may also indicate favourable ecological conditions, such as humid and humus-rich soil, that ants use as a cue for selecting suitable nesting sites.

Hoff, Paulo Marcelo Gehm. "Estudo de fase II avaliando eficácia e toxicidade de UFT (uracil e tegafur) e leucovorin, administrados duas vezes ao dia, no tratamento de pacientes com câncer metastático de cólon e reto." Universidade de São Paulo, 2007. http://www.teses.usp.br/teses/disponiveis/5/5154/tde-31052007-162509/.

Abstract:
Prolonged infusions have been shown to be safer and potentially more effective than bolus regimens of 5- fluorouracil as treatment for advanced colorectal cancer. However, infusional 5- fluorouracil requires central venous access and costly infusion pumps. Development of oral fluoropyrimidines has allowed longer exposures to 5-fluorouracil with increased convenience. UFT and leucovorin given thrice daily showed improved safety and no significant difference in survival or response rate compared with bolus 5- fluorouracil and leucovorin. This study with 98 patients was conducted to evaluate whether UFT and leucovorin given twice daily provided comparable time to progression (TTP) to the same combination administered three times a day. Secondary objectives included evaluation of toxicity, overall tumor response rate, and survival. Median time to progression was 3.8 months, compared with 3.5 months observed with the thrice-daily regimen. The twice-daily regimen had a response rate of 11% and median survival of 12.8 months, comparable to the 12% and 12.4 months seen with the thrice-daily regimen. The incidence of grade 3-4 drug-related diarrhea was 30% on the twice-daily and 21% on the thrice-daily schedule. Results suggest that the twice-daily schedule has similar safety and efficacy to the thrice-daily schedule.

Abstract:
Adaptation to environmental changes is important for the survival of living organisms. Under extreme abiotic conditions, organic molecules (such as lipids, proteins and nucleic acids) are prone to damage. Under these conditions stress response mechanisms are activated, either to prevent the source of damage or to promote the rapid turnover of damaged molecules. Like all photoautotrophic organisms, cyanobacteria are sensitive to high light intensity and oxidative stress, which induces damage to the photosynthetic apparatus. My thesis is divided in two subjects related to particular stress responses in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803: 1) the role of Deg/HtrA proteases and 2) investigations on the small CAB-like proteins. Deg/HtrA proteases are ATP-independent serine endopeptidases with a characteristic C-terminal PDZ domain. These proteases are largely dispersed among living organisms, with many different functions, mostly involved in protein quality control. The genome of Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 contains three genes coding for Deg/HtrA proteases: HtrA, HhoA and HhoB. These proteases are essential for survival under high light and heat stress, and may overlap in their functions. During my Ph.D. studies I focused on the identification of the precise localization of the Deg/HtrA proteases in the cyanobacterial cell, analyzed the biochemical properties of recombinant Synechocystis Deg/HtrA proteases in vitro and adopted proteomic and metabolomic approaches to study the physiological importance of these proteases. My data show that Deg/HtrA proteases are not only important in stress response mechanisms under adverse conditions, but are also involved in the stabilization of important physiological processes, such as polysaccharides biosynthesis and peptidoglycan turnover. The small CAB-like proteins (SCPs) belong to the light harvesting-like family of stress induced proteins and are thought to be involved in the photoprotection of the photosynthetic apparatus. Five small CAB-like proteins where identified in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 (ScpA-E). In my studies I identified another relative to the SCPs, LilA, which I found to be co-transcribed with ScpD. I also focused on the subcellular localization and identification of potential interaction partners of the SCPs.

Abstract:
Lavada “Dr. Hepcat” Durst was the first African American popular music disc jockey in Texas. His radio program The Rosewood Ramble was broadcast on Austin station KVET-1300 AM from 1948 until 1963. KVET’s white owners, who included future Texas politicians John Connally and J. J. “Jake” Pickle, were not outspoken advocates for the rights of African Americans under Jim Crow, but they hired Durst in a concentrated effort to expand KVET’s African American listening audience. The Rosewood Ramble became a cultural, economic, and psychological resource for black radio listeners in segregated central Texas while also becoming the region’s most popular radio show among white listeners. This paper uses a mixture of oral history and archival sources to argue that Durst’s fifteen-year career at KVET was only the best-known part of a lifetime spent as an information broker to Austin’s embattled black community.

Abstract:
This research is concerned with the complex and contested relationship between the sovereign prerogatives of states and the international imperative of defusing world conflicts. Due to its historical setting following World War Two, the national vs. international staking of claims was framed within the escalating imperial-nationalist confrontation and the impending “end of empire”, both of which were significantly influenced by the role Israel played in this saga. The research looks at the issue of “decolonization” and the anti-colonial struggle waged under the leadership of Egypt’s President Nasser. The Suez War is analyzed as the historical event that signaled the beginning of the final chapter in the domination of the European empires in the Middle East (sub-Saharan decolonization followed beginning in the early 1960s), and the emergence of the United States as the new major Western power in the Middle East. The Suez experience highlighted a stubborn contest between the defenders of the concept of “sovereign consent” and the advocates of “International intervention”. Both the deployment of the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) and its termination were surrounded by controversy and legal-political wrangling. The role of UNEF and UN peacekeeping operations in general framed the development of a new concept for an emerging international human rights law and crisis management. The UNEF experience, moreover, brought into sharp relief the need for a conflict resolution component for any peace operation. International conflict management, and human rights protection are both subject to an increasing interventionist international legal regime. Consequently, the traditional concept of “sovereignty” is facing increasing challenge. By its very nature, the subject matter of this multi-dimensional research involves historical, political and international legal aspects shaping the research’s content and conclusions. The research utilizes the experience and contributions of several key participants in this pioneering peacekeeping experience. In the last chapter, recommendations are made –based on all the elements covered in the research- to suggest contributions to the evolving UN ground rules for international crisis intervention and management.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Piano dell’opera I. Abstract:

Abstract:
Oil & Gas pipeline industry has experience external corrosion and damage impacting its structural integrity for decades. Over 30 years, composite technology has been implemented to strengthen pipelines back to its design condition. The composite application is very common for pipelines of all sizes having operating temperatures from ambient to 60 deg. C. ONGC – Uran plant is a major facility to process crude oil with associated gas and condensate received from Mumbai High through Subsea pipeline. Regeneration Column was designed for 50 PSI with Design Temperature of 130 Deg. C. and insulated skin. Weather and humidity was accelerating external corrosion around stiffener rings to the point that, it warranted a shutdown to replace either a section or full tower, thereby impacting the production throughput of ONGC-Uran facility. ONGC hired M/s. EIL as a consulting company to map out extent of corrosion and to identify area needed attention to rehabilitate. Consultant recommended to go for weld build up in identified LML areas (Local Metal Loss) through a planned shutdown of the column. We were aware about composite technology and further investigation helped to find the right combination of Carbon and High Temperature Epoxy system meeting our requirement through online repair and rehabilitation avoiding shutdown of Regeneration Column. We selected Carbon with high temperature epoxy based composite system designed for 130 deg. C and installation between 90 to 110 deg. C. Composite application system was designed accordingly and a third party inspection agency was hired to witness prototype tests and composite application techniques. Bonding of Carbon Composite to the Carbon Steel pipe of equivalent grade was successfully tested in the lab. After infield application, the thickness and hardness of composite system were measured throughout the repaired area during and after the process by TPI. Project was completed by T.D. Williamson in end 2012.

Abstract:
Abstract The DDG 51 Class of AEGIS guided missile destroyers is the Navy’s premier surface combatant. Named for famed World War II hero. Admiral Arleigh Burke, these ships represent state-of-the-art technology. This 504 foot, 8,300 ton destroyer has been designed with improved seakeeping and survivability characteristics and carries the sophisticated AEGIS Weapon System. Derived from the Greek word meaning “shield”, AEGIS ships are the “shield of the fleet”. The Navy has commissioned the first two ships of the class. They have performed beyond expectation in rigorous at-sea trials designed to fully test combat capability. The DDG 51 Class ships are replacing retiring fleet assets. In a decreasing Department of Defense (DoD) budget environment, however, acquisition costs must be reduced to continue to build capable warships. The Navy’s Destroyer Program Office is pursuing the implementation of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) technology to reduce costs without reducing ship’s capability. Under Navy direction, the ship construction yards, Bath Iron Works and Ingalls Shipbuilding, are aggressively pursuing the transition to CAD-based design, construction, and life cycle support This effort also involves General Electric, the Combat System Engineering Agent. Building a three dimensional (3D) computer model of the ship prior to construction will facilitate the identification and resolution of interferences and interface problems that would otherwise go undetected until actual ship construction. This 3D database contains geometry and design data to support system design. Accurate construction drawings, fabrication sketches, and Numerical Control (NC) data can be extracted directly from the database to support construction at each shipyard. At completion of construction, a model representing the “as built” configuration will be provided as a lifetime support tool for each ship’s projected 40 year life. The transition to CAD-based design and construction has applied fundamental concepts of the DoD’s Computer Aided Acquisition and Logistic Support (CALS) initiative. In addition to creating a 3D database representing ship design, the shipyards have developed a neutral file translator to exchange this data between Computervision and Calma CAD systems in operation at Bath Iron Works and Ingalls Shipbuilding respectively. This object oriented transfer capability ensures data is shared rather than duplicated. The CALS concepts of concurrent engineering and computer aided engineering analysis are being applied to design an upgrade to the ship that features the addition of a helicopter hanger. The CAD models are used as an electronic baseline from which to assess proposed modifications. Optimizing the design before the first piece of steel is cut will reduce construction costs and improve the quality of the ship.

In ASME 2012 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2012-85689.

Abstract:
AA7075 has many good mechanical properties; however, its bonding strength is poor and is difficult to produce extruded hollow products. Although some researchers proposed different method to study welding strength of Aluminum alloy, related study for high strength Aluminum alloy in hollow extrusion process is not enough. This study use DEFORM 3D finite element analysis software to simulate two different types of hollow extruding die configurations for square tube extrusion process, namely: type I welding position at the corners of the square tube and type II on the side faces. The welding strengths of these two kinds of extruded tube are studied by expanding test and tensile test. The service lives of these two extrusion die components are studied based on the die stress and die wear information. Some information about the study are as follows: ingot material is AA7075, ingot diameter is 127mm, the extruded tube outside dimension is 54mm × 54mm, thickness is 5mm, extrusion temperature is 480°C, and ramp speed is 0.5mm/s, die material is SKD61 with HRC48. Research results show that the maximum extrusion force for type II is greater than type I. The maximum equivalent die stress occurs in upper die rather than in lower die both for type I and II. However, the predicted die life for type II is greater than type I due to extrusion die design. The welding strength for type II square tube is about 300 MPa on each welding seam.

Abstract:
We have tried a kinetical approach to characterize the dynamics of thrombin generation, thrombin action and heparin-enhanced inhibitors in vivo. Integrals (φ) of free thrombin concentration over time were calculated from fibrinogen decrease to characterize tissue thromboplastin-induced DIC in the dog. DIC with φ < 8nMmin was reversible. Dynamic thrombin inhibition (DTI), measured as pseudo-first order rate constant of thrombin inactivation by plasma (baseline DTI = 6.31± 0.79/min, n=30) increased to 68.69±59.98/min (n=7) with heparin (H) and to 22.48±14.91/min (n=5 with pentosan polysulfate (PPS). DTI correlated significantly with heparin doses (p< 0.002), and with the prolongation of APTT (p<0.0 2) and of prothrombin time (p < 0.05). The efficiency β of tissue thromboplastin (Tp) to trigger DIC ( φ per ml TP) was reduced from β =3.81±3.16nMmin/ml to 0.74±0.52nMmin/ml by H (p < 0.01) and to 1.16±1.10nMmin/ml (n.s.) by PPS. As expected from the product DTI.φ = 23.4 ± 13.8nM there was no detectable decrease of prothrombin, of the combined activity of antithrombin III + heparin cofactor II (ATHC) or of heparin cofactor II (HC, specific assay by dermatan sulfate activation) in reversible DIC without glycosaminoglycan protection. However, increasing doses of TP at constant PPS protection induced a statistically significant and persistent decrease of prothrombin by 17.6±9.91 and of HC by 20.4±8.81 indicating HC enhancement by PPS in vivo. The model is suitable for the study of glycosa-minoglycans and thrombin inhibitors.

"Numerical Investigation of Low Solidity Vaned Diffuser Performance in a High-Pressure Centrifugal Compressor: Part II—Influence of Vane Stagger." In ASME Turbo Expo 2008: Power for Land, Sea, and Air. ASMEDC, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2008-50178.

Abstract:
As the second part, following the authors’ previous study, the influence of the LSD (Low Solidity Diffuser) vane stagger on high-pressure ratio centrifugal compressor performance is numerically investigated with all the other design parameters fixed, while vane solidities are in the range from 0.70 to 0.85. Vane stagger is varied for 6 cases from 8.55 deg to 22.37 deg with the NACA65-(4A10)06 airfoil profile, and the Stage interface scheme is applied for an interaction treatment. As the vane stagger increases, changing from 10.55 deg to 19.58 deg, the compressor overall performance is generally improved, but two extreme cases of vane stagger of 8.55 deg and 22.37 deg provide poor performance. Vane stagger of 19.58 deg shows the highest efficiency and pressure rise near design flow, while vane stagger of 13.76 deg has the largest operating range with acceptable performance of efficiency and pressure ratio.

Abstract:
The U.S. Navy and Allison Engine Company successfully completed a second round of testing which integrated a new Woodward Governor Full Authority Digital Control (FADC) system for gas turbine control and a Redundant Independent Mechanical Start System (RIMSS). This integrated system will be installed on Allison Model AG9140 Ship Service Gas Turbine Generators (SSGTGs) on hull numbers DDG-86 and follow of the U.S. Navy’s Arleigh Burke (DDG-51) class destroyers. The Full Authority Digital Control (FADC) Local Operating Panel (LOCOP) will be a direct replacement of the original AG9140 LOCOP and will control both the Allison 501-K34 gas turbine and the RIMSS unit. RIMSS is a gas turbine powered, mechanically coupled start system for the SSGTGs and is designed to replace the high pressure start air system on DDG-51 class ships. This paper describes the FADC and RIMSS systems and details Phase II testing that was conducted on the AG9140 SSGTG located at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division - Ship Systems Engineering Station (NSWCCD-SSES) DDG-51 Land Based Engineering Site (LBES), Figure 1. The test program embodied the second portion of RIMSS testing which included the addition of the final prototype FADC control system. The test agenda included electric plant operations with the FADC and a second 500 start endurance test of RIMSS. The primary objective of Phase II testing was to evaluate the FADC control system and to further validate engine life predictions for the RIMSS engine.

Cyrus, Václav. "Aerodynamic Performance of an Axial Compressor Stage With Variable Rotor Blades and Variable Inlet Guide Vanes." In ASME 1998 International Gas Turbine and Aeroengine Congress and Exhibition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 1998. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/98-gt-151.

Abstract:
Experimental investigations of flow fields and losses in an axial flow compressor stage were carried out. The stage has hub/tip ratio of 0.7. The design values of flow coefficient and pressure coefficient are 0.6 and 0.81, respectively. Aerodynamic performance was investigated for two principal configurations: i) axial flow stage with variable rotor blades, ii) axial flow stage with variable inlet guide and stator vanes. The most efficient volume flow rate regulation of the stage was with the application of variable rotor blades. On the basis of experimental data an analysis of the origin of flow separation on the suction and pressure surfaces of rotor and stator blades was made with the use of simple design criteria. The unsteady flow of rotating stall type in the tested stage appeared after simultaneous occurence of large stall regions in both rotor and stator blade rows. The existence of large stall regions in the IGV did not affect the rotating stall onset. At high values of the IGV stagger angle change (50 deg) pressure pulsations appeared due to the occurence of stall.
